第一节(共10题;每小题2分,满分20分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

I was nineteen. She was sixteen. Our dates were normally on Sunday. We didn’t do much of anything. We were conservative. I was a farmer. Then she took me to her senior prom. It was just ten miles away — in Richmond. I was the only one there without a tuxedo (燕尾服). All those city folks didn’t know what to make of me.

We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in Branson, Missouri. On the drive home, she kept telling me that we were going the wrong way. She was very insistent. I didn’t fight her. I kept letting her turn around because I knew that eventually we’d hit the main road back to Michigan. I knew then her father had dementia (痴呆). So I knew what was happening. Soon, she started forgetting names.

We can’t go out and dance or visit other people. We used to volunteer at the senior center every Wednesday. She’d play the p iano, and I’d turn the pages for her. The hymns (赞美诗) were some of the last things she remembered. Music was her life. But one day she wouldn’t play anymore. And I told the staff that they’d need to find someone else. So we stay here now. But I don’t see this as a bad thing — I consider it an honor. This is what the Lord has given me to do.

She has served this family her entire life. And now it’s my turn to serve her. I might not have her mentally. But I have her. I can still make her smile. She likes to slip her hand under my shirt to feel my skin. Sometimes she starts “yakking”(喋喋不休). She doesn’t say actual words. And it doe sn’t make any sense. But I never tell her to be quiet, because it’s better than nothing at all.

When faced with the decision to get out of bed or have a few more minutes of sleep, which do you choose? Believe it or not, that decision could make a world of difference in the rest of your day.

About 85 percent of Americans use an alarm clock to wake up in the mornings, according to sleep researcher Till Roennenber. And while there are no official numbers on snoozing (打盹), a quick survey of social media makes it clear that hitting the snooze button is a popular pastime.

As to how the snooze button will affect your day, scientists have mixed opinions. Some scientists think people who hit the snooze button in the mornings are actually clever, creative and happy while some said that hitting the snooze button will ruin your life, or at the very least your day. “I feel that hitting the snooze button has got to be one of the worst things that ever happened to human sleep,”rese archer Jonathan Horowitz said. “The chances of you snoozing and actually experiencing a meaningful rest are close to zero.”

According to some sleep experts, when hitting the snooze button, you are in fact confusing your body and mind, and throwing yourself into a deep state of being sleepy. The body needs some time

to wake up, so, when returning to what will be a light sleep for a brief period of time, you are putting your body back into a sleep mode (模式) before waking it again. At that point your body won’t know what it wants, resulting in a sort of half awaken state.

If you really want to take advantage of an alarm clock, the key is to form a healthy sleep cycle. Focus your efforts on getting enough sleep each night and waking up at the same time each day so that when your alarm goes off you feel rested.

14. What is the purpose of Paragraph 1?

A. To emphasize people’s sleeping problems.

B. To explain the importance of making a decision.

B. People hit the snooze button just for fun.

C. Hitting the snooze button is common practice.

D. People take it seriously to use an alarm clock.

16. According to sleep experts what is the influence of hitting the snooze button?

A. People will have a poor sleep.

B. People will become much lazier.

C. People will have a meaningful rest.

D. People will become more creative.

17. T he author’s suggestion on getting the best out of alarms is _______.

A. using an extra alarm

B. trying to relax ourselves

C. making use of willpower

D. forming a good sleep habit

Facial recognition is becoming increasingly common in China, where it has been installed at ATM machines and KFC restaurants. Now the technology has arrived in university classrooms to track student attendance.

Shen Hao, a professor with Communication University of China, is using facial recognition in his six courses to keep track of the attendance of more than 300 students.

Before every class, Shen activates a new attendance system installed on his tablet computer. Students stand in front of the screen one by one to have their photos taken and matched with those in the school’s database.

The system is based on facial recognition technology from Chinese Internet giant Baidu’s open AI platform. Currently, the platform has offered more than 80 different technological services to the public, helping program developers like Shen to develop their own applications.

“The traditional way of tracking attendance is through a roll call. The new system saves time and reduces the workload of teachers,” said Shen.

Students have joked that facial recognition is harsh as it doesn’t allow for skipping classes. “But they support the technology to enter colleges,” said Cui Yuqin, a student majoring in data journalism with the university.

China’s Forward-looking Industry Institute said that the facial recognition market in China surpassed 1 billion yuan (about 150 million U.S. dollars) in 2016 and is expected to hit 5.1 billion yuan by 2021.

Facial recognition technology has already been put to creative use. Beijing’s Temple of Heaven has used it in toilets to deter toilet paper theft. In east China’s Jinan, traffic police installed facial scanners at intersections to catch and shame jaywalkers, and a Beijing university has used the technology to guard its dorms.

Still, if you see one, stay away!

18. What are the advantages of using facial recognition in college courses?

a. It makes it difficult for students to skip classes.

b. It helps students to attend classes easily.

c. It helps save time in classes.

d. It can make teachers match students’ names with their faces easily.

e. It reduces teachers’ amount of work.

A. abc

B. ace

C. bcd

D. bce

19. What does the underlined word “ha rsh” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?

A. Severe.

B. Easy.

C. Harmful.

D. Wonderful.

20. What is the main idea of the text?

A. Facial recognition encourages the development of modern technology.

B. Chinese university uses facial recognition to track student attendance.

C. Baidu’s open AI platform has offered facial recognition technology.

D. Facial recognition technology has many advantages over traditional services.

Complain Politely

Not everything goes the way you want it to. You may go to a restaurant and order a nice meal. But your order is wrong or not cooked properly. You may buy a wrong product that breaks the next day. __21__ However, if you speak angrily to people, they will become defensive. Then it is less probable that they will use polite language to help you. A more effective way to get what you want is to stay calm. Use polite language and a friendly tone of voice. Start with phrases such as “I’m sorry to bother you, but…” or “Excuse me, but could you…?” For example,“I’m sorry to bother you, but I ordered potato soup, not vegetable.” __22__ People like to be asked rather than told! “Could you help me? I just bought this phone case yesterday, but it’s cracked.”

__23__ There is no faster way to make someone defensive than by blaming them. Use the phrase, “I know this isn’t your fault, but...”or “There has been a misunderstanding.” These phrases let people know you are only angry at the situation.

There are honest mistakes, but at times someone may try to take advantage of you. In that case, do n’t say “Hey! Y ou’re trying to cheat me!”__24__ “I understood that…” For example,“I understood that the service c harge was included in the price.”Then give the person a chance to answer.

If you don’t get what you want with polite conversation, ask to speak to a manager or

supervisor. __25__

A. What you want is to get your money back.

B. But usually, you’ll find that polite words and a smile will solve a situation.

C. These kinds of experiences make you want to complain.

D. When trying to correct a prob lem, don’t blame the person you’re talking to.

E. Instead, use the phrase when trying to correct.

F. Expressing your complaint as a question also helps.

G. Assigning blame (归咎责任) isn’t as important as getting a problem fixed!

A On a Saturday night at home while relaxing with friends, a dog showed up at the house. In an attempt to find the legal owner and return the dog, we knocked on the door of the legal owner and an old man opened the door. This was the start of an interesting week. The old man sat down, made himself at home, and gifted us the dog. After a brief visit, he left, and we were now the proud owners of this dog. It takes experience and knowledge to know that our lifestyle can’t satisfy the needs of this dog; the owner that gifted us the dog was mismatched for him as well. Three attempts to return the dog to his old owner failed. (I think he was avoiding us.) Because our lifestyle didn’t allow us to give this poor dog the attention he needed, he disturbed the neighbors. They got involved. After we shared the story, they gained a new perspective and wisely stepped in to help us find a solution. One week later it was decided that dog would be picked up from us by the old neighbor. He would then return it to the previous owner who was more equipped to care for it. When faced with unexpected challenges in life, it helps to see everyo ne’s perspective. We have to look at one another’s perspective to solve a problem with honesty, experience and knowledge. That’s the sign of a leader. Although the old neighbor typically has little to do with leadership, it did bring a neighborhood together to understand one another and work as a team to solve a problem. 1. Why was the dog taken to the author’s home? A. To find food to eat. B. To seek a proper owner. C. The author was friendly to him. D. The old man couldn’t feed him. 2. What did the author find after he was gifted with the dog?

A Nobel winner in literature, US playwright Eugene O’ Neill called him “the father of American literature”. Twain is someone Americans are taught to love. Older relatives, English teachers and the media often praise him. But when you actually take the time to read the adventures of Tom Sawyer, which was first published 140 years ago, you find that his work is more wonderful than you could ever have imagined. The novel describes a young boy named Tom Sawyer growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. He explores the countryside on a riverboat with his friends, falls in love with girls, starts secret clubs and searches for treasure. Twain’s idea of childhood is magical – a time of imagination, wonder and, of course, adventure. More importantly, through the eyes of Tom Sawyer, Twain cleverly makes fun of US culture. For example, Tom hates going to church, and Twain uses Tom to make fun of religion and its old traditions. “Often, the less there is to justify a traditional custom, the ha rder it is to get rid of it,” he writes in one chapter. Twain’s writing is full of these kinds of critical points about culture and politics. That’s why he is so loved in the US –he wasn’t afraid to state his opinions, and he did so clearly. For instance, Twain didn’t like US wars abroad. In 1900, after the US invaded the Philippines, Twain wrote in a newspaper article: “We do not intend to free, but to subjugate the people of the Philippines… We have gone there to conquer.” He also believed strongly in wo men’s right to vote in elections and gave a famous speech on the subject, called “Votes for Women”, in 1901.
