Mount Taranaki in New Zealand is to be granted(授予)the same legal rights as a person, becoming the third geographic feature in the country to be granted a “legal personality”. Eight local Maori tribes(部落)and the government will share guardianship of the sacred mountain on the west coast of the North Island. The local people view it as an ancestor and family member.

The new status of the mountain means if someone abuses or harms it, it is the same legally as harming the tribe. Little said the agreement offered the best possible protection for the mountain, which is becoming an increasingly popular tourist attraction after Lonely Planet named the Taranaki region the second best place to visit in the world last year.

“As a New Plymouth local I grew up under the gaze of the mountain so I’m particularly pleased with the respect given to local people and the legal protection and personality given to the mountain,” Little said.

As part of the agreement the New Zealand government will apologize to local Maori for their behavior against the mountain, although local tribes will receive no financial or commercial payment.

Gerrard Albert, who negotiated legal personhood for the Whanganui river earlier this year after a 140-year fight, said all Maori tribes regarded themselves as part of the universe, at one with and equal to the mountains, the rivers and the seas.

The new laws being introduced honored and reflected their world view, Albert said, and were setting an example for other Maori tribes in New Zealand to follow in Whanganui and Mount Taranaki’s footsteps. “We can trace our genealogy(宗谱)to the origins of the universe,” said Albert. “And therefore, rather than us being masters of the natural world, we are part of it.”

While most of the pig species are domestic(家养的), some live in the wild. Even though pigs feed on almost everything that comes in their way, domestic ones require a well-balanced diet.

Pigs feed on both plant and animal matter. Apart from eating foods, like flowers, fruits, leaves, grass, roots, mushrooms and tree barks, wild pigs also feed on garbage, worms and dead insects as well. Even nuts are eaten by these animals. It has also been observed that, sometimes, newborn pigs are eaten by their mother. In short, they are considered as omnivores.

In the wild, they feed on everything, according to their needs. In case of domestic pigs, it is very important to understand their food requirement, and provide them with a proper diet. They need foods rich in energy, so that they can grow rapidly. It is always better to feed them with a concentrated grain diet, which is low in fiber, but rich in protein supplements(增补物). So, pigs have to be fed with farm grains, like corn, oats, barley, and wheat. Corn is considered one of the best foods for pigs. They can also be fed with vegetables, like carrots and potatoes.

However, never forget to supplement their diet with vitamins and proteins. While meat is the main source of protein for pigs, it is not recommended for domestic ones. This is due to the risk of diseases which may pass on to pigs through meat. So protein supplements are recommended for such pigs. The protein level in their diet must increase as they grow. Calcium(钙)supplements are also recommended for pigs. Moreover, pigs need a regular supply of fresh and clean water, as water shortage may affect their survival. Care must be taken to clean the food and water troughs(槽)daily.

In short, pigs need high-energy foods, which are low in fiber, along with a supply of clean and fresh water. This is only a brief overview about the diet of pigs. It will be better to consult a vet for more information about the feeding requirement of specific pig breeds.

I was born an albino(患白化病的人)in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1945.No one in my family had ever known what an albino was, what it meant to be an albino and what had to be done differently because I was an albino. My parents, relatives and friends treated me just like they treated everybody else. That was just about the best thing they could have done. It gave me a leg up on trusting myself, so when trouble came along, I could deal with them.

Like most albinos, I had terrible eyesight. My grades suffered until eventually I overcame being self-conscious and realized it was okay to ask to sit in the front of the classroom so I could see the blackboard better. People stared at me when I held reading material right at the tip of my nose so I could see it well enough to read. Kids would tease me, asking if I was joining the circus(马戏团)and calling me “Whitey”. Even when I was eight or nine, movie-theater clerks started asking me to pay adult prices because I “looked older.” The worst part for me was that because my eyesight was so bad, I couldn’t play sports very well.

I didn’t give up trying, though. I shot hoops every day and played whiffle ball in summer. And I studied harder. Eventually, I got better at school and loved it. By the time I got to college I was double majoring, going to summer school and burying myself in every kind of after-class activity I could find. I tried my best to make “albino” a positive word. I couldn’t see well enough to play sports, but with a solid education and the drive to do it, I could make a living involved in something I loved.
