Part Ⅲ. Reading Comprehension (2×20 points)

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or incomplete statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A,B,C and D. You should decide on the best choice, and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

Passage 1

By far the most common snake in Britain is the adder. In Scotland, in fact, there are no other snakes at all. The adder is also the only British snake with a poisonous bite. It can be found almost anywhere, but prefers sunny hillsides and rough open country, including high ground. In Ireland there are no snakes at all.

Most people regard snake bites as a fatal misfortune, but not all bites are serious and very few are fatal. Sometimes attempts at emergency treatment turn out to be more dangerous than the bite itself, with amateurs heroically, but mistakenly, trying do- it-yourself surgery and other unnecessary measures.

All snakes have small teeth, so it follows that all snakes can bite, but only the bite of the adder presents any danger. British snakes are shy animals and are far more frightened of you than you could possibly be of them. The adder will attack only if it feels threatened, as can happen if you take it by surprise and step on it accidentally or if you try to catch it or pick it up, which it dislikes intensely. If it hears you coming, it will normally get out of the way as quickly as it can, but adders cannot move very rapidly and may attack before moving if you are very close.

The effect of a bite varies considerably. It depends upon several things, one of which is the body-weight of the person is bitten. The bigger the person is, the less harmful the bite is likely to be, which is why children suffer far more seriously from snake bites than adults. A healthy person will also have better resistance

against the poison.

Very few people actually die from snake bites in Britain, and though these bites can make some people very ill, there are probably just as many cases of bites having little or no effect, as there are of serious illness.

61. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. The adder is the only poisonous snake in Britain.

B. In Scotland there are no other snakes except the adder.

C. Snake bites seem more dangerous than they actually are.

D. People’s attempts at emergency treatment are utterly unnecessary.

A. in wilder parts of Britain and Ireland

B. in Scotland and nowhere else

C. on uncultivated land throughout Britain

D. in shady fields in England

63. We are told that British snakes are ______.

A. afraid of human beings

B. poisonous including the adder

C. dangerous except the adder

D. friendly towards human beings

64. If an adder senses your approaching, it will probably ______.

A. attack you immediately

B. disappear very quickly

C. wait to frighten you

D. move out of the way

65. According to the passage, a snake bite is ______.

A. more harmful to a healthy man than to a sick man

B. less harmful to an adult than to a child

C. more dangerous than any serious illness

D. always fatal in Britain

Passage 2

Charlotte Hollins knows she faces a battle. The 23-year-old British farmer and her 21-year-old brother Ben are fighting to save the farm from the city developers that their father worked on since he was 14. While she is confident they will succeed, she lists farming’s many challenges:“You don’t often get a day off. Supermarkets put a lot of pressure on farmers to keep prices down. With fewer people working on farms it can be isolating,” she said. “There is a high rate of suicide and farming will never make you rich!”

Oliver Robinson, 25, grew up on a farm in Yorkshire. But he never considered staying on his father and grandfather’s land. “I’m sure Dad hoped I’d stay,”he said. “I guess it’s a nice, straightforward life, but it doesn’t appeal. For young ambitious people, farm life would be a hard world.” For Robinson, farming doesn’t offer much in terms of money or lifestyle. Hollins agrees that economics stops people from pursuing farming rewards: “providing for a vital human need, while working outdoors with nature.”

Farming is a big political issue in the UK. “Buy British” campaigns encourage consumers not to buy cheaper imported foods. The 2001 “food and mouth crisis” closed

thousands of farms, stopped meat exports, and raised public consciousness of troubles in British farming. Jamie Oliver’s 2005 campaign to get children to eat healthily also highlighted the issue. This national concern brings hope for farmers competing with powerful supermarkets. While most people buy food from the big supermarkets, hundreds of independent Farmers’ Markets are becoming popular.

A. the poor and the rich

B. farmers and city developers

C. small markets and supermarkets

D. young people and their parents

67. In the eyes of Charlotte Hollins, ______ makes fewer people work on farms.

A. a low rate of suicide

B. rich life of farmers

C. hard life on the farms

D. high prices of farm products

68. According to the passage, more and more young people leave their fathers’land because farming cannot offer ______.

A. a hard world

B. a vital human need

C. a nice and straightforward life

D. enough money and honourable life

69. “Buy British” campaigns ______.

A. bring benefit to farmers

B. closed thousands of farms

C. stopped meat export

D. ask children to eat British foods

70. According to the passage, Farmers’ Markets are becoming popular because ______.

A. thousands of farms are closed

B. farmers are the owners of the markets

C. more people are concerned about healthy food

D. Jamie Oliver’s 2005 campaigns urge people to “Buy British”

Passage 3

Television has now come to nearly every family. It has played a very important part in people’s life. School children in the US watch TV about 25 hours a week.

Some people feel that televisions is good for children because it helps them learn about their country and the world. With the help of programs of education, children do better in school. Other people feel that there are too many programs about love and crime on TV, and that even programs of education don’t help children a lot. Children simply watch too much television, so they don’t do a lot of other important things for their education. Children of three to six learn to speak their language and talk with people. When they are watching TV, they are only listening to the language, and they aren’t talking with anyone. When school children watch TV, they read less. Because of this, they don’t learn to read or write quickly at school.

All children learn by doing, and they need time to play in order to learn about the world. When they watch TV, they play less. They also have less time to communicate with their parents and friends, and they have less time for sports.

Recently, fifteen families in Denver decided to stop watching TV for a month or more. At first it was difficult, but there were soon a lot of good changes. Passage 4

Auctions(拍卖)are public sales of goods, conducted by an officially approved auctioneer(拍卖人). He asked the crowd to gather in the auction room to bid(出价)for various items on sale. He encourages buyers to bid higher figures, and finally names the highest bidder as the buyer of the goods. This is called“knocking down” the goods, for the bidding ends when the auctioneer bangs a small hammer on a raised platform.

The ancient Romans probably invented sales by auction, and the English word comes from the Latin“anctic”meaning“increase”. The Romans usually sold in this way the spoils taken in war, these sales were called“sub hasta”, meaning“under the spear”, a spear being stuck in the ground as a signal for a crowd to gather.

In England in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries goods were often sold “by the candle”;a short candle was lit by the auctioneer, and bids could be made while it was burning.

Practically all goods can be sold by auction.Among these are coffee, skins, wool, tea, cocoa, furs, fruit, vegetables and wines. Action sales are also usual for land and property, antique furniture, pictures, rare books, old china, and works of art.

An auction is usually advertised before hand with full particulars of the articles to be sold and where and when they can be viewed by the buyers. If the advertisement cannot give full details, catalogues are printed, and each group of

goods to be sold together, called a“lot”(件, 组), is usually given a number. The auctioneer need not begin with Lot One and continue the numerical order; he may wait until he notices the fact that certain buyers are in the room and then produce the lots they are likely to be interested in.

76. Auctioned goods are sold ______.

A. for the highest price offered

Part Ⅵ. Writing

Improve the Service Quality of Travel Agencies In recent years, complains about poor service quality of travel agencies are rising. The complains mainly center on issues like asking for extra fee without informing the travelers in advance, lowering the standard of board and lodging, forcing travelers to go shopping and so on.

There are some reasons for this phenomenon. First of all, the quantity of travel agencies exceeds the actual need. Thus, some travel agencies have to lower their cost through some mean methods like charging extra fee and arranging travelers to stay in remote and shabby hotels. Another reason is the travelers’unawareness of safeguarding their own rights. Travel agencies are keen to take advantages of this point and to escape the compensation.

There are some solutions I can offer. Firstly, travel agencies should advertise their services honestly and make their charge reasonable. Secondly, the government ought to supervise the operation of travel agencies closer. Last but not the least, establishing a complete complaining channel is essential. Only through these methods can we lower the complain rate and bring travelers pleasant journeys.
