laksa(拉沙、叻沙)、娘惹糕点

Ways of doing business

time

?Brazilian conduct business only through personal connections. There must be an implicit understanding that the business relationship will be long-term.

?Make appointments at least 2 weeks in advance. Showing up at an office without an appointment is unacceptable in Brazilian business culture

?The best times to schedule appointments are between 10:00 a.m. and noon, and 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Give yourself 2 or 3 hours between each meeting, rather than scheduling your appointments “back to back‖.

?Avoid scheduling any appointments around “carnival”, which precedes Ash Wednesday圣灰星期三, the beginning of Lent圣斋.

?Poor punctuality is characteristic of Brazilian business culture. However Sao Paulo and Rio are not.

?Always arrive on time for a business meal or meeting at a restaurant. Brazilian business protocol demands punctuality on these occasions.

Appearance

?To feel comfortable in Brazil’s sweltering, tropical climate, wear clothing made of light materials and colors that will help keep you cool.

?Appearance is vital. You may wear jeans and a nice skirt and blazer to a meeting.

?Wear a 3-piece suit in winter. Fashionable but not in summer.

For men

?Wear dark suits in black, charcoal gray, or navy blue. Light colors in the summer months are acceptable.

Dark is better if you travel because it hides any dirt better.

?Ensure that your shoes are polished and kept in excellent condition.

For women

?Wear conservative dresses, suits, pantsuits, skirts, and blouses. Strive for an elegant rather than frumpish appearance.

?Nails should be well cared for.

?Make-up is not a strong feature among women who lean towards the natural look.

?Handshaking, often for a long time, is common in Brazil. Touching arms and elbows and backs are very common. Women exchange kisses by placing their cheeks together and kissing the air.

?Make an effort to learn some Portuguese, don’t worry about making mistakes. They will appreciate your efforts even if you vocabulary is limited.

greeting

?People quickly move to a first-name basis. Don’t, however, use first names until you are invited to do so.

Addressing a Brazilian by his or her first name is not necessarily a sign of familiarity.

?Always address your Brazilian contact by title. Dr. is a well used title.

For those without professional titles, the term “Senhor”or “Senhora”is used to precede the surname. If you have difficulties with a person’s name, inquire about the correct pronunciation

Gift giving

?Offer to buy lunch of dinner and use this opportunity to learn more about the recipient’s tastes.

?Avoid items in black or purple. handkerchiefs, knives, scissors, letter openers are interpreted as the severing of a close bond. Avoid practical gifts, since they are perceived as too personal, such as wallets, key chains, ties, sunglasses, jewelry, and perfume.

The Statue of Liberty

The idea of creating the Statue of Liberty began in France at a dinner party hosted by Edouard Rene Lefebvre Laboulaye, a scholar. Laboulaye and Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, a sculptor, began to discuss the idea of presenting the United States with a monument to memorialize independence and human liberty.

Bartholdi sailed from France

to New York on June 8, 1871, to propose the building of the statue

to honor the friendship between France and the United States. As the ship pulled into New York Harbor, Bartholdi spotted the perfect location, Liberty Island.

How many luggages are you checking in? Do you have a carry on? Can you place your baggage up here? Do you prefer window or aisle? Can I have a seat closest to the window? Here are your tickets. The gate number is on the bottom of the ticket. They will start boarding 20 minutes before the departure time. You should report to gate C2 by then. C2 is around the corner and down the hall. Thank you." * 如果你行李超重,对方会说 your luggage is overweight. Excuse me, Could I have a cup of orange juice, please 这种. Could I get another blanket, please, I'm a little cold. Could you lend me a pen to fill out this immigration form? Would it be possible to change seats with someone? I'm sorry, I think you are in my seat. 但特殊情况可能是,你到了后,发现屏幕上有你要转的航班号,但是后面的GATE是空的,这 时候你可以向机场工作人员确认下 hello, could you tell me which gate is for the flight XXX(航班号) please,一般他们都会回答这个飞机delay了,或者在maintain , 需要再等待一下。
