were sitting behind me. They were talking loudly. I got very angry. I could 4
not hear the actors. I turned round. I looked at the man and the woman 5
angrily. They did not pay any attention. In the end, I could not bear it. 6
I turned round again. 'I can't hear a word!' I said angrily. ' It's 7
none of your business,' the young man said rudely. 'This is a private 8

I had an amusing experience last year. After I had left a small 140
village in the south of France, I drove on to the next town. On the way, 141
a young man waved to me. I stopped and he asked me for a lift. As soon 142
as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he 143
replied in the same language. Apart from a few words, I do not know any 144
French at all. Neither of us spoke during the journey. I had nearly reached 145
the town, when the young man suddenly said, very slowly, 'Do you speak 146
English?' As I soon learnt, he was English himself!
