Unit 6 Are you on board

Interactive listening

Listening task 1

American: American football is the most exciting sport to play and watch on television.

Spaniard: I disagree with you. Soccer is the most entertaining sport because it takes more skill than football. American: I agree that soccer is a game of skill; on the other hand, football has more contact so it is the most entertaining of two.

Spaniard: Many people do not like to watch contact sports, so they prefer soccer to football.

American: That is a good point. I must admit that soccer is popular all over the world; on the other hand, football is very popular in the United States of America.

Spaniard: The USA has a lot of unique sports-American football, baseball, basketball. They're fun to play. But soccer dominates the world for a reason. It takes skill, it's fun to watch, and it's fast. Basketball is a pretty fast sport, but football and baseball take so long to play". They can get so boring.

American: I understand why you might think that. American football and baseball do seem a little boring at first. But once you know the rules and understand what's going on, they're really fun games to watch. We?ll have to watch one together sometime.

Spaniard: I'd enjoy that.

Listening task 2

Spaniard: Perhaps the reason you don?t find soccer entertaining is that you haven?t spent much time playing this sport. In Spain kids grow up playing soccer. I play soccer before school, during school, and after school, not to mention on weekends. If you play soccer, you would love it as much as I do.

American: You are right. I have only played soccer a couple of times. And although I had fine playing this sport, I simply enjoy football more. Football is a more aggressive and challenging sport. Have you ever played football?

Spaniard: I have never played football. I have watched it on TV once, but it didn?t make any sense to me at all. There seem to be a lot of rules and not much action. I think I?d enjoy it if you would teach me some technique. Would you be willing to teach me how to play football?

American: I would love to teach you! Let us make a deal. You teach me to play soccer, and I will teach you to play football. Does that sound like a good idea?

Spaniard: I like that idea very much. Let us start practicing tomorrow!

Conflict

I had a conflict with my boss last week. We did not communicate well at all, and it ended up resulting in a waste of money and time.

I work for a school in California, and we were having a staff meeting one afternoon. In this meeting, David, my boss, informed us that there was a staff training in two weeks. I knew I was going to be on vocation that

weekend. David looked at me and the other instructors and said, "It is important that you guys attend this training." I looked him in the eyes and said, "I can't, David. I have a prior obligation.” He ignored what I said, and signed me up anyway. I tried again, figuring he must not have heard me, "David, there is no way I can make it that weekend." He replied, "You have to." He then proceeded to continue with the meeting as if he had not heard me.

A couple of days later, he was reminding us of the training we were supposed to attend. He looked at me and said, "You need to be there, and I already signed you up” I just looked at him, an d said nothing. At that moment, I knew he had heard me say I could not make it, and he just did not care that I had made plans. I was furious. He expected me to cancel my plans with no notice, and follow his instructions. I did not remind him again that I could not go; I simply did not show up at the training.

The next week at work, he was upset with me, but I reminded him, "David, I told you I would not be there- it was impossible for me to show up that weekend.” He just stared at me. Then he simply said, "Fine." That was it. We never talked shout it again. I don't believe I handled that conflict well, but it's water under the bridge.

The Melting Pot

The United States of America is made up of people from all over the world. It is a country that at one lime invited people from all over Europe to join its numbers and to make it their home. Today the United States is a country of all colors all cultures.

The Native Americans were the first people of all to live on the land that is now called the United States. They were sadly pushed aside to make room for the “new” people who were coming to America to make this “new land”their home. Many Native Americas were killed outright, and many more died from the new diseases that European settlers brought wish them. The treatment of Native Americans is a very shameful incident in U.S. history. Most Americans feel a deep sense of guilt and regret about the destruction of Native American culture and the seizure of their lands.

Unfortunately, the United States no longer looks like the beautiful country that the Native Americans knew. Part of the reason for the transformation was simply the development of the government and the industrial revolution; the other part was the culture and the types of people that now populate the land.

Because the United States of America is considered to be a melting pot of people (people from all different countries and cultures), it is difficult to say where American culture and American traditions originated. They are a b lend of the lives of all the people who settled there over the past 300 years. The United States? tradition and its trademark is its unique makeup and mixture of people.

What's the story?

Yesterday I was at a karaoke lounge and my friend would not allow me to sing a song. Although this friend is a really good singer, he's also very arrogant. He wouldn't let me sing because he said I had a bad voice, and he insisted on singing all the songs while we were there.

For half an hour, I just sat there and watched while he sang all the songs. Then, I decided to take action. I asked him nicely if he would give me the microphone so I could sing. When he refused, I became really angry. I said it wasn't fair that he got to sing all the songs while I just sat there. I also told him I thought I was a good singer.

He was really rude and cruel to me. He laughed at me and told me I was a horrible singer! Not only was I mad, but my feelings were hurt and I wanted to cry. Then I did something that I now regret; I threw my drink on him and stormed angrily out of the restaurant while I was crying. Everyone in the karaoke lounge saw me do this and watched me silently as I walked out. Even though my friend was wrong and he was being a jerk, I shouldn't have acted that way. That was my favorite karaoke lounge and I'll never be able to go back there again. Plus, I made my friend look bad in front of everyone and he had to leave right after me. I'm so embarrassed about what I did.

Unit 7 How are you feeling?

Listening task 1

Christina: Amanda, is that you?

Amanda: Christina? I haven't seen you in ages. Wow, you look great? How do you stay so fit?

Christina: I?ve been watching what I eat, and 1 try to work out at least three times a week.

Amanda: Good for you. I've been meaning to go to the gym, but I've been so busy lately. It was also hard to follow my diet during the Holidays.

Christina: I know, it's so easy to fall off the bandwagon.

Amanda:I did make a New Year?s resolution to get in shape, but I' m not sure if I'll succeed.

Christina: If I were you, I would try to find a gym closer to your office so you can work out before work. Also, make sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Amanda: Those are great ideas. There?s a gym very close to my office. I'll check it out tomorrow.

Christina: And maybe we could go running together some time. 1 get bored if I just go to the gym. Amanda: I hate running. I'd much rather go swimming or hiking.

Christina: Well, maybe we could go hiking sometime, then.

Mark: Ohhh...

Susan:Mark, what?s th e matter?

Mark:I feel awful. I think I?m getting sick.

Susan: What are your symptoms?

Mark: Well, I?ve got a headache, a running nose and a sore throat. I feel really tired and my body aches all over.

Susan:Hmmm, it sounds like you?re got a bad cold. Ha ve you taken anything for it?

Mark:I?ve been taking cough drops far my throat, and I took same cold medicine.

Susan: That?s a good start. If I were you I?d try to get some extra rest. You should also drink plenty of fluids and take some extra Vitamin C.

Mark:okay. Maybe I should go home now so you don?t catch a cold too!

Susan:Before you go, let me make you some of my mother?s famous chicken noodle soup. When I was young she used to make it for me whenever I got sick. I think it really helps.

Mark: Thanks! My mom used to make me gargle with salt water whenever I had a sore throat, but I think the soup will taste much better.

Home Remedies

People have many different ideas about how to stay healthy, and what you should do if you get sick. For serious illnesses, people tend to go to the doctor, but for minor ailments, they often rely on home remedies. For example, chicken soup is supposed to be good for a cold, and sane people say that a spoonful of sugar will cure the hiccups.

There are also some old proverbs that give advice about how to stay healthy, such as, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, or "Early to bed, early to rise keeps a mars healthy, wealthy, and wise.”

While many home remedies and proverbs are just myth, there is often some truth to them. Apples are indeed filled with beneficial nutrients, and doctors recommend at least seven to nine hours of sleep per night to maintain good health and a clear mind. Doctors have not been able to show any direct link between chicken soup and faster recovery from a cold. However, studies show that sometimes the positive mental impact of taking something, even if it?s just a placebo can help people to recover more quickly.

Known as the pioneer of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale was born to a wealthy English family in Florence, Italy in 1820. Like many young women of her social class, she was expected to marry and live a comfortable life. However, Florence felt called at a young age to go out and help others. She decided to pursue a career in nursing, although this profession had a poor reputation in the 1800s. This was a very unusual step for a daughter of a wealthy Englishman! After refusing to marry a man her mother had chosen she went to Germany to train in a hospital. When she completed her studies, she served as a supervisor at a hospital in London.

When the Crimean War broke out, Florence decided to take a team of nurses to the battlefront to care for the wounded soldiers. When she arrived there in 1854, she was disturbed by the unsanitary conditions of the hospital. She had it cleaned, and brought in the necessary medical supplies. Florence carried a lamp with her as she walked the corridors of the hospital late into the night caring for wounded men, and she became known as "the lady with the lamp.”She did not let risks to her own health and safety prevent her from caring for her patients.

Florence was an advocate for better sanitary conditions in hospitals and clinics, and recognized the importance of keeping detailed and systematic medical records. Based on her experience,

Florence started nursing training schools and also wrote a book about nursing entitled "NursingNotes.”1n her later years, Florence was unable to travel because of poor health caused by working under difficult conditions. However, many people came to her for advice. For example, during the U.S. Civil War, the U.S. government asked her for advice in setting up military hospitals.

Florence Nightingale died in 1910. She is remembered for her role in founding the nursing profession, and for the positive example she set for future nurses by her commitment to hospital administration and patient care. Each year International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12, Florence Nightingale?s birthday.

What's the story?

I like to go jogging in the morning to stay fit. One day, I was out running my regular route, and I suddenly noticed something strange: usually there were few people on the road, but there were 100 to 200 other people

out running that day. Even though this was very unusual, I didn't think a lot about it. I was irritated that the road was so crowded, but I just kept running as usual. Toward the end of my run, I saw many balloons, and I could hear the sounds of music and people cheering. Now I knew that something was going on! I ran over to check it out, but there was a ribbon in my way. I pushed through it, and all of a sudden everyone started clapping and patting me on the back. Someone else put a medal around my neck and shook my hand. I finally realized that there had been a race that morning, which I had apparently just won! My picture appeared in the newspaper the next day and I still have the certificate they awarded me. It was the first and only race I've ever run in! Idioms

pain in the neck: nuisance, annoyance

to see eye to eye: to agree

to stick out like a sore thumb: to be obviously different from the majority. This usually has a negative connotation

to put one's finger on something: to identify a problem, difference, reason, etc.

to pull someone's leg: to trick someone in a teasing (rather than malicious) way

1. She said that she changed something in this room, but I can't quite put my finger on what it was.

2. That dog is such a pain in the neck. He's always barking and making noise in the middle of the night.

3. Did you really invent the light bulb, or are you just pulling my leg?

4. Among all of those red roses, that yellow rose sticks out like a sore thumb.

5. After many hours of discussion, the people on both sides of the issue were finally able to see eye to eye

Unit 8 Let's Rock'n Roll

Jennifer: I just bought a new CD by my favorite artist!

Kevin: Really? Who?s your favorite artist?

Jennifer:Don?t laugh, but I really like listening to the standards. My favorite artist is Frank Sinatra.

Kevin:Frank Sinatra? That?s what my grandparents used to listen to!

Jennifer:I know, but the music from the 1940s and …50s is just so much more beautiful and sentimental than today?s music. Those songs actually had a melody unlike the rap and h ip-hop you enjoy.

Kevin: Hey, my music has a melody, but it also has a beat so I can move to it. Old-time ballads from the 1950s are boring.

Jennifer: I disagree. These old songs talk about love and romance and make you feel happy when you listen to them.

Kevin: Pretty sappy stuff if you ask me! At least some of the new rap artists I listen to speak out on social issues that affect us today.

Jennifer: Do you mean guns, cars, and drugs? Those aren?t social issues. That?s just trash!

Kevin: To each his own. I still think there?s a lot to be said about the lyrics and music of these urban artists. Why do you think this music is so popular? Look around the store. Almost half of the shelves are filled with hip-hop and rap music, NOT you oldies from the …50s.

Jennifer: You?re right, but I wish that was not the case. I get so tired of hearing rap and hip-hop on the radio and in the stores. There doesn?t seem to be any place I can escape it.

Kevin: Well, I will probably never convince you to give my music a chance, bu t that?s what is great about freedom of choice…we can both choose what we like best!

Listening task 2

Kevin: Jennifer, is there any other style of music, besides standards, that you listen to?

Jennifer: Sure, I enjoy a lot of different types of music including rock, pop, country, even a little gospel now and then.

Kevin: Gospel? You really are old for your age! Only old ladies and hillbillies from the South listen to gospel. Jennifer: That?s not true. Many of my friends from church listen to gospel and othe r inspirational music. You should give it a try. It?s very different from what our grandmothers listened to.

Kevin: A couple of my friends listen to contemporary gospel music too, but I personally don?t understand the attraction to it.

Jennifer: Well, many of us who have faith in God find the lyrics to be very encouraging and uplifting, but I know several people who don?t believe, both men and women, who listen to this music just because of the peaceful lyrics and beautiful music.

Kevin: I guess there is a positive side to this type of music, but your taste in music is very different than mine. The culture Klatch

Mozart is still one of the best known composers in the world, though he lived over 200 years ago. Mozart was a child prodigy on piano. His father was a musician himself and took it upon himself to teach Mozart from a very young age. His father traveled with young Mozart around Europe to demonstrate his son?s amazing abilities to wealthy aristocrats, hoping that they might give him a position in their royal court some day. Mozart later did receive a music position at a royal court and quickly became world-famous while still in his 20s!

Mozart is well-known for his many pieces written for piano and symphony orchestra, but he is probably better known for the operas he wrote. Mozart was masterful at combining the string and wind instruments with the voices on stage. Many of his pieces are timeless and still enjoyed today.

Stephen Foster

Early American popular songs were strongly influenced by European tastes. It took many years for Americans to from their own style of popular music. The first uniquely American popular songs arose from something called minstrel shows beginning in the 1840s. Many songs still familiar in America today, such as “Oh Susanna” and “Dixie”, were originally composed to be performed on the minstrel stage. These songs were first performed in Northern states by white singers who painted their faces black. These “blackface” performers copied and exaggerated the styles of real African-American singers. After the Civil War, African-American performers were allowed to join the minstrel shows but had to imitate these white performers? exaggerated versions of their original songs.

The most popular composer in America during the later half of the 19th century was Stephen Foster. His music was written for both church and popular settings. Many of his songs were also performed in minstrel shows. One of his more well-known pieces was Oh Susanna written in 1854.

Another form of popular music that was developing at the same time as the music from the minstrel shows was the Negro Spiritual, or spiritual for short. The spiritual was a deeply emotional song written and performed by black slaves in early America. Slavery was legal in America until 1863 and slaves did not enjoy many freedoms under the law. Despite this, many slave owners allowed slaves to meet for Christian services even before slavery was ended. Rural slaves would stay after the regular worship services in churches or in plantation homes for singing and dancing. The lyrics of Negro Spirituals were tightly linked with the lives and sufferings

of slaves. Spirituals were inspired by the message of Jesus Christ and the stories in the Christian Bible. They were different from other American hymns or church songs because they shared the hard condition of being a slave with the listener.

The spiritual was very influential in the development of another popular form of music at the beginning of the 20th century, the blues. Muc h of what we hear in today?s pop, jazz and blues music was influenced by these older song forms from early America.

What's the story?

I flew to New York to visit my family for the Christmas holidays. My mother, father and brother along with his wife and two children all live there. Unfortunately, my father was out of the country and could not make it this year, but my sister-in-law?s parents were able to come. It?s always nice to visit with them and hear about what has been going on in their lives since we last met.

For Christmas Eve, my sister-in-law served a lovely dinner of roast and ham along with potatoes and green vegetables. Then we all went to church after the evening meal and sang songs about Christmas and the birth of Jesus. When we returned home, my brother and sister-in-law tried to put their two young children to bed but they were too excited about Christmas to go to sleep. It didn?t matter what they did, the children would not go to sleep and continued to disturb the adults who were trying to have a good conversation over coffee and dessert. At one time, the two children ran through the house screaming as loud as they could! Both my brother and sister-in-law were able to ignore their behavior, but the other guests and I could not. I learned that children can be both a great gift and sometimes a great problem.

IDIOMS:

1. Jason had no idea we were having a surprise party for him. We really pulled the wool over his eyes.

2. After studying hard last night, I just ran out of steam this morning.

3. After learning that two of her co-workers just lost their jobs, Lauren saw the handwriting on the wall.

4. My friend couldn?t believe that classes had been cancelled for the day. He?s a real doubting Thomas.

To pull the wool over someone’s eyes: to keep something from someone else by deceit or trickery

to run out of steam: to lose the energy or desire to finish a task

to see the handwriting on the wall: a reference to a story in the Bible. It means to be able to predict pending disaster or problems before they happen.

Doubting Thomas:a reference to one of Jesus? followers in the Bible. It refers to someone who does not believe in something until he sees it for himself.

Unit 9 Book your vacation now!

Listening task 1

Jason: This project I have been working on at my job has me frazzled! I really need a break.

Julie: You've been working too hard and I've been worried about you! Too many late nights at the office. Let's take a vacation. It sounds like you need one. Maybe we could go see my family?

Jason:I would like to see your family, but they live so far away. Once we fly all the way there I am so jetlagged that it is hard for me to spend quality time with them. It is also hard to relax with so many people around, especially with your young nieces running around all day.

Julie: That is a good point, and this vacation should be relaxing for you. I have always dreamed of going somewhere tropical. How about going to a tropical island and staying at an upscale resort?

Jason: I think that going to a tropical island for vacation is a great idea, but maybe we should try and save money and stay in an all-inclusive resort instead?

Julie: I have always wanted to stay at an all-inclusive resort. When you are on vacation, it is such a pain to try and find good place to eat. I would much rather go to a resort where all that?s taken care of.

Jason: Our neighbor Liz gave us the number of a good travel agent. Maybe she can help us find a good place. Julie:That sounds great. I think I have that travel agent?s number. I'll call her tomorrow at the crack of dawn. Listening task 2

Travel Agent: Thank you for calling Overseas Travel Agency. May I help you?

Julie: Yes, my husband and I are planning a vacation. We?d like to visit a luscious tropical island. Do you have any recommendations?

Travel Agent: Certainly. I would love to be of assistance. Off the top of my head, I would suggest the island of Bali this time of year.

Julie: why Bali?

Travel Agent: At this time of year it is raining cats and dogs in most tropical regions, but it is the dry season in Bali. Also, there are many excellent restaurants to choose from and most of the accommodations on the island are truly luxurious. Plus, if you are looking for fun in the water while you are there, Bali is known for its surfing, snorkeling and scuba diving. And I must say that the shopping is absolutely divine!

Julie: The sounds amazing! Jason loves to scuba dive and I love to shop and eat at gourmet restaurants. Bali sounds perfect for us. Can you tell me how much it will cost for the two of us? We would like to spend as little as possible, and would prefer to stay in an all-inclusive resort.

Travel Agent: It will take me a day or so to get accurate prices, but I will call you as soon as I do. At that time, assuming you are happy, we can book it. I want to assure you that I am a professional and I will work as hard as I possibly can to make sure that your trip is well planned and not too expensive.

Julie: thank you. When we book the resort, will we have to pay for it when we get there?

Travel Agent: I?ll need your credit card number to make a reservation, but you won?t actually have to pay for it until you get there.

Julie: that sounds great. I look forward to talking with you again tomorrow!

Working as a travel agent

After college I wanted to work in a job that I loved and where I could help people. I quickly discovered that I love to travel. I like reading and learning about exotic locales, and I enjoy meeting new people from different towns and even different countries. I decided to become a travel agent so I could help others experience the joy of traveling.

As a travel agent I work hard helping people plan their travel itineraries. I also make sure that I help my customers get the biggest bang for their buck. Because I help them save money and plan wonderful vacations, my customers return again and again.

Many of my customers want to go places where they have never been before. It is up to me to explain everything about the destination, which means that I have to constantly read about the locations that I recommend, so that I can provide a high level of service to them.

Planning a vacation can be stressful for my customers, so as their travel agent it is important that I am polite, conscientious, and patient with my customers at all times. But most importantly, I must always be respectful of their wishes. I love being a travel agent and could not imagine ever working at another job.

Bali, Indonesia is a beautiful island located 8 degree south of the equator. It is blessed with a tropical climate and has a daily average temperature of 30 degree Celsius. Bali has a wet season and a dry season, but it can, and does, rain at any time of the year. The best time to visit is in its dry season, which lasts from April to September. At 153 kilometers long and 112 kilometers wide, it is a fairly large island. In the middle is mount Agung, a still-active volcano which stretches 3148 kilometers into the sky and offers dramatic views to visitors. Three million people live on Bali, of which 90% are Hindu. Colonized by the Dutch centuries ago, it is now a part of Indonesia. The Balinese are known through the world for their kindness and gentleness.

Bali is known for the performing arts, and especially for dance, which is world famous and of the highest quality. However, the Balinese also produce high quality painting, sculpture, and woodcarving. In addition, many famous western artists have moved to Bali over the years and contribute greatly to its artistic community. Additionally, Bali is known for its surfing, which is one of the best in the world. Surfers from the United States and Australia flock to the surf spots every year to compete against themselves and challenge the waves.

What's the story?

While on vacation in Bali, my husband and i were sitting on the beach enjoying looking at the water. All of a sudden, we noticed people packing up and leaving. We couldn?t imagine why they were leaving the beach on such a beautiful day when suddenly clouds appeared on the horizon and soon it started raining like cats and dogs. We grabbed our towels, our umbrellas, and ran towards the hotel restaurant. We were soaking wet and couldn?t wait to take shelter in the restaurant.

However, it was too late. By the time we arrived there were no seats or tables available. The waitress came up to us and said that without a table we would have to leave the restaurant. We then went to the hotel lobby to look in the shops. Everything there was too expensive and the store owners told us we had to leave because we were getting the floor wet. We were cold and miserable and decided to go back to our room. We ended up spending the rest of the day watching television and sleeping.

On the whole, we had a great vacation in Bali. We enjoyed the beautiful beaches, the water sports ,and the adventures we had there. This ,however, was not one of the best days.

Idioms

To keep your chin up: to maintain a positive attitude and face the challenges before you. This idiom comes from boxing, and how the boxers must "keep their chin up" when they face their opponents.

To hold your horses: to relax and take a deep breath before acting irrationally. Horses are skittish and American cowboys have to physically hold their horses to stop them from running away and injuring

themselves.

Raining cats and dogs: raining very hard

To get up on the wrong side of the bed: to be in a bad mood, presumably because one did not sleep well the night before.

Unit 10 a shoulder to cry on

The culture Klatch

In western countries it is popular to send friends and family cards to celebrate a certain occasion such as a birthday, wedding, or holiday. These cards are called greeting cards. Sending greeting cards is a tradition that goes back about 200 years. The first known greeting cards were usually hand-delivered. When the world's first postage stamp was invented in 1840, it became popular to maid a card and the trend grew. As the trend grew, manufacturers began creating cheap greeting cards that anyone could buy.

It also became popular to send sympathy cards. People send sympathy cards to express their concern and care when a friend or family member is going through a difficult time. In America, people send about 122 million sympathy cards each year. Hallmark, a company that makes greeting cards, offers 300 different sympathy card designs. The cards are for many different situations such as the death of a friend/family member, the illness of a friend/family member, a military death, someone who was had surgery, and many more.

The most special greeting cards are the ones that express comfort and hope. A sympathy card is also made more special if it contains a personal letter to the person having a difficult time.

When someone you care about is having a difficult time because of the loss of a loved one, or the illness of someone, or any other event that has caused problems, it is important to show that person that you care. A sympathy card is a great way to help encourage a friend or family member who is struggling.

What's the story?

The Tortoise and the Hare

There once was a selfish and mean hare named Lester. He thought he was the best animal in all of the animal kingdom and was always teasing the other animals. He was very proud of how fast he could run and how high he could jump. In the animal kingdom there also lived a nice, friendly tortoise named Leo. All the animals liked Leo because he always had something good and kind to say and was always thinking of ways to help others. Leo, however, was very slow, and it took him a long time to do anything.

One day, Lester and Leo met on the road! Lester was arrogant, and he said to Leo, "you are so slow! I bet it takes you a whole day just to get to the other end of this road! I can get to the end of this road in just half an hour. Let's have a race and see who can get to the end of this road first!" before Leo could respond, Lester sped away. Leo continued to walk slowly down the road an his usual pace.

Soon Lester was far ahead of Leo and very close to the end the road. So he said to himself, "since Leo is so far behind, I'll just sit down here and take a nap. I'll be awake in plenty of time to beat Leo to the end." So Lester sat down and quickly fell asleep. Several hours passed and Lester continued to sleep. At last, he woke up and when he opened his eyes he saw that Leo was only a few feet from the end of the road. Lester jumped up and began bouncing to the end of the road, but Leo, even though he was slow, was too close to the end of the road

for Lester to catch up. Out of breath and angry, Lester moaned, "it wasn't a fair race! We should do it over again!" but Leo only responded, "slow and steady wins the race."

Unit 1 Listen1_Ex1 Interviewer:Angela, you were born in Korea but you've been living in Canada for a long time, haven't you? Angela:Yes, I was 10 years old when my parents immigrated to Canada and I've been living here for 20 years now. Interviewer:Do you think that belonging to two different cultures has affected your personality? Angela:Yes, definitely. There are times when I think that I have two personalities. Depending on where I am and who I'm with, I'm Korean or I'm Canadian. Interviewer:That sounds complicated. Could you explain what you mean? Angela:Well, growing up in Canada when I was going to high school, for example, I was known as Angela to the outside world, and as Sun-Kyung at home. I would wave hello to my teachers, but bow to my parents' Korean friends when they visited our home. Interviewer:Do different cultures have different ideas as to what is polite? Angela:Yes, definitely. In high school, I was expected to look straight in the eyes of my teachers and to talk openly with them. But when Koreans spoke to me, I was expected to look at my feet and to be shy and silent. Interviewer:Do you think that having two personalities makes you a richer person? I feel everyone should be able to feel or understand what others are going through. But when you hurt, cry, or are unhappy for people you don't know, or for a movie that is not real, then I think that's a little too sensitive. That's the way I am. I am a very independent person. I must do things for myself. I don't like people doing things for me, or helping me, or giving me things. It's not that I don't appreciate it, because I do. I just feel that when someone does something for you, you owe them, and if there is one thing I don't like to feel, it's that I owe anyone anything. I think I would be a good friend. I would do almost anything for someone I like, and would share or give anything I have. I'm very caring and understanding. People

大学英语自学教程(上册) unit 23 非言语交际

大学英语自学教程(上册) unit 23 非言语交际 23-A. Non-verbal Communication If anyone asked you what were the main means of communication between people, what would you say? That isn’t a catch question. The answer is simple and obvious. It would almost certainly refer to means of communication that involve the use of words. Speakers and listeners-oral communication, and writers and readers-written communication. And you’d be quite right. There is, however, another form of communication which we all use most of the time, usually without knowing it. This is sometimes called body language. Its more technical name is non-verbal communication. Non-verbal, because it does not involve the use of words. NVC for short. When someone is saying something with which he agrees, the average European will smile and nod approval. On the other hand, if you disagree with what they are saying, you may frown and shake your head. In this way you signal your reactions, and communicate them to the speaker without saying a word. I referred a moment ago to "the average European”, because body language is very much tied to culture, and in order not to misunderstand, or not to be misunderstood, you must realize this. A smiling Chinese, for instance, may not be approving but somewhat embarrassed. Quite a lot of work is now being done on the subject of NVC, which is obviously important, for instance, to managers, who have to deal every day with their staff, and have to understand what other people are feeling if they are to create good working conditions. Body language, or NVC signals, are sometimes categorized into five kinds: 1.body and facial gestures; 2.eye contact; 3.body contact or "proximity"; 4.clothing and physical appearance; and 5.the quality of speech. I expect you understood all those, except perhaps "proximity." This simply means "closeness". In some cultures-and I am sure this is a cultural feature and not an individual one-it is quite normal for people to stand close together, or to more or less thrust their face into yours when they are talking to you. In other cultures, this is disliked; Americans, for instance, talk about invasion of their space. Some signals are probably common to all of us. If a public speaker (like a professor, for example) is all the time fiddling with a pencil, or with his glasses, while he is talking to you, he is telling you quite clearly that he is nervous. A person who holds a hand over his mouth when he is talking is signaling that he is lacking in confidence. If you start wriggling in your chairs, looking secretly at your watches or yawning behind your hands, I shall soon get the message that I’m boring you. And so on. I'm sure you could make a whole list of such signals-and it might be fun if you did. All the signals I have mentioned so far can be controlled. If you are aware that you are doing these things, you can stop. You can even learn to give false signals. Most public speakers are in fact nervous, but a good speaker learns to hide this by giving off signals of confidence. Other kinds of NVC are not so easy to control. Eye contact, for instance. Unless you are confessing intense love, you hardly ever look into someone else’s eyes for very long. If you try it, you’ll find they will soon away, probably in embarrassment.

(S9) The bartender nervously hands the big man a beer, hands shaking. He takes the beer, bites the top of the bottle off, and downs the beer in one gulp. Don’t you hear Big John is coming?” Task3: A View of Happiness Script Dr. Smith has proposed a reasonable, if perhaps somewhat oversimplifies, view of happiness. According to his theory, happiness might be described as a state if balance. And when human or certain animals achieve that balance, they rend to remain in that condition in order to repeat the happy feeling. To illustrate this, we may study two magnets. When their positive and negative poles meet, they are comfortably joined, and they remain there. In other words, they have attained a balance or state of happiness. If on the other hand, one of the poles is reversed, and positive pole is presses against positive pole, there is resistance, instability, imbalance a state of unhappiness. Animals with some degree of intelligence seem to find happiness in reinforcement. Once they have gained one or more of their goals such as food, and water, they learn to repeat the actions that led to satisfaction of those goals. This repetition or reinforcement produces a state of balance or sense of happiness. According to this theory, only animals with a

How to be a successful language learner? ―Learning a language is easy, even a child can do it!‖ Most adults who are learning a second language would disagree with this statement. For them, learning a language is a very difficult task. They need hundreds of hours of study and practice, and even this will not guarantee success for every adult language learner. Language learning is different from other kinds of learning. Some people who are very intelligent and successful in their fields find it difficult to succeed in language learning. Conversely, some people who are successful language learners find it difficult to succeed in other fields. Language teachers often offer advice to language learners: “Read as much as you can in the new language.”“ Practice speaking the language every day. ”“Live with people who speak the language.”“Don‘t translate-try to think in the new language.”“ Learn as a child would learn; play with the language.” But what does a successful language learner do? Language learning research shows that successful language learners are similar in many ways.

Unit 1 The Perfect Swarm Narrator: Damage from swarms of locusts can reach disastrous proportions. A single swarm of desert locusts can consume over 70,000 metric tons of vegetation a day. There is, however, one continent that’s locust-free: North America. 旁白:蝗虫群的伤害可以达到灾难性的程度。一个单一的沙漠蝗虫可以消耗超过70000吨的植被一天。然而,有一个大陆是蝗虫自由:美国北部。 Interestingly enough, this wasn’t always true. For hundreds of years, the Rocky Mountain locust was a common pest in the American West. Back in the mid-1800s, thousands of pioneers journeyed across the U.S. in search of free land and new opportunities. They settled on the frontier of the western states, and began to farm the land intensively, growing corn and other crops. Then, in 1875, out of nowhere, a rare combination of air currents, drought, and basic biology produced the right conditions for an unthinkable event, the worst storm ever recorded, the “perfect swarm.” It cam e over the horizon like a strange, dark cloud. Not millions, not billions, but trillions of insects, sweeping through the land like a living tornado. Those who saw the incredible event and survived never forgot what they witnessed. The swarm came together over the state of Texas, and soon moved quickly across the frontier in a huge destructive cloud that was nearly 3,000 kilometers long. The storm spread north towards North Dakota. The locusts eventually went as far west as the Rocky Mountains, leaving a path of devastation and destruction wherever they went. 群聚在德克萨斯州的上空,并很快在一个巨大的破坏性的云,是近3000公里长的边界迅速移动。风暴向北到了北。蝗虫最终在落基山脉的西部,离开了一条破坏性的道路和毁灭的道路。 An account from one person who observed the swarm described the locust storm. The locusts came down from the sky like hail. Frightened people ran screaming into their homes as the locusts’ claws dug into thei r skin and hung upon their clothing. They heard sharp cracks as the insects came underfoot. The large locusts were everywhere, looking with hungry eyes turning this way and that. Their bodies blocked the sun, bringing darkness along with the destruction. Crop damages were absolutely astonishing. If such destruction were to happen today it would cost an estimated US$116 billion, more than the most costly hurricane in American history. And then, something remarkable happened: the Rocky Mountain locust simply vanished. 农作物的损害是绝对惊人的。如果这样的破坏将发生在今天,它将花费大约116美元,超过
