Green Campus

In recent years, extravagance and waste have become increasingly serious in some of the university campus. We can see that papers, bottles and cans are thrown away after use; food is wasted just because of its poor taste; clothes are discarded simply owing to their old fashion. As a consequence, people in mounting numbers put great emphasis on creating a green campus.

There are at least two criteria to distinguish what is green campus. On the one hand, natural resources must be conserved and made full use of, for example, we, as college students, should take the wise use of papers and second-hand textbooks into account. On the other hand, education to build up thrift habits must be promoted by relevant departments and professionals at various levels.

Accordingly, it is necessary for us to take effective steps. For one thing, university authorities should respond with the demand for more rigid conservation of our natural resources, such as water, electricity, and so on. For another, we should enhance the awareness of college students that creating a green campus is of utmost significance to both our society and ourselves.

My Opinion on Campus Love

On campus, lovers can be found here and there. Some people think too much intimacy has a bad influence. It takes lovers too much time and energy. Furthermore, their intimacy can distract their own as well as other students’ attention from study. Campus should be a place for study and should maintain an atmosphere of learning.

On the other hand, other people believe it is OK. Pursuing love is all right to students on campus and intimacy is a natural expression of love. Some scholars of law hold that friendship and appropriate intimacy are an important part of student development.

In my opinion, what all people should do is just leave it as it is. University students are adults, and they can handle their own affairs well enough. However, they have to admit that school is a place where people receive an education and their main task is to study. Therefore, students are expected to behave themselves in proper ways.

A Job-searching Experience

Last Friday my English teacher told me that one of her friends was looking for an English governess.

I asked for her friend’s name and phone number. I determined to seize the chance and have my first job.

I was a little nervous when I went to the wo man’s house. I was told that the talk between us that day would decide whether I could take the job. However, when the woman, Lucy as she was called, welcomed me into her house, I felt much relaxed. I thought as long as I was sincere and friendly I would perform well. The conversation went on smoothly. She seemed much more interested in my habits and hobbies than how good I was at English. It happened that we have the same hobby: playing tennis. I told her about my family and school life. Obviously I succeeded and from then on I went to teach her English every weekend.

Lucy told me later that it was my sincerity that made her willingly accept me. It is true that we can play some tricks while seeking for a job, but remember to be sincere. It’s the secret of my success. How to Deal with Sub-health

With the modernization of the world, people’s standard of living has improved a lot. Then there appears a state of sub-health among people which poses a new threat to them.

There are some typical symptoms for people who are in a state of sub-health. First of all, those who suffer from it often have a headache or backache. Secondly, they feel like having a rest frequently. What upsets us most is that, the situation is spreading countrywide. As a result, more and more workers in big cities are harassed by it, with a percentage of 75 in Beijing, 72 in Shanghai and 70 in Guangzhou

respectively.

Then how can we solve this problem effectively? Experts suggest that the best way to keep ourselves healthy is to do exercises. It is also very important that people should form a good living habit, for example, getting up early and going to sleep early. Only doing so can we keep us healthy.

A Letter of Application for a Student Loan

October 14, 2007

To whom it may concern, I am writing to you to apply for a student loan. As a freshman from the English Department, I have much financial difficulty in continuing my study.

There are five members in my family. My father is the only breadwinner of the whole family while my mother was laid off two years ago. My grandmother has been suffering a chronic illness for more than five years. My younger brother is now studying in a high school. I took part-time jobs during the summer vacation, but what I have earned is far from enough for me to pay the required tuition fees. In order to continue my study, I have to apply for a student loan.

If my request is granted, I will make good use of the money and put my heart into study. I will definitely pay back the loan according to the requirements. I hope that you will consider my application. Looking forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Gao Peng

Cell Phones

As is shown in the chart, cell phones are becoming more and more popular within China. In 1999, the number of cell phones in use was only 24,480,000, but in 2002, the number is more than 100 million, which is a turning point. The newest statistic shows that in 2007 the number has exceeded 500 million.

There are many factors contributing to this development. Firstly, a cell phone has no wires and can be carried everywhere easily. Secondly, a cell phone is something wonderful that we can have fun with news, games, music and chat through sending short messages. Thirdly, the drop in price and the simultaneous improvement in the functions have made it possible for an average person to make use of a cell phone.

The wide use of cell phones has made them more and more indispensable in people’s daily life. The many functions of the cell phone have made certain people reluctant to separate themselves from their cell phone.

Do Libraries Become Useless at the Age of Information?

There has been a heated discussion about libraries at the age of information among people. Some people, especially the younger generation, challenge the value of conventional libraries. When they need any information in their studies or work, they can turn to their computers for help. For this reason, they do not need to go to a library for borrowing or returning one or two books.

While others, including most old people as well as scholars, value libraries. They love libraries because they can enjoy peace and quietness in an isolated spiritual world. And they also have access to rare academic works needed for their studies in the libraries.

In my view, conventional libraries are still available though there is still much room for improving. At the Age of Information, as long as knowledge is respected and cherished, libraries won’t extinct from our lives. On the other hand, libraries should not refuse the latest information technology, which will enable them to regain those young readers.

How to Arrange Your Time at College?

Nowadays, people are divided on the question how students should arrange their school days.

Some people claim students should spend the whole school days in academic studies. However, others contend physical exercise should be a required part of every school day.

As for me, I will choose the latter without hesitation. Being a student, his or her main task is to work hard on his or her academic study. Only by studying hard can he or she obtain adequate knowledge from academic studies. Nevertheless, I don’t think a student should focus on studying too much, he or she should join in other meaningful activities. For instance, doing physical exercise is a good way to make students’ life more colorful and beneficial.

In a word, when students gain knowledge from academic studies, they should not neglect to relax themselves and take regular physical exercise.

Parents Are the Best Teachers

It is your parents who teach you to walk; it is your parents who teach you to speak; it is your parents who teach you to do these basic things in your life. Thus parents should be the best teachers!

First of all, parents know us more than others do. Parents give us life, and I consider that we will spend plenty of time with them. Therefore, they learn about our merit and shortcomings clearly. At the same time, they will help us to shake off our demerit. Besides, parents own much more life experience than us. Sometimes, they are just like our models. And as the saying goes: “Exampl e is better than precept.” Thus we will unconsciously imitate some of our parents' habits and styles of behavior, which means that we can learn good things from them.

Just as the saying goes: “There is no place like home.” And I think there is no teacher like our parents. They are the best teachers in our life.

Intelligence-Nature or Nurture?

Nowadays, there is no agreement among people concerning intelligence. Some people contend that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. And the closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence.

However, others maintain that environment plays a crucial role in our intelligence. For instance, if we put two identical twins in different environments, we might send one to university and the other to a factory where the job is boring, we would find differences in their intelligence several years later.

Just as every coin has two sides, our intelligence is partly born and partly developed. The sure way to develop our intelligence is intelligent parents as well as a good environment.

October 8, 2007

Dear Ms. Riddle,

I would like to know if I could ask for a casual leave of absence from your Oral English class this Thursday morning.

Yesterday afternoon I got a phone call from my cousin, who is now operating a small company in suburbs of this city. He needs an interpreter for two days but cannot find the most trustworthy person, so he wants me to make an attempt. It seems to me that this is a golden opportunity to put what I have learned in your class into practice, but I need your permission of absence. If you think I may go and help him overcome the diffi culty, I am confident that I’ll do a good job and both of us will be thankful.

Earnestly yours,

Tony

Selecting Courses

Recently, people in growing numbers show their concern about selecting courses. In some colleges, students are permitted to pick out their course’s professors freely. The reasons are listed as

follows:

In the first place, students can choose the teacher according to their interests, which will be helpful for their future careers. Besides, selecting courses can reduce the rate of students’ absence indirectly for students usually choose their favorite teachers.

As far as I am concerned, every coin has two sides. On the one hand, students may learn the course better, because they may choose the professor they liked. On the other hand, if the professor who is very popular and a great number of students would like to attend his/her course, the classroom must be overcrowded. It will have a bad impact on the class.

Aid Education in China

There has been a hot topic recently about college students’ being encouraged to help children in the poor and remote areas.

Generally aid-education is helpful in two aspects. First of all, it can broaden volunteers’ horizons in poverty-stricken regions. For instance, it is a golden opportunity for volunteers to experience a completely different life. In addition, college students have to adapt themselves to the harsh living conditions, meanwhile they can make friends with the children.

In my view, the future of China’s education depends on the joint efforts of the society, the government and all the citizens. To sum up, we college students should take the initiative in response to the appeal for supplying help to children in poor regions.

How to Keep Psychologically Healthy?

One in four people will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year. When you fail to manage these problems, they are likely to cause various mental illnesses.

The causes of mental health problems often vary a lot from one case to another. In today’s society, a good number of people are suffering from heavy pressure. Others lack communication skills. In addition, a lot of people are ignorant of psychological knowledge about how to keep mentally fit.

There are a lot of ways to curb mental health problems and keep psychologically healthy. Firstly, find the real cause of your mental health problem and see whether you can do something to make a change. Secondly, learn to relax yourself and take exercise to release the pressure. Lastly, you may find it helpful to talk to your partner or friend about your problem, or seek support and advice from a psychological consultant.

Social Practice

Social practice is a bridge between their theory and reality. So, in recent years, more and more college students choose to take part-time jobs in or outside school.

In the social practice, students are sure to learn more than their textbooks. Their participation in social practice might strengthen their sense of social responsibility. Their close contact with the working people might help them to apply their knowledge to the solution to the practical problem. But many teachers complain that there are fewer and fewer students who pay attention to their study.

In my view, it’s an undenied fact that students break the balance between their jobs and studies, especially when they fall into conflict. But I think students should spend their spare time taking part-time jobs. Timely participation in social practice will benefit them all through their life.

Western Fast Food

Fast food is becoming more and more popular in China, especially among children and teenagers. Today, nothing is more representative of the fast pace of modern society than fast food.

There are several reasons for its popularity. For one thing, it is fast and convenient. Go into a fast food restaurant, and your food will be ready in a minute. Precious time won’t be wasted in waiting-in-line

to order or waiting at your table for your food to arrive. For another, its popularity is also attributed to the clean food, the excellent service and the comfortable environment of the fast food restaurants, and American style.

However, I think that fast food isn’t healthy enough because it doesn’t compose a balanced diet and is low in nutrition. Fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry and we should turn to it only once in a while.

Trying to Renew Knowledge

Today’s society is of knowledge economy age, in which new knowledge emerg es much faster than ever before. Moreover, knowledge plays an important part in the whole economy. Therefore, everyone finds it necessary to renew his (or her) knowledge, otherwise he (or her) will be left behind the society.

There are some ways to update knowledge. On the one hand, one can attend different courses at all types of schools, either part-time or full-time. On the other hand, self-study is, in a sense, a more convenient and practical method by which one can effectively renew his (or her) knowledge.

In my view, I have primarily depended on self-taught method in the recent years. Although I am busy doing daily work, I still insist on teaching myself at night. In this way, I can not only keep up with the swift development of society but also apply new knowledge to my practical work, which benefits me a lot.

Silence Is Not Always Gold

“Silence is gold” is a popular saying in which many people have belief. To these people speaking too much is not a merit. However, if you always keep silent, you will probably miss many golden opportunities instead of obtaining the gold of silence.

Last week I read an article written by an office lady. The company where she worked had two kinds of offices: cubicle office and window office. As a new employee she worked in a cubicle office together with twenty colleagues. Two years later she still worked there but some colleagues who came later than her had moved into the window office. She felt confused. One day one colleague told her that window office w asn’t obtained without request. But believing that she certainly gained one if she did a good job the woman had never asked for it.

From the woman’s experience we learn that silence is not always gold. In the modern society one needs to speak his mind and speak for his own interests.

On a Harmonious Dormitory Life

Dormitory life is an indispensable part of college life. But sometimes the harmony in the dormitory will be disturbed in one way or another.

As is known to all, a harmonious dormitory life is important to college students and benefits all the members. On the one hand, we can have a good rest and put our heart into study. On the other hand, we will have a good mood and enjoy being together.

There are several ways to create and maintain a harmonious dormitory life. Firstly, you have to evaluate your life style and try to get rid of your dirty habits, if there are any. Secondly, when an annoying situation arises, you’ll just have to learn to tolerate each other and co-exist. Thirdly, you’ll have to share with each other and make good friends. In conclusion, we should try our best to build a harmonious dormitory life for the sake of good study and good life.

Long Holidays

Generally speaking, long holidays are good for us college students. On the one hand, we have a lot of time to study by ourselves and thus improve weaknesses and further develop strengths. On the other hand, we can take part-time jobs, which can make us realize responsibility and make ourselves better prepared for social life.

But every coin has two sides. Some students fail to make good use of their time and they are addicted to various computer games. I am afraid that they are likely to ruin themselves in this way.

As far as I am concerned, I will try to make the best use of my precious time. I will spend most of my holidays studying English for that I am very poor at it. In addition, I will take a part-time job as private teacher. By this means, I can earn some money and put my knowledge into practice as well.

Attend Your Classes Regularly

Nowadays it is a very common phenomenon that some university students are late for or even absent from their classes. And still there are some students who slip out of the classroom before the class is over. Class attendance has become a thorny problem to both the students and the teachers.

In fact, it is very important for the students to attend their classes regularly. First, it will ensure you to catch up with the teachers in your learning. That is very helpful to you if you want to do a good job in your study. Second, attending classes regularly is a way of showing respect to your teachers, too. Your teachers will feel bad if the students do not attend their classes, which, in return, will affect their teaching and be no good for the students. Third, attending classes regularly will help to form a good habit of punctuality, which is of great importance for the students to do a good job in the future.

Therefore, we university students should form the good habit of attending our classes regularly from now on. And some day we will benefit from it.

Media and Shopping

With numerous technological advances, various kinds of media have been well developed. As a result, an increasing number of people are fond of purchasing goods with the help of media, such as newspapers, radio stations, TV stations and the Internet.

As we know, every coin has two sides and shopping via media is no exception. On the one hand, it saves much time, money and effort to purchase goods through media since you don’t have to go to the shops in person. Besides, you can choose what you want from an enormous variety of goods on display. On the other hand, you may be cheated sometimes by the false information and suffer a considerable loss.

As far as I am concerned, shopping via media brings great benefits to our life and our economy on the whole. At the same time, we need strengthened supervision over the information released via media. In this way, we can reap more benefits from shopping via media and reduce the possible harm to a minimum.

A Letter of Recommendation

To whom it may concern,

It is my pleasure to recommend my student Li Ming for working in your company. I have been acquainted with Li Ming for four years but came to know him well last year, as he was in the class that I taught, a thirteen-student junior English class.

Students and teachers often remark that Li Ming is blessed with considerable talent. He is gifted for the English language and has acquired good listening and speaking skills for the language. And he won the first prize in our English writing contest last semester. As regards his personality, I find him honest, responsib le, and cooperative. I bet you’ll like him too.

I recommend him enthusiastically. I believe Li Ming will be a competent and responsible employee. And his hardworking and talent will enable him to go further in his career. If you need further information regarding Li Ming, do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards!

Sincerely yours, Leah Kim

Issues on Weight Reducing

Nowadays the people are enjoying a more comfortable life and many people are suffering from obesity. Thus, losing weight becomes very popular.

However, weight reducing is a tricky topic. Some people lose weight quickly by crash dieting or other extreme measures. This will not help them lose weight since they usually gain back all (and often more) of the pounds they lost becaus e they haven't permanently changed their habits. What’s worse, sometimes these extreme measures will affect the individual’s health.

In my view, before one decides to lose weight, he first of all should make it clear whether he should or not lose weight. The best way to find out if you are at a healthy weight or if you need to lose or gain weight is to talk to a doctor or dietitian. He or she can compare your weight with healthy norms to help you set realistic goals. If it turns out that you would benefit from weight loss then you can follow a few of the simple suggestions which are widely accepted by weight reducing experts to get it started.

Information Security

The human beings are stepping into the information society. The information industry develops increasingly, so do the hackers, trick-playing teens, exploring children, fraudsters, and serious white-collar criminals. Thus, information security becomes an impending important issue.

In case of information breach, the victims —a government department, an organization or an institution, or a company, will inevitably suffer great or small loss. Government may be threatened with national security. Companies may lose opportunities to develop new projects. And the public’s and users confidence w ill be damaged.

Then how to deal with this issue? Technology is only a partial solution to information security. What’s more important is that organizations and companies should promote the awareness on information security to its staff. However, since no system can ever be 100 percent secure, a prevention-only approach to information security management is not enough. Companies and organizations should adopt a dual approach to information security management by combining prevention and detection techniques.

Reform of College English Education

The defects that exist in the current educational system are open to more criticism. It is known that interest is the best teacher, but a large part of college English teachers underestimate the effect of int erest and keep preaching in class. Besides, “language environment” is needed to learn a foreign language and the lack of it in Chinese universities has hindered the student’s English learning.

Some bad habits of the students’ learning habits are also on e of the factors of the inadequacy. Chinese students tend to separate vocabulary memorizing, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, and writing, therefore their English is also “broken” in this way. In addition, they are generally reluctant to practice spe aking. This has greatly contributed to the “dumb English” of Chinese students.

The success of the college English education reform requires efforts of both educators and students. The universities should encourage students to speak English in their daily communications and hold more activities with the purpose of promoting students speaking of English. Teachers should focus on attracting students with charms and interest of English in their classes. Students should try to be participants of the learning activities rather than passive receptors.

Nationwide Shortage of Power Supply

According to experts, China is facing a more severe power shortage at present than it did in the second half of the year 2006. In fact, a good number of provincial areas have already imposed power brownouts in the past few months.

There is no doubt that accelerating development of power-intensive industrial sectors, the growing pace of urbanization and low energy efficiency should be blamed for the extensive shortage of power supply. Besides, the situation is worsened by slow power construction and inadequate overall power generation.

In order to ease the current power shortage, a package of measures should be introduced as soon as possible. Firstly, a nationwide campaign should be launched to educate the public about methods to improve efficiency of energy consumption. Secondly, great efforts should be made to curb wasteful duplications and cut irrational demand in some industries. Thirdly, construction of energy and transport projects should be accelerated to expand power supply. Lastly, it is necessary to optimize energy structure and establish a diversified energy consumption pattern. Only in this way can China’s power shortage ease and finally disappear in the near future.

Computers in Students’ Flats

Nowadays, an increasing number of students’ flats have computers installed in them. Computer presents a vivid world in front of students. But there is no agreement among people concerning the effects of computers in students’ flats.

Some people contend that computers in students’ apartments will have a bad influence on their study. Influenced by each other, students will become indulged in computer games or surfing the Internet without paying more attention on study. However, others maintain that computers in students’ apartments will promote their study. If they encounter some problems about study, they can log on the Internet and search for related information without going to ask for their teachers frequently.

For my part, it is the most important thing for students to make proper use of the computers in dorms. While students enjoy the convenience of computers, they should be alert to problems of computers. Addicted to playing games or surfing aimlessly on the Internet will do much harm. Otherwise, any attempt to use computer for study will end up as nothing but an empty dream.

A Letter of Condolence

Dear Wang,

In today’s newspaper, I read about the recent events in your town and I am writing to ex tend my deepest condolences.

It broke my heart to see all those pictures of those whose homes have been destroyed in the tragic hurricane. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a little girl crying on the roof of her house asking for help.

I am really worried about you and your family, and all your friends there. I am crossing my fingers for you now in hopes that you are all safe and sound.

I can only imagine how difficult this time must be for you, and I want to extend to you my unwavering support. Our government and many nongovernmental organizations are initiating various campaigns to urge people to donate money and necessary things to send to America. I donated all my allowance that I have been saving for years.

I feel extremely sorry for this tragedy, and I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Please pass my concern on to your parents.

Yours sincerely,

Meng Fei

My View on Job-Hopping

Some people tend to stick to their positions all the time, as they think the longer one works in a particular field, the more skillful one will be at it. Some have been teachers all their lives. Some devote their life energy to scientific research. Such people love their work and turn out to be specialists in their

own field. They are usually high achievers.

Some are different. They are in the habit of job-hopping, for they always pursue what is new and stimulating. They never seem content with their present situation. Some like to meet more people, make more money and new acquaintances, so they hop from job to job.

As far as I am concerned, I want to be professionally strong. I am not in favor of frequent job hopping, as the saying goes "Jack of all trades, master of none". But I want to have opportunities for advancement and as many colleagues as possible to cooperate and communicate with so as to be more creative and less partial.

Students’ Rating of Their Teachers

Nowadays, it has become as common in colleges and universities for students to grade teachers as for teachers to gra de students. In some universities students’ rating has even become the only source of information on teaching effectiveness.

This, however, has caused great controversy. Some are in favor of the rating system. They hold that since students attend the te achers’ classes everyday, they should have their opinion about their teachers’ effectiveness. Others, on the contrary, are strongly against it. They believe that there is much more to teaching than what is shown on students’ rating forms. Students should n ot be expected to judge whether the materials used are up to date or how well the teacher knows about the subject. These judgments require professional knowledge, which is best left for the teachers’ colleagues.

I think students’ rating of their teache rs is necessary, but it should be conducted in a way that can really shed meaningful light on teachers’ performance. Instead of rating the teachers’ knowledge on the subject, students should be asked to estimate what they themselves have leaned in a course, and to report on such things as a teacher’s ability to communicate with students, his relationship with students, and his ability to arouse interest in the subject.

Should grad students be paid higher than non-grads?

In our country, it is obvious now that the university graduates earn more money than non-graduates. I quite agree with those graduates who have paid a lot for their studies and expect to make more for either himself or his family.

However, it is not so optimistically for those who hope to make it. The critical career competition makes them frustrated due to many factors involved. One of the utmost factors is that they feel what they anticipate is not matching up with what they have found in reality. Many university graduates are not satisfied with what they get for what they have done. As a matter of fact, some of them expect so unrealistic that they immediately lose the credit to the workforce they belong to.

On the contrary, some of the non-grads who are more realistic in career hunting tend to get more satisfied job compared with graduates. Thus what really matters here in salary balance is how one can contribute to the organization rather than what background they hold. The tuition is really high in China. Many high quality students due to this have lost their academic pursuit. Any responsible government should inevitably take this burden and put more money in order to bring up better next generation for the nation.

Green Olympics

Olympic Games, as we all know, is a historic sports meeting. “Green Olympics”, is one of the three themes of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. At present, people's life is being flooded with exhaust gas from automobile, blue film, waste water and so on. Owing to these phenomena, we should advocate “Green Olympics”, and I am positive of this point.

Two possible reasons are as follows. Firstly, environmental protection benefits people's health. In

terms of increasing number of trashes around us, such as white plastic bags, one-off cups and chopsticks, it is sensible of disposing of them reasonably. So we ought to use clean technology, renewable and recyclable materials. Secondly, environmental protection is crucial to our country, and even to the world. Lots of countries attached more attention to embrace the Olympic spirits—“higher, faster, and stronger”.

In conclusion, as college students and the young generation, we should try our best to advocate “Green Olympics”. The 2008 Olympic Games will be a green and unique Olympics.

Living on-campus or off-campus?

Living on-campus makes it easier to get oriented to the way things are done. Plus, you interact more with other students. Keeping up with studies in your first year is hard enough. You should not have to worry about finding your way around and figuring out the university bureaucracy. Living in the dormitory also make a student feel more a part of the university community. There are more opportunities for you to involve in university activities and networking with students and university administration.

Living off-campus, however, is a definite advantage for older students. Finding an apartment, dealing with leases and the landlord’s regulations, cooking meals, and figuring out budgets are all good practice for life after graduation. Off-campus housing also gives students a better perspective on what is going on around them. Campus can be like little worlds. Getting to know neighbors who are not students is good for students coming from difference places.

I think it is better for college students to live on campus during their first two years, and then move into an apartment for off-campus life, while juniors and seniors need the independence of off-campus life.

Internet Harmony

The advent of the Internet ushered in a new era of interpersonal communications and business operations. Undoubtedly, the Net are revolutionizing the daily lives of the people who have an access to it. The primary reason behind the Internet boom roots in its multifunction.

A range of problems lurking behind the frenzy of Internet impressively stand out. A vast majority of Internet users’ mail boxes are saturated with junk mails, an issue which sparks strong criticism and generates the loss of corporate productivity. Porn websites lure a growing number of young people’s visits. False news via the e-mail, BBS and chat room increasingly poses a threat to the social prosperity and stability.

To crack down them, we should push for a more effectively tough law. We should join our forces to launch a nation-wide campaign, including imposing stiff penalties on spammers, shutting down or blocking the lewd sites and introducing a real-name registration system to curb fraudulent messages. We can fully believe that our combined efforts will reap rewards. A clean cyberspace will paint our lives more colorfully.

Dear Freshmen,

I, the undersigned, am a senior in the Computer Science Department of Peking University. I would like to say a few words to you, which I hope would be helpful to you.

To begin with, the change of ideas is of most importance for freshmen to adapt themselves to campus life. During the middle school days, we usually depend upon our teachers at school and parents at home. However, the life and study on university campus features independence, which is essential to our psychological development. In my view, we had better always bear in mind the idea of independence.

What’s more, English learning is a must. On one hand, without CET 4 certificate, we can not get our degree when we graduate from university. On the other hand, when we hunt for job, English level is a deciding factor. Therefore, I do hope that all of you will have a good understanding of the necessity of

learning English well.

Good Luck to you!

Sincerely Yours

Li Ming

On TV Show

TV has been one medium of communication that has connected millions. And it is this link that makes talent hunt shows on the tube amazingly influential. Young faces conveying disappointment or even overwhelming joy have become a common sight on as many channels as your remote allows you to surf.

Some people have their opinions on the TV shows. The advantages of the shows are clear to some people. For one thing, in terms of business, the increasing popularity of talent shows has helped the channels in generating huge income by way of advertising and promotions. For another thing, the TV shows can make the common people have opportunity to show themselves.

Personally, I side with the former opinion. It is a wonderful feeling and a great way to relax for me to watch talent shows and see ordinary people like myself become famous and win cash prizes. As long as talent shows are entertaining and inspiring us, there is great sense in keeping and encouraging them.

How to Eliminate Fake Diplomas?

There has been a serious epidemic of fake diplomas in some big cities recently. Usually a certificate of Bachelor’s Degree costs about 200 yuan, which is really cheap compared with the 4 years of hard work and the pretty big sum of fees involved in normal ways of getting the diploma.

The victims of fake diplomas are first of all employers, who pay high salaries but do not get real talents. People who have genuine diplomas are also hurt greatly. They have honestly spent 4 or even more years and great energy working hard in schools, but cannot get any advantage in job hunting.

To combat the epidemic, practical ability and individual personality should be recognized as important factors of excellent job performance. Besides, effective measures supported by advanced IT technology should be introduced and taken to help employers distinguish genuine diplomas from fake ones.

How to Solve the Housing Problem in Big Cities?

With the development of modern industry, more and more people are flowing into big cities. Accordingly, the housing problem in big cities is becoming much more serious. People in the big city are complaining housing shortage and roaring price of the housing.

As we know, the temptation and opportunities provided by big cities attract people who want to make a fortune in big cities, which is the major cause of housing problem in big cities. Besides, house vacancy and speculating in the housing market are becoming the tough problem. We can’t deny the housing problem has brought about great pressure to the low-income families. Meanwhile, solving this problem will affect the public’s confidence on the government.

To solve this problem, I think building satellite cities in the suburbs is more practical. The fresh air and beautiful scenery in the suburbs will pull many people from the overcrowded city and alleviate the pressure of housing.

Do We Need “Never give up”?

It is widely accepted that “Never give up”, a strong and positive life attitude, is the key for individual success on the grounds that permanent persistence may boost our confidence, strengthen our will, and provide us a second chance for success when we are in hardship. However, others argue that sensible

abandonment is more precious than blind persistence because the wise one should choose the most suitable area for himself/herself.

In my opinion, we need to learn to give up timely. The most immediate reason is that we should adjust our aim carefully in order to go ahead continuously. Sometimes, to give up those unrealistic targets is essential for success. Besides, the attitude “Never give up” exhausts us both mentally and physically. Only through learning to give up can we lead a pleasant and relaxing life. Finally, the temporary comprise means a new start, a beginning bringing new hopes, expectations and opportunities for us.

Passive as giving up sounds alike, it represents a more mature and realistic mentality. If those opposing this attitude can take into consideration of its benefits, then this may seem acceptable in our lives.

1. The Advantages and Disadvantages of Private Tutoring Private tutoring is “in”. A recent investigation shows that about 80 percent of pupils have private tutors. While private tutoring has both advantages and disadvantages, I feel that we should give more thoughts to its negative effects. Such a popular practice clearly indicates that people are attaching greater importance to education. Many parents either missed the chance of obtaining a good education themselves or have been too busy with their own business. When their children meet with difficulties in study, they are helpless. Private tutoring seems to be the only solution. As private tutoring is usually given on the one-to-one basis, the teacher knows the strong points as well as the weak points of the pupil; and teaching is, in most cases, directly to the point. Private tutoring benefits a lot of pupils, indeed. While on the other hand, private tutoring has its own disadvantages. For one thing, it takes up so much of the pupil’s time that they can hardly find enough time for rest or entertainment, which is essential for kids’ physical and mental health. Besides, some teachers, busy “shuttling” from one family to another, tend to neglect their regular teaching duties. What is more, some teachers are eager to help pupils do well on the test, offering the so-called tips for test-taking instead of helping them acquire

You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline below: 1)近几年兴起了一股报考公务员的热潮, 2)分析产生这一现象的原因, 3)你的看法。 Test for Civil Servants In recent years, there are people in expanding numbers who have participated in the test for civil servants. Millions of students choose civil servant as their most ideal occupation after graduation. And among them, the high-educated, like masters and doctors, take quite a large percentage. The craze in civil servant test has attracted widespread attention. The following fundamental causes can account for this kind of craze. First and foremost, nowadays college students face great employment pressure. Civil servant, as one of the most stable professions in today’s China, becomes their preferable choice. Moreover, recently, the welfare and salary of civil servants have been improved greatly, which undoubtedly attracts many people. Last but not least, the high social position of civil servants is a crucial factor drawing many people to take part in the civil servant test. In my opinion, this craze in civil servant test will continue in the following years. However, from the long run, it does not do good to the development of our nation. If most high quality talents gather in the government departments, it might lead to a waste of resources. Accordingly, both the individuals and the government should have a more objective recognition of the civil servant test craze.

For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Attend Your Classes Regularly。You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese. 1. 现在大学校园里,迟到、早退、旷课是常见的现象 2. 保证学生的出勤率对大学教育的重要性 3. 作为一个大学生应该怎样做 Attend Your Classes Regularly Nowadays it is a very common phenomenon that some university students are late for or even absent from classes. And still there are some students who slip out of the classroom before the class is over. Class attendance has become a thorny problem to both the students and teachers. In fact, it is very important for the students to attend their classes regularly. First, it will ensure you to catch up with the teachers in your learning. That is very helpful to you if you want to do a good job in your study. Second, attending classes regularly is a way of showing respect to your teachers ,too. Your teachers will feel bad if the students do not attend their classes, which, in turn, will affect their teaching and be no good for the students. Third, attending classes regularly will help to form a good habit of punctuality, which is of great importance for the students to do a good job in the future. Therefore, we university students should form the good habit of attending our classes regularly from now on. And some day we’ll benefit from it. For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Students’Rating of Their Teachers。You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese. 1. 学生给老师打分已经普遍 2. 人们对其持不同态度 3. 我的看法 Students’ Rating of Their Teachers Nowadays, it has become as common in colleges and universities for students to grade teachers as for teachers to grade students. In some universities students’ rating has even become the only source of information on teaching effectiveness.. This, however, has caused great controversy. Some are in favor of the rating system, They hold that since students attend t he teachers’ classes every day, they should have their opinion about their teachers’ effectiveness. Others, on the contrary, are strongly against it. They believe that there is much more to teaching than what is shown on students’ rating forms. Students sh ould not be expected to judge whether the materials they use are up to date or how well the teacher knows about the subject. These judgments require professional knowledge, which is best left for the teachers’ colleagues. I think students’ rating of their teachers is necessary, but it should be conducted in a way that can really shed meaningful light on teachers’ performance. Instead of rating the teachers’ knowledge on the subject, students should be asked to estimate what they have learned in a course, an d to report on such things as a teacher’s ability to communicate with students, his or her relationship with students, and his or her ability to arouse students’ interest in the subject.

It’s Time to Stop Software Piracy 1. It’s Time to Stop Software Piracy China has often been criticized for the rampant practice of software piracy. Take a look around. We operate on pirated Windows systems, defend PC security with pirated Kaspersky anti-virus programmes, process files with pirated Microsoft Office, draft 3D designs with pirated AutoCAD, refine pictures with pirated Adobe Photoshop, and study English with pirated Kingsoft’s electronic dictionaries and translators. It’s no exaggeration that pirated software is everywhere. The logic behind the phenomenon is simple and clear: if a pirated copy is available for just a tiny fraction of the normal price, not to speak of many of the free downloads online, who would pay for an authentic copy? Cheaper prices aside, easy access is another important factor. With such a large gathering of pirated upgrades around, who would bother to spend time and money searching the stores for an authorized yet outdated version? Despite these apparent benefits, the practice of software piracy should be banned, because it represents unfair competition and by nature it’s a no-win situation. But how? Two approaches are to be taken at the same time: Technically, software developers should enhance their antipiracy engineering, so that cracking the software should be virtually impossible. And legally, the government should also tighten its antipiracy laws and toughen up the penalties, so that violations should be costly. ◇语言点提示: tighten its antipiracy laws and toughen up the penalties加强反盗版立法和盗版惩罚
