For grown-ups, an afternoon snooze(打盹) is often easier said than done. But many of us have probably experienced just how simple it can be to catch some sleep in a gently rocking hammock(吊床). By examining brain waves in sleeping adults, researchers reported in the June 21 issue of Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, that they now have evidence to explain why that is.

“It is a common belief that rocking causes sleep: we fall asleep in a rocking chair soon and, since ancient times, we cradle our babies to sleep,”said Sophie Schwartz of the University of Geneva. “Yet, how this works had remained a mystery. The goal of our study was made up of two parts: to test whether rocking does indeed improve sleep, and to understand how this might work at the brain level.”

Schwartz, Michel Mühlethaler, and their colleagues Laurence Bayer and Irina Constantinescu asked twelve adult volunteers to nap on a custom-made bed or “experimental hammock” that could either remain still or rock gently. All participants were good sleepers who didn’t typically nap and did not suffer from excessive sleepiness during the day. Each participant took two 45-minute afternoon naps, one with the bed still and one with the bed in motion, while their brain activity was monitored.

“We observed a faster transition to sleep in each and every subject in the swinging condition,” Mühlethaler said. “Surprisingly, we also observed a dramatic boosting of ce rtain types of sleep-related brain waves.”

More specifically, rocking increased the length of stage N2 sleep, a form of non-rapid eye movement sleep that normally occupies about half of a good night’s sleep. The rocking bed also had a lasting effect on brain activity, increasing slow brain waves and bursts of activity known as sleep spindles(纺锤体).

Schwartz and Mühlethaler say the next step is to find out whether rocking can improve longer periods of sleep and to find out whether it may be useful for the treatment of sleep disorders, such as insomnia(失眠).

41. What does the June 21 issue of Current Biology tell us according to Paragraph 1?

A. It is more difficult for grown-ups to fall asleep.

B. People today like to sleep in a rocking hammock.

C. Many people nowadays suffer from excessive sleepiness.

D. There comes the evidence to explain why rocking benefits people’s sleep.

42. What can we learn from Sophie Schwartz’s words?

A. Her team aimed to answer two questions.

B. The study is going to benefit babies a lot.

C. The study had been kept secret before finished.

D. People used to believe rocking was bad for sleep.

43. What can we learn about the study?

A. The participants were divided into two groups.

B. The participants had some problems in falling asleep.

C. Twelve adults and children were invited to take part in it.

D. The participants’ brain waves were examined during their nap.

44. What finding was beyond the researchers’ expectation?

A. The rocking seemed to improve participants’ sleep quality.

B. All the participants fell asleep faster in the swinging condition.

C. Some participants couldn’t fall asleep in the swinging condition.

D. Participants had a tendency to sleep excessively in the swinging bed.

45. What do Schwartz and Mühlethaler expect to figure out in the next research?

A. Whether swing can extend sleep time.

B. Whether swing can cause insomnia.

C. Whether swing can change brain waves.

D. Whether swing can benefit memory consolidation.

Bring any group of business owners or managers together, ask them the most effective way to promote their organizations, and you’ll get different answers. That comes as no surprise. But when it

comes to promoting a business, trying to find that single choice is rarely wise. You’ll see business owners and managers try radi o advertising. When that doesn’t produce the results they want, they’ll switch to sending direct mail. When that doesn’t create a jump in sales, they’ll buy cable TV commercials. When that falls short of their expectations, they’ll try a new online strategy… and it goes on and on, all with an air of desperation.

For most companies, the best approach is a mix of different channels, organized in ways that allows each to build upon the others. The channel that will work best in a given instance depends on a lot of factors, including the company itself, its audience, the message being conveyed, the environment, and many more.

Just because radio worked well for a company’s last effort doesn’t mean that cable TV wouldn’t be a better choice this time. Or maybe the right channel is direct mail. There’s no simple answer, because there are so many variables(可变因素). If your audience is broad and diverse, then maybe radio or newspaper advertising is the right choice. If you’re targeting a carefully defined group, such as former customers, direct mail or email will probably perform better.

There are two important lessons here. The first is not to focus on trying to find a single channel that will serve all of the company’s needs, because it just doesn’t exist. You’re more l ikely to find the real Holy Grail(圣杯). The second lesson is that before you spend the first dollar to promote your business, you need to do more than a little learning. You’ll really need to understand your customers, your marketplace, your competitors, and the environments in which you do business. And you need a good understanding of what makes one marketing channel right for one situation, but not another. 46. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Promote your business effectively B. The perfect ad for your business

C. Successful business owners and managers

D. The understanding of marketing

47. What is the best way to promote a business?

A. Using a channel that serves all of your needs.

B. Putting ads on various channels at the same time.

C. Creating an ad that appeals to all your customers.

D. Advertising on a channel available to consumers.

48. When it comes to choosing an ad for a business, we should . A. stay away from TV advertising B. choose it based on the specific situation C. advertise on the radio or in the newspaper D. choose it according to your customers’ needs

49. Before deciding on a marketing channel, you need to . A. ask for your customers’ advice

B. compare different advertising methods

C. realize the problems with your business

D. make research about all related factors

C Anyone complaining the loss of the true meaning of Christmas probably shouldn’t celebrate in China. Here, it’s mostly business as usual on the 25th. Vacation time won’t come until weeks later for China’s own winter holiday: Chinese New Year in mid-February. Santa exists primarily in malls, plus the

occasional grocery store or cafe. Some members of the younger generation have started playing Secret Santa, while others have bought artificial trees for their homes and offices.

There is, however, one Christmas tradition that’s definitely Chinese: Apples. The Chinese word for apple, pingguo, sounds a lot like the Chinese word for Christmas Eve, ping’an ye, and, as such, a tradition has formed. While Americans shell out(支付) lots of US dollars for high-tech presents like iPhones and Xboxes, Chinese friends simply exchange apples.

I’m in an overlit fruit market in Hangzhou. Christmas music—though in Mandarin —is playing over the store loudspeakers. Staffers are wearing green aprons and red Santa caps. This is the most Christmas spirit I’ve seen outside Starbucks.

It’s an odd time to grocery shop—Saturday night, just before closing —but the store is full. Santa-capped employees hand bags of fruit to a stream of customers.

I walk past many tiny, apple-sized boxes. Some boxes are clear, except for the outlines of cute cartoon bears with tiny plastic ears popping up on top. Some boxes proclaim “Merry Christmas!” and “Happy New Year!” in English on their sides. Some apples aren’t in boxes at all, but are rather all tied up in festive pink and purple cellophane(玻璃纸).

I need to choose a more traditional Western package of red and green cardboard and I call over an employee for help. He’s dressed in head -to-toe Santa Claus clothes, complete with black boots and a fake beard.

“Merry Christmas!” I say, briefly forgetting that this particular Kris Kringle might not understand me.

When a friend once told me to bring apples to my first-ever Chinese dinner party, it seemed like a cheap

off ering until I saw the price: Nearly 70 RMB (over $10) for just a few of them. That’s not unbearably expensive, but the cost is comparable to produce we’d consider exotic(异乎寻常的) in the US.

Meanwhile, in the fruit market in my neighborhood, a woman in a Santa cap is ringing me up at the cashier.

“Merry Christmas,” I say, once again forgetting about the language barrier. Then I realize I don’t even know how to say Christmas in Mandarin. Instead, I fall back on my old faithful phrase, one which I hope will evoke what I mean: A big smile and “Xiexie, zaijian”. 50. What does the article mainly talk about?

A. How people celebrate Christmas Day in China.

B. The Chinese people exchange apples at Christmas Eve.

C. The western tradition —exchanging apples spreads in China.

D. A Christmas tradition the author experienced in China.

51. In the 7th paragraph, the underlined phrase “Kris Kringle ” refers to . A. Santa Clause

B. a friend of the author

C. one employee

D. a stranger

52. According to the article, which statement is TRUE?

A. The author thinks that the true meaning of Christmas has lost.

B. Santa exists originally in shopping malls, occasionally at the grocery store or cafe.

C. The author can speak Chinese fluently with the cashier in a fruit market.

D. Staffers’ wearing green aprons and red Santa caps is the most Christmas spirit.

53. According to the passage, which of the following is not western Christmas tradition?

A. Buying artificial trees for each home.

B. Exchanging presents.

C. Choosing red and green packs.

D. Wearing green aprons and red Santa caps.

54. What attitude does the author hold towards the Chinese tradition of Christmas?

A. Indifferent.

B. Neutral.

C. Prejudiced.

D. Tolerant.

When someone walks into your life, a story begins. Pay attention. Who knows where it will go or how it will end?

I was a transplanted Southerner trying to take root in California, married only six months when my new husband got his first job teaching and coaching at Monterey High.

It would take almost 10 years for him to move from basic math courses and lower-division sports to teaching physics and coaching varsity basketball. But he was never in a hurry, never in a rush to do anything, really, but his best. All that mattered, he said, was not the status of a job, but how well and how diligently he performed it. While he was busy doing his “best,” I was busy having babies (three in five years) and going t o basketball games. That’s where I met David, at the games. I was 21. He was 16. It’s not like you could miss him, really.

David was a special education student at Monterey High, a big lumbering(步态笨拙的) bear(急性子) who loved basketball with all his being, but lacked the coordination(协调) to play.

Instead, starting in high school and continuing some 40 years, he showed up at every game as “team manager,” taking care of the balls and towels, slapping players on the backs if they did well, and giving grief, like it or not, if they missed shots or made the team look bad. He took special umbrage at lazy defense. “You’ve got to box out! Even I can do that! Want me to teach you?” He said. They would pretend to ignore him, but win or lose, they’d at least try a little harder to box out.

More than anything — maybe even more than basketball —David loved hugs. I’m not sure David ever knew my name. He called me “Mrs. Coach.” At every game, home or away, he’d spot me in the stands and come clomping up(聚拢) the bleachers, parting the crowd like the Red Sea to get a hug. When David hugged you, you knew you’d been hugged.

Later, in the years the coach was battling cancer, David never said much, just did his job as always, diligently and well. He hated swee ping the gym floor. Sweeping was a janitor’s job, not the team manager’s, he said. But if he caught the coach sweeping, as he sometimes did, he’d grab the broom and finish the job without a word.

The morning of the coach’s memorial service, someone took p hotos of preparations in the gym. Bleachers(露天看台) were pulled out, chairs were set up to seat the crowd. A thousand paper cranes(鹤) folded by his students flew in a “V” from the goal. And there was David, sweeping the floor.

That was long ago. I had not seen David in years. I heard he’d retired as t eam manager. I had remarried, moved away, was back in town for a visit, when I ran into him at Toasties, my favorite breakfast place.

He was sitting at the counter, older, grayer, big as ever, with his sweet wife, Stephanie. “David,” I said, tapping his s houlder, “remember me?” His eyes welled up as he rose from the counter and slowly engulfed(包围) me in a big bear hug. “Mrs. Coach,” he said, lifting me off my feet, “Mrs. Coach.”

When David hugs you, you still know you’ve been hugged.

A. loved teaching special education students

A. Question relentlessly(持续地).

B. Create a challenge.

C. Expect things to be fun.

D. Add variety to your life.

E. Connect to what you already know.

F. Absorb other people ’s enthusiasm.

The more I observe brilliant people, the more I notice that one distinguishing characteristic they have is immense curiosity. How does curiosity contribute to someone’s brilliance? It gives you a fresh perspective. Curious people can se e something that many other people can’t. It gives you fresh ideas. Using the term from The Medici Effect , curiosity gives you intersection experience where concepts from different fields collide with one another and produce fresh ideas. Since curious people get more intersection experience, they consequently get more fresh ideas.

Now that we’ve seen how important curiosity is, how can we develop it? Here are some tips:

61 Rather than expecting things to be boring, expect them to be fun. This small change in your mindset(心态) can make a big difference. Once you do it, it will be much easier for you to find the fun side of practically anything.

62 Often something se ems boring because it’s delivered poorly. That’s perhaps one thing that makes great teachers great: they can connect their students to the fun side of what they’re teaching. So one way to develop your curiosity is to watch the talks of those who are enthusiastic about their fields. Don’t just absorb their knowledge; absorb their energy too.

63 By creating a challenge, you will want to prove to yourself (and perhaps to others) that you can make it. One good way to do that is by creating a project: building something real out of what you learn. Another way is to create a contest with your friends to find out who can do something faster or better.

64 Things will be more exciting if you can connect what you’re learning to what you already know. Why? Because that improves your understanding of the world and allows you to see new possibiliti es you’ve never realized before.

65 Avoid boredom and find new possibilities by exploring new topics. Read books in new types. Meet people with different professions.

The core is simple, actually. All the advice above can be summarized to just one: make things fun.

Questioning can lead to search for an answer. If we are in habit of raising doubts as to if what we are told is true, we can find the correct answer and learn more.

Two years ago, our teacher offered us the answer to a difficult math problem in class. Although the answer seemed a little strangely, nobody but I doubted it. Think that his solution might be wrong, I carefully analyzed the problem and try to work it out in a different way. Half an hour earlier, I managed to find the correct answer. When I showed my answer to him, the teacher praised me of my independent thinking.

From this experience I have learnt that questioning can serve as a bridge that who helps us to seek the truth.

Dear Mr. Wang, Knowing that our library is going to buy books, I’d like to give some suggestions. What we need most are popular science books. Usually popular science books explain basic principles of nature in a simple and interesting way. They help us understand science subjects better and arouse our curiosity about scientific discoveries. In addition to reading for knowledge, we read for fun and inspiration. That is why I recommend another category of books:literary books. Classic works, written by masters, present great thoughts through fascinating stories and language. They not only offer us joy and excitement, but also encourage us to think critically. I’ll be glad if you can consider my recommendation. Yours sincerely, Li Yue

Secret codes (密码)keep messages private。Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer. People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.” 38 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitut e a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.” A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.”40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently. A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet. A Heroic Driver Larry works with Transport Drivers, Inc.
