第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节:(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

A

My Favourite Books

Jo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series (系列) of lifestyle books. Here she picks her top reads.

Matilda

Roald Dahl

I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl's writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful worlds. Matilda's battles with her cruel parents and the bossy headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, are equally funny and frightening, but they're also aspirational.

After Dark

Haruki Murakami

It's about two sisters —Eri, a model who either won't or can't stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student. In trying to connect to her sister, Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse "night people" who are hiding secrets.

Gone Girl

Gillian Flynn

There was a bit of me that didn't want to love this when everyone else on the planet did, but the horror story is brilliant. There's tension and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It's a real whodunit and the frustration when you realise what's going on is horribly enjoyable.

The Stand

Stephen King

This is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. After a serious flu outbreak wipes out 99.4% of the world's population, a battle unfolds between good and evil among those left. Randall Flagg is one of the scariest characters ever.

16. Who does "I" refer to in the text?

A.Stephen King.

B.Gillian Flynn.

C.Jo Usmar.

D. Roald Dahl.

17. Which of the following tells about Mari and Eri?

A.Cosmopolitan.

B.Matilda.

C.After Dark.

D.The Stand.

18. What kind of book is Gone Girl?

A.A folk tale.

B. A biography.

C.A love story.

D.A horror story.

B

When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother's Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.

My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to

have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker(股票经纪人). I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, "This is Mrs. Tan."

And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, "Why he don't send me check already two weeks late."

And then, in perfect English I said: "I'm getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn't arrived."

Then she talked more loudly. "What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss." And so I turned to the stockbroker again, "I can't tolerate any more excuse. If I don't receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week."

The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English.

When I was a teenager, my mother's broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother's English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother's tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.

19. Why was the author's mother poorly served?

A.She was unable to speak good English.

B.She was often misunderstood.

C.She was not clearly heard.

D.She was not very polite.

20. From Paragraph 2, we know that the author was _____.

A.good at pretending

B.rude to the stockbroker

C.ready to help her mother

D.unwilling to phone for her mother

21. After the author made the phone call, _____.

A.they forgave the stockbroker

B.they failed to get the check

C.they went to New York immediately

D.they spoke to their boss at once

22. What does the author think of her mother's English now?

A.It confuses her.

B.It embarrasses her.

C.It helps her understand the world.

D.It helps her tolerate rude people.

C

There are many ways to find a job. It can be as easy as walking into a neighborhood store to look at its announcement board. Local stores often have areas where people can put small signs telling what kind of service they need or can provide. Such services include caring for children or cleaning houses. Or, job searchers can look in the newspaper. Local newspapers have employment announcements placed by companies seeking workers.

Another popular tool for finding jobs is the Internet. For example, people in four hundred and fifty cities around the world can use the Craigslist Website to buy objects, meet people or find a job. Craigslist says that it receives two million new job listings each month.

Another useful way to find a job is through a college or university. For example, students at the University of Texas in Austin can go to the Career Exploration Center to get help in finding a job. Of course, looking for a job requires knowing what kind of work you want to do. For example, there is a book called What Color is Your Parachute(降落伞)? by Richard Bolles. This book has been helping people choose a career since it was first published in nineteen seventy.

Some experts also help people find jobs. Susan W. Miller owns a company called California Career Services in Los Angeles. She says her company helps people find jobs by first helping them

understand their strengths, goals and interests. Then she provides them with methods and resources to help them find the right job.

23. What is the passage mainly about?

24. By logging on the Craigslist Website, you can .

A. sell your old things

C. create your own announcement board

D. get useful information about 450 cities

There are many reasons why I encourage people to travel, and I know that the experience will make one a better person.

I remember when I was travelling I began to know the world better. The world is not just about me, my small town and home. Although you will meet different people from all over the world, you will realize that people are similar in their dreams, hopes and feelings. Enjoy exploring the different cultures, and you will also find that people are different in some of the things they do and how they live. Once you understand their ways, it need not be strange or scary. Often we read stories about other cultures in books. Only when we visit their areas do we find that those stories are something wrong.

One thing you may find out is that there are problems all over the world. We can’t just get money to send to these areas and hope that will work them out. The world should get involved(干预)and help wherever there are problems. People everywhere should be given a chance. It is so easy to ignore this if one does not travel and explore. One can look around and see that so many people have many challenges worse than ours. One can realize that sometimes our biggest problems are not that big after all.

On your journey you will meet lots of new friends. Talking to strangers and finding about their lives is a great way to spend your time. You will certainly be more confident after having to cope with problems and make many decisions along the way.

When you travel, you have to be on your own in some situations. You will surprise yourself by how well you can do that. All your special experiences could make an interesting book to read. It would be filled with all your adventures and special memories.

Traveling around and seeing so much happening in the world around us is a wonderful experience. If we could all just travel a little more and share our experiences, we would all be better people and the world would be a better place.

27.From paragraph 2, we can learn that ________.

A. people around the world are the same in their hopes

B. books always tell us wrong stories about cultures

C. traveling can help us better understand the world

D. People in different places have strange living habits

28.The und erlined expression “cope with” in Paragraph 4 most probably means “________”.

A. solve

B. avoid

C. meet

D. cover

29. What's the writer's purpose of writing the passage?

A.To share his travel experience with other people.

B.To encourage more people to travel around.

C.To show how traveling can change the world.

D.To tell people how to travel around the world.

30.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?_________

A. People in the world are family

B. Traveling helps one make more friends

C. People in the world share one dream

D. Traveling makes one a better person

Is Fresh Air Really Good for You?

We all grew up hearing people tell us to "go out and get some fresh air." 31 According to recent studies, the answer is a big YES, if the air quality in your camping area is good.

32 If the air you're breathing is clean —which it would be if you're away from the smog of cities —then the air is filled with life-giving, energizing oxygen. If you exercise out of doors, your body will learn to breathe more deeply, allowing even more oxygen to get to your muscles (肌肉) and your brain.

Recently, people have begun studying the connection between the natural world and healing (治愈). 33 In these places patients can go to be near nature during their recovery. It turns out that just looking at green, growing things can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and put people into a better mood (情绪). Greenery is good for us. Hospital patients who see tree branches out their window are likely to recover at a faster rate than patients who see buildings or sky instead. 34 It gives us a great feeling of peace.

35 While the sun's rays can age and harm our skin, they also give us beneficial Vitamin D. To make sure you get enough Vitamin D —but still protect your skin —put on sunscreen right as you head outside. It takes sunscreen about fifteen minutes to start working, and that's plenty of time for your skin to absorb a day's worth of Vitamin D.

A.Fresh air cleans our lungs.

B.So what are you waiting for?

C.Being in nature refreshes us.

D.Another side benefit of getting fresh air is sunlight.

E.But is fresh air really as good for you as your mother always said?

F.Just as importantly, we tend to associate fresh air with health care.

G.All across the country, recovery centers have begun building Healing Gardens.

书面表达:

Dear Sir,

Hearing that you are recruiting some volunteers to welcome the coming foreign students, I am gladly writing to apply for this job.

I do believe that I am very qualified for this voluntary work, because I have a good command of spoken English, since I once won the first prize in the spoken English contest in my school. What’s more, I also have some experience in accompanying foreign friends.

Through this voluntary work, it will enable me to learn English better and meanwhile to broaden my horizons.

Looking forward to your early reply.

Yours ,

Li Hua
