Hardship: A Blessing in Disguise

In his book Twilight of the idols, the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche ['ni:t??] wrote: “What does not destroy me makes me stronger.” For Nietzsche, adversity was a means of strengthening the mind and soul. In my opinion, although not everyone may survive misfortune, those who do are often transformed in profound and positive ways.

To begin with, adversity can strength people and make them more resilient/strong-willed. By surviving tragic circumstances, such as divorce, unemployment or poverty, people can gain the emotional and intellectual resources necessary to confront and overcome any future difficulties they may face. For example, unemployed workers who struggle for an entire year before finding a job will have developed perseverance and willpower as a result of not having given up. They will also have learned various coping strategies and methods, such as utilizing social support systems, confiding in trusted friends, or writing a diary about their experiences, which enables them to get through difficult times.

In addition, suffering hardship can teach people to be happier and to live life to the fullest. It can enable them to see life in a brighter light, spend less time worrying about trivial matters, and cherish every day as if is were a precious gem. Survivors of deadly natural disasters, for instance, will be thankful to have escaped with their lives. Similarly, those who battle and survive cancer will regard themselves as blessed and learn to cherish life more than ever before. Thus, they will cherish their life more instead of idling way their time.

Last but not least, sustaining hardship can lead one to a new direction in life or even a higher calling. In 1981, John Walsh suffered the kidnapping and murder of his six-year-old son, Adam. He later went on to become a prominent anti-crime activist and the host of America’s Most wanted, a TV show that has led to the capture of over 1000fugitives. As another example, in 193, Joanne Rowling (now widely known by her pen name, J.K. Rowling)was unemployed, suffering from depression and had contemplated suicide. It was in this state of despair that she conceived the first rudiments of the best selling Harry Potter series.

There will always be some people who, in the face of physical or emotional hardship, fall into an abyss and are never heard from again. However, as we have seen, suffering can be turned into strength. Those who make it through to “the other end”will have gained resilience, a greater appreciation for life, and even a new life direction as a result of having conquered adversity.
