Foxes and Farmers

Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been scolded for killing farm animals. They are officially regarded as 18 (harm) and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.

Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunters hunt a fox across the countryside, with a group of 19 (special) trained dogs, followed by men and women 20 (ride) horses. When the dogs finally catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it.

People who take part in hunting think of it as sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict rules of 21 (behave). But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are 22 (wealth).

It is estimated that up to 100, 000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people who object to fox hunting, because they think it is 23 (cruelty), has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of

confrontation(冲突)between hunters and hunt saboteurs(蓄意破坏者). Sometimes these incidents lead to 24 (violent), but mostly saboteurs interfere with the hunt by misleading rides and 25 (disturb) the trail of the fox’s smell, which the dogs follow.

Noisy confrontations between hunters and saboteurs have become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the hunting of foxes itself. But this year 26 (support) of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. A Labor Party Member of the Parliament, Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to pass a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs 27 (legal). If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.

Thailand has many holidays, and all Thais wait for their holidays, hoping to have time to take a rest after working hard for a long time. There is one holiday that is three days long, from April 13 to 15. We call it ―Thai New Year.‖ This holiday is the time for young people to show love to persons whom they respect. The activities in this holiday depend on each family, but they usually go to visit their families and enjoy spending time together.

Some spend their holidays relaxing at travel spots. All of Thailand is filled with travelers and their families at that time. Some well-known places are waterfalls such as Nam Tok Saw Noi, beaches

such as Pattaya Beach, and islands such as Phuket Island.

The Thai New Year is a good time for all children to show how much love they have for their parents. We have an occasion on which children give some flowers to their parents and then pour some water on them, or they pour some on their grandparents’ hands. We call it ―Rod Nam Dam Hua.‖

We do other fun things. For example, we play with others by pouring some water on them to get them wet. It is a way for adolescent boys and girls to have fun.

Youngsters enjoy these activities; however, they realize this holiday is a day for the family. Thai New Year is not just a holiday. It’s a day to show their love. It is a day worth waiting for, isn’t it?

38. What does the first paragraph tell us?

B. The purpose of spending Thai New Year.

D. The activities arranged for Thai New Year.

39. What do children do to show their love for their parents?

A. They give their parents flowers and then pour some water on them.

Safe House

Keep your home burglar-proof when you’re on vacation.

01 Stop deliveries of newspapers, groceries, catered meals, and other essentials for the entire duration of your holiday. Don’t make your home an easy target for thieves.

02 Likewise, you may want to consider having your mail re-directed, if you’re gone for a long time. That way, the post office is duly aware and won’t send large packages you may receive in your absence.

03 If you have pets, leave them with a friend or send them to a pet hotel. Never leave them at home alone to fend for themselves, even if you’ve left enough food and water out.

04 Inform your neighbourhood police post or the security guards at your condominium(公寓楼)so they can help keep an eye on your places.

05 If you are on friendly terms with your neighbours and trust them, it wouldn’t hurt to pass them a set of your house keys. Get their phone numbers, just in case you need to call them from overseas.

06 Before you leave, make sure you turn off all electrical switches — everything except the refrigerator. You just never know what may short-circuit in your absence.

07 Just to be doubly safe, you could set the timer for your lights to come on at certain times of the day, especially at night. Ditto the radio or the television set.

08 If you own a car, make sure all the doors are locked. Park it in the shade and preferably at an inconspicuous area. Or better yet, loan it to a good friend so it won’t sit idle in the carpark.

41. Good neighbours ar e quite useful when you’re on vacation because _____.

A. car

The Relationship of Language and Culture

Language is the principal means by which we conduct our social lives. When it is used in contexts of communication, it is bound up with culture in multiple and complex ways.

The words people say refer to common experience. They express facts, ideas or events that are communicable because they refer to a stock of knowledge about the world that other people share. Words also reflect their authors’ attitudes and beliefs, their point of view that are also those of others. In both cases, language expresses cultural reality.

But members of a community or social group do not only express experience, they also create experience through language. They give meaning to it through the medium they choose to communicate with one another; for example, speaking on the telephone or face-to-face, writing a letter or sending an e-mail message, reading the newspaper or interpreting a graph or a chart. The way in which people use the spoken, written, or visual medium itself creates meanings that are understandable to the voice, accent, conversational style, gestures and facial expressions. Through all its verbal and non-verbal aspects, language embodies(体现) cultural reality.

Besides, language is a system of signs that is seen as having itself a cultural value. Speakers identify themselves and others through their use of language, they view their language as a symbol of social identity. The prohibition of its use is often supposed by its speakers as a rejection of their social group and their culture. Thus we can say that language symbolizes cultural reality.

And culture, according to the expert, is the product of socially and historically situated discourse communities(话语社区), which are to a large extent, imagined communities, created and shaped by language. But because cultures are fundamentally changing, they are a constant site of struggle for recognition and legitimation(合法性).

Actually, there are many different ways of looking at culture and its relationship to language, which thus raises a basic question; To what extent are world views and mental activities of members of a social group shaped by, or dependent on the language they use? The theory that

languages do affect the thought processes of their uses has been called the theory of linguistic relativity, which tries to prove how linguistic structures influence what people routinely think.

There is nowadays a recognition that language, as code, reflects cultural preoccupations and constrains the way people think. And also, people recognize how important context is in complementing the meanings encoded in the language.

45. In which aspect, do words express cultural reality?

A. Words reflect their authors’ attitudes and beliefs.

B. Words reflect a stock of knowledge about the world.

C. Words refer to people’s common experience.

D. Both A and C.

46. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?

A. People use language only to express experience.

B. Language embodies cultural reality through all its verbal and nonverbal aspects.

C. Culture is the historical and social product which is shaped and created by language.

D. Contexts play an important role in complementing the meanings encoded in the language.

47. How do speakers of a community view their language?

A. They view their language as a system of pure signs.

B. They view their language as a symbol of social identity.

C. They view language as their culture.

D. They view language as a creative product.

48. Why are cultures constantly changing?

A. Because people are looking at cultures in different ways.

B. Because cultures are a constant site for a struggle of recognition.

C. Because cultures are used in various contexts.

D. Because the language which has created and shaped culture is constantly changing.

Carl is studying food science at college and hopes to open up meat processing factory of his own one day. A. / ;a B. / ;the C. the ; a D. the ; the 本题考查冠词,science是不可数名词,用the表示特指是不可能的,后面的factory是一个可数名词,用a 表示泛指。 22.——May I help you? You seem to be having some problems. ——, thanks. I think I can manage. A. All right B. No problem C. It’all right D. There’s no way 很多学生会选择答案D ,我想这是有道理的。A. 23. Interest is as to learning as the ability to understand , even more so. A. vital B. available C. specific D. Similar Be vital to 表示:对.....极端重要;something be available to somebody表示:某人可以得到某物,列句:cooperative medical service is available to all the members of the the mune. C答案specific 不能与to 搭配;D 答案similar to 表示:与.....相似。 本题可以把定于to understand 省掉,也可以把后面的even more so省掉或还原。 Interest is as to learning as the ability 这样可以确定B是错误的,D更是错误的。 Interest is even more than the ability to understand. 很佩服出卷人! 原句:Interest is vital to learning 互联对于学习极端重要。 变化之一:Interest is as vital to learning as the ability to understand 互联对于学习极端重要,就像理解能力对于学习极端重要一样,互联甚至比理解能力更加重要。 24.
