Model Test 8

Section A

l. W: Hello, this is Mary Conners. May I speak to my husband please?

M: He has just gone out with a customer to show him a new car. Shall I have him call back?

Q: What type of work does Mr. Conners do?

(C) He has just gone out with a customer to show him a new car.意思是Mr. Conners 去给顾客看新车,由此可见他应该是个汽车销售员。

2. M: How did you like the movie last night?

W: Well, considering the reviews it had received, we were expecting a much better one

Q: How did the woman feel about the movie?

(A) 从女士的回答中可以推断出她对电影的态度。We were expecting a much better one说明她们期待的电影要好得多,即实际的没有想像的好,因此她的态度应为失望。

3. W: Richard has offered to help in the project, why do you still keep it a secret?

M: We suspect he has something up his sleeves.

Q: What does the man think about Richard?

(D) 本题的关键是要理解短语have something up one's sleeves,意思是暗中已有打算,也就是说我们怀疑Richard主动帮助我们的原因,故选D。

4. W: I don’t like your secretary. She seems to be suspicious of everything.

M: That’s true, but it is balanced by her competence.

Q: Which is true about the secretary?

(A) 本对话中but后面的内容是题眼,虽然这个秘书suspicious of everything但是她很有能力(balanced by her competence),故A为正确答案。

5. W: Could we drop by the lab for a minute? I have some experiments running that I

need to check on before dinner.

M: Sure, I have plenty of time. I’d be interested to see what you’re working on, anyway.

Q: What will they do?

(A) 这个对话比较复杂,含有使动关系和定语从句。I have some experiments running that I need to check on before dinner.我有几个实验正在进行,晚饭前需要检查一下。由此判断A应为正确答案。

6. M: you sure were on the phone for a long time. To whom were you talking?

W: Oh, Sally. She always knows the latest news in town and she couldn’t wait to see me to talk it over.

Q: What can we assume about Sally?

(B) 在这个对话中,女士水Sally总是急于告诉她最新的新闻,而且男士说过女士打电话打了好长时间。由此可见,B为符合题意的答案。

7. W: I’m terribly sorry, Bill, I didn’t finish the report on time. Trust me, next time I

will get it done as soon as possible.

M: Sorry, Helen. I’m afraid there is no next time.

Q: What does the man mean?

(A) 这个对话中,女士向男士道歉,因为她没能及时完成报告,并且保证下一次会尽快的,可男士告诉她已经没有下一次了,也就是女士很可能丢了工作。

8. W: Have you heard about the air crash that occurred last Wednesday?

M: Yes, the newspapers said six crewmembers and sixty-four passengers were killed and fifteen passengers were injured.

Q: How many people suffered in the air crash?

(A) suffer一词指受到伤害,因此伤亡的人数都应该包括在内。做此题只要把在air crash中死去的、受伤的机组人员和乘客加在一块就是答案。6+64+ 15=85。

Conversation One

W: Hello, this is the Animal Helping Center. How can I help you?

M: Hello. My name is Jim Kam and I'm interested in adopting a pet.

W: Well, thank you for offering to adopt a pet, Mr. Kam. First, I'll need to ask you a few questions about your family and your home.

M: That's fine. What do you need to know?

W: Would you please tell me how many people there are in your family?

M: Only two -- me and my wife. We don't have any children.

W: So, two adults. Do you both work, Mr. Kam?

M: Yes, we do.

W: OK, I'll write that down under "Remarks" -- "both work". Now about your home.

How big is it?

M: It's a rather small flat, in Western. It's four hundred and eighty square feet.

W: Four hundred and eighty. OK, I'll tick this box then. So you have a garden, Mr.

Kam?

M: No, there's no garden.

W: No garden. Fine. Now you said that both of you work. Is somebody at home during the day?

M: Well. Usually we are both out during the day. However, my wife sometimes works during the evening, so she's occasionally at home in the morning.

W: In that case, I'll tick "No" for that question, and then, under "Remarks", I'll write "wife is at home some mornings". OK, then, what type of pet are you looking for?

M: Well, I'd prefer a dog, but my wife thinks a cat is better, and she's the one who'll be taking care of it - I travel quite a lot, you see -- so we've decided to request a cat.

W: We have a lot of cats that need homes, so I'm sure we can help you.

M: Oh, good. We'd prefer a cat that isn't too big, if possible. And it's best if it isn't too energetic.

W: OK, I'll write that in beside your request. "Not too big” and also "not too energetic". That's fine, Mr. Kam. Thank you for calling. I hope to contact you soon.

M: Thank you. Bye.

Conversation Two

M: I have been studying too much and need a change. So I am just making plans to go away during the January break.

W: Really? Where are you going?

M: I'm planning to visit New Mexico.

W: My sister and I had the vacation there last year and we had a great time.

M: Did you go skiing there?

W: Sure. There is a great ski resort.

M: Where is it?

W: Just half an hour away from the city there is a snow-covered slope.

M: Well. As the mountains are just thirty minutes away, I guess I should take my ice skates and my skis.

W: Definitely.

M: I heard the weather there is great.

W: It is. No humidity, moderate temperatures, but you do need to be careful about

high altitude.

M: What should I do about that?

W: Oh, just take it easy for a few days. Don't go hiking up to the mountains or exercise too vigorously. Just do everything gradually.

M: I'm sure I will be fine. And I will let you know about my trip when I come back.

Questions 13 to 15 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

13. What’s the main purpose of the man’s trip?

Passage One

Some people don't mind being fat. Other people can keep slim without any effort. But a lot of people do put on too much weight and don't like it. The question is, what can they do about it?

Some believe exercise can be helpful. But the trouble is that it only makes you want to eat more. You might sweat out a couple of pounds playing tennis or climbing a mountain, but you put it all back on again with a big steak or bread and jam.

Some believe that the less they eat, the slimmer they will be. They don't eat anything until they become weak with hunger. Some stick to milk and bananas. You'll find you need a lot of bananas, and unless you live where they grow, they aren't cheap. Another theory says that if you eat things like hard-boiled eggs, apples with their skins on, and lean meat which are hard for your stomach to digest, the more you eat, the thinner you get. This is because you use up the fat in your body to get the energy to digest the food.

For most of us these methods are too extreme. A helpful way is food-choosing. But what sort of food should we choose? The simplest way is just to cut down on

carbohydrates. That means not eating bread, potatoes, cakes, sugar, rice and so on and eating anything else you like. It's straightforward and often quite effective.

Still others like to be more scientific. They are calorie-counters. They get a table which tells them that, for example, 100 grams of roast leg of lamb gives you 330 calories and a 50-gram helping of Yorkshire pudding gives you 130 calories.

Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard.

16. What is people's attitude towards their weight?

(C) 细节题。文中的细节a lot of people do put on too much weight and don't like it 与答案C同义。

17. Which of the following methods of losing weight is NOT mentioned in the passage?

(D)细节题。文中提到了细节the less they eat, the slimmer they will be, lean meat which are hard for your stomach to digest, the more you eat, the thinner you get, calorie counters,A, B, C 都提到了。答案为D 。

18. According to the passage, what is the best way to keep slim?

(C) 综合理解题。从第二题讲到的细节综合理解便可得出答案为C。

Passage Two

A newspaper reporter's job can be very interesting. He meets all types of people and lives quite a busy life. He is on the rush for news all the time, then after several years he may get a desk job, and life becomes a bit more settled.

Let's look at his work a little more closely. One day he may have to interview the prime minister of a foreign country, and the next day he may be writing about a football match. Sometimes he may be I so busy that he has hardly any time to sleep. And at other times he may go on for days looking out for news materials, and yet return empty-handed.

In the beginning a reporter has to cover a very wide field. After the early years he becomes more specialized in his work. For example he may finally be asked to write only on court cases or politics or sports. Some reporters may become so specialized that they are asked only to write on a specific thing: horse racing, for example. In most newspaper houses there is at least one special racing correspondent. Some

newspapers have book reviewers. Their job is delightful -- they read the latest books and then write reviews on the ones they like. Then there are those who write on films, so they get to see them even before they are shown in the cinema -- how lucky, you would say!

A reporter's job can also be very dangerous. A number of them have died rushing from one assignment to another and if there is a flood or a riot they may get hurt or even be killed. Three years ago there was a reporter whose camera was smashed by a group of men because they were angry with him for taking their picture. Dangerous or not, one thing is certain and that is, their job is never dull!

Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard.

19. What can NOT be learned about a newspaper reporter's job?

(D) 综合理解题。从文章的第一、二、三段可以得出答案A、B、C,未提到D。因此D为本题答案。

20. Why are some reporters able to see some films even before they are shown in the cinema?

(B)细节题。文章的第三段最后一句提到了该原因there are those who write on films, so they get to see them even before they are shown in the cinema。

21. What can you infer from the passage?

(C) 推断题。答案在文中没有直接提到,但文章的最后一段说记者的工作非常危险,也就是说爱冒险的人才会觉得记者工作有吸引力。

Passage Three

Long ago, men knew a few things that could cause a kind of sleep, but these anaesthetics were weak. They could not be given in too large amount because they often caused death. If only a little was given, the sick men could still feel pain. So these old anaesthetics were almost useless. Operations without anaesthetics usually had to be done while the sick men could feel all the pain.

Any operation in those old days was very difficult. The doctor had to work while the sick man’s body moved nearly all the time. As the body was cut open, it tried to turn from side to side. How could a doctor do any operation carefully and quickly in conditions like those? When we remember that, the open cut were not kept clean, and

that even the doctor’s clothes were usually very dirty, we are not surprised to hereof a large number of deaths.

Today, however, we need not worry about feeling pain during the operation. There are kinds of anaesthetics which can easily cause the sick man to fall into a kind of sleep, and when he wakes, the operation is finished. A man can, in operations, talk about his work and studies to a friend while the doctors are cutting open the lower part of his body. One doctor even managed to cut off his own leg.

Questions 22 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard.

22. Why were the old anaesthetics almost useless?

(D)细节题。文章第一句就提到anaesthetics were weak,也就是说they were not strong enough。

23. Which of the following was NOT the reason for a large number of deaths in the old days?

(A) 综合理解题。文章的第二段提到了B、C、D三个原因: the body tried to turn from side to side, the open cuts were not kept clean, the doctor's clothes were very dirty 综合理解A为正确答案。

24. What is the advantage of the new anaesthetics used in hospitals today?

(B) 细节题。Today, however, we need not worry about feeling pain during the operation.此句与答案B同义。

25. Which of the following serves as the best title for passage?

(A)主旨题。文章主要讲的是麻醉药的过去和现在,因此A是最佳选择。

Section C

Failure is probably the most fatiguing experience a person ever has. There is nothing more enervating than not (26) succeeding -- being blocked, not moving ahead. It is a (27) vicious circle. Failure breeds fatigue, and fatigue makes it harder to get to work, which (28) compounds the failure. We experience this tiredness in two main ways: as start-up fatigue and (29) performance fatigue. In the former case, we keep putting off a task that we are under some compulsions to (30) discharge. Whether

because it is too (31) tedious or because it is too difficult, we shirk it. And the longer we (32) postpone it, the more tired we feel.

Such start-up fatigue is very real, though it is not actually (33) physical, not something in our muscles and bones. The remedy is obvious, though perhaps not easy to apply: an exertion of will power. The moment I find myself turning away from a job, or putting it under a pile of other things I have to do, (34) I clear my desk of everything else and attach the objectionable item first. To prevent start-up fatigue, always tackle the most difficult job first.

Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle. (35) Here we are not reluctant to get started but it seems we cannot do the job right. Its difficulties appear insurmountable and however hard we work, we fail again and again. (36) The mounting experience of failure carries with it an ever-increasing burden of mental fatigue. In such a situation, I work as hard as I can -- then let the unconscious confidence take over.

Unit One Tr a ck 4-1-O L-l A. Jay and Elise are talking about an accident. Listen and check the correct picture. Jay: Come in here, Elise. You should see this show! Elise: What is it? Jay: It's called "The Titanic of the Sky." It's about the Hindenburg, a great engineering feat. Elise: The Hindenburg ... Jay: You know, that giant zeppelin that crashed in 1934. Thirty-five people died. Elise: Oh yeah, I remember now. It was flying from Germany to the United States. It crashed as it was landing. Jay: Right. It's so funny looking, don't you think? It doesn't look anything like the airplanes as have today. Elise: That's true. Why would people ride in a zeppelin anyway? It seems so dangerous. Jay: Well, some people called the Hindenburg "man's greatest achievement in flight." They thought it was safe, I guess. Elise: Who rode in it anyway? Jay: Mostly wealthy people. It accommodated between 30 and 40 passengers and crew. One person said it was like a "flying hotel." Eise: It sounds pretty great. Jay: Yeah, and it was fast. That's why people rode it. They wanted to get to their destination faster. Elise: Why didn't they just take a jet plane? Jay: Elise! You know they didn't have jets back then. Look, in 1934 it took five days to travel from Germany to the U.S. by ship. The zeppelin could do it in half that time. It was speedy. Elise: Well, maybe I'll sit down and watch a little bit. Maybe I'll learn something ... Tr a ck 4-1-O L-2 B. Listen again. How was the zeppelin described? Check your answers. Track 4-1-OL-3 A. Listen to the conversation and check the correct picture. T r a c k4-1-O L-4 Listen to another person talking about famous buildings in his country and fill in the blanks with information you hear. My country has two very famous buildings called the Petronas Towers. The buildings are made of glass, steel, and concrete. They were designed by an American architect, but he used a Malaysian style. They were finished in 1998, and they were the tallest buildings in the world at that time. Each tower has 88 floors, and is 452 meters high. I really like the Petronas Towers. They show both the modern and the traditional side of my country. T r a c k4-1-O L-5 A. Listen to a talk on controversies about modern buildings. Then fill in the blanks to complete the sentences. Modern buildings: We love them, We hate them The world-famous Louvre Museum in Paris is almost 500 years old, and it faced a very modern problem: There simply wasn't enough space for six million visitors each year. In 1989, American architect I.M. Pei designed a striking glass pyramid in the building's center to be a visitor entrance and shopping arcade. But he also started an angry debate. Some people felt his glass building was a piece of art, like the ones inside the museum. Others said it was just an ugly, modern mistake. Kyoto, Japan, is the country's ancient capital, and the heart of its culture. Its railroad station was too small for the millions of visitors. In 1997, the city completed a new station in a huge shopping center, right in the oldest part of the city. Designed by Hiroshi Hara, the building also contains a hotel and department store. Before it was built, critics said that the high, wide, modern building would destroy the city's traditional look. On the other hand, supporters said it would bring new life into the city center. Unit 1 Parents Part B Listening Tasks Passage 1 Dating with My Mother (Part One) Exercise 1 Listen to the recording and choose the right answers to the questions you hear. After 22 years of marriage,I have discovered the secret to keep love alive in my relationship with my wife, Peggy. I started dating with another woman. It was Peggy's idea. One day she said to me, "Life is too short, you need to spend time with the people you love. You probably won't believe me, but I know you love her and I think that if the two of you spend more time together, it will make us closer." The "other" woman my wife was encouraging me to date is my mother, a 72-year-old widow who has lived alone since my father died 20 years ago. Right after his death, I moved 2,500 miles away to California and started my own life and career. When I moved back near my hometown six years ago, I promised myself that I would spend more time with mom. But with the demands of my job and three kids, I never got around to seeing her much beyond family get-togethers and holidays. "Just the two of us." "I would like that a lot," she said. When I pulled into her driveway, she was waiting by the door

[al:全新版大学英语(第二版)听说教程2] Unit 1 Sports Part A] Listening Strategy Identifying Numbers Numbers appear very often in every kind of listening material. The ability to catch the exact numbers spoken in English is an important but difficult skill for a Chinese learner. A good way is to practice over and over again the pronunciation of the numbers, particularly the different ways to say thirteen and thirty, fourteen and forty, etc. It also helps to practice writing down the numbers you hear quickly in numerical forms, without translating them into Chinese. You're going to hear a passage about Michael Jordan, a retired American professional basketball player. Listen carefully and fill in the blanks with the missing numbers. Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time. He was born on Feb.17, 1963, in Brooklyn, New York. He is 1.98 meters tall and weighs 216 pounds. Jordan joined the Chicago Bulls team for the 1984 season. In the 1986 season he shot 3041 points, the third highest score ever. He was named NBA Slam Dunk Champion(扣篮冠军)in 1987 and won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1988, an honor repeated four times in the next ten years to 1998. Jordan guided his team to win six NBA championships during the 1990s, scoring 45 points during the sixth and last game of the 1998 NBA finals. In 1999, he was named the greatest North American athlete of the 20th century. Jordan left the NBA at the beginning of the 1993-1994 NBA season to pursue a career in baseball. Since his baseball game wasn't quite as good as his basketball games, he finally gave it up to rejoin the Bulls in 1995. Yet, after playing for five more years, he once again announced his retirement in 1999. But he returned for two more NBA games in XXXX as a member of the Washington Wizards. [ti:Unit 1 Part B] Listening Tasks A Conversation Why Don't You Join Me at the Gym Sometime? Exercise 1 Listen to the conversation and choose the right answers to the questions you hear. Peter: Hi Laura. Where are you heading with that big bag? Laura: Hi, Peter. I'm off to the gym. I've got to stay in shape, you know. I try to go three times a week, but I'm busy so I can't always make it. Peter: I know more women who work out than men. What's the main reason you work out? For your health, or to look good? Laura: To be honest, for both. With women, good looks are always a very important consideration. Peter: If they were honest, most men who work out would admit that they also do it to look better, and not merely for health reasons. Laura: How about you? Do you get any regular exercise? Peter: I do a lot of walking, for exercise and enjoyment sometimes ten to twenty kilometers at a time but I never go to the gym like you do. Laura: Well, walking is good exercise. How about sports? Peter: Not since my school days. I used to love playing baseball, but it's impossible to get enough people together for a game now. Mostly I just watch sports on TV.
