GOT OLD PHONES?

HERE’S HOW TO REUSE,

RECYCLE OR SELL THEM

It’s natural to get the phone-upgrade thirst when the likes of Apple, Samsung and others keep coming out with newer models. But what do you do with a serviceable but outdated device? Here’s a guide for figuring out what you might do with last year’s model (or even older ones).

DONATE TO CHARITY

Several charities accept old phones as a donation. But these groups probably won’t physically give your old phones to people in need. Instead, they’ll o ften sell your phone to recyclers and keep the money which goes towards daily management. Nearly 60 percent of the phones charities collect are resold, according to a recent survey. They will pay for shipping if you are mailing three or more phones.

SELL SELL SELL

Once new models come out, older ones will flood onto eBay and other resale sites. How much money you can make off your old phone depends on the brand and how much wear and tear it’s seen.

The resale site Gazelle, for example, is offering $140 for a Verizon-ready Samsung Galaxy S7 in “good” condition. What does “good” mean? The phone has no cracks on the screen or body,

powers on and makes calls, and is free of major scratches. A “perfect” phone that looks like it’s never been used will land you $15 more.

REUSE, REPURPOSE

Even without cellular service, your old phone will be able to get on Wi-Fi, so you can use it to post on Facebook or do pretty much anything else you want provided you are in Wi-Fi range. Keep it for yourself, give it to a broke friend, or load it up with kid-friendly apps and games and hand it down to your children. Or just keep it as a backup in case something horrible happens to your main phone.

56. Why do charities choose to sell a large proportion of their donations?

A. Their management has made such a decision.

B. They need the earnings to cover their daily expenses.

C. The donations they have received exceed what they need.

D. They can earn more profits without paying for shipping.

57. Which of the following is TRUE about old models?

A. Old models crowd onto online resale sites before new models are launched.

B. The better condition old models are in, the higher price they will fetch.

C. The old models handed down to your kids should be able to get on Wi-Fi.

D. You should always have an old model at hand in case your main phone fails

B

Why are some people more persuasive than others? We bring together some researches into the science of persuasion.

An American researcher, Edward Burkley, studied the influence of mental exhaustion on the resistance levels of 78 students. The plan was to try to persuade them to accept one month’s summer holiday instead of three. Half the students came to the study fresh. But the other half first had to complete a self-control task in which they wrote down all the thoughts that came into their heads while trying not to think about a white bear. He found that the students who had performed the white bear task were less resistant to the idea of giving up two months of holiday.

Two other researchers, Rosanna Guadagno and Robert Cialdini, compared the persuasive power of online communication with face-to-face meetings. They had a group of students discuss the introduction of new exams. The group was divided into pairs of the same sex, each pair including an experimenter whose role was to argue in favor of the idea. Half the discussions took place in an online chatroom, the other half face-to-face. While overall men performed similarly whether they participated in the electronic or face-to-face discussions, women in face-to-face discussions were more easily persuaded than those who only took part online.

In another experiment, John Sparks and Charles Areni asked 118 undergraduates to read testimonials(推荐书) about a scanner. In one version, the testimon ials included hesitation like “I mean” and “ummm”; in the other, there were none. The researchers found that when hesitant language was used, people were less easily convinced that this was a scanner worth buying – even when it was a better scanner at a lower price. Style was especially important, the researchers found, when time was limited. “If you can’t pay attention to what the speaker is saying,” Sparks says, “you pay attention to how they say it.”

Much study has gone into how emotions aid persuasion. The best known and most studied is fear. It serves well in campaigns that try to stop you from doing something, like smoking. But fear doesn’t always work, says Professor Monique Mitchell Turner, and over time, people become more resistant to scare methods. The same applies to guilt. “We don’t want people to tell us we’re bad

people,” says Turner. Anger, however, can be constructively used.

58. What’s the aim of the white bear task?

A. To make participants feel tired mentally.

B. To see what participants know about white bears.

C. To find out how well participants can control themselves.

D. To help persuade participants to accept a one-month holiday.

59. We learn from Paragraph 3 that if a woman wants to persuade another woman, she can ______.

A. ask a man to support her

B. behave in an aggressive way

C. talk to the woman face to face

D. communicate with the woman online

60. According to John Sparks and Charles Areni’s research, what is important for a testimonial?

A. The product price.

B. The writing style.

C. The quality of the product.

D. The length of the testimonial.

61. What will the author most probably talk about next?

A. How to use anger to persuade.

B. Turner’s other research findings.

C. Why emotions can help to persuade.

D. People’s resistance to anger methods.

C

What do you do when somebody hurts you? Do you want to hurt that person back, or do you hold it against them for the rest of your life? If you answered “yes” to these questions, know that you are like most people. To forgive is something that most people generally have difficulty with.

People don’t forgive readily, because it is easier to hate than to forgive. Some people think to forgive is a sign of weakness, but actually to forgive takes courage and effort.

Forgiveness is a gift from a generous heart. It is not a reward for good behavior. It is not based on whether the person deserves it or whether the person has asked for it.

Besides, forgiveness is an act and a process, which often takes time. The deeper your pain, the longer it usually takes to completely forgive. It is an act because it is not just the words you say, but also your actions which show if you’ve truly forgiven someone.

Forgiveness is necessary because it releases you from the burden of bitterness and hate. It takes a lot of energy to hate and to keep that hate in place. Hate puts unnecessary stress on your body. It is a well-known fact, proven by numerous studies, that bitterness and hate can actually make you sick. The moment that affected people forgive and let go of their hate, they will start to get well. Forgiveness brings freedom, whereas revenge (报复) is neither sweet nor satisfying.

I have personal experience of this. I used to be very cynical about life and didn’t forgive easily. At the time, I also struggled in every area of my life. Things just didn’t seem to work out for me. It is as if everything that could go wrong, always went wrong. That was until somebody told me to take a look at my attitude. And when I forgave those who wronged me and changed my attitude, everything else changed. It didn’t happen overnight. It took a while, but I could see and feel the difference.

Are things not working out in your life, despite you doing all the “right” things? Is it possible that you are holding “unforgiveness” in your heart? It is worth thinking about.

By Leonard J. Roost

62. Why is it hard for people to forgive?

A. Forgiveness means not giving in.

B. Forgiveness depends on good behavior.

63. What can we conclude from the text?

A. Hate may actually cause illness.

B. Revenge helps to reduce the hate in your heart.

C. When you feel sick, it makes it difficult to hate.

D. Hate goes away when you say you will forgive.

64. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?

A. B. C. D.

I: Introduction P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要点) C: Conclusion

D

Although Bertha Young was thirty she still had moments like this when she wanted to run instead of walk, to take dancing steps on and off the pavement, to throw something up in the air and catch it again, or to stand still and laugh at --- nothing --- at nothing, simply.

What can you do if you are thirty and, turning the corner of your own street, you are overcome, suddenly by a feeling of happiness --- absolute happiness!

O h, is there no way you can express it without being “drunk and disorderly”? How stupid civilization is! Why be given a body if you have to keep it shut up in a case like a rare, rare fiddle (小提琴)?

“No, that about the fiddle is not quite what I mean,” she thought, running up the steps and feeling in her bag for the key --- she’d forgotten it, as usual --- and rattling the letter-box. “It’s not what I mean, because --- Thank you, Mary” --- she went into the hall. “Is nurse back?”

“Yes, M’m.”

I’ll go upstairs.” And she ran upstairs to the nursery.

Nurse sat at a low table giving Little B her supper after her bath. The baby looked up when she saw her mother and began to jump.

“Now, my love y, eat it up like a good girl,” said nurse, setting her lips in a way that Bertha knew, and that meant she had come into the nursery at another wrong moment.

“Has she been good, Nanny?”

“She’s been a little sweet all the afternoon,” whispered Nanny. “We went to the park and I sat down on a chair and took her out of the pram (婴儿车) and a big dog came along and she pulled its ear. Oh, you should have seen her.”

Bertha wanted to ask if it wasn’t rather dangerous to let her pull a strange dog’s ear. But she did not dare to. She stood watching them, her hands by her side, like the poor little girl in front of the rich girl with the doll.

The baby looked up at her again, stared, and the n smiled so charmingly that Bertha couldn’t help crying:

“Oh, Nanny, do let me finish giving her supper while you put the bath things away.

“Well, M’m, she oughtn’t to be changed hands while she’s eating,” said Nanny, still whispering. “It unsettles her;it’s very likely to upset her.”

How absurd it was. Why have a baby if it has to be kept --- not in a case like a rare, rare fiddle --- but in another woman’s arms?

“Oh, I must!” said she.

Very offended, Nanny handed her over.

“Now, don’t excite her after her supper. You know you do, M’m. And I have such a time with her after!”

Thank heaven! Nanny went out of the room with the bath towels.

“Now I’ve got you to myself, my little precious,” said Bertha, as the baby leaned against her.

She ate delightfully, holding up her lips for the spoon and then waving her hands. Sometimes she wouldn’t let the spoon go; and sometimes, just as Bertha had filled it, she waved it away to the four winds.

When the soup was finished Bertha turned round to the fire. “You’re nice --- you’re very nice!” said she, kissing her warm baby. “I’m fond of you. I like you.”

And indeed, she loved Little B so much --- her neck as she bent forward, her pretty toes as they shone transparent in the firelight --- that all her feeling of happiness came back again, and again she didn’t know how to express it --- what to do with it.

“You’re wanted on the telephone,” said Nanny, coming back in victory and seizing her Little B.

65. In paragraph 3 and 15, a “rare, rare fiddle” is used to show that _____.

C. Bertha considers her baby girl an extraordinary child

A. a vain attempt to hide her joy at seeing Bertha

B. fear of dismissal from her job for untidy nursery

C. dislike for Bertha’s ill-timed visits to the nursery

D. a relief as she can at last eat her supper

67. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 11 imply?

A. Bertha wishes to have care-giving time with her baby

B. Bertha lacks emotional and psychological strength

C. Bertha desires a closer relationship with Nanny

D. Bertha suffers from an unrealistic hope of having more babies

68. Which of the following best describes the relationship between Bertha and Nanny?

A. Bertha feels that Nanny is a competent nurse and will do anything to liberate her from

chores.

C. Bertha prefers to leave the child in Nanny’s care so that she can fulfill her inappropriate

fantasies.

70. Which of the following sentences best describes Nanny’s possessiveness (占有欲)?

B. “Now, my lovey, eat it up like a good girl,” said nurse, setting her lips in a way that Bertha knew ...

C. “Now, don’t excite her after her supper. You know you do, M’m. And I have such a time with

her after!”

D. “You’re wanted on the telephone,” said Nanny, coming back in victory and seizing her Little B.

Searching under pressure often results in nervous interviewing and decision-making from relatively few options. If you are not in need of an immediate career change, here are ways you can improve your long-term career prospects today:

Identify at least two different roles. You do not have to be qualified for these positions today, nor do they have to exist in your company. However, these roles should be related to your current skill set. They are career options that look interesting. Once you have a couple of targets, think about why and what interests you. Pay close attention to what appeals to you, and write it down. This will give insight into your motivations and targets.

Subscribe to a career specific magazine. Knowledge is power in the workplace. All businesses must stay relevant to their customers in order to win the competitions and increase revenue. Reading about industry trends, advancements and success stories keeps you in touch with market conditions. This information allows you to see which companies and professionals are leading the peak. You can follow their examples in your own workplace. If you associate with those that stand out from the rest, you are likely to find yourself with better opportunities.

Do exceptional work. In any role, there is a way to perform at your best. Look for ways to deliver a top performance. Show up early, be flexible to new assignments, have a positive attitude, cooperate with other departments, pay attention to the little details.

Be professionally curious. Talk to people about their careers. Learn more about how success is measured in other roles, departments and companies. Ask people their thoughts on different industries. Challenge yourself to expand your business knowledge through interactions with people at regular time. People hire people. You never know what connections may be relevant when you start your next job search, so develop a habit of making good connections no matter where you go. Take the time to learn about others, and be helpful when you can.

As in all things in life, getting in front of a difficult task early is always less stressful than reacting to a career surprise. Changing jobs is to be expected. No matter how secure you feel today, the time will come when either you or your employer decide it is time to change.

One possible version:

From the charts, we can see a dramatically increasing trend of middle school students studying in the USA from 2003 to 2016, accounting for almost half of Chinese students in the USA.

There are many factors accounting for this phenomenon. Firstly, many parents choose to send their children abroad just to relieve their heavy academic pressure. Besides, many parents can afford the fees for tuition and board. They think studying abroad can not only broaden their horizons, but also acquire more advanced knowledge and skills.

As for me, a senior middle school student, I prefer to study in China. For one thing, the educational level in China has improved, so there is no need to study abroad to obtain high-quality education. For another, the booming Internet makes online lessons and lectures easily accessible, increasing our exposure to various information and knowledge. Therefore, I hold firm that I can learn what I want in China.

(For me, I’d like to go to America for further study. Yale University is my ideal one where most advanced knowledge sparks and world-famous experts and professors get together there. Besides, American free lifestyle also attracts me a lot for I really hate being restricted by so many rules. So I’ll work hard to be admitted to my ideal university.)

W: This job is for three days a week: Monday, Friday, and Saturday. Are you Okay with that?

M: Mmm... I was hoping to have Saturday free. But I need the job, so... can you tell me what exactly I will do?

Text 4

M: Do you know if John's coming home for dinner?

W: He'll be late. He said not to wait for him.

Text 5

W: I'm really tired from packing all these boxes for three hours. It's about time to call it a day.

M: I know. Maybe we could do it first thing tomorrow morning.

W: Why not? These orders are not urgent.

Text 6

M: Lisa? Hi!

W: Hi, Ned.

M: Don't you usually drive to work?

W: Usually, but not in bad weather.

M: Why is that?

W: The traffic gets a lot worse when it rains or snows.

M: I always take the train. It's a lot faster for me than driving.

W: It's faster for me, too, but the time isn't always convenient.

M: Yeah, but think of all the things you can do on the train 00 read a book or the newspaper...

W: Or answer my email... No thanks! My workday is long enough already.

Text 7

W: I think the car we saw yesterday would be a good deal. What do you think?

M: Yes, but I think you should ask someone to take a look at it just to be sure.

W: My friend Jack knows cars, and he helped me do the check this morning.

M: It was smart of you to think ahead. Have you and the salesman agreed on a price?

W: Yes, he finally agreed to accept the discounted price I asked.

M: Then have you thought about how to pay?

W: Well, I've saved up enough money to pay cash for this car.

M: Good. Let me go with you to make the payment and drive the car home for you.

W: Thank you. That would make it much easier for me.

M: You're welcome. Let's go take care of that right now.

Text 8

M: Being away from home for college can be stressful. Besides all the pressures of study, there's the pressure on your pocket. Today, let's go to a university to find out. Excuse me. Can I ask you a few questions?

W: Well, Okay.

M: How do you find the cost of living in the city?

W: Everything is expensive, including clothing, housing, and traveling.

M: So, what do you spend most on?

W: Transport, I think. For food, if I cook myself, it's not expensive at all. For clothing, I bring my clothes here from my home country, where they're nice and cheap. But every week, I have to spend more than 100 pounds on the trains.

M: Then what's the social life like?

W: I'm a very social person. I love hanging out with my friends and meeting new people. Thankfully, I don't drink nor smoke, so the only expense is maybe tickets to the cinemas, club, and so on.

Text 9

W: Can you fix a time for the next meeting, Alex? How about June 12th? That's after the trade exhibition.

M: I thought something was happening on that day, Rebecca.

W: Oh, yes. You're right. The people from Head Office are coming.

M: What time does their plane arrive? Can we have the meeting in the morning?

W: No, it's all arranged. I'm meeting them at half past ten, so I won't be available at all that day. M: Well, let's have the meeting earlier in June, then. The trade exhibition finishes on the third, doesn't it?

W: Yes, but we need John's sales report for the meeting. How's it going?

M: I'm afraid John hasn't started yet. The figures won't be in place till next week.

W: Will it be ready early in June?

M: Well, not really. He told me that he will finish them by June 10th.

W: So, we're looking at the week starting the 17th. How about two o'clock on that day?

M: I think that's Okay. Let's meet here again then.

Text 10

W: Hello, everyone. In today's program, I'd like to share a true story of mine. One day, my friends and I had just finished lunch at a hotel when it started to rain heavily. When it became lighter, I decided to brave the train to get car and go home. It was parked three blocks away. My friends argued I shouldn't go because at that time, I was due to give birth in three months. I promised I'd be very careful. One of them wanted to come with me, but I insisted she stay with another friend who needed help with her baby. When I walked to the first crossroads, a taxi stopped and a passenger beside me and told me he would walk with me to where I would go. I refused, but he insisted. During our walk, he kept telling me to walk slowly. When we got to the car park, I thanked him, and we parted ways. I did not get his name and may not even recognize him now. Did he purposely stop for me? I'll never know.

A .I 23 B .I 32 C .I 94 D .I 27 8 2.
