Lesson 1 A private conversation 私人谈话

Last week I went to the theatre. I had a very good seat. The play 2

was very interesting. I did not enjoy it. A young man and a young woman 3

were sitting behind me. They were talking loudly. I got very angry. I could 4

not hear the actors. I turned round. I looked at the man and the woman 5

angrily. They did not pay any attention. In the end, I could not bear it. 6

I turned round again. 'I can't hear a word!' I said angrily. ' It's 7

none of your business,' the young man said rudely. 'This is a private 8

conversation!'.

Lesson 2 Breakfast or lunch? 早餐还是午餐?

It was Sunday. I never get up early on Sundays. I sometimes stay 12

in bed until lunch time.

Last Sunday I got up very late. I looked out of the window. It was dark 14

outside.

'What a day!' I thought. 'It's raining again.' Just then, the telephone 16

rang. It was my aunt Lucy.' I've just arrived by train,' she said. 'I'm 17

coming to see you.' 'But I'm still having breakfast,' I said.

'What are you doing ?' she asked. ' I'm having breakfast,' I repeated.

'Dear me,' she said. 'Do you always get up so late ? It's one o'clock!

Postcards always spoil my holidays. Last summer, I went to Italy.

I visited museums and sat in public gardens. A friendly waiter taught me

a few words of Italian. 'Then he lent me a book. I read a few lines,

but I did not understand a word. Every day I thought about postcards. My 26

holidays passed quickly, but I did not send any cards to my friends. On 27

the last day I made a big decision. I got up early and bought thirty-seven 28

cards. I spent the whole day in my room, but I did not write a single card !

Lesson 4 An exciting trip 激动人心的旅行

I have just received a letter from my brother, Tim. He is in

Australia. He has been there for six months. Tim is an engineer. He is 33

working for a big firm and he has already visited a great number of 34

different places in Australia. He has just bought an Australian car and 35

has gone to Alice Springs, a small town in the centre of Australia. He 36

will soon visit Darwin. From there, he will fly to Perth.

My brother has never been abroad before, so he is finding this trip 38

very exciting.

Lesson 5 No wrong numbers 无错号之虞

Mr James Scott has a garage in Silbury and now he has just bought 42

another garage in Pinhurst. Pinhurst is only five miles from Silbury, but 43

Mr Scott cannot get a telephone for his new garage, so he has just bought 44

twelve pigeons. Yesterday, a pigeon carried the first message from 45

Pinhurst to Silbury. The bird covered the distance in three minutes. Up 46

to now, Mr Scott has sent a great many requests for spare parts and other 47

urgent messages from one garage to the other. In this way, he has begun 48

his own private telephone service.

Lesson 6 Percy Buttons 珀西·巴顿斯

I have just moved to a house in Bridge Street. Yesterday a beggar knocked

at my door. He asked me for a meal and a glass of beer. In return for this, 53

the beggar stood on his head and sang songs. I gave him a meal. He ate 54

the food and drank the beer. Then he put a piece of cheese in his pocket 55

and went away. Later a neighbour told me about him. Everybody knows him.

His name is Percy Buttons. He calls at every house in the street once a 57

month and always asks for a meal and a glass of beer.

Lesson 7 Too late 为时太晚

The plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport all morning.

They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamond from South Africa. A few 62

hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal 63

the diamonds. When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting 64

inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. Two 65

men took the parcel off the plane and carried it into the Customs House.

While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others 67

opened the parcel. To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of 68

stones and sand!

Lesson 8 The best and the worst 最好的和最差的

Joe Sanders has the most beautiful garden in our town. Nearly everybody 72

enters for 'The Nicest Garden Competition' each year, but Joe wins every 73

time. Bill Frith's garden is larger than Joe's. Bill works harder than 74

Joe and grows more flowers and vegetables, but Joe's garden is more 75

interesting. He has made neat paths and has built a wooden bridge over

a pool. I like gardens too, but I do not like hard work. Every year I enter

for the garden competition too, and I always win a little prize for the 78

worst garden in the town!

Lesson 9 A cold welcome 冷遇

On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall. It was the last day of 82

the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock.

It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time. Fifteen minutes passed 84

and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did 85

not move. We waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly someone 86

shouted, 'It's two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!' I looked 87

at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the New Year.

At that moment everybody began to laugh and sing.

We have an old musical instrument. It is called a clavichord(翼琴). It 92

was made in Germany in 1681. Our clavichord is kept in the living-room.

It has belong to our family for a long time. The instrument was bought 94

by my grandfather many years ago. Recently it was damaged by a visitor.

She tried to play jazz on it! She struck the keys too hard and two of the 96

strings were broken. My father was shocked. Now we are not allowed to touch 97

it. It is being repaired by a friend of my father's.

I was having dinner at a restaurant when Harry Steele came in. Harry 101

worked in a lawyer's office years ago, but he is now working at a bank. 102

He gets a good salary, but he always borrows money from his friends and 103

never pays it back. Harry saw me and came and sat at the same table. He 104

has never borrowed money from me. While he was eating, I asked him to lend 105

me &2. To my surprise, he gave me the money immediately. 'I have never 106

borrowed any money from you,' Harry said, 'so now you can pay for my 107

dinner!'

Our ncighbour, Captain Charles Alison, will sail from Portsmouth 114

tomorrow. We shall meet him at the harbour early in the morning. He will 115

be in his small boat, Topsail.Tapsail is a famous little boat. It has 116

sailed across the Atlantic many times. Captain Alison will set out at eight 117

o'clock so we shall have plenty of time. We shall see his boat and then 118

we shall say good-bye to him. He will be away for two months. We are very 119

proud of him. He will take part in an important race across the Atlantic. 120

The Greenwood Boys are a group of popular singers. At present, they are 126

visiting all parts of the country. They will be arriving here tomorrow. 127

They will be coming by train and most of the young

people in the town will be meeting them at the station. Tomorrow evening 130

they will be singing at the Workers' Club. The Greenwood Boys will be 131

staying for five days. During this time, they will give five performances. 132

As usual, the police will have a difficult time. They will be trying to 133

keep order. It is always the same on these occasions.

I had an amusing experience last year. After I had left a small 140

village in the south of France, I drove on to the next town. On the way, 141

a young man waved to me. I stopped and he asked me for a lift. As soon 142

as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he 143

replied in the same language. Apart from a few words, I do not know any 144

French at all. Neither of us spoke during the journey. I had nearly reached 145

the town, when the young man suddenly said, very slowly, 'Do you speak 146

English?' As I soon learnt, he was English himself!
