Christopher Walsh: A 12-Year-old Hero

As life-saver Christopher Walsh rescued his brother and then his sister from the water of a canal, his mother shouted to him:” I?m proud of you.”

His mother Bery1 sat proudly and watched last night as Christopher was g iven the …Child of Courage? award by his favourite TV star.

Christopher was in the car with his mother, father, sister Rosie, 10, and brother Mac, 7, when his father drove into a metal barrier.

The family? car fell down a hill into the canal, and landed wi th its wheels up.

Christopher, then 12, swam through a broken window and got out into the fresh air. Then he saw the rest of his family were still in the car---in the water.

He took a big breath and swam back to save first Mac, and then Rosie. Christopher, from England, said:“I didn?t think about it and only knew I had to get them out. I was frightened, but it was all happening so fast, and I didn?t really think about the danger.”

Christopher freed Mac and then swam back to get non-swimmer Rosie, who was under the cold, cloudy water, in the car.

Christopher had to feel for her seatbelt because he could not see anything. He took the seatbelt off her, then went up for air. Finally he went back to pull her out of the car.

Bery1 I said:“When I got to the side and looked back, I thought Christopher and Rosie had gone.

I thought they were dead. Then I saw him come up out of the water like a dolphin, and I could see he had Rosie. I shouted across the canal, “I?m so proud of you.?”

Jay ne?s Heroine

Jayne, what is your definition of a hero? Those people who help others who are less fortunate than they are. I especially admire those people who are willing to help others even when they are having difficulties in their own lives.

So who woul d you say is your hero, Jayne? Well it?s my heroine actually, because she?s a woman. She?s an amazing woman called Jane Tomlinson from Leeds in the North of England.

Why is she your heroine? When she was just 26 years old, she became ill with breast cancer and she knew she might not live very long. But she decided not give up hope and she started running. Where has she run and how far? She has done the London Marathon, the New York Marathon(26 miles) and the Great North Run in England(13 miles). But it?s not just running that she?s done. When she was very, very ill she cycled from Rome in Italy to her home in Leeds, which is a very, very long way. She?s just finished cycling from the West Coast of the USA to the East Coast.

What is it that makes her running and cycling so extr aordinary? Because every time she?s done a run or a cycle ride she?s made huge amounts of money for cancer charities. She? only 43 and she has a husband and two children. It?s amazing that she can do all this as well as looking after her family. Sometimes when I go to the gym and I don?t feel like working hard, I think of her and I think …If she can do it, I can too!?

Is there anything else about her that you admire? Yes, many of the charities that she gives money to are children?s cancer hospitals. She likes to hand over the donations herself and always spends time talking to the children. She is really interested in what they have to say and she gives them hope, because she has recovered from the disease.

What, would you say, you have learned from her? I have learned that, if we are faced with a difficulty, we must never give up hope, but rather get busy doing something good for other people.

1. Choose the correct words or phrases to put into the sentences below and change the form where necessary.

willing amazing give up difficulty

1)I am _________ to help you.

2)He?s a(n) ________ football player to watch.

3)You should ________ smoking because it is bad for your health.

4)If you have any __________, you can turn to me for help.

Lesson One A Mystery Postcard I was coming downstairs to get breakfast when the post came. I was waiting for a letter from my friend Sam, so I picked the letters up and looked through them. I wasn’t surprised to see that there were some bills. There was an invitation to a party. There wasn’t a letter from Sam. There was a postcard, showing some cliffs and the sea. What a nice view! I turned the postcard over. It wasn’t easy to read. Rain had made the writing unclear, including the name of the person who had sent the postcard. Who was it from? I tried to read any of the words. I could read “Dear Tom, I’m having a lovely time in …” Then the writing became unclear. I couldn’t read anything else. Who had gone to the seaside? I couldn’t think of anyone. It was a mystery. There was another my mystery too. Where was Sam’s letter? Just then the phone rang. It was Sam! “I’m calling to see if you got my postcard,” he said. “We changed our minds. Mum and Dad are resting after our walk. So I’m ringing you. I’m sorry I didn’t write a letter. We’ve been so busy.” Both mysteries were solved!
