“I am busy, mom!” Jason shouted back at his mother. He had spent three hours so far working to this point in the game. He c ouldn’t stop now.

“Tomorrow, maybe…” There were more levels to beat tomorrow, though, May be he had played tomorrow. He’d have to see what mood he was in. He thought he heard footsteps walking away, but h e was too busy beating the next level to care.
An hour later, Jason’s father came home. It was dinner time after his father washed up and sat down. Jason didn’t even hear his name bei ng called to the table. He didn’t hear his father walk at behind him and ask him to turn the game off, either.

I had been swimming for competitions for about five years. But I was ready to give up, because I felt I was horrible at it. I was often the only Chinese American at a swim competition. Worst of all though, at each competition I kept receiving “Honora ble Mentions” which simply means, “Thank you for coming and showing up. You didn’t even rank first, second or third, but we don’t want you to go home with nothing.”
The very day before a big swim meeting, I decided to break the news to my grandma that I was dropping out of the swim team. You have to know my grandma —she was a small woman but could run all the operation of her house without ever leaving her sofa or raising her voice. As I sat next to my grandma, I laid my head on her tiny little lap so that she could rub it.
When I told her of my wish to quit swimming, she suddenly pushed my head off her lap, sat me straight up facing her and said, “Baby, remember these words! A quitter never wins and a winner never quits. Your grandmother doesn’t raise lose rs or quitters. You go to that swim meeting tomorrow, and you swim like you are a grandchild of mine, you hear?”
I was too afraid to say anything but “Yes, ma’am.”
The next day I arrived at the swim meeting, and as I got on the board, I noticed the other girls with their skintight caps, goggles and speedo suits were there to do one thing —beat me. Suddenly, my grandma’s words rang in my head, “Quitters never win and winners never quit.”
The competition began and I was swimming harder that before. As I drew my right arm back. I noticed I was tied with one person. I thought we were fighting for the eighth place (the last place) and I refused to finish dead last. So I added more kickes on the last two hundred yards.
I hit the wall and looked to the left and to the right for the swimmers who had beaten me. But no one was there. That day, at age fifteen, I broke the national 400-freestyle record.
Back at Grandma’s, I laid my head on the lap and told her about our great race.
