As a volunteer teacher, I traveled a long way to a small village school in Longzhou, Guangxi. On my way there, I thought about the village, the school and the children there. However, my heart sank when I arrived there. It was out of what I had expected(预料). It didn't look like a school at all! The school had only three rooms, one for Grade 1, 2 and one for Grade 4, 5 and 6. There was a third one for me.

The children welcomed me warmly(热情地) on my first day. They asked me a lot of questions, and I told them stories about myself and my life in Shanghai. The next day, I gave them a test to find out their lever(水平). To my surprise, though the test was very easy, over half of the students failed it, yet they all wanted to learn new things. I know they need me.

I was busy preparing lessons and checking homework every night. I enjoyed teaching these lovely and hard-working children, and I could see that they were making progress with

my help. I have also learned a lot form them. I understand their lives better, and we are now good friends.

In every school there are some “bad kids”. They break school rules and some may even harm others. How did they become like this? The Beijing Municipal Communist Youth League released a report on these teenagers based on a survey of over 700 juvenile criminal suspects (青少年犯罪嫌疑人).

A “bad kid” is not born bad. They always start with minor bad acts and then fall into worse acts step by step. The first bad behavior is mostly smoking and drinking alcohol (37%), followed by bullying or fighting with others (29.6%), and then skipping school and staying out all night (14.8%).

The changing of a “good kid” into a “bad kid” usually happens along with puberty (青春

期). Teenagers perform their first bad act on average at the age of 12.25 and drop out of school at 15, according to the report. Thus junior high school is the key period. Schools should pay close attention to students’ behavior as well as their mental state, said the report.

However, most schools don’t have the personnel (人力) to do that. Traditional psychology (心理) teachers can hardly meet the need. School social workers may be a better choice, reported China Youth Daily. The workers are well trained and can help students through different ways such as holding psychological course, paying home visits and organizing group activities.

However, since the school social worker system was introduced in 2006, it is still limited to a few schools in big cities like Beijing and Guangzhou. The system should be popularized (普及) to all schools as soon as possible.

World expositions have a history of over 150 years.

They are often called the Olympic Games of economy,
