Most of us go through life trying to do our best at whatever we do, whether it’s our job, family, school or anything else. But some time ago, I got to 16 that I wasn’t improving much at those things even though I was spending a lot of time working hard at them. This situation 17 to be pretty common.

So I’d like to share with you some ideas about why that is and what we can all do about it. We can learn from the most successful people and teams. They go through life purposely alternating(交替) 18 two zones: the learning zone and the performance zone.

The learning zone is when our goal is to improve. Then we do activities designed for 19 , concentrating (专心) on what we haven’t learned well yet, which means we have to expect to make mistakes, knowing that we will learn from 20 . That is very different from what we do 21 we’re in our performance zone, which is when our goal is to do something as well as we can to carry it out. Then we concentrate on what we have already learnt well and we try to make 22 mistakes.

Both of these zones should be part of our lives, but being 23 about when we want to be in each of them, with what goal, focus and expectations, helps us better perform and better improve. The performance zone pushes for our immediate performance, while the learning zone

.

prepares for our growth and our future performance. The reason 24 many of us don’t improve much though we have worked hard is that we spend almost all of our time in the performance zone. This 25 our growth and also our performance over the long term. So we should have a clear idea about when to learn and when to perform in our life.

How to be a safe and smart searcher

.

Use more than one keyword when you are doing a search. If you want

to find out about seagulls, for example, search for “bird seagull” and

not just “seagull” -- because seagull might also be the name of just

about anything else, from a hotel to a documentary film.

Exact reference can help you find what you’re looking for.

If you are looking for an exact phrase or sentence, e.g. “seagulls are very clever”, type it between inverted commas (“”) and only exact matches will be shown. This is useful when you want to find something you’ve already seen but lost.

Avoid common words like “a” or “the” in a search. These aren’t always helpful and are usually unnecessary.

Remove unwanted results by adding a minus symbol (-). For example, “Seagull-hotel-film” would leave out all references to hotels and films.

Check your spelling.

Make sure that you spell every word in the search box correctly. The smallest typing mistakes can bring unwanted results -- especially when the mistyped word exists.

Have a filter.

It’s a good idea to filter(过滤) your online searchers, especially when you are searching for pictures. Ask an adult to help you add a filtering system. There are lots of filtering software options available.

Experiment with different search engines until you find the one that’s best for you. Some search engines personalize the results, so check out the option of using a search engine that doesn’t do this and you will get different results.

Reliability is very important when you search on the Internet.

Always ask yourself, “Is this reliable?” Don’t make the mistake of believing everything you see. Some websites are unreliable and some information is false. Check your information on other

websites before accepting it.

.

29. Which of the following things should you do as a smart searcher?

https://www.wendangku.net/doc/d919042066.html,e only one keyword in a single search.

b.Avoid terms like “a” or “the” in a search.

c.Choose your search engine carefully.

d.Pay no attention to small spelling mistakes.

https://www.wendangku.net/doc/d919042066.html,pare information from different sites.

A.abc

B. ace

C. bcd

D. bce

30. According to the passage, the minus symbol ___________.

A.can make search results more exactly

B.is equal to inverted commas in a search

C.is likely to give you a long list of results

D.is usually considered unnecessary in a search

31. From the passage, we know that a filtering system ____________.

A.is used to tick out false information on a website

B.is especially important while searching for pictures

C.personalizes your results when you are doing a search

D.is useful to find something you’ve already seen but lost

On

the last evening of my mom’s most recent trip to visit me in

London, she sat across the table peeling pomegranate(石榴) seeds into a

big bowl.

“Eat this tomorrow after I’m gone, you lazy bee,” she teased, dismissing the piles of books, clothes and electronics across the table waiting to be packed into her luggage.

Mom knows me too well: pomegranate seeds are my favorite. They never appear on my food schedule though, as I lack the patience to peel them properly. Mom doesn’t have the patience either, except when it comes to feeding me.

.

. Her hands moved gently and swiftly, while her eyes looked carefully at the small watery little

seeds, attentively trying not to crush(压碎) them.

When I woke up the next day and opened the fridge. Sure enough, waiting for me was a clear jar of perfect smooth and shiny pomegranate seeds.

Ever since I left home to study in London ten years ago, food

has been a big part of mom’s London visits. With each trip, she

would be sure to fill the entire fridge with hand-made dumplings, rice cakes, rice puddings, sesame filled sweet dumplings and many other sweets I struggle to find English translations for.

I love watching her turn the loose white flour into moon-shaped dumplings magically, and place them neatly into a tray.

Whenever it’s time to say goodbye, mom would never say that she misses me, or that she loves me. Instead, she’ll just say: “don’t starve yourself while I’m not with you”. That’s because she belongs to a generation where food is an expression of love. At that time, her favorite after-school activity was visiting an old granny, who would feed her rice mixed with sesame oil. “Mmm… that’s the best food we could hope for back then,” she would say.

In her generation, people would greet each other saying “Have you eaten?” We don’t do that in China anymore, but I still look forward to the tradition of my whole family gathering together to prepare food across a big kitchen table at special occasions, such as the Chinese New Year. Such sweet childhood memories have stayed with me.

It’s funny that living in the super health -conscious city of London has taught me to think about food in terms of calories and carb content. Well, mom’s home -made dumplings don’t have any food labels. No calorie calculation, no fat percentages, nothing on the package telling me to eat my “five a day”. Instead, every bite of mom’s food tastes of love, and of the feeling of home.

A. saying “Have you eaten?”

B. making home-made dumplings

C. visiting an old granny with food

D. sharing food like cakes and puddings

35. Which of the following is most likely to be the title?

A. A Chinese mom’s favourite food

B. Food that a Chinese mom can make

C. The healthiest food in the world

D. Food -- a cheerful way to show love

Have you ever thought about how much water you use in a day?

Starting February 1st, each person in Cape Town, South Africa received a daily supply of 13.2 gallons of water which is only enough for a 10-minute shower!

This restriction(限制) was introduced in preparation for April 22nd, also known as Day Zero, on which the city will turn off all municipal(市政) water taps because of the overuse of fresh water these years.

Over the past three years, Cape Town has suffered from a dangerous drought(干旱). That, along with a growing population of four million people, has caused water-supply drop strongly. As of November 2017, the water level in their largest water reservoir(水库) had dropped to 28% from 102.9% in 2014. That amount is expected to come down to 13.5% by April 22, 2018. What’s worse, the last 10% of the reservoir’s levels are not potable (safe to dr ink) because of the dirt at the bottom.

Firstly, researchers thought the cause of the drought was El Ni?o. Cape Town could become the first ever major city to run out of water. The government has called on people to conserve the little water they have left by way of prevention, including stopping car washing and filling up swimming pools. They are asking the public to cut showers to two minutes and reuse bathing water to flush the toilet.

.

When Cape Town reaches Day Zero, there will be 200 water stations scattered across the town for people to receive their daily supply of 6.6 gallons. Armed guards will stand by to make sure there is no violence or theft.

The water shortage has already influenced all parts of Cape Town. People’s lives are being affected, with those in the tourism industry and businesses like car washing, seeing no chance to make a living. The relationship between people also becomes worse as neighbors are encouraged to report each other for water waste and the government plans to collect a drought tax as they are losing tax money because of the low water use.

36. On April 22nd, people in Cape Town could have only ______ gallons of water for a whole

day.

C. 10

D. 6.6

D. ①②④

38. What does the word conserve in Paragraph 4 mean?

A. produce

D. prepare

39. What unusual thing is done on Day Zero?

A. Receiving enough daily supply.

B. Planning to collect a drought tax.

C. Turning off all municipal water taps.

D. Reusing bathing water to flush the toilet.

40. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The water in the largest water reservoir has already dropped to 10%.

B. Neighbours will learn to help each other when facing the serious problem.

How similar are language and music?

Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. Similarly, music is a part of many people’s lives, whether it is played on the radio on your drive to work or played in a concert. Both language and music play an important role in our culture and here are some of their similarities.

Both language and music have a writing system.

In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes to keep a record of music. Just as you are reading this collection of letters on the screen and find meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear. So just as you read English, you can read music. By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. I can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago, which is really quite exciting.

Both vary with culture.

You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use.

.

In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and offering us music for every situation. This also means that there is something for everyone! Even if you don’t like Britpop melodies, you may love the energy of Latin American salsa music.

Both share emotion.

How do you know that I am angry? Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. In contrast, you have probably also listened to sad music when you were feeling down. I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics.

Title: Similarities 56 language and music

Having a writing system ※Be 57 with the alphabet—a collection of letters expressing plenty of meaning and ideas.

※Use notes for 58 a record.

Have you heard about the periodic table (元素周期表) lately? Well, there’s some big news about this special table, but first, remember that the periodic table is used to organize all the elements, or things that make u 66 our world.

Elements are all around us. Iron is one of the commonest elements found within the Earth. You probably know the element oxygen. It is the element that we b 67 in all the time. And elements can combine (结合) to make new things l 68 H2O. This is hydrogen and oxygen put together, also known as w 69 ! Learning about these things helps us better understand the world we live in.

But have you ever noticed something missing in the periodic table? There were already 114 elements. But the seventh row of the table was not f 70 , until now! In December, scientists from IUPAC(国际理论与应用化学联合会) found the f 71 elements that were missing. They are elements 113, 115, 117 and 118.

“To scientists, this is of greater v 72 than an Olympic gold medal,”Ryoji Noyori, a Nobel honored chemist, told the Guardian.

The new elements are heavy metals and were made in l 73 . These kinds of elements can’t be found in nature. Scientists are still looking for ways to use these elements, and other elements in the eighth row, in our daily lives.

Scientists have been working on this for 10 years, but the work is not done. Now they will p 74 to look for “element 119 and beyond”. But for now, be careful when you read your

C 75 books because the periodic table might be outdated.
