Step1. Lead-in

T: Good morning, class!

Ss: Good morning, teacher!

T:In last unit we learnt some great women. Today we’ll learn a famous man. Who will it be? At first let’s talk about an interesting topic-----Farming. When we speak of farming, what can we think of?

S1: I can think of farmers and crops.

S2: I can think of plowing and sowing.

S3: Irrigating and fertilizing.

S4: Harvesting

T: How wonderful you are! I can think of rice transplanting. Spring is coming.

Farmers are busy now. Please look at these pictures, what are these farmers

doing?

S5: They are ploughing the field.

S6: He is growing some young plants.

S7: They are inserting the young plants into the field.

S8: They are harvesting the rice.

T: I'm very proud of you! As is known to us all, rice is the main food in our daily life.

It is said that 2.4 billion people to eat rice every day all over the world.

Step2. Discussion

T: Suddenly, if there were noting to eat, what do you think would happen? I’ll give you three minutes to discuss in pairs. Begin, please!

T: Time is up! Any volunteers?

S9: I think if that happened, people would suffer hunger and stave to death.

S10: Maybe people would feel scared.

S11: People would fight for food, even kill each other.

S12: I think the whole country would get into trouble.

Step3. Pre-reading.

T: You all did a good job! In 1942 in our country, this kind of thing happened. Have you ever seen the film “1942”, which showed us how terrible it was? Can you find a way to solve this problem?

Ss: No.

T: It doesn`t matter. One person can. Look at the screen, Let`s enjoy a piece of film about him. Who is he?

Ss: He is Yuan Longping.

T: Who can tell us something about him?

S13: He is a Chinese agricultural scientist.

S14: He is known as “Father of Hybrid Rice”.

T: I think he is China`s most famous farmer, a pioneer for all people. Do you want to know more about him?

Ss: Yes.

Step4 While-reading

T: Let`s come to the reading---A pioneer for all people. Please open your books to Page 10. I`d like you to skim the passage to find out how he helped the world to solve the problem—starvation. That is to say, what is Yuan Longping`s main

achievement? Meanwhile, try your best to figure out the main idea of each

paragraph. Five minutes for you.

T: Time is up. Who can answer this question: what is Dr.Yuan `s main achievement? S15: I can. He grows super hybrid rice that has a high output.

T: Excellent! What`s the main idea of each paragraph? Please look at the screen. Can you match each paragraph with their main idea?

T: So we should save, never waste. If you have the chance to do something to help end hunger in the world, what will you do? Please discuss in group of four. Five minutes for you.

T: I found lots of groups had finished doing it. Which group can share us your opinion?

G1: We think we should invent a new kind of plant to produce more food.

G1: To find a new sort of fertilizer to give rice enough nutrition.

G1: To find some new ways to stop the pollution and protect the soil in the field.

T: How perfect the measures are! I believe one day everybody in the world will lead a happy life.

T: Now please look at the poem ---The Peasants’ Lot written by Li Shen. This is my gift to you. Please read it together. I hope you can remember it when you are having your dinner.

Allan Stewart, a famous Australian legend, was born in March 7th 1915, whose confidence that it is never late to challenge oneself made him succeed in getting four scholastic degrees and even setting a new Guinness World Record in 2006--- he graduated with a master’s degree at the age of 91 as the oldest graduate.

As we know, he has experienced a significant life of constant study. Basically, he acquired his first academic qualification in 1936 and before long the second --- a doctor’ degree was granted. And this aroused his significant interest in study, which led him to a great determination to study law in his eighties and successfully he got a master’s degree in this field in 2006 and eventually, he gained his another maste r’s degree by distance learning through the Internet in 2012, praised by his professor for his reasonable arrangements for his research.

It can be world-widely believed that his confidence it is never late to challenge oneself not only can lead Allan Stewart to a public figure but also will encourage each of us to develop the knowledge in science and improve our spiritual life to reach great achievements in the future.
