Keeping Mum is aBritish film. It told about a fun but a little bitter story. A young lady killed her husband and his lover. She was condemned to lifelong sentence. 43 years later she was set free and became her daughter’s home in which exist a lot of conflicts and treating and lies. Though the old lady killed like old days, she finally brought true happiness to the family.

The main character was Walter Goodfellow. Just like his name, he was a good fellow who put his job above family. His wife, having been feeling ignored an d upset by neighbor’s dog, fell in love with her golf coach Lance. His daughter Holly changed boyfriends frequently and had sex with them. His son Petey was bullied by bad lads. Everything in this family seems like a mass. The old lady Grace, a former murd erer, killed impolite neighbor’s dog and the neighbor himself, then the golf coach who was also avoyeur. But on the other hand, Grace taught Walter to be more humorous so that the presentation won’t be so boring. Grace reminded Walter to consider his wife. She played a trick on the school bullies so that Petey can be confident. Grace also give a lesson to Gloria and Holly about love. Thought the way---killing people, perhaps bad people---is illegal, but truly the family has transformed into a really happy family.

No one is given the right to deprive others’ lives. So is Grace. Is Grace a good person? Rational people may consider that Grace is killing too much and need to be justified. But emotional people may say she killed bad guys just to protect her daughter and her daughter’s daughter. We can say, she is kind in her mind but she suffered mental disease. Grace killed his disloyal husband but ruined her life, but on the other side, she just saved her daughter’s family. So she was a killer but a respectable mother.

Walter was a reverend and he was an important person in the small town. As we can see in many western countries’ film, many communities have their own church. Each church has an reverend. Reverend is a religious leader but in many cases he solves many problems like

Mrs.Parker’scommittee. No doubt reverend is an important person in many communities.

Gloria thought Irish are evil. English people may have prejudice against Irish. Let me tell you some jokes about English and Irish. An Irish man called to an travel agency, “how long it may take to arrive London?” The clerk answered “wait a minute (and let me check about it)””Thanks.” The Irish hang off. Irish think of problem in quite different way compared with English and other countries in Britain.

Bible is the most important book in western world, in other words, Christian world. Bible has a chapter about sex. It inspired Walter to have passion on his wife, a“utter bitch” in Holly’s view. Bible refer to sex and it inspired Walter. If the chapter is not in the Bible, will it be efficient enough to inspire Walter? It’s hard to say. In this part, the film molds Walter a man who completely devoted himself to God. Hopefully he finally changed.
