Test 1

Although weddings vary greatly from country to country, they are happy events in every culture. In most American weddings, the bride wears a traditional style of dress. There is also an old saying that tells women what they should wear or carry when they marry:

"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue."

This "good luck" saying dates back to Victorian times in the 1800s, and many American brides take it very seriously, following the tradition of the wedding dress.

"Something old" symbolizes the connection with the bride's family and the past. Many brides wear a piece of family jewelry or their mother' or grandmother's wedding dress.

"Something new" symbolizes good luck and success in the bride's new life. The wedding dress is often the new item. However, the bride may wear new jewelry or new shoes.

"Something borrowed" reminds the bride that friends and family will help her when she needs them. The borrowed object might be something such as a beautiful handkerchief, or a best friend's wedding veil.

"Something blue" is the symbol of faithfulness and loyalty. Often the blue item is the garter worn on the bride's leg. It might also be a ribbon or a piece of jewelry.

The bride carries flowers as a symbol of happiness. In the past, both the bride and groom wore flowers. At the end of the wedding reception, the bride throws her flowers to all the single women who attend the party. The single woman who catches the flowers is believed to be the next to marry.

Throwing the garter began in France because pieces of the bride's clothing were considered lucky. The bride would throw the garter to the guests at the wedding and whoever caught it could expect good luck. In the United States, the groom traditionally removes the garter from the bride and throws it to the unmarried men. The man who catches it is thought to be the next to marry. At some weddings, the man who catches the garter will place it on the leg of the woman who caught the flowers, or they may start the next dance. It is also common for those who have received the flowers and the garter to have their photo taken with the bride and groom.

Whatever the bride wears, it is also traditional that she be the best-dressed and most important woman at the wedding party. Therefore, it is considered very rude for other women at the wedding to dress more beautifully than the bride.

In pictures from college I was thin. I worked full time, went to school full time, smoked, and lived off fast food and soft drinks. Friends say that I don't look like myself in those pictures. I looked ill, sad, and unhealthy.

Now, at a weight considered to be dangerously high by medical charts, I live better than ever. I have given up smoking, and I eat a lot of vegetables; I enjoy walking, swimming and dancing classes. I exercise and eat well because I love living, not because I want to lose weight. My doctor tells me I am healthy, and this is much more important than being thin. Studies show that overweight people who exercise have a lower death rate than "normal" weight people who do not.

Negative attitudes toward fat people begin in childhood. One study showed that, as early as nursery school, children liked pictures of disabled children of similar ages better than those of fat children. Similarly, a study of college students said they would rather marry a drug user, a thief, or a blind person than someone who was fat. These attitudes create discrimination that affects fat people in every aspect of their lives, including money matters. In fact, overweight, white women usually earn less than thin, white women—24 percent less, according to one study.

People often justify their judgments about fat people by saying that people choose to be fat. Choose? Who would choose life as a fat person in this weight-obsessed culture? There are many false ideas about fat people in society: that all fat people have eating disorders or emotional or mental issues; that if they really wanted to lose weight they could.

In reality, however, some people are naturally fat. How a person is born is simply science, not a comment on someone's character. The Center for Disease Control reports that 78 percent of American women are trying hard to lose weight, and at an amazing failure rate—95 percent get back what they've lost within two to five years.

The often-heard comment of "you have such a pretty face" does not please me because of all that's not said: "If you'd just lose the weight you'd be beautiful."Beauty is a taught concept and the cultural standards for beauty change constantly.

Later in life, I was happy to learn that some cultures have very different standards of beauty. While I was visiting the British Virgin Islands, a local man invited me to be in a picture

with him on the beach. I asked, "Why me? There are women who look like models here."

"Bones are for dogs," he said with a smile. "Meat is for men."

I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday. The announcement in the paper said that you could buy tickets at the theatre box office in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 and 4:00. Since I work from 9 o’clock to 5:30, the only time I could go to the theater was during my 45-minute lunch break, Unfortunately, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes. Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for fifteen minutes waiting for a bus. By the time I saw one come around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip—so I gave up and went back to the office. The same thing

happened on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday. On Thursday, my luck changed, I got on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly twenty minutes. When I got there, however, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour. Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and headed back across the town. By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi. It was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to hear the concert. The trip by taxi only took 10 minutes, but it felt like an hour to me. When I got to the theatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.

Thirty years ago, when t hey were both very young, Romina’s sister Delise contracted a rare form of cancer. Doctors were unable to save Delise and she died at the tender age of five. Years later Romina named her own daughter Delise in memory of her late sister. But neither Grandmother, Maria, nor Romina realized then that Delise, would develop the same rare cancer as her aunt when she was ten years old.

Test 2

In some ways the employment interview is like a persuasive speech because the applicant (interviewee) seeks to persuade the employer (interviewer) to employ him or her. Several suggestions might prove helpful to the applicant when he or she is preparing for the actual interview.

A job applicant should gather certain types of information before the interview. First, the applicant should know what kind of job he wants and how that job relates to his career objective. It is important that the applicant be able to state why he wishes to work for a particular company. Second, the applicant should seek as much information as possible concerning the company, such as the location, the financial situation of the company, plans for expansion, and company philosophy. Information about most big corporations is available in reference books and periodicals.

After gathering information concerning the company, the applicant is ready for the interview. The interviewer’s first impression comes from the interviewee’s appearance. For most interviews, the appropriate dress for a man is a conservative(保守的) dark colored suit with a long sleeve white or light blue shirt and conservative tie.

Although hairstyle and dress are matters of personal taste, many personnel directors get first impressions from these characteristics. For example, one recent college graduate, who felt himself qualified, interviewed for a public relations job. However, the personnel manager considered this young man’s long hair, sloppy dress, and overly casual manner unsuited for this particular position.

C. reference books and periodicals

D. business and philosophy

4. What the applicant wears, as the author suggests, can make him become _____.

A. expressive C. informative

B. impressive D. conservative

5. What does the passage tell us through the example in the last paragraph?

A. The importance of personal taste.

B. The importance of public relations.

C. The importance of self-confidence.

D. The importance of a first impression.

Strange things can happen when body language is used across cultures!

Do people use gestures in your country? Are they being polite or impolite, friendly or unfriendly when they use them? Have you ever been offended by a foreigner using a wrong gesture in your country? Have you ever upset a foreigner by using a nonverbal sign that is considered to be polite or friendly in your own culture? Before you answer these questions, look at the following funny, and sometimes dangerous, situations where the same gestures mean very different things across cultures.

Story 1

A Japanese man asks an American passenger whether the airport has a luggage-trolley service. The American wants to say that there is not only a trolley service, but that it is FREE! So he replies with the famous "A-OK" ring gesture. To the Japanese, however, this means "money" and the Japanese man concludes that there is a significant charge for the service. Meanwhile, a Tunisian observer thinks the American is telling the Japanese man that he is a worthless thief and that he is going to kill him. What confusion!

Story 2

A Sardinian woman asks a man if it is easy to find a taxi at Heathrow Airport. The answer she gets is a cheerful British thumbs-up. Immediately, she hits the poor man with her handbag for making such a rude suggestion. This is an example of why, incidentally, it's not a very good idea to go hitchhiking in Sardinia.

Story 3

Glancing around a restaurant in the airport, a Frenchman remarks wonderingly to his wife, "Do you know how much this airport cost the British taxpayers? Nothing!" He then makes a finger and thumb ring, meaning "zero".

Unfortunately, at the same time, the Frenchman is glancing at a Colombian who is enjoying a fine wine with his dinner. The Colombian is made very angry by the mean gesture because he believes it is directed at him. So he swallows his wine the wrong way and holds his nose between his finger and thumb.

Yet this gesture horrifies a Syrian sitting opposite the Colombian because he thinks he is being told to "go to hell". Thanks to a Greek friend, the Syrian is held back, with great difficulty, from getting up and hitting the Colombian on the nose.

Meanwhile, the restaurant owner hurries over and attempts to calm the men, holding out both of his hands. This, of course, is taken by the Greek to be a double "moutza" and, in his anger, he instantly tries to kill the unfortunate man with his fish knife!

So you see, the lesson from all these stories is that one should be careful with one's own body language, especially when one communicates with a foreigner!

6. On what occasion can strange things happen when we use body language?

A. When it is used among people of the same culture.

B. When it is used among people with different cultures.

C. When it is used among people with the same social background.

D. When it is used among native language speakers.

7. What does an "A-OK" gesture mean in Japan?

A. It means "zero".

B. It means "good".

C. It means "money".

D. It means "toilet".

8. Why does the Sardinian woman hit the British man with her handbag?

A. Because the man asks her a rude question.

B. Because the man doesn't tell her how to find a taxi.

C. Because the man offers to take her to Heathrow Airport.

D. Because the man makes a thumbs-up gesture to her, which she thinks is a rude one.

9. Why was the Colombian made angry by the Frenchman?

A. Because the Frenchman drank his wine.

B. Because the Colombian swallowed the wine the wrong way.

C. Because the Colombian thought the Frenchman made a mean gesture to him.

D. Because the Frenchman made a gesture to horrify the Colombian.

10. What gesture almost makes the Syrian get up to hit another person?

A. Holding one's nose between one's finger and thumb.

B. Holding out both hands.

C. The thumbs-up gesture.

D. The finger and thumb ring gesture.

With more than 20 million records sold, and several Grammy awards to show for it, Natalie Cole, the daughter of famous singer Nat King Cole, has made a name for herself in music.

Along with her great success, however, Natalie Cole has lived in a world of drugs, crime, and failed marriages.

"I have been to hell and back," she says.

In the book Angel on My Shoulder, Cole gives us an honest look at the difficult path she has taken, sharing, as well, her successful recovery.

"Where I'm at now helps me to look back on my life and realize that I've really had quite a colorful and rich life," she says. "I really could have turned out to be a different person."

As the second daughter of Maria and Nat King Cole, Natalie had as normal a childhood as was possible for a little girl whose father spent much of his time away from home. With hopes of one day becoming a doctor, she left her family in Los Angeles to attend a boarding school on the east coast. But when she was 14, she received some terrible news: her father was dying of lung cancer. Less than two months later, in 1965, Nat King Cole died at the age of 47.

During her college years at Amherst, Cole began to experiment with drugs, though they didn't stop her from joining a music group. She played in small clubs on the east coast, using drugs more and more frequently.

Without enough money to pay the bills and to support her drug habit, Cole turned to stealing and got into trouble with the law. Eventually, she became so badly affected by the drugs that she decided to quit on the spot.

She says it was a miracle —the work of an angel on her shoulder. Her drug habit kicked, Natalie's career really began to take off. Only two years after being arrested and almost dying because of drugs, Cole's first record won two Grammies.

In 1976, she married Marvin Yancy, her songwriter and producer. They soon had a son, Robbie, and Cole's life really seemed to be coming together.

"Marriage to Marvin, and Robbie, was like a breath of pure, fresh air," she says. "I was with a man whom I loved and who loved me...we were just so close."

Sadly, the marriage wouldn't last. After four years of being drug-free, Cole was once again using.

In 1983, Cole checked herself into a recovery program, and was finally able to mend the wounds from her difficult past.

After narrowly escaping death once again, Cole decided to record her father's greatest hits, including the phenomenal success Unforgettable: With Love.

Cole, who has fought and won many battles to find personal happiness, says "I'm so grateful for the way my life has turned out."

He sent his camera crew (摄制组)out one evening to film the sunset for him .

“No, sir.” the men answered.

The director was angry. “Why not?” he asked.

“But I want a sunset!” the director shouted. “Go to the airport, take the next flight to the west coast, and get one.”

But then a young secretary had an idea. “Why don’t you photograph a sunrise,”she suggested, “and then play it backwards? Then it’ll look like a sunset.”

A man once said how useless it was to put advertisements in the newspapers.

“Last week,” said he, “my umbrella was stolen from a London church. As it was a present, I spent twice its worth in advertising, but didn’t get it back..”

“How did you write your advertisement?” asked one of the listeners, a merchant.

“Here it is,” said the man, taking out of his pocket a slip cut from a newspaper. The other man took it and read, “Lost from the City Church last Sunday evening, a black silk umbrella. The gentleman who finds it will receive ten shillings on leaving it at No. 10 Broad Street.”

“Now,” said the merchant, “I often advertise, and find that it pays me well. But the way in which an advertisement is expressed is of extreme importance. Let us try for your umbrella again, and if it fails, I’ll buy you a new one.”

The merchant then took a slip of paper out of his pocket and wrote: “If the man who was seen to take an umbrella from the City Church last Sunday evening doesn’t wish to get into trouble, he will return the umbrella to No.10 Broad Street. He is well known.”

This appeared in the paper, and on the following morning, the man was astonished when he opened the front door. The traditional pattern of classroom experience at the college level brings the professor and a group of 20-to-30 students together for a 45-to-50-minute class session two or three times a week. The most common method of instruction is the lecture. When lectures are the main method of teaching in large classes, regular periods may be set aside for a small group under the leadership of an assistant instructor. In cases where a small class size encourages informality, lectures may be combined with discussion sessions based on assigned readings, required textbooks, and other outside materials.

Accurate, legible notes are invaluable aids to the student who is enrolled in a lecture course. Notes should be taken during lectures and when the student is reading the texts before each class. The key to good note-taking is to be able to listen a lot and to write only as much as is needed to record the essence of a point or idea presented by the lecturer. Thus, students should endeavor to identify only the main points and ideas being presented and to write them down in outline form. They should also strive to take good notes the first time and not plan to recopy notes—or to do so only when clarity and conciseness demand it. Finally, they should review their notes for about five minutes on the same day that they take them, and go over them again for about a half hour at least once a week, according to a regular schedule or plan. There is no course syllabus to be memorized; instead, the examinations will be based on the material presented in the lectures and textbooks.

6. Which is the main method of instruction in college according to the passage?

A. Lectures. C. 45-to-50-minute class sessions.

B. Informal talks. D. Small group discussions.

7. Where can lectures and discussions be combined together?

A. In a class where textbooks are read. C. In a small class.

B. In a small group with an assistant instructor. D. In a regular class.

8. The word “invaluable” (Line 1, Paragraph 2) probably means ______.

A. considerable C. meaningless

B. worthless D. valuable

9. If students want to take good notes, they should ______.

A. put down only the main points in outline form

B. write down what the tests will cover

C. write down as much as possible

D. put down what they need

10. After taking notes, the students still need to ______.

A. rearrange the notes so that other students may get a copy too

B. go over the notes for five minutes every day

C. add to the notes other points included in the syllabus

D. review the notes on a regular basis

"I find myself glancing at my watch to see how long I've been standing in line," she said. "Everywhere I go, I notice if the dumpster gates are open or if there's trash in the parking lot."

Ms. Clark is a "mystery shopper"—one of thousands of workers that companies hire to act as regular customers in order to measure customer service, cleanliness, and whether a store is selling a product that meets a company's standards.

Mystery shoppers can be found, or rather, not found, everywhere from restaurants and car shops to convenience and department stores. They play a constant cat-and-mouse game with business employees and managers. However, it's not all fun and games.

Once in the field, a mystery shopper will normally work several stores or restaurants every hour, taking mental notes while inside, then writing down their thoughts after they leave.

It's important for mystery shoppers to be as exact as possible because companies are looking for any information they can use to improve their services. The mystery shopper's report won't say, for example, "Does the trash can need to be emptied?" What an educated shopper will say is, "The trash can to the left of the front door was overflowing with 10 pieces of trash on the ground." It's clear, then, that companies just need the facts.

C.H.A.M.P.S. stands for cleanliness, hospitality, accuracy, maintenance, product quality, and speed of service. Mystery shoppers have to be able to observe and take note of each of these aspects of the restaurant within three to five minutes. Restaurant shoppers might also need to sample the food.

These days, mystery shoppers are armed with a number of high-tech devices, such as a digital scale and a digital thermometer, as well as a handheld PC for recording the whole experience.

It's a challenging job, but a rewarding one. Mystery shoppers can be full time or part time. Full-time workers tend to stick to set mystery shopping practices. Part-timers often choose simpler, reward-based programs. In these programs, the shopper explains himself or herself to the store managers and awards prizes to employees who gave great service.

To be a mystery shopper, it's important to be a good observer, but sometimes it's also important to have the right look. Companies often take on shoppers from certain backgrounds to better fit in

with regular customers. If a secret shopper is sent in, for example, to do an expensive car shop, he or she must look like this kind of buyer. "It's a challenge to do your job without being discovered," Ms. Clark said, "because most of the people that we work for are very aware of the mystery shopping program."

A friend of mine was suffering from a lack of self-confidence after the end of a particularly difficult relationship. He was a bit concerned about returning to the dating world, worried that he had "lost his touch" with women.

Unfortunately, soon after ending his previous relationship, he began to lose his hair, and he saw this as a sign from above that he was supposed to be alone for the rest of his life. "Who is going to want to date a man without hair?" he said to me. He was convinced that good hair was the ticket to a successful relationship. "What will she run her fingers through now?" he asked sadly. "The skin on top of my head?"

When he finally started asking women out again, he only took them to locations where a cap was acceptable —playing in the park, walking the dog, or any kind of sporting event where he

could successfully hide his thinning top. This worked out fine for a while, but there are only so many sporting events to go to, and only so many sunny days to walk the dog.

One of the many great aspects of my friend's character is that he really loves going out for a nice dinner. Back in college, we enjoyed many nights at the most expensive restaurants in town, spending too much money on bottles of wine and delicious food. Unfortunately, none of these restaurants allow caps to be worn. Hearing this, my friend was once again disappointed. Then, one day, he received a note in the mail saying that he had won a free dinner for two at a lovely new restaurant located in the business center of town.

"Congratulations!" the letter read. "You and a guest have been chosen to sample and enjoy our wonderful cooking and atmosphere. Please find the enclosed gift certificate for fifty dollars!" My friend was delighted! Jumping up and down with happiness, he thought out loud about what to wear, what to order, when to go, and... who to take. He couldn't wear a hat into this new restaurant, and wondered if there was a woman out there who wouldn't be disappointed by his bare head.

After worrying for a few minutes, my friend shouted out, "I'm going!" Jumping up from his seat, he took on that all-too-familiar glow on his face as he quickly glanced through his address book for a possible date. At last, he landed on Sarah, the woman whom he had been interested in, from a distance, for months. He sat down in his favorite chair, dialed her number confidently, and asked her to join him—she accepted without even hesitating.

A few nights later, dressed to the nines and without a cap in sight, he and Sarah shared a perfect evening and have been wonderfully in love ever since.

That was the best fifty dollars I've spent in a very long time!
