The cost of medical care in the US is very high. The time and money that doctors spend on their medical education is probably one reason for this problem.

A visit to doctor’s office costs from fifteen dollars. It is almost impossible for most people t o pay for the medical care they need. Many people in U.S. think that doctors are overpaid. Most doctors, however, disagree. They say that they are required to study medicine for a long time.Tuition for many years of medical education costs a lot of money.Doctors say that it is necessary for medical students to borrow money from banks to pay their tuition.Because this money must be repaid to the bank, young doctors need to receive a lot of money from their work. So,they charge people high fees for medical care.

Therefore,it is possible that the high cost of medical care in America is unnecessary, because high tuition is one cause of high costs. One way to lower costs would be to have medical school that are free or have low tuition.

16 Many American people do not have the medical care they need because______.

A.they don’t think it necessary to have medical care

B.they are not willing to pay high tuition for doctors

C.they haven’t got enough money to pay for it

D.they don’t want to spend much money on it

17 The main reason for the high medical cost mentioned in the article is that____.

A.tuition in medical school is high

B.the price of medicine is too high

C.doctors charge more than needed

D.doctors must pay money to banks

18 The main idea of the article is that________.

A,a visit to a doctor’s office may cost as $5 to $50 in the U.S.

B.the cost of medical care is the main reason for the high costs in U.S.

C.medical care in the U.S. costs a lot of money because doctors want to be rich

D.high cost in medical care is a big problem with the average American people

19 Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.In order to become rich, one should be a doctor in the U.S.

B.The money doctors borrowed from the bank must be repaid before graduation.

C.The high tuition for medical schooling results in the high cost of U.S. medical care

D.It’s impossible to lower medical students’ tuition because they have to stay long in school.

20 According to the writer of the message, one way to lower medical costs would be______-.

A.to have fewer medical students

B.to set up more medical schools

C.to improve doctor’s quality

D.to cut medical students’ tuition

A study of cell phones be the Swedish Radiation Protection Research Institute has found no “consistent evidence” of an increased risk of cancer from cell phone usage.

Studies have differed on whether the use of mobile phone increased the risk of cancer as they have become increasingly popular.

The governmental institute asked Dr. John Dr. Bioce Jr and Dr.Joseph K. McLaughlin of, Maryland, USA,to assess published epidemiological(流行病的)research on the subject.

The review looked at nine studies since 1996 that included factors such as type of phone, duration and frequency of use and brain tumor(肿瘤)location.

“No consistent evidence was observed for increased risk of brain cancer(or other forms),” the scientists said in the review, released Wednesday.

The agency acknowledged public concern about the issue and said many studies were still being performed and continued follow-up was needed on any possible carcinogenic(致癌的)effect linked to mobile phone usage.

“You can never say that somethin g is without risk, but at least we can that there is no scientific evidence for a causal association between the use of cell phones and cancer.”said Lars—Erik Paulson,a radiation expert with the agency.

The review singled out research by Swedish scientist Lennart Hardell, which said that long-term users of old fashioned analog(模拟)cell phones were at least 30% more likely than non-users to develop brain tumors.Never digital phones send less radiation than older analong models of the sort studied.

Hardell, whose study was published recently in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention, studied 1,617 patients with brain tumors and compared them with a similar-size group of people without tumors.

The review said Hardell’s study and some U.S. reaearch with similar findings were “non-informative,either because the follow-up was too short, numbers of cancers too small,or because of serious limitations in reseaech methods.”

It contrasted those with three studies in the U.S. and studies in Finland and Denmark, which Paulson said used more reliable sampling methods and were based on medical reports rather than

interviews with patients.

Those studies found“a consistent picture…that appears to get rid of,with a reasonable degree of certainty ,a direct and inevitable association between cell phones and cancer,”the agency said.

21 Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A The researchers had reached agreement concerning the possible danger of using mobile phones.

B The researchers concluded that there might not be direct relationship between the use of mobile phones and chances on getting cancer.

C The researchers found that the more we use mobile phones, the more likely we are to have cancer.

D The researchers agreed that we should use less mobile phones since there are many cases of cancer among mobile phone users.

22 The institute in Rockville suggested that more research should be made on whether there is actually possible cancer-causing effect linked to_____.

A the type of mobile phone

B lifetime of the mobile phone

C mobile phone usage as a whole

D the frequency of using mobile phone

23 According to Hardell, there are more chances to get brain cancer among____.

A people who have long been using old-type cell phones

B people who have used cell phones for a long time

C people who only use new types of cell phones

D people who use cell phones occasionally

24 According to the review ,Hardell’s study and some others’researches with similar findings were ____.

A both informative and practical in terms of research methods

B less reliable in view of their limitations in research methods

C less convincing because of inadequate number of cases involved

D not perfect due to limited methods and short follow-up researches

25 What can we infer from this passage?

A Mobile phones may become more popular.

B Some people may stop using mobile phones

C)The public may not be affected by the research findings

D people are not concerned with researches done in this field.
