Task one

―Most episodes of absent-mindedness----forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room----are caused by a simple lack of attention, says Schacter. You’re supposed to remember something, but you haven’t encoded it deeply.‖

Encoding, Schacter explains, is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impact on recalling it later. Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don’t pay attention to what you did because you’re involved in a conversation, you’ll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe. ―Your memory itself isn’t failing you,‖ says Schacter, ― rather, you didn’t give your

memory system the information it needed.‖ Lack of interest can also lea d to absent –mindedness. ―A man who can recite sports statistics from 30 years ago.‖ says Zelinski, ―may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox.‖ Women have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they pay more attention to their environment, and memory relies on just that.

Visual cues can help prevent absent-mindedness, says Schacter, ―But be sure the cue is clear and ava ilable.‖ he cautions. If you want to remember to take a medication with lunch, put the pill bottle on the kitchen table---don’t leave it in the medicine chest and write ourselves a note that you keep in a pocket.

Another common episode of absent-mindedness: walking into a room and wondering why you’re there. Most likely, you were thinking about something else. ―Everyone does this from time to time,‖ says Zelinski. The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room, and you’ll likely remember.

1. Why does the author think that encoding properly is very important?

A) It helps us understand our memory system better.

B) It enables us to recall something from our memory.

C) It expands our memory capacity considerably.

D) It slows down the process of losing our memory.

2. One possible reason why women have better memories than men is that_____.

A) they have a wider range of interests

B) they are more reliant on the environment

C) they have an unusual power of focusing their attention

D) they are more interested in what’s happening around them

3. A note in the pocket can hardly serve as a reminder because_____.

A) it will easily get lost

B) it’s not clear enough for you to read

C) it’s out of your sight

D) it might get mixed up with other things

4. What do we learn from the last paragraph?

A) If we focus our attention on one thing, we might forget another.

B) Memory depends to a certain extent on the environment.

C) Repetition helps improve our memory.

D) If we keep forgetting things, we’d better return to wh ere we were.

5. What is the passage mainly about?

A) The process of gradual memory loss.

B) The causes of absent-mindedness.

C) The impact of the environment on memory.

D) A way of encoding and recalling.

Task 2

Many American students pursue higher education to prepare for professional employment. In your academic training you will need to begin planning for the transition from college to career. A career is really a process—it is how you progress through a series of jobs and occupations during your working years. A college education can help you get started on your career journey.

In American society, the type of occupational fields you choose and jobs you hold influence your entire lifestyle: your self—concept, income, prestige, choice of friends, and where you will live. This freedom to choose from thousands of employment choices can be enjoyable, or troubling—if you don’t know where and how to begin. The best way to begin is with a well-thought-out career plan.

Career planning is a comprehensive process that takes much time and effort. Career planning can greatly increase your prospects of obtaining employment in the occupation your choose. However, career planning includes much more than a job search. It begins with carefully considering what you want and need in life.

Career planning can be divided into four consecutive steps that include self-assessment, occupational exploration and selection, career preparation, and job seeking. Although each student’s goals will be different, one suggested timetable to help you keep on course is to complete one step in each university year. Your schedule may be longer or shorter depending on your career goal.

Task 3

Aspirin is one of the safest and most effective drugs invented by man, and the most popular medicine in the world today. It is an effective pain reliever. Its bad effects are relatively mild, and it is cheap.

Aspirin is truly the 20th–century wonder drug. It is also the second largest suicide drug and is the leading cause of poisoning among children. It has side effects that, although relatively mild, are largely unrecognized among users.

Although aspirin was first sold by a German company in 1899, it has been around much longer than that. During the 19th–century, there was a great deal of experimentation in Europe with this chemical, and it led to the introduction of aspirin. By 1915, aspirin tables were available in the United States.

A small quantity of aspirin relieves pain. It also reduces fever by interfering with some of the body’s reactions. Specifically, aspirin seems to slow down the formation of the acids inv olved in pain and the complex chemical reactions that cause fever.

Aspirin is very irritating to the stomach. There is a right way and a wrong way to take aspirin. The best way is to chew the tables before swallowing them with water, but few people can stand the bitter tastes. Some people suggest crushing the tables in milk or orange juice and drinking that.

11. What does this passage discuss?

A. The good things about aspirin.

B. Both the good and bad things about aspirin.

C. The history and uses of aspirin.

D. Both B and C.

12. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. The first paragraph describes the good things about aspirin.

B. Aspirin can be dangerous.

13. The author of this article seems_____.

A. in favour of aspirin

B. against the use of aspirin

C. interested in aspirin

D. not interested in aspirin

14. ―Aspirin seems to slow down the formation of acids‖ means______.

D. the acids develop quickly at first then stop developing

For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. In 1985 when a Japan Air Lines (JAL) jet crashed, its president, Yasumoto Takagi, called each victim’s family to apologize, and then promptly resigned. And in 1987, when a subsidiary of Toshiba sole sensitive military technology to the former Soviet Union, the chairman of Toshiba gave up his post. These executive actions, which Toshiba calls “the highest form of apology,”may seem bizarre to US managers. No one at Boeing resigned after the JAL crash, which may have been caused by a faulty Boeing repair. The difference between the two business cultures centers around different definitions of delegation. While US executives give both responsibility and authority to their employees, Japanese executives delegate only authority—the responsibility is still theirs. Although the subsidiary that sold the sensitive technology to the Soviets had its own management, the Toshiba top executives said they “must take personal responsibility for not creating an atmosphere throughout the Toshiba group that would make such activity unthinkable, even in an independently run subsidiary.” Such acceptance of community responsibility is not unique to businesses in Japan. School principals in Japan have resigned when their students committed major crimes after school hours. Even if they do not quit, Japanese executives will often accept primary responsibility in other ways, such as taking the first pay cut when a company gets into financial trouble. Such personal sacrifices, even if they are largely symbolic, help to create the sense of community and employee loyalty that is crucial to the Japanese way of doing business. Harvard Business School professor George Lodge calls the ritual acceptance of blame “almost a feudal (封建的) way of purging (清除) the community of dishonor,”and to some in the United States, such resignations look cowardly. However, in an era in which both business and governmental leaders seem particularly good at evading responsibility, many US managers would probably welcome an infusion (灌输) of the Japanese sense of responsibility, If, for instance,

大学英语B阅读理解练习题及答案

Passage 1 Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the countr y. If one likes garden, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night. 1. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city. B. All the people who work in London prefer to live in the country. C. Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London. D. Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside. 2. With the same money needed for ________, one can buy a little house with a garden in the country. A. getting a small flat with a garden B. having a small flat with a garden C. renting a small flat without a garden D. buying a small flat without a garden 3. When the garden is in blossom, the one ________ has been rewarded. A. living in the country B. having spent time working in the garden. C. having a garden of his own. D. having been digging, planting and watering 4. People who think happiness lies in the city life would feel that ________ if they had to live outside London. A. their life was meaningless B. their life was invaluable C. they didn’t deserve a happy life D. they were not worthy of their happy life 5. The underlined phrase “get away from” in the 3rd paragraph refers to ________. A. deal with B. do away with C. escape from D. prevent from 很多在伦敦工作的人喜欢住在伦敦郊外,然后每天乘火车、汽车和公交车去上班或上学。这也就意味着他们不得不早出晚归。
