Is it difficult for you get up in the morning? Do you sometimes oversleep? Are you often late for work or school? Yes? Then Hiroyuki Sugiyama of Japan has a special bed for you. Hiroyuki’s bed will get you up in the morning! Here is how it works:

The bed is connected to an alarm clock. First, the alarm clock rings. You have a few minutes to wake up. Next, a tape recorder in the bed plays soft music or other pleasant sounds. A few minutes later, a second recording plays. The second recording can be loud music or unpleasant sounds. If you don’t get up after the second recording, you’ll be sorry. A mechanical “foot” is in the bed. The mechanical foot kicks you in the head. Then the bed waits a few more minutes. What! You’re still in bed! Slowly, the top of the bed rises higher and higher. The foot of the bed goes lower and lower. Finally, the bed is vertical. You slide off the bed and onto the floor. You are awake and out of bed.

Passage 2

A major new development in systems of work in Britain is taking place. Flexible working

hours, or “flextime”, are catching on fast, and this trend is continuing. In 1973, over 500 organizations had adopted the idea, and by 1974, its number had risen to over 200,000.

Flexible working hours were invented in Germany in the late 1960s but reached Britain only in 1972. The system allows workers to start and finish work whenever they want, with only two requirements. These are, firstly, that all workers must be present for certain “key”times in the day and secondly, that all workers must work an agreed total number of hours per week.

The system has proved an almost total success wherever it has been tried.

A survey of 700 workers on flexible hours showed three main advantages: a better balance between working and private life, avoidance of the need to travel during rush hours, and the ability to be able to finish a certain task before leaving.

From the employers’ point of view, the system tends to increase productivity, reduce labor turnover and give the worker a greater sense of duty.

Passage 3

Human beings, however, have something that no animal has. Human beings have the ability to express their actions, feelings and ideas through words. They can also write words down in order to communicate past events and to send messages to people far away.

Even though some birds have learned to repeat words, they do not understand the meaning of the words, and therefore they cannot use them to communicate ideas.

How did man first learn to speak? Perhaps we shall never know. However, we do know that as man’s knowledge increased he needed to use more sounds in order to express a greater number of feelings and ideas. It became necessary for him to communicate about a greater number of things. He began to make more and more different sounds, and gradually he put these sounds together to form, first, words, then groups of words, and then sentences. In different parts of the world, people developed their own systems of sounds and words. Today, w e call these systems ”languages”.

There are now about five thousand different languages and dialects in the world, and each of them contains many thousands of words.

16. Why can’t some birds use words to communicate ideas though they have learned to repeat them?

A. Because they don’t understand the meaning of the words.

B. Because they cannot put them into sentences.

C. Because they cannot remember them.

D. Because they don’t often use them.

17. How did human beings first learn languages?

A. Maybe nobody w ill know.

B. Surely we’ll know later.

C. Certainly nobody knows.

D. Perhaps we have known.

18. Why did man need to use more sounds as man’s knowledge increased?

Smoking is harmful in many aspects. First, smoking squanders huge amounts of money which may have been saved for more significant items, say, education and traveling. Second, more and more medical researches indicate that smoking is closely connected with many respiratory and cardiac diseases including heart disease and lung cancer. But its harms go beyond this. Scientific studies show that smoking can do more harm to other people than to smokers themselves. It is not unusual that a nonsmoking wife is killed by lung cancer in a family while her smoking husband remains alive.

College English Oral English Test 2015-2016学年度第二学期2015级普本、专升本期末 口语试题 注:学生通过抽签选定试题。每人准备1-2分钟。 Items 1-8 are from College English Integrated Course 2 (大学英语综合教程第二册) 1. What are the differences between Chinese and American learning ways? Which one do you prefer, why? Chinese learning way is show children exactly what to do or how to do, and teaching by holding children’s hand. American learning way is making children learn to think by himself, to solve problems on his own and even to discover new problems, for which creative solutions are wanted. It’s value originality and independence more than the Chinese do. In my perspective, I prefer tradition Chinese learning way. There are two reasons for it. First, children can come back for more and happier. He can know the solution immediately and learn effetely. Second, I was taught by this tradition Chinese way, and I think my learning ability is well now. 2. How do you comment on Karl Green's way of life? Give your reasons.Karl Green lives in a modest apartment, wears suitable cloth and has a dependable 1999 car. Though he is not rich, his life is colorful. First, he has a very healthy living condition, he exercises every day and feels vigorous and spirited. His “can do” attitude makes him healthy. Second, he has a very colorful mantle world. He writes poetry and shares it with friends. And he has many friends in the same hobbies. Third, he is devoting himself to charity. He rings the bell for the people who need help. He helps a lot of people and feels connect. He is psychological satisfaction. 3. What do you think causes the generation gap, and how to solve this problem? Several reasons can account for this common phenomenon. Firstly, the gap between p arents and teenagers is a little big. That’s to say, parents are mutual and old-fashioned while teenagers are quite active, passive and in style. Therefore, it’s normal that parent s and teenagers are both very hard to find the common language. Second, the most important reason is that parents and teenagers are usually not trying to under stand each other. Just like Heidi’s father get with on his children.Thirdly, the children want to be more independent, but the parents still want to take children under their wings. I think we should build a bridge between parents and children. The can have a family meeting and exchange each side’s opinion, communicating and to have an agreement.Parents can also observe their children’s behavior in order to understand their children’s personality and reduce the quarrels between them.In conclusion, to have a close relationship between parents and children, it is rather important for each

新标准大学英语综合教程2原文

新标准大学英语综合教程2原文 UNIT1 College just isn't special any more 1 "If you can remember anything about the 1960s, you weren't really there," so the saying goes. It may be true for those who spent their college years in a haze of marijuana smoke. But there is one thing everyone remembers about the 1960s: Going to college was the most exciting and stimulating experience of your life. 2 In the 1960s, California's colleges and universities had transformed the state into the world's seventh largest economy. However, Berkeley, the University of California's main campus, was also well-known for its student demonstrations and strikes, and its atmosphere of political radicalism. When Ronald Reagan ran for office as governor of California in 1966, he asked if Californians would allow "a great university to be brought to its knees by a noisy, dissident minority". The liberals replied that it was the ability to tolerate noisy, dissident minorities which made universities great. 3 On university campuses in Europe, mass socialist or communist movements gave rise to increasingly violent clashes between the establishment and the college students, with their new and passionate commitment to freedom and justice. Much of the protest was about the Vietnam War. But in France, the students of the Sorbonne in Paris managed to form an alliance with the trade unions and to launch a general strike, which ultimately brought about the resignation of President de Gaulle. 4 It wasn't just the activism that characterized student life in the 1960s. Everywhere, going to college meant your first taste of real freedom, of late nights in the dorm or in the Junior Common Room, discussing the meaning of life. You used to have to go to college to read your first forbidden book, see your first indie film, or find someone who shared your passion for Jimi Hendrix or Lenny Bruce. It was a moment of unimaginable freedom, the most liberating in your life. 5 But where's the passion today? What's the matter with college? These days political, social and creative awakening seems to happen not because of college, but in spite of it. Of course, it's true that higher education is still important. For example, in the UK, Prime Minister Blair was close to achieving his aim of getting 50 per cent of all under thirties into college by 2010 (even though a cynic would say that this was to keep them off the unemployment statistics). Yet college education is no longer a topic of great national importance. Today, college is seen as a kind of small town from
