We talk a lot in the U.S. about success. Success is the dream and the end point. And not by coincidence the idea that hard work leads to personal success is as American as apple pie.

But the reality is that sometimes we fail. And sometimes things, through no fault of our own, don't go our way. We're faced with a life-changing diagnosis (诊断), the passing of a loved one or job loss. We don't, as a society, have as much to say here.

I think uncertainty does us all harm. We'd feel better equipped to deal with uncertainty if we talked about it more. I had so fully bought into the belief that with enough effort, I could control what happened in my life. I actually caught myself thinking I could "work my way out" of my cancer. As it turns out, cancer doesn't really care about one's work.

We might also make wiser decisions —this isn't just a feel-good exercise. For example, technology and medicine have progressed to the point that many patients are living longer than they would have even a decade ago. These are achievements worth celebrating. And yet I wonder if the focus on success is sometimes misguided here as well. If it is one reason why we tend to pursue expensive end-of-life treatments, they often accomplish little other than to make a patient's final days painful and frightening. The fact is that, when asked, many patients would rather focus on living meaningfully in their final days.

My hope here is to make a case for thinking about meaning, in the same way we think about pursuing success. In that spirit, I've asked several people, each of whom has met misfortune, how they find meaning in their lives. The diversity in their responses reflects the fact that there are no right or wrong answers here. We each can find meaning in different things.

(1)What is the typical American idea?

A. Success is the dream.

B. Success lies in hard work.

C. Apple pie is the best food.

D. Failure is always avoidable.

(2)What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 3 probably refer to?

A. Equipment.

B. Culture.

C. Uncertainty.

D. Belief.(3)In their final days many patients actually want to______.

A. live as long as possible

B. live a more meaningful life

C. make great progress in medicine

D. get expensive end-of-life treatments

(4)What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. The author thinks pursuing success is wrong.

B. We can benefit from some unlucky things.

C. We can find the same meaning in our life.

D. Personally there are different meanings in life.

【答案】(1)B

(2)C

(3)B

(4)D

I'm not so sure I like my friends any more. I used to like them — to be honest. We'd have lunch, talk on the phone or exchange e-mails, and they all seemed normal enough. But then came Facebook and I was introduced to a sad fact: many of my friends have dark sides that they had kept from me.

Today my friends show off the more unpleasant aspects of their personalities via Facebook. No longer hidden, they're thrown in my face like TV commercials —unavoidable and endless advertisements for the worst of their personalities.

Take Fred. If you were to have lunch with him, you'd find him warm, and down-to-earth. Read his Facebook and you realize he's an unbearable, food-obsessed bore. He'd pause to have a cup of coffee on his way to save a drowning man — and then write about it.

Take Andy. You won't find a smarter CEO anywhere, but now he's a CEO without a company to lull. So he plays Mafia Wars on Facebook. He's doing well —level 731. Thanks to Facebook, I know he's playing about 18 hours a day. Andy, you've run four companies — and this is how you spend your downtime(业余时间)? What happened to golf? What happened to getting another job?

Take Liz. She is positive that the H1N1 vaccine(甲流疫苗) will kill us all and that we should avoid it. And then comes Chris who likes to post at least 20 times a day on every website he can find, so I get to read his thoughts twice, once on Facebook and once on Twitter.

In real life, I don't see these sides of people. Face to face, my friends show me their best. They're nice, smart people. But face to Facebook, my friends are like a blind date which goes horribly wrong.

I'm left with a dilemma. Who is my real friend? Is it the Liz I have lunch with or the anti-vaccine

lunatic(狂人)on Facebook? Is it the Fred I can grab a sandwich with or the Fred who weeps if he's at a party and the wine isn't up to his standards?

(1)What's Andy probably busy in doing now?

A. He's running his company.

B. He's playing golf all day.

C. He's looking for another job.

D. He's playing computer games.

(2)Who is opposed to the H1N1 vaccine in the text?

A. Fred.

B. Andy.

C. Liz.

D. Chris.

(3)According to the text, Facebook tends to ______.

A. present another side of people

B. offer some food for free

C. show endless advertisements

D. get you to more parties

(4)The text is developed mainly by ______.

A.giving examples

B.following the time order

C.listing figures

D.raising questions

【答案】(1)D

(2)C

(3)A

(4)A

So he plays Mafia Wars on Facebook. He's doing well —level 731. Thanks to Facebook, I know he's playing about 18 hours a day.“所以他在Facebook 上玩游戏,他打的不错-731级。

Take Liz. She is positive that the H1N1 vaccine(甲流疫苗) will kill us a ll and that we should avoid it.“以Liz为例。

Today my friends show off the more unpleasant aspects of their personalities via Facebook.“现在我的朋友通过Facebook展现出他们性格中令人不愉快的方面)和倒数第二段的In real life, I don't see these sides of people. Face to face, my friends show me their best. They're nice, smart people. But face to Facebook, my friends are like a blind date which goes horribly wrong.” 故选A。

故选A。

A hospital has been forced to ban Pokemon Go players from the site after a monster hub(妖怪枢纽站) was found in the A&E department. Royal Stoke University Hospital discovered that its casualty unit(急诊室) is on the same spot as a Pokemon Go 'gym' —— where players can train their newly caught Nintendo creatures.

The University Hospitals of North Midlands Trust agreed last week that patients can play Pokemon Go on wards because walking around is healthy. But the Trust has been forced to post a warning on its website about public access to A&E. It said if Pokemon Go becomes a major annoyance it would ask Nintendo——which decides on the locations of the virtual gyms according to GPS——to have it removed from the premises(道馆).

Kevin Parker, associate chief nurse, said, "Members of the public who do not need to be at Royal Stoke should not attempt to enter A&E or any other part of the hospital building to play the game. The A&E department is incredibly busy this summer. We want the public to understand that anybody who visits the hospital solely to play the game will provide an unwanted distraction to the important work of the hospital. I'm also aware of various reports in the media of unsafe areas that the game has been played in."

“Royal Stoke University Hospital is a safe area where gamers can enjoy Pokemon Go." Michelle Harris, the Trust's manager, said the game could still be played by those already in hospital. "We recognize that the Pokemon Go game encourages walking and exercise, which is something that the Trust is equally keen to promote," she said.

There are a number of "walking routes" established throughout the Trust that can be used to combine walking and playing the game. "Walking just 30 minutes, five times a week, can help reduce the risk of preventable illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease."

There have been several warnings about the game since its UK release. Last week a group of teenagers in Wiltshire were left stranded almost 100ft underground after they got carried away searching for Pokemon Go characters. The four boys, aged 16 and 17, ended up getting lost and had to wait to get a phone signal before they could call for help. Eventually, they contacted Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue team, who took them to safety. Damien Bence, of the fire and rescue team, said: "Pokemon Go is obviously leading people into dangerous situations."(1)It seems that Pokemon Go is a game______.

A. designed to help patients in hospital recover sooner

B. helping cure such diseases as obesity, diabetes and heart disease

C. encouraging players to walk and exercise instead of staying indoors

D. warning teenagers of the places easy to get lost or attacked

(2)The A&E department is incredibly busy because________.

A. more patients' arrival increases the workload of the A&E department

B. doctors' playing the game makes the A&E department less efficient

C. players' injury increases the workload of the A&E department

D. players' arrival disturbs the work of the A&E department

(3)The underlined word in the last paragraph probably means_______.

A. hurt

B. disturbed

C. trapped

D. threatened

(4)The passage is mainly about________.

A. the negative effects of Pokemon Go since its UK release

B. the applications of Pokemon Go in hospitals since its UK release

C. the popularity of Pokemon Go since its UK release

D. the establishment of Pokemon Go virtual gyms since its UK release

根据倒数第三段中的“We recognize that the Pokemo n Go game encourages walking and exercise, which is something that the Trust is equally keen to promote,”可知“口袋妖怪”是一款鼓励玩家步行和锻炼,而不是呆在室内的游戏,故选C。

根据第三段中的“Kevin Parker, associate chief nurse, said, ’Members of the public who do not need to be at Royal Stoke should not attempt to enter A&E or any other part of the hospital building to play the game...‘”护士长凯文·帕克说道:“身体健康的普通民众不应该来医院的急诊室或者其他科室玩‘口袋妖怪'游戏,今年夏天急诊部非常忙碌。由此推断出,急诊部非常地忙碌是因为玩家的到来扰乱了急诊部的工作,故选D。

(3)考查词义猜测。根据最后一段中的“The four boys, aged 16 and 17, ended up getting lost and had to wait to get a phone signal before they could call for help.” 由此推断出,“Last week a group of teenagers in Wiltshire were left stranded almost 100ft underground after they got carried away searchi ng for Pokemon Go characters.”

最后一段中的“There have been several warnings about the game since its UK release.”

"Old wives tales" are beliefs passed down from one generation to another. For example, most of us remember our parents' telling us to eat more of certain foods of not to do certain things. Is there any truth in these teachings? Some of them agree with present medical thinking, but others

have not passed the test of time.

Did your mother ever tell you to eat your carrots because they are good for your eyes? Scientists now report that eating carrots can help prevent a serious eye disease called macular degeneration. Eating just one carrot a day can reduce the possibility of getting this disease by 40%. Garlic(蒜)is good for you ,too. It can kill the type of virus that causes colds.

Unfortunately, not all of Mom's advice passed the test of medical studies. For example, generations of children have been told not to go swimming within an hour after eating. But research suggests that there is no danger in doing so. Do sweets cause tooth problems? Well, yes and no. Sticky sweets made with grains tend to cause more problems than sweets made with simple sugars.

Even though science can tell us that some of our traditional beliefs don't hold water, there is still a lot of truth in the old wives' tales. After much of this knowledge has been accumulated (积累) from thousands of years of experience in family health care. We should respect this body of knowledge even as we search for clear scientific support to prove it true or false.

(1)Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

A. Eating garlic is good for our eyes.

B. Carrots prevent people from catching colds.

C. Swimming after a meal is dangerous.

D. Sticky sweets tend to damage our teeth.

(2)According to the passage, what does the underlined phrase "hold water" mean?

A. To be believable.

B. To be valuable.

C. To be admirable.

D. To be suitable.(3)Why do we need to respect the body of knowledge in the old wives' tales?

A. Because it is told by our ancestors.

B. Because it is scientifically supported.

C. Because it is based on many years' experience.

D. Because it is related to family health care.

(4)What is the author's attitude toward "old wives' tales" in the text?

A. Subjective

B. Objective

C. Dissatisfied

D. Curious

【答案】(1)D

(2)A

(3)C

(4)B

Sticky sweets made with grains tend to cause more problems than sweets made with simple sugars."

根据最后一段" there is still a lot of truth in the old wives' tales. After much of this knowledge has been accumulated (积累)from thousands of years of experience in family

health care." " 老人言"仍然有许多真理,这些知识是从几千年的家庭保健经验中积累起来的。它是基于多年的经验。故选C。

(4)推理判断题。根据文章第三、四自然段可知作者分析了他的可信性和不可信性,作者对于" 老人言"持客观态度,故选B。

5.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

After I was married and had lived in Japan for while, my Japanese gradually improved to the point where I could take part in simple conversations with my husband and his friends and family. And I began to notice that often, when I joined in, the others would look surprised, and the conversational topic would come to a stop. After this happened several times, it became clear to me that I was doing something wrong. But for a long time, I didn't know what it was.

Finally, after listening carefully to many Japanese conversations, I discovered what my problem was. Even though I was speaking Japanese, I was handling the conversation in a Western way.

A Western-style conversation between two people is like a game of tennis. If I introduce a topic, a conversational ball, I expect you to hit it back. If you agree with me, I don't expect you simply to agree and do nothing more. I expect you to add something-a reason for agreeing, another example, or a detailed explanation to carry the idea further. But I don't expect you always to agree. I am just as happy if you question me, or challenge me, or completely disagree with me. Whether you agree or disagree, your response will return the ball to me.

A Japanese-style conversation, however, is not at all like tennis or volleyball. It's like bowling. You wait for your turn. And you always know your place in line. It depends on such things as whether you are older or younger, a close friend or a relative stranger to the previous speaker, in a senior or junior position, and so on.

When your turn comes, you step up to the starting line with your bowling ball and carefully bowl it. Everyone else stands back and watches politely, murmuring encouragement. Everyone waits until the ball has reached the end of the alley(球场)and watches to see if it knocks down all the pins, or only some of them, or none of them. There is a pause, while everyone registers your score.

Then, after everyone is sure that you have completely finished your turn, the next person in line steps up to the same starting line, with a different ball. He doesn't return your ball, and he does not begin from where your ball stopped. And there is always a suitable pause between turns. There is no rush, no scramble for the ball.

If you have been trained all your life to play one game, it is no simple matter to switch to another, even if you know the rules. Knowing the rules is not at all the same thing as playing the game.

(1)The author makes all of the following arguments EXCEPT that _____.

A. Japanese-style conversations are like bowling.

B. western-style conversations are like tennis or volleyball

C. in Japanese-style conversations, you must wait your turn to speak

D. western-style conversations are longer than Japanese-style conversations

(2)The author's purpose in writhing this article is to _____.

A. instruct

B. entertain

C. joke

D. criticize

(3)The main idea of the article is _______.

A. people talk differently in Japan than in the West

B. it's important to take part in conversations

C. talking with someone from another country proves difficult

D. it's rude to interrupt someone who is speaking

【答案】(1)D

(2)A

It was the night before my election. I was running for Sophomore Vice President.

I had prepared a performance for the election--a funny boxing match. The fight had popular moves as seen in Dodge Ball, Iron Man, and Super Smash Brothers. In the end, I would perform my famous move, the Power-Punch from Hot Rod.

My friend Cheyenne and I rehearsed (排练) the fight for hours, but the fight would not be a fight without music and sound effects. This is where my brother came in. He stayed up all night to work on that soundtrack. And when my computer's disk burner (刻录机) went out at 6 in the morning, he spent a college student's week's worth of incomes to replace it.

Why would he go into all that trouble? Because he knew that out of all the other important things he could be doing, this was imperative to me. He knew because it was once important to him. Having graduated from Layton High just a year earlier, he knew what it was like to be in the

center of people's attention. He knew how fun high school could be, and he wanted me to have a great experience.

I ended up losing the election, but that day changed my world forever. The lesson my brother taught me became my most important belief. But it wasn't until I had a similar opportunity that I really understood why he cared so much.

What did it take for me to understand? It was the performance. The rest of the cast and I would rehearse every day after school for 6 months all for what? The chance to perform a play eight times. As I came out on that stage for the first time and listened to the laughter, I was filled with joy. By the end of the play, the audience broke into tears, and so did we. What happened? We had the sweet opportunity of giving them an unforgettable theatre moment -- a moment to laugh, reflect, and shed tears.

(1)Why did the author prepare a performance?

A. To prove he had a gift for performing.

B. To introduce moves from some movies.

C. To celebrate his success after the election.

D. To increase his chance of winning the election.

(2)How did the author's brother respond when the computer's disk burner went out? A. He decided to give up in the end. B. He bought one with his own money.

C. He found another way to make music.

D. He borrowed one from a college student.

(3)What does the underlined word "imperative" in Paragraph 4 mean?

A. Important

B. Pleasant

C. Difficult

D. Useful

(4)What did the author most probably learn from his brother?

A. We should try our best to do everything well.

B. We should spread the kindness we have received.

C. Family members should always support each other.

D. Happiness comes from what we do to brighten others' life.

【答案】(1)D

(2)B

(3)A

We were silently waiting on the platform in the late afternoon. There he was, my 80-year-old grandfather with his silvery hair. And there I was, a teenage girl in my jeans and T-shirt. His aged but still clear blue eyes were taking in the scene as I wondered how I was going to get through the next two days. Why did I ever agree to accompany my cranky grandpa on a train ride from New York to Georgia?

No one else wanted to be the fellow traveler since my grandfather refused to fly. In contrast, I loved to fly since I wanted to get to the destination as quickly as possible. No matter what anyone told my grandfather about the comfort and safety of flying, he refused to book a flight, saying, "It's not just the trip; it's the adventure of getting there."

With my first step onto the train, the journey was already different from what I expected. The train was modem and filled with friendly travelers. We settled into the club car, where we could enjoy food and drinks while watching the scenery pass. Instead of listening to my music, I became a willing audience and learned family history that I had never had the time or patience to learn. With teary eyes, he told me that going to family events was hard for him since my grandmother died. It always made him think about those who were no longer with us. For the first time I felt I understood him. I gained a new appreciation for our time together.

In this fast-paced world, we often miss important moments. There is great significance in listening to elders who offer a piece of their history and experience. I may be more open to opportunities to stay with my grandpa. Life isn't just about the destination; it's about the journey.(1)What does the underlined word "cranky" in paragraph 1 mean?

A. Health.

B. Strange.

C. Selfless.

D. Outgoing.

(2)What did the author think of the journey at first?

A. It would be boring.

B. She would learn something during it.

C. It would be a chance to know about her grandpa.

D. She would enjoy the beautiful scene during it.

(3)What made the author change her attitude towards staying with her grandpa?

A. Her grandpa's appreciation of her.

B. Her grandpa's missing her relatives.

C. The sad stories of her grandmother.

D. The new understanding of her grandpa.

(4)What can we learn from the text?

A. Listening to elders will help us learn a lot.

B. Caring for elders needs a lot of creativity.

C. There always is beautiful scenery along the journey.

D. Travelling by train is more comfortable than by plane.

The United States is home to 562 recognized American Indian Nations each with its own language.

Yet the number of native. Americans with the ability to speak their tribe's language has decreased over the past century.

Now, Indian Nations are trying different ways to expand the number of native speakers, and increase interest in their communities to learn tribal languages.

Since the late 1800s many American Indian children have attended boarding schools. At that time, Indian children were required to attend schools by law, and the government forced Indian

Spider-Man: Far From Home, July 5, US

Tom Holland, the lead actor of 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming, returns to play Peter Parker, a high school student who gains superpowers after being bitten by a spider.

When we see him again in theaters Spider-Man will have a new red-and-black suit. The movie will take the famous wall-crawler on a global adventure outside of the US. According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, Spider-Man will try a return to his "normal" self; he will try to find his old powers on his new journey.

When the pair fought face to face in Fast and Furious 8 (2017), a confrontation (对峙) was considered as the "battle model for warriors". The action and chemistry really excited their audience.

But the new action scenes between an MI6 agent Hobbs and the killer Shaw will have to be good to beat their performance in the 2017 movie.

This is a brand-new version of the classic children's film. The story of wide-eyed young lion Simba still remains in hearts of world audiences even after 25 years. In this re-telling, Simba again begins the difficult journey to become the King of the Pride Lands, a vast African prairie.

Flying for a long time, you finally arrive at the place where you can relax—your hotel room. Now you throwyour bag on the bed, turn on the TV and watch an international news programme on a satellite channel probably from UK or the USA. The main international broadcasters are BBC World and CNN. With an audience of over 1.5 billion people, these are popular channels that offer good-quality news programmes. In both companies, the journalists are experienced writers that produce journalism of a high standard. However, there are alternative news channels which people watch because they want a less traditional or non-Western view on world events. Russia Today and Al Jazeera International, an Arabic company, are international channels that broadcast in English. Both companies say they give a fresh view on big stories, and their experienced journalists often report from places where Western journalists do not work, and so they give us stories that we don't normally see. The Internet offers more variety. OneWorldTV is an Internet site where you can find stories about the developing world and human rights, rather than the usual stories about US politics and business. The writers for this company are often local people who write the stories for free. This non-professional journalism is increasing, and it certainly offers more choices. This increase in citizen journalism means that you can write the news, too. Main news broadcasters often use photographs and stories that members of the general public send to them, especially when there is a dramatic breaking news story. Besides this, some blogs are popular sources of news, and the website NowPublic lets you write stories using information you can get from anywhere, including sites like Youtube, Flickr and Twitter. Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it's hard for you to communicate with your parents, don't worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟). Don't argue (争辩) with your parents. Don't get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won't consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can't express yourself well if you are angry. Go someplace to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don't think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter. Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael's mother didn't agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days. Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊敬) to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong. Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life. A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!

What a newspaper includes is decided by its editors. The managing editor decides which stories are newsworthy and gives reporters their tasks. To an editor, there are two kinds of news: hard news, such as the election (选举) of a president, and soft news. Soft news includes stories about a new dance craze, a beautiful historic building, or an interesting person. The soft news fills whatever space is left after the hard news is put into the newspaper space. There is also public service news to fit in-information about meetings and lectures, free health programs, or changes in a local library’s hours. The managing editor decides how important a story is. If a story is very important, it is marked for a headline on the front page. Less important stories appear farther back in the paper. The story editor takes a story and decides to “boil or trim it”. If the editor decides to boil a story, it becomes front-page article. Depending on the size of a paper, there may be a sports editor, a business editor or an art editor. On a small weekly paper, an editor may cover two or more of these areas. Once all the stories are written, they are given to a copy editor, who corrects any mistakes and fits the articles into the newspaper’s format(版式). The makeup editor, with the managing editor, usually dec ides how the paper will look. The editor’s job is to decide whether a page will look. This editor’s job is to deicide whether a page will carry two stories and four ads or six stories and one ad. Editors may rewrite or redesign many of the pages as more stories come from the pressroom. 61. An example of hard news is _______ A. the election of a president B. a story about a historic building C. a new fashion in clothes D. information about health programs 62. Where a news story is put in the newspaper depends on___________ A. its length B. its style C. its importance D. its title 63. What does the underlined word “trim” in the second paragraph mean? A. Reduce in size B. Increase in length C. Beautify in appearance D. Change in shape 64. Correcting the mistakes of all the articles is the work of_______ A. makeup editors B. copy editors C. managing editors D. business editors 65. What’s the purpose of the passage? A. To persuade people to work as editors. B. To tell the readers how editors are educated. C. To introduce some famous editors. D. To show how a newspaper is made.

Earlier this year, China achieved a new milestone (里程碑) in space research. On January 3, 2019, Chang'e-4 became the first lunar probe (月球探测器) in history to successfully land on the far side of the moon. The Earth's gravity (重力) slows the moon's rotation (自转), matching it to the speed of its orbit (公转). Therefore, the far side of the moon is almost "dark" and has never been seen. It's this sense of the unknown that makes the far side of the moon such an interesting place for scientific and space research. Being blown by solar (太阳的) winds, the far side may have the special minerals (矿物质). For this reason, Chang'e-4 will study the effect of solar winds on the lunar surface and any mineral found by the spacecraft. Chang'e-4 is also carrying flower seeds, potatoes and silkworm eggs to see whether life is possible on the moon. If it is, then the moon will become a possible choice for space travel in the future. However, research of the "dark" side isn't easy. As the far side is blocked(阻断) off from us, radio noise coming off Earth is also blocked. This is why China's relay satellite (中继卫星) Queqiao was sent up in May, 2018. Thanks to Queqiao, the communication problem between Earth and Chang'e-4 has been well solved. Power supply (电源供应) is also a challenge to the task. Chang'e-4 gets energy from the sun through its solar panels. As we know, a lunar day has the length (长度) of 28 Earth days. After Chang'e-4 was sent up on December 8, 2018, it took the probe over 20 days to orbit the moon to be in a position to be able to land in moon daylight and use its solar panels. Luckily, everything goes well, Chang'e-4 has worked on the "dark" side for over 5 months. It has sent back many photos of the far side of the moon and has been used to carry out some scientific experiments. The New York Times used the word "groundbreaking" to praise the task and wrote that "it will offer help to the history and development of the moon". (1)When was Chang'e-4 sent up? A. In May, 2018. B. On December 8, 2018. C. On January 3, 2019.
