People in different countries use different utensils for eating. While the majority of people use the conventional fork and knife, Chinese people use something quite different. They use utensils with which many of us are not familiar. They use two sticks known as chopsticks.

The chopsticks were first judged of as a simpler, more refined way of eating. Most food used in Chinese cooking is cut up in small bite size pieces. This way of cooking food lends itself to using chopsticks. The chopsticks allow a person to eat with only one hand, leaving the other one free for holding the bowl.

Chopsticks are made from many different kinds of materials . Most of the people in southern China use chopsticks made from bamboo or wood. Many wealthier people and families in China use chopsticks made of more precious materials, such as ivory or silver. These more elaborate kinds of chopsticks often may be passed down from one generation to the next .

The Chinese use their eating utensils to let others at the table know when they would like to be excused . When someone wants to leave the table, he lays the chopsticks across his bowl. The host then removes the chopsticks, and places them on the table. This means that the guest is free to leave.

It is not surprising that people hardly ever associate Britain with wine and ill fact it may astonish you to learn that grapes are grown in the open air in England and nearly 200,000 bottles of wine were sold in 1975. There is nothing very new in growing grapes in Britain, in spite of the climate. The Romans planted the first vines about AD 300 and for a long time people always drank home-produced wines. What destroyed the English wine industry was not so much a change in the climate as the fact that an English King, Henry II, inherited the Bordeaux area of France as part of his dominions during the twelfth century and the imported wine provided a great deal of competition. The English wine industry did not disappear, however, until the sixteenth century, when the monks, who had been the main producers in the meantime, had their estates taken away by Henry VIII. The new owners let the vineyards die out. But now English people, probably because of their memories of holidays by the Mediterranean, drink more wine than ever and the new industry is now developing at a modest but consistent rate.

Koalas look like teddy bears, but they are not bears at all. They are really animals called marsupials.

These animals carry their young in pouches, like kangaroos do .

Koalas live in the forests of Australia. They spend most of their lives in eucalyptus trees. They nearly never come downeven for a drink of water. In fact, their names means “no drink.” The koalas have a means of knowing which trees they can feed on safely. They eat each leaf the same way. First , they bite the leaf off the stem and then they chew it from base to top .

When a koala is born, it is less than an inch long. The baby crawls into the mother’s

breast right away and stays there for six months. After that, the baby rides piggyback or hangs on

between the mother’s front paws and legs. Young koalas stay with their mothers for at least a year.

The koala is a strong climber. Its paws end with sharp claws,so he can get a good grip on tree branches. Koalas sleep in the eucalyptus trees on most of the day and eat at night. Koalas may live alone or in small groups . Males sometimes use their sharp claws as weapons. Most of the time, koala families live together peacef ully.

Several regions in the world are subject [ to] storms which are so severe that they

[cause]damage on a tremendous scale. The regions are all located on the edges of great oceans. The[general]term for such severe storms is 'cyclone'. The term 'hurricane' is[defined ]for storms that occur in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Cyclones(龙卷风) and hurricanes(飓风) differ in one curious[way]: in a cyclone, the wind circulates in a clockwise direction; in a hurricane, the wind direction is counter-clockwise.

[But]cyclones and hurricanes have one ominous similarity. [In terms of]the damage they cause on land and at sea, they are identical.

Australia undergoes a number of cyclones every year along its northern coast, which faces Indonesia. The cyclones[occur mainly in December and January, the summer months in the southern hemisphere.

Usually the Australian cyclones don't cause great damage because Australia's northern territory has vast empty regions that are virtually [unpopulated].There are few coastal cities. When a cyclone[does]move inland from the sea, it usually blows itself out without striking any inhabited area. However ,in1917 the small city of Townville was severely devastated by a cyclone .there was a public outcry about it .people demand an adequate warning system . Ever since then the meteorrological bureau has regularly issued alarms in advance of every serious cyclone. Unti 6

A penguin is an unusual bird that stands upright on short legs and walks with an amusing, clumsy waddle.penguins live in the southern half of the world.Several kinds live on the frozen ice of the Antarcitc. others are located farther north in areas touched by cold ocean currents that originate in Antarctica.Penguins are popular attractions in zoos but are difficult to keep in captivity because they catch diseases easily.

Penguins lost the ability to fiy millions of years ago when their wings developed into flippers which serve as paddles in the warer. These flippers, along with webbed feet, make penguins fantastic swimmers and divers. Their short , dense feathers form a waterproof coat, and thick layers of fat keep them from cold weather.

Penguins eat fish, and spend much of their lives in Antarctic waters, but lay eggs and raise their young on land .While on land they make their nests inenormous colonies called rookery may contain as many as a million peguins. Most speciesmake their nests on bare ground, andlay their eggs in shallow hollws scraped in the icy dirt. Some of the species lay eggs in tunnels dug in the ground.

Jogging is becoming one of the fastest growing activities in the nation. More people are starting jog each year. This, however, is a recent occurrence. It was not long ago that joggers were rare sight. Some people thought that they looked quite strange. As more people began jogging the sight of them became more common. There are many reasons for a person to take up jogging. First, it is a good form of exercise. This is because it involves the use of many parts of the body. The exercising of the heart is of great benefit. This is one of the most important parts of the human body. If the heart does not get the needed exercise, serious problems can occur.

Another reason for jogging is for enjoyment. Besides being good for people, it can also be very much fun.

Part of the fun of jogging comes from the opportunity it provides for meeting other people who enjoy it.

One thing that should be considered when a person takes up jogging as a form of exercise of enjoyment is that it is not for everyone. People should first check with their doctors and be prepared to find another form of exercise if jogging is not recommended.

Every four years, athletes from all over the world compete in the Olympics. Each country sends teams of its finest athletes to participate in the games. At every Olympic game, old records for speed and distance are broken as throngs of spectators watch in amazement.

The Olympics take place in a different country each time they are held. Years before the start of a new Olympics, the host country starts getting ready for the games. A great deal of planning and money goes into building an Olympic Village, a city with buildings to house the teams. Stadium, tracks, pools gyms, rinks, and rings are all carefully sketched .

The Olympics open with a bright splash that is rarely seen these days. At first the leader of the host country is welcomed into the stadium by the head of the Olympic committee . Then a fantastic march begins. As the bands play, the teams enter the stadium. Each team wears official Olympic dress and marches behind its flag. The Greek team leads the march in honor of the first Olympic games which were held by the Greeks. The team of the host country marches last.

Human beings act in a different way from that of animals just because they can speak while animals cannot. Even the cleverest animals cannot do things which to us seem very simple and which small children, as soon as they learn to talk, would be able to do.

A German scientist, who performed experiments for many years with big apes, found that his apes could use his sticks as tools to pull down bananas which they could not reach. But they only used the stick to get a banana when both the banana and the stick were in view at the same time. If the banana was in front of them and the stick was behind them, they could not use the stick. They could not keep the banana long enough in mind to look around and then pick up the stick and use it.

The reason for this is clear. We have words for banana and stick which help use to think about the se things when they are not in sight . Even a small child knowing the words "banana" and "stick" has an idea of their relationship and is able to think "stick" together with "banana" and to remember this long enough to pick the stick from behind and use it on the banana.

unable to speak, animals cannot keep their knowledge of things for long. That is why they often interrupt one line of action to do something else and later forget it completely. Human beings, on the other hand, use language and are able to do one thing continuously.

Not all pain sufferers are alike . Some people with mild shoulder soreness, for example, simply wait a few days for the stiffness to go away . Others consult the family doctor. Still others may turn to acupuncture (针灸). Acupuncture has been practiced in China for more than 2,600 years, but in all that time no one thought to develop a portable gizmo (小发明) that could replicate (重复) the sensation of needles gently, piercing one’s skin to neutralize pain.

Now an Australian device company, acuhealth Ltd. has developed a hand held, needle free device that combines the ancient art of acupuncture with advanced electronics. The product, named acuhealth and invented by Dr. Dean Richards, uses a nice-volt battery to produce mild electric impulses, which the user applies to certain “tension-relief points”on his body. It does not puncture or penetrate the skin in any direction .

The device provides relief from general pain, stress, sore backs and headaches.

To find the pressure points on their bodies, acuhealth users consult an accompanying book-let and use the sonar probe (探针) built into the product.

As the plane circled over the airport, everyone felt that something was wrong . The plane was moving unsteadily in the air. At that moment, the air-hostess appeared . She looked very pale, but was quite calm. Speaking quickly but almost in a whisper, she informed everyone that the pilot had fainted and asked if anyone of the passengers knew anything about machines or at least how to drive a car. After a moment’s hesitation, a man got up and followed the hostess into the pilot’s cabin.

Moving the pilot aside, the man took his seat and listened carefully t o the instruction that were being sent by radio from the airport below. The plane was now dangerously close to the ground, but to everyone’s joy, it soon began to climb. The man had to circle the airport several times in order to become familiar with the controls. But the danger had not yet passed. The terrible moment came when he had to land. Following instructions, the man guided the plane towards the airfield. It shook violently as it touched the ground and then moved rapidly across the field, but after a long run it stopped safely. Outside a crowd of people who had been watching anxiously rushed forward to congratulat e the “pilot” on a perfect landing.

Steve wanted to ask Jenny to his school’s Spring Dance, but he imagined that she had plenty of dates and wouldn’t be interested in going with him anyway. When his friends inquired about his plans for the dance, Steve pretended to be different , but they urged him to consider going to the dance. Steve lastly decided that he would make the effort to ask Jenny, but felt sure that he would be turned off .

In the following afternoon, as Steve was delivering papers, he could see Jenny sit on the front steps. She seemed to be waiting for someone. Steve grew more eager as he approached her, pretending to be busy with his newspaper. By the time he managed to say hello, his courage had failed, and he had given up the idea of asking her to the dance.

By his surprise, Jenny suddenly struck up a conversation, and a few minutes later she asked him to the Spring Dance being held in her school. The turn of events was so startling to Steve that, for a few moments, he could only stare in total amazement.
