A computer is a machine designed to perform work mathematically and to store information that has been fed into it. It is run by either mechanical or electronic means. A large computer, for example, can add or subtract nine thousand times a second, multiply(乘)a thousand times a second, or divide five hundred times a second. Its percentage of error is about one in a billion digits(数位). It has been estimated that human beings making calculations average about one mistake per two hundred digits.

The heart of an electronic computer lies in its transistors. Its electronic circuits(电路)work a thousand times faster than the nerve cells in the human brain. A problem that might take a human being two years to solve can be solved by a computer in one minute, but in order to work properly, a computer must be given instructions--it must be programmed.

Computers can be designed for many specialized purposes--they can be used to prepare payrolls, guide airplane flights, direct traffic, even to play chess. Computers play an important role in modern automation in many plants and factories throughout the world.

Passage Three

Alaska, which was called Russian America before it was sold to the United States, joined the Union as the forty-ninth state in 1959. (Hawaii was the fiftieth state to join the Union.) Alaska is now the largest of all the 50 states in the U.S.

It was in 1867 that President A. Johnson’ s Secretary of State, Seward, bought Alaska from the Russians at a cost of $ 7.2 million. The buying of the huge northern land mass seemed at first something foolishly done. Not only was Alaska difficult to reach, but it was also hard to live in, and it appeared to have no importance in times of war. Besides, there are volcanoes there as Alaska lies on the Pacific “ring of fire.” In Alaska, large treeless are as are covered with snow all the year round. For these reasons the buying of Alaska was called “Seward’ s Folly” at that time.

However, in 1896 gold was found in Alaska, and people poured into the land quickly. Since then other important natural resources were discovered, including oil. Soon, people changed their thinking about “Seward ‘ s Folly”.

But most people visit Alaska in order to see the endless beauty of nature that the northern land discloses to them. For instance, there are about 11,000 islands in Alaska. And in a certain area of Alaska, the sun does not set for 82 days every year.

D)Because there are volcanoes and “ring of fire” in Alaska.

68. Tourists go to Alaska_____.

Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it, and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to pay for regular maintenance and repairs to the vehicle. Since you must return the car finally, you are paying to repair someone else's car.
