She Walked Through Fire

On Thanksgiving weekend, the Heffelmire family gathered for a meal at their home. After dinner, the family went down to the finished basement to relax except Charlotte’s father, Eric, who was in the garage to fix his truck.

Around 8 pm, Charlotte decided to check on her dad. She walked through the kitchen. When she opened the side door to the garage, black smoke rose up into the kitchen. She could barely make out her father lying on his back, trapped under the truck. He’d removed the front passenger-side tyre and raised the truck on a jack(千斤顶). The truck had slipped off the jack, and now the whole weight of the wheel was on his chest and shoulders.

Charlotte ran to the front of the truck and struggled to lift it. Eric was still conscious, and he yelled, “You got it! One

more try!” Sh e tried again and was able to tip the truck backward just enough for her to pull her dad by the shirt with both hands from under the truck.

She dragged him across the garage and 20 feet down the driveway. Then she ran back to the garage, which had burst i nto flames. “I was afraid the car was going to explode,” says Charlotte, so she climbed into the truck, which faced forward, turned the key, and pressed the gas pedal(油门). The car slowly rolled out, the metal wheel scratching loudly against the concrete.

Safely on the driveway, Charlotte stopped the truck and ran back to the basement. “There’s a fire! Everybody get out!” she yelled as she picked up her three-month-old niece and ran out. Outside, she handed the baby to her mom, and then ran around to the burning garage. She picked up a garden hose(水管) and sprayed the fire while calling 911.

A few minutes later, firefighters and an ambulance arrived. Charlotte was treated for second-degree burns on both her feet and face. Her dad had injuries on his chest and shoulders, as well as minor burns on his face. The garage and the house were damaged but the family survived.

The Heffelmires are staying in an apartment while their house is rebuilt. “Charlotte is a remarkable kid,” says her dad. Charlotte, however, simply says, “I was saving my family and my house. I wasn’t going to let my dad die.”

Robot Surgeon(外科医生) Succeeds without Help from Human Doctors Humans make mistakes. Even surgeons with years of experience are not infallible. But what if these doctors could pool their knowledge and experience together and create a surgical standard of care, to be carried out by machines?

That’s the idea behind surgical robots, which may soon perform most surgeries, from sewing up tiny wounds to performing heart procedures. Many of these operations are, in fact, already completed with the assistance of robots. But a recent test suggests that robots in the operating room may soon go a step further, performing on soft tissue completely on their own, from start to finish.

The Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot(STAR), successfully completed surgeries on pigs. “We’re the first group to develop autonomous robotic surgery with soft-tissue su rgery, and when compared to standard operation, it’s better,” says Peter Kim, professor of surgery. “The idea is not to replace surgeons; it will make the surgeons better and make the procedures safer.”

A recent Mayo Clinic study found that major surgical errors—including operating on the wrong site or side of the body, or even leaving tools or objects inside the patient—occur every one out of 22,000 procedures. That’s rare, but robots like STAR would aim to lower the number even further.

In the da Vinci surgical system, surgeons place their arms inside instruments and use their hands to control the movement of robotic tools on the operating table from afar. The robot’s e very major move is controlled by surgeons, and thus its results may vary based on the surgeon’s training or experience.

STAR, on the other hand, is entirely autonomous. It’s not only able to work on its own and perform surgeries with a more flexible “hand”, but it’s able to react to the unexpected incidents. Cutting into hard tissue like bones is one thing, but

operating on moving soft tissue is far more complex. STAR reacts to a changing environment, similar to how self-driving cars are programmed to not only drive on the highway, but also react to another driver making a mistake and getting in your way.

63. The underlined word “infallible” in Paragraph 1 probably means _____.

A. always right

B. really creative

C. rather responsible

D. quite smart

64. We can learn from the passage that STAR _____.

A. has been widely used in the operating room

B. can perform the operation on its own

C. can make surgeries much faster

D. will take the place of surgeons

65. In the da Vinci surgical system, _____.

A. robots are trained from afar

B. surgery results depend on surgeons

C. robots always make mistakes

D. surgeons have trouble controlling robots

66. In the last paragraph, the author mentions self-driving cars in order to show _____.

A. how bad getting in another driver’s way might be

B. how difficult self-driving on the highway is

C. how smart an autonomous robot can be

D. how dangerous operating on people is

D

For several years, the art trade in London has known about the possible existence of the “treasure of the western cave”, dating from the 6th century BC. It was said to have been discovered “by farmers” in western Iran around 1992. Out of between 200 and 600 pieces, only a few have s o far “surfaced”. The Iranians were very angry that they managed to seize only part of the collection and that the rest was taken abroad illegally. But now they may worry less. An academic paper has just produced convincing evidence that at least one piece is a fake (赝品).

Fakes always exist in the world of antiquities(古物), but what is astonishing is how widespread they are now. A report from the Archaeological Institute of America concludes that no less than 80 per cent of all “ancient” west African pieces on the market are fake. How can this “forgery(伪造) culture” boom? It is found that about 80 per cent of the antiquities traded have no clear source. In other words, it is not known where they were found and therefore, even if they are real, they can tell us little about ancient history.

People in the trade say that the majority of these objects were found in “casual discoveries”. Shamefully, they know that this is not true. They advance the fiction because it suits their commercial purposes. The reality is that the objects come from robbery, not by local farmers “happening” on a few finds. The “treasure of the western cave” is a classic example of how faking works.

Faking is big business, and is of such a standard that even the greatest scholars may be fooled some of the time. The antiquities trade likes to play down not only the extent of robbery and faking, but also the overlap between the two. These latest reports let the cat out of the bag. But it is the overlap with robbed antiquities that is the most significant factor, which leads to the culture of forgery.

Collectors of antiquities need to be aware that they not only aid the robbery of potentially invaluable sites, but put themselves at the mercy of fakers as well….

67. What do we probably know abo ut the “treasure of the western cave”?

A. It’s slightly broken.

B. It’s totally real.

C. It’s partly fake.

D. It’s fairly new.

68. What astonishes the author?

A. The huge number of fakes.

B. The long history of fakes.

C. The influence of fakes.

D. The origin of fakes.

69. According to the passage, “forgery culture” mainly results from _____.

A. a belief in “casual discoveries”

B. high faking standards

C. antiquities without a clear source

D. close combination of robbery and faking

70. Which is probably the last sentence of the passage?

A. This is the main source for robbery.

B. What shall be done to stop this trend?

C. Are collectors of antiquities aware of it?

D. They are being not just dishonest, but foolish.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)

Social Phobia

It’s natural to feel nervous, or shy in front of others at times. Most people manage to get through these moments when they need to. 71 It’s probably more than shyness. It may build up into a powerful fear. As a result, people feel uncomfortable participating in everyday social activities. This is called social phobia (also called social anxiety).

72 It prevents them from chatting with friends in the lunchroom, joining an after-school club, or going to a party. Sometimes, they even feel too nervous to ask a question in class or go to a teacher for help. Social phobia not only prevents people from trying new things. It also prevents them from making the normal, everyday mistakes that help people improve their skills still further.

It is really sad, isn’t it? But the good news is that people with social phobia can learn to manage fear, develop confidence and communicating skills and stop avoiding things that make them nervous. Of course it’s not always easy. Dealing with social phobia takes patience, courage to face fears and the willingness to practice. 73 Therapists (治疗师) can help people create a plan for facing social fears and build the skills and confidence to overcome it. And family or friends are especially important for them. 74 Friends and family can encourage them to pick a small goal to aim for, remind them to go for it, and be there when they might feel discouraged. Good friends and family are there to celebrate each small success along the way.

Little by little, someone who decides to deal with extreme shyness can learn to be more comfortable. 75 As shyness and fears begin to melt, confidence and positive feelings build. Pretty soon, the person is thinking less about what might feel uncomfortable and more about what might be fun.

A. Friends can overcome their fears.

B. But for some, the anxiety can be extreme.

C. They are not able to make eye contact with classmates.

D. Social phobia makes people lonely or disappointed over missed opportunities.

E. It also takes a commitment to go forward rather than back away when feeling shy.

F. Each small step forward helps build enough confidence to take the next small step.

G. The support from those key people helps them gather the courage to try something new.

三、Possible versions:

Dear Jim,

I am glad to tell you something about the Chinese naming practice.

Unlike your tradition, the family name in China is put first, followed by the given name. The given name usually contains one or two Chinese characters. Chinese people often name a baby with their best wishes in mind, like wishes for

good health, bright future and happiness. Some names imply the birth time, birth place, weather or even a natural phenomenon at the time of the baby’s birth. In terms of choosing the characters, parents still need to consider how they sound when combined into a name. They definitely wouldn’t want their child to be teased or given a bad nickname because of the pronunciation.

As for your Chinese name, how about “吉祥(Ji Xiang)”?The first character has a similar pronunciation to your name Jim, and both of the characters mean “good luck”. You can imagine it: whenever someone calls you “Ji Xiang”,it’s like he or she is wishing you good luck. I hope you’ll love this Chinese name.

Yours,

Li Hua

四、One possible version:

Last week, I successfully passed the Physical Fitness Test.

During a PE class one month ago, our teacher informed us that we would take the test on April 12th. Upon hearing the news, I felt my heart sink, wondering how rough the way ahead would be. However, I had to face it. Every day after school, I went to the playground and practiced the 1000-meter run, which was always a nightmare for me. Each time when my legs almost gave out and an inner voice lured me to give up, my teachers and classmates were always around me, comforting me and encouraging me. Their positive words and running figures pushed me forward.

Then finally came the test day. As the starting gun sounded for the race to begin, I called upon all my body’s strength and speed. I ran with purpose. After enduring the long run, I approached the finish line. Quickening my steps, I was confident and hopeful. The moment I rounded the last turn, I knew I had made it. After crossing the finish line, I was so overjoyed to see my cheering classmates. I received their celebratory high-fives proudly and tears of happiness streamed down my cheeks, as my teacher shook my hand.

From this experience, I have learned that I should face my fears bravely and appreciate those who are always willing to help me, making me a better person.
