Susie has become our hero by saving our lives from an imminent (即将来临的) traffic accident.

Every Christmas, we visit my parents who live nearly 400 miles away from us. It is always a tiring 9-to-10-hour drive, but we always try to make it because that's the only time my parents get to see their grandchildren.

One year, I was the driver, my wife Adriana was in the passenger seat; my three kids were all piled in the back seat. We tried forcing our dog Susie into her carrier, but she strongly refused to be placed there, so the kids decided to put her by their feet. That year, we traveled at night to avoid the heavy holiday traffic.

The first three hours were fine. My three kids were all fast asleep in the back seat, including Susie who was lying on their lap (大腿). My wife accompanied (陪伴) me and kept me up through that first few hours of driving. But by around 1:00 am, she fell asleep too. I was also very sleepy by that time, so I stopped at a small store and tried to wake myself up with a cup of coffee which helped for several miles. But soon the boring driving beat it soon.

1 had fallen asleep at the wheel when Susie roughly woke me up by jumping onto my lap. When I opened my eyes, I saw the glaring (闪耀的) headlights of the truck heading towards our car.

I quickly drove the car back to our lane (路). I had narrowly missed hitting the truck.

I checked everyone to see if they were OK, and they were all still fast asleep. I drove the rest

of the distance very awake. Thanks for Susie.

Last weekend, my kids along with few other kids from the neighborhood volunteered to help me wash my car. My 10-year-old daughter came up with the idea of 1 other people's cars as well. It was pretty 2 outside and I had no plans to 3 being in the bright sun. She 4 wanted to give lemonade (柠檬汽水) to passers-by for free. I had seen little kids 5 and sell fresh lemonade for a small cost but not free. Although I felt 6 , I decided to help her. 7 she asked me, "What if we 8 this a smile car wash?" I couldn't hold back my tears and 9 her and the other kids to go outside the house and come up with 10 ideas.

While I kept myself busy drying the car, the kids walked up to me with a(n) 11 with beautiful images of smiles. They had "Free Car Wash" written on it and the 12 of their exercise was "smile". It was pretty neat to see a team of kids ranging 5-11 years with the 13 to do something for others.

All that seemed 14 and came right from their heart. Nothing seemed to 15 to them: their playtime, the heat outside -- they just wanted to 16 others and do something nice in the community!

I helped them make some fresh lemonade and brought out some additional 17 to help clean cars. Passers-by were 18 and one even shouted back to them saying "God Bless Y ou, my kids..." One of them even tried giving them 5 dollars, which they refused. A pretty heartwarming 19 !

Mickey was a nice, cheerful, optimistic boy. No one could remember ever having seen him angry; he didn't mind whatever people said to him. Even his teachers admired his good character, which was so unusual that a rumor (谣言) was going round that Mickey's goodness must be due to

some special secret. They questioned Mickey so much that, one afternoon, he invited his favorite teacher, Mr. Anthony, to tea. When they had finished, Mickey showed Mr. Anthony around the house. When Mickey opened his bedroom door, the teacher froze, and a big smile spread across his face. The wall was a unique collage (拼贴画) of thousands of colors and shapes! It was the loveliest decoration Mr. Anthony had ever seen.

"Some people at school think I never think badly of anyone," Mickey started to explain, "and that nothing at all bothers me, and that I never want to insult (冒犯) anyone, but that's not true at all. I'm just like anyone else. I used to get angrier than all the other kids. But years ago, with the help of my parents, I started a small collage. I could use any kind of material and color for it. With every little piece I stuck on I added some bad thought or act."

It was true. The teacher looked closely at the wall. In each one of the small pieces he could read, in tiny letters, "fool", "idiot", "pain", "bore", and a thousand other negative (消极的) things.

"This is how I started turning all my bad times into an opportunity to add to my collage. Now I like the collage so much that, each time someone makes me angry, I couldn't be happier. They've given me a new piece for my work of art."

Without telling anyone, on that very day, Mr. Anthony began his own collage. He would introduce it so often to his students that, years later, they called that neighborhood "Art Town". Each house contained its own wonderful works of art, made by those cheerful and optimistic children.

Football is popular in the world. But football is a violent sport. Injuries in football are very common and often serious enough to require a trip to the emergency room. To learn how to keep things as safe as possible on the football field, follow these tips.

Gear (用具) Guidelines

Y ou'll need a lot of protective gear to play football. 1 If you show up for a practice or game without a necessary piece of equipment, tell your coach, and don't try to play until you fix the situation.

Before Kickoff

2 Ideally (理想地), you should eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise year-round, but if you can't, be sure to start preparing for the football season by working out and eating right during the summer. This will help you be a better player and help prevent injuries.

During Games and Practices

3 The point of the game is to hit opposing (对立的) players, but ifyou don't do it in a legal manner, you will cost your team on the field and greatly increase your risk of injury.

If you have any pain or discomfort, take yourself out of the game. 4 It only worsens the injury and keeps you out of action longer. Don't start playing again until the pain goes away or you get cleared to play by a doctor.

A Few Other Reminders

Make sure there is first aid available (可用的) at the fields where you play and practice, as well as someone who knows how to carry it out. 5 Have a plan for emergency situations, and be sure there is someone available to take injured players to the emergency room or get in touch with medical personnel to quickly treat serious injuries.

B. Never try to play through pain.

C. Have a pre-season physical exam.

D. Know and obey the rules of football.

高一英语阅读理解题20套(带答案) 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Even a small increase in light activity such as washing dishes, or walking around the house might help prevent an early death among older adults, researchers say. "It is important for elderly people, who might not be able to do much moderate intensity(强度)activity, that just moving around and doing light intensity activity will have strong effects and is beneficial," said Ulf Ekelund, who led the research. Published in the BMJ, the latest research was based on a review of eight studies involving a total of more than 36,000 people with an average age of almost 63 years. Participants were followed for five to six years; 2,149 deaths were recorded. All of the studies involved monitoring the physical activity of individuals who had activity trackers, and the studies did not rely on self-reporting, which, the experts noted, could be unreliable. For each study participants were split into four equal-sized groups, based on the total amount of time spent actively, and the risk of death assessed, taking into account factors such as age, sex, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. This was then repeated for an amount of activity at different levels of intensity. The results were analyzed together to give an overview. The team found a greater amount of activity was linked to a lower risk of death. The results held for different intensities of activity. The team said the study supported the message "sit less and move more and more often". However, the study had limitations. It only looked at the situation for middle age and older adults, most of whom lived in the US or Europe, and some of the effect could be due to those people with a higher risk of death being less likely to be related to physical activity. Physical activity levels also were only measured over one period of time. Dr Gavin Sandercock, from the University of Essex, said the results suggested moving more brought bigger benefits than simply reducing the time of sitting, another factor measured in the study. "This study reinforces the important message that getting the least active people to do even just a little bit more physical activity can have important public health benefits," he said. (1)Which of the following may Ulf Ekelund suggest elderly people do? A.lying on the sofa reading. B.Doing a little gentle gardening. C.Going out to hike with friends. D.Playing basketball sometimes. (2)What can we know about the research? A.It lasted about 8 years. B.The researchers admitted they used fake data. C.The participants didn't include younger people. D.Some participants died because of doing too much physical activity (3)What is the author's attitude towards the researchers' conclusion? A.Doubtful

As he observed her and spoke with her, he admired her more and more. He showered her with kindness and words of praise until she consented to be his wife. Not long after they were married, however, the beautiful woman found out that she was more the object of his artistic interest than of his affections. When he admired her classic beauty, it was as though he were standing in front of a work of art rather than in front of a human being to whom he had pledged his love and promised his life. And soon he expressed his great desire to put her rare beauty on canvas. “Please sit for me in the workroom,” he pleaded, “and I will make your beauty permanent. The work will be my masterpiece!” She was humble and patient as well as flattered by his words, so she said, “Yes, my love. I will be happy to sit for you.” So the beautiful, young wife of the art ist sat meekly for hours in his studio, not complaining. Day after day she sat patiently, smiling as she posed, because she loved him and because she hoped that he would see her love in her smile and obedience. At length, as the labor drew to close, the painter became wilder in his passion for his work. He only rarely turned his eyes from the canvas to look at his wife. 新闻报道类 (I)★★★ MONTREAL (Reuters) – Crossing the US-Canada border(边界)to go to church on a Sunday (安全)rules. cost a US citizen $10,000 for breaking Washington’s strict new security The expensive trip to church was a surprise for Richard Albert, who lives right on the Canadian border. Like the other half-dozen people of Township 15, crossing the border is a daily occurrence for Albert. The nearby Quebec village of St. Pamphile is where they shop, eat and go to church. There are many such situations in these areas along the largely unguarded 5,530-mile border between Canada and the US-which in some cases actually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings. As a result, Albert says he did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returned home to the US after attending church in Canada, as usual. The US customs(海关)station in this are is closed on Sundays, so be just drove around the locked gate, as he had done every weekend since the gate appeared last May, following a tightening of border security. Two days later. Albert was told to go to the customs office, where an officer told him he had been caught on camera crossing the border illegally(非法). Ottawa has given out special passes to some 300 US citizens in that area so they can enter the country when Canadian customs stations are closed, but the US stopped a similar program last May. That forces the people to a 200-mile detour along hilly roads to get home through another border checkpoint. Albert has requested that the customs office change their decisions on the fine, but he has not attended a Sunday church since. “I feel like I’m living in a prison,” he said. 1.We learn from the text that Richard Albert is . 高一英语阅读理解专项训练及答案及解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Last week, Vodafone started a test of the UK's first full 5G service, available for use by businesses in Salford. It is part of its plan to trial the technology in seven UK cities. But what can we expect from the next generation of mobile technology? One thing we will see in the preparation for the test is lots of tricks with the new tech. Earlier this year, operators paid almost £ 1.4 billion for the 5G wavelengths, and to compensate for that cash, they will need to catch the eye of consumers. In September, Vodafone used its bit of the range to display the UK's first hologram (全息) call. The Manchester City captain Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram in Newbury. It isn't all holograms, however: 5G will offer faster internet access, with Ofcom (英国通讯管理局) suggesting that video that takes a minute to download on 4G will be available in just a second. The wider application is to support connected equipment on the "internet of things" -not just the internet-enabled fridge that can reorder your milk for you, but the network that will enable driverless cars and delivery drones (无人机) to communicate with each other. Prof William Webb has warned that the technology could be a case of the emperor's new clothes. Much of the speed increase, he claims, could have been achieved by putting more money in the 4G network, rather than a new technology. Other different voices have suggested that a focus on rolling out wider rural broadband access and addressing current network coverage would be more beneficial to the UK as a whole. Obviously, 5G will also bring a cost to consumers. It requires a handset for both 5G and 4G, and the first 5G-enabled smart phones are expected in the coming year. With the slow pace of network rollout so far, it is likely that consumers will end up upgrading to a new 5 G phone well before 5 G becomes widely available in the next couple of years. (1)Why does Prof William Webb say "the technology could be a case of the emperor's new clothes"? A. He is in favor of the application of the new technology.
