Directions:For this part, you’re allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay. You should start your essay with a brief description of the picture and then express your views on the importance of doing small things before undertaking something big. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.

Dad, I'm a bit worried about disposing of nuclear waste(处理核废料)

If you can empty the dustbin(垃圾筒)here, you can do anything.

题目中其实早就已经透露了主题了(express your views on the importance of doing small things before undertaking something big.)

This is a funny and instructive picture. In the picture, there is a father talking with her son. Having heard his son said “ Dad, I am a bit worried about disposing of nuclear weapon.” The father replies that, “ If you can empty the dustbin here, you can do anything”, pointing the garbage can beside him.

Funny and common as the picture seems, however the implied meaning of this picture should be taken into consideration seriously. It reflects that the father intends to advise his son to do small things before undertaking the big. Unquestionably, doing small things is the first step of success. On the one hand, by doing something small, we can acquire experience, master skills and make ourselves to be more patient. On the other hand, we can be well prepared for further challenges in the course of fulfilling small things.

From my perspective, under no circumstances should we undervalue the power of doing small things. Only in this means can we achieve our goal finally. “Great achievement only belongs to those who can do small things perfectly.” Aristotle once said. (Words 190)

Where does the honey come from? Bees live on food from flowers. When a bee rests on a flower, it tries to go to the center of it. There it takes in as much food as its body hold. Then it flies to take the food back to the hive. At the hive, bees change this flower food into honey. Then they fly away for more food. How do the bees know where to find the best food in the sweetest flowers? One bee acts as a guide. When it discovered good flowers, it flies back to the hive to tell the others. It does this by dancing for them. The bee dances on one side. This tells the other bees which way to go to find the flowers. But that is not all. The bee dances for some time. And the length of its dance tells the other bees how far they must fly to reach the flowers. When the bees see the dance, they know where the flowers are. Then fly away and return with more food for the hive. Without that dance we might never have sweet honey to eat.

1. No Pains, No Gains The height which great men reach and keep is not attained by a sudden flight. Most of us feel envious of the famous and successful people. We do not understand why they are so popular and honored while we are mere simple common folks. In our misconception, we think that people are prosperous because they are especially gifted or that they are “just lucky”. All these have taken root in our stubborn minds, and we refuse to believe that most great men have a mind which is the same as, or perhaps even simpler and duller than ours. Yet, their triumphs are great. Why? Because they are apt to fight difficulties with perseverance and without fatigue, undergo sufferings without minding the wounds; they realize that hardships form the road which they must pass through before reaching their destination. Their endurance is more powerful than that of ours for the simple reason that they submit without complaint to each storm in life. 2. Don’t Give Up If we would ever accomplish anything in life, let us not forget that we must persevere. If we would learn our lessons in school, we must be diligent and not give up whenever we come across anything difficult. We will find many of our lessons very hard, but let us consider that the harder they are the better they will be for us if we will persevere and learn them thoroughly. But there are some among us who are ready to give up when they come to a hard example in mathematics, and say, “I can’t do this.” They never will if they feel so. “I can’t” never does anything worthwhile; but “I’ll try” accomplishes wonders. Let us remember that we will meet with difficulties all through life. They are in the pathway of everyone. If we will only try and keep trying, we will be sure to conquer and overcome every difficulty we meet. If we have a hard lesson today, let us strive to learn it well and

环境问题-- cause We can blame some environmental damage on ignorance or poverty, but most damage has nothing to do with either. A major cause of environmental problems is the fact that clean air, clean rivers, and other natural resources are public, not private, possession. In Aristotle’s words, “What is common to the greatest number gets the least amount of care.”Individually, we gain by using these resources and so, in our own interest, we keep doing so. Eventually, the resources are damaged or run out, and then society as a whole has to pay the cost. 空气污染—cause Industry is another major cause of air pollution. Burning coal, oil and wood release carbon dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere. This is called the greenhouse effect. The result of greenhouse effect is global warming. Many scientists believe that global warming will cause worldwide flooding due to rising sea levels and serious climate change. Not everyone agrees with the idea of energy shortage. Some argue that the future will be better. They say that we will know better ways to control our environment and that technology will provide us with new resources. For example, solar energy will replace coal and oil. Plastic will replace tin and other metals. In fact, this has been happening for some time. However, producing some of these new resources may contribute to the second major environmental problem—pollution. In today’s society, it is easy to say that women have the same rights as men. Women can vote, drive a car, go to school, and have any job they choose. However, are women and men really equal? The answer to that question might surprise you. When we speak of the impact of technology on society, we always talk about the positive effects of technology. We talk about the Internet as an information resource and a communication platform, but conveniently ignore the fact that an overexposure to it leads to Internet addiction. We often discuss how technology has made our life easy but easily forget that it has made us overly dependent on it. Have you ever thought of the negative impacts of technology? Consider a party person who may show good social skills, but the habit of partying late at night can disturb his sleeping pattern, which in turn can affect his physical and mental health. Now, consider a person who religiously follows his diet and exercise, but ignores attending social events and interacting with friends. This lack of social mobility can also be bad for mental health as he may feel isolated, which may lead to depression. So, we can see that to be a healthy person not only requires a healthy body and mind, but also a healthy social life. The three factors are interdependent on each other. Being social—effects

Conversation one: M: Hello. Matt Ellis speaking. W: Hello, Dr. Ellis, my name’s Pan Johnson. My roommate, Janet Holmes, wanted me to call you. M: Janet Holmes? Oh, that’s right. She’s in my Shakespearean English class. Has anything happened to her? W: Noth ing, it’s just that she submitted a job application yesterday and the company asked her in for an interview today. She’s afraid she won’t be able to attend your class this afternoon though. I’m calling to see whether it would be OK if I gave you her essay. Janet said it’s due today. M: Certainly, that would be fine. Uh, you can either drop it off at my class or bring it to my office. W: Would it be all right to come by your office around 4:00? I’m afraid I can’t come any earlier because I have three classes this afternoon. M: Uh, I won’t be here when you come. I’m supposed to be at a meeting from 3:00 to 6:00, but how about leaving it with my secretary? She usually stays until 5:00. W: Fine, please tell her I’ll be there at 4:00. And Dr. Ellis, one more thi ng, could you tell me where your office is? Janet told me where your class is, but she didn’t give me directions to your office. M: Well, I’m in Room 302 of the Gregory Building. I’ll tell my secretary to put the paper in my mail box, and I’ll get it when I return. W: I sure appreciate it. Goodbye, Dr. Ellis. M: Goodbye, Ms. Johnson. Conversation 2: W: How are things going, Roald? M: Not bad, Jane. I’m involved in several projects and it’s a long working day. But I’m used to that so it doesn’t bother me too much. W: I heard you have moved to a new house in the suburb. How do you like commuting to London every day? Don’t you find it a string? M: It was terrible at first, especially getting up before dawn to catch that 6:30 train. But it’s bearable now that I’ m used to it. W: Don’t you think it’s an awful waste of time? I couldn’t bear to spend three hours sitting in a train every day. M: I used to feel the same as you. But now I quite enjoy it. W: How do you pass the time? Do you bring some work with you to do on the train? M: Ah, that’s a good question. In the morning, I just sit in comfort and read the papers to catch up with the news. On the way home at night, I relax with a good book or chat with friends or even have a game of bridge. W: I suppose you know lots of people on the train now. M: Yes, I bumped into someone I know on the platform every day. Last week I came across a couple of old school friends and we spend the entire journey in the bar. W: It sounds like a good club. You never know. I may join it too.

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a tempera-mental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust. Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young. When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at
