Last July, my 12-year-old car died on Cal ifornia‘s Santa Ana Freeway. It was an hour before sunset, and I was 25miles from home. I couldn‘t reach anyone to pick me up, so I decided to take a bus. Not knowing the routes(路线), I thought I‘d just head east. A bus pulled up and I asked the driver how far she was going.―Four more lights.‖she said. There was another bus I could take from there. This clearly was going to be a long night.

She dropped me off at the end of her route and told me which bus to look for. After waiting 30 minutes, I began to think about a very expensive taxi ride home. Then a bus pulled up. There was no lighted number above its windshield(挡风玻璃). It was out of service. But the door opened, and I was surprised to find that it was the same driver.

―I just can‘t leave you here,‖she said.―This isn‘t the nicest place. I‘11 give you a ride home.‖―You‘11drive me home in the bus?‖I asked, perplexed(困惑的).

―No, I‘11 take you in my car.‖she said.

―It‘s a long way,‖I replied in surprise.

―Come on,‖she said.―I have nothing else to do.‖

As we drove from the station in her car, she began telling me a story. A few days earlier, her brother ran out of oil. A good Samaritan(撒马利亚人)picked him up, took him to a service station and then back to his car.―I‘m just passing the favor(帮忙)along,‖she said.

When I offered her money as a thank-you, she wouldn‘t hear of it.―That wouldn‘t make it a favor,‖she said.―Just do something nice for somebody. Pass it along.‖

Most American students have said goodbye to fancy (高档的) fruits these days. In school canteens across the country, cheaper fruits like apples and oranges have taken their place.

―People are afraid to spend now,‖ said Linda Morrow, who owns a shoe and h andbag store. ―They don‘t know what the future will bring.‖

During the financial crisis (金融危机), several of the country‘s biggest banks have been forced to sell or close. This has made lots of Americans afraid to buy expensive goods.

Samira Marino, a restaurant owner in Miami, has found everyone is ordering water instead of juice and more people are sharing meals. In more than two-dozen interviews with The Associated Press across the country last month, Americans talked about their concerns, from worries about small businesses to doubts (怀疑) about simply making ends meet (维持生计).

The crisis began last year. Experts think it was because US banks lend money too easily. Last year a lot of people and companies, who borrowed money, have found themselves unable to pay it back. This left the banks, as well as the people who put their money in the banks, without money. Since the banks borrowed money between themselves and even across borders (国界), the whole world was in trouble.

This month the US government agreed on a $700 billion plan to try to save the financial market. But no one is sure whether it will help or not. President George W. Bush has warned it will take some time.

Last week top finance officials from 20 countries promised to work together to find a way out of the money trouble.

A group of country friends wanted to get together regularly to socialize and play games. The lady of the house was to prepare the meal.

When it came time for Al and Janet to be the hosts, Janet wanted to be the best .Janet decided to have mushroom-smothered steak. But mushrooms were very expensive. She then told her husband. ―Why don‘t you go down on the farm and pick some of those mushrooms? There are plenty in the river bed.‖ She said,‖ No, some wild mushrooms are poison.‖ He said, ― Well, I see small animals eating them and they are ok.‖

So Janet decided to give it a try. She picked a bunch, washed ,sliced, cut them for her smothered steak. Then she went out on the back porch and gave Spot ( the yard dog) some of them. Spot ate every bite. All the morning long, Janet watched him and the wild mushrooms didn‘t seem to affect him, so she decided to use them. The meal was a great success. Janet even hired a helper lady from town to help her serve. After everyone had finished, they relaxed, socialized and played dominoes. About then, the helper lady came in and whispered in Janet‘s ear, she said, ―Mrs Williams, Spot died.‖

Janet went hysterics. After she finally calmed down , she called the doctor and told him what happened. The doctor promised that they would get to her house as soon as possible and he asked Janet to let the friends calm. Soon they could hear the siren as the ambulance was coming down the road. Everyone wondered what had happened except Janet and the help lady. The doctors took each person into the bathroom, gave them an enema, and pumped out their stomachs.

After the last one was finished, the doctor came and said, ― I think everything will be fine now.‖ and he left. They were all looking pretty weak sitting around the living room and about this time the helper lady came in and said, ―You know , that fellow who knocked down Spot even didn‘t stop his car.‖

When you are learning English, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very helpful. When you read, you can not only learn some new words, but also you can learn how to use these English words. When you read, it gives you a good example for writing.

Good reading tips.

Try to read at the right level(水平).Read something that you can (more or less) understand. If you need to stop every three words to use a dictionary, it is not interesting.

Try to increase the number of your new words. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your notebook. But you don‘t have to write them while you read. Instead, try to guess their meaning as you read: mark them with a pen. Then come back when you have finished reading to look them up in a dictionary and write them in your own vocabulary book. Then try to remember them.

Try to read regularly. For example, read for a short time once a day. Fifteen minutes every day is better than two hours every Sunday. Fix(固定) a time to read and keep to it. You could read for fifteen minutes when you go to bed, or when you get up or lunchtime.

Read what interests you. Choose a book or a magazine about a subject that you like, because you are going to spend time and money reading it. So, choose an interesting book.

The setting was a packed gymnasium just before the start of a game against another school. There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team—all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness. While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some. Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players—two junior students and three senior students—agreed. That night in the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision. “We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior students said, “And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us feel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing.” The five left the floor to deafening applause.

教学模式总结如下: Presentation(导入)——skimming(粗读)——listening and reading(听读)——scanning (跳读)——intensive reading(细读)——retelling(复述)——discussing(讨论)——writing (写作)——summary(小结)。 What does Wang Kun do? Where is she now? What’s the article mainly about? Step 3:Listening and reading How many table manners are mentioned in the passage ? What are they ? be supposed to do be not supposed to do Step 5:Intensive reading 1、Why was Wang Kun nervous before she arrived in France? 2、Why did she have no reason to be nervous? 3、How has her French improved? 4、What is one particular challenge she is facing?

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity. According to a government white paper, TCM has been introduced in 183 countries and regions around the world. Westerners' understanding of TCM, however, may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and massage(针灸,拔罐和按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on U. S. swimmer Michael Phelps, back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016. As a matter of fact, Chinese herbs play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is therefore disheartening to know that while 103 World Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine. TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs. Herbs are made into pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs used, their quality and quantity, and the processing of the ingredients (原材料) jointly determine the effectiveness of the prescription. Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs. Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescriptions handed down from the past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyou's winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria (疟疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time. (1)Why does the author mention the example of Michael Phelps? A. Because he was injured in his swimming. B. Because cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment. C. Because westerners know a little about TCM. D. Because westerners attach great importance to TCM. (2)Why don't some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine? A. Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases. B. Because they only approve the practice of acupuncture. C. Because Western medicine is more effective. D. Because medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly. (3)Compared with Western medicine, what is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph 4? A. The methods of planting herbs. B. The effectiveness of prescription. C. Lacking in standardization. D. Its stable functions.
