There are several aspects of language and speaking that I would like to focus on today for considerations to allow you to improve moving forward.

First, the area of pronunciation and delivery. Some of you, especially when you are nervous, should focus more on diction and pronunciation. Specifically, try not to swallow your articles like "a" and "the" or little connectors like "of" Take a breath, take your time. and let each word be sounded. Similarly, make sure you sound final consonants, especially the "-ed" in your past tenses. This is one of the things that Chinese, even the good ones, the really good ones, when you start speaking quickly and passionately, forget. So, pay a lot of attention and be conscious that that's something that you may know that the grammars, grammatical and structural rules and not sound that final consonant or you may be a little fuzzy on what the past tenses, but that some- thing that makes a big difference in a competition,

Finally, in the area of pronunciation for all you students, not just the contestants here today, please, the word "the", th-: put your tongue between your teeth. It's not "da," it's "the"; it's not "der." it's "their"; it's not "utter." it's "other." You can do this, you can do this, Practice on the way to class, practice in the shower, practice wherever but don't say "da," it's "the."

Second category of feedback is I want to talk very briefly about lexicon and vocabulary. As I mentioned, I felt that your use of lexicon in today's presentation was quite sophisticated and showed a lot of preparation. Most of you may have noticed that in the contemporaneous, spontaneous remarks and questions, the level of vocabulary came down a notch or two. That's very natural: some- thing that we all have to work on. But there were a couple of I think. there's three examples that I'd like to share with you to take home to work on. Number one, since the topic was ecology, when you talk about living in harmony with da zaren, is it "the nature" or "nature'? Nature! I's not "the nature"! "The nature" is shenrnashenmadongxi de xingzhi, so, that was like one of those errors that. umm, came up because of the theme of the speech, but that's something you can remember right now, "Live in harmony with...nature."' Second, some small things that I noted, some of you messed up "emphasized" with "emphasis"---it's a common mistake. And one of the contestants was talking about how important it was to be aware of the environment and that we should generate awareness of environment to help us think of ways to improve it, and she, I think it was she, said "we should get a consensus of the environment," I think she probably meant "sense." "get a sense of the environment" as an awareness. So, little things like that. Be careful semantically. If you reach the upper levels of language, it's very easy to choose a wrong word and I guess my advice for you would be, "When in doubt, check a dictionary for nuance and proper usage." because when you're in the lower levels you're not using those fancy words. But when you get up in the upper levels, like today, they're very important.

Finally, my last category of feedback for you is in the area of discourse and organization. This is very important in speaking contests, it's very important when you're translating at the upper levels, and it's important in adult life when you're working in the world of work where you're no longer talking simply about yourself and your family, but other things, issues. Today's contestants demonstrated a wide variety of rhetorical styles in their prepared speeches. Many of the candidates showed a sophisticated use of

linguistic register, and register is, as you know. using language that is appropriate for a specific purpose for a specific social context. The reason l mention register is that for learners of English as a second language, the higher the register, the more difficult it is to speak accurately, coherently, and persuasively. Right? So, today, one of the contestants made a very insightful remark and said, I quote, "The higher level of English I speak, the more mistakes I make." Remember that'? Actually. What she meant by this was that she was having trouble communicating sophisticated ideas and arguments in English without making errors in grammar or usage. University students learning English can improve their ability to speak naturally in high registers and high level of discourse and can sustain a high level of discourse by doing a few things and these are the three pieces of advice I will leave for you before I conclude my remarks. So, this is advice teachers and students for how to build that competency and high level of discourse.

Number one: Read texts that represent a high level of discourse. Soak up that language. But, remember that written text has a discourse that is separate from spoken discourse. Some of you were speaking today in very. kind of written-prose language, and you may not want to do that in the future.

Number two, piece of advice: Make a tape recording of yourself talking about abstract topics or complex topics and then go back and listen to it and listen to how it sounds: if it's cohesive and coherent'? Are there errors? Then go back, practice again, and do it a second time like editing a written text but, in fact, it's a spoken text. You will hear what you're doing that could be improved, even you, and of course if you have teachers, that's even better, but you, yourself will hear.

Finally, my last piece of advice for you is that you should practice building. If language, if spoken language, was like a house you should practice building the house brick by brick, storey by storey, so you all can do basic sentences now, clearly. And, most of you are pretty good at building paragraphs, but some of you are not yet perfect house builders in terms of discourse and organization. So you want to practice writing compound and complex sentences, and then weave those together into paragraphs and you'll weave those paragraphs into the full spoken text. Weave them together, push yourself to go for the discourse and woven nature so that not only the thought flows, but it's coherent. And. I think you'll agree with me, that some of the most compelling speeches that we heard today displayed this type coherence and sort of natural progression of ideas, lf you do that, there's no doubt in my mind that you can progress at this area.

In conclusion, I would like to quote one of our question masters, who said today that, "Life is a journey, not the arrival." that you focus on the journey not the arrival. Language learning is lifelong. Lifelong. So, as you move forward, language learning enjoy the journey.

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, excellent contestants, itsreally a greathonorandpleasure to be here as a judge for this English feast of speech competition.

I think all contestants did a great job today, and I?d like to express my thanks to everyone who has Made a great contribution to organizing the competition and has made it a fantastic success. So let?s give a big round of applause to all of them. I have been really enjoying this contest thoroughly, especially because all the contestants have approached the topic from different perspectives. All speeches have been well researched, with good thoughts as well as interesting ideas. I am very pleased to see that most of you delivered your speech with good pronunciation, clear articulation, with good eye contact and a proper manner. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to offer you some little tips about public English speech competition.

So, what I here want to suggest to those contestants, when you preparing your speech, whatever the prepared speech and the impromptu speech, do not just focus on the whole picture of your work, instead pay a attention to the small details, as well as the intonation. On top of that, I would like to speak with those who always get somewhat a little bit nervous once they stand on the stage to deliver a public speech.Speaking of this, I would like to share with you a little bit about myself. When I was at my high school and I often blushed on my face when I stand even in the front our class, let alone the city competition later on. And one of my foreign teachers give my some tips. That?s what I want to share with you right now. when you feel nervous, especially before get on the stage, take a deep breath and tell yourself in your heart that I am the best in the whole universe. Then, by the time you speak, what you should bear in mind is that don?t ever get direct contact with same part area of audience all the time. Remember you are here to serve the whole listeners with your point of view, so change your eyesight to different audience.

I always like to sa y that ”Life

is a journey”. Language learning is a life long experience and we never finish learning, especially for the English language which is so alive and ever changing. So as you

move forward with your language learning make sure you enjoy every moment of

your journey.

You really have been very creative in trying to clear out your

point. But this time, it was very clearly stated what would be required of you in the

speech. Therefore, it is very important to understand what is required of you and what

is demanded of you in a competition.

In today’s competition, I think you are a little

too hasty in your preparation for the speech. For instance, as your topic is “a word that

changes the world” ,you …d better show your point out straightly. Otherwise how

could you grab the audiences? attention to your speech. So next time, you just read

carefully about the instructions before you start making a speech. And try to

understand every word clearly and correctly.

I think the basic rules of communication are universal,

and apply across languages and cultures. Say what you mean, and say it in as clear,

direct, and simple a manner as possible. And when you are talking or writing to

someone from a different country, don?t be afraid to say the obvious thing first.

I have to mention in this competition that you still need to

improve your pronunciatione specially rhythm and sentence stress. You need to

improve your vowels. It is still very important. I think that?s all I want to say. Thank

you very much for your speech.

I am very much impressed by the speech you have made. To

compare with the speech of others, you really did a great job. I feel good about this.

First of all, in your prepared speech, you are more to the point and your English is more natural. Secondly, your point is very impressive. And you provide a lot of

examples to support your speech.

Talking about your impromptu speech, I think you are quite

sensitive to answer questions.Your answer is quite logical and I like it.

It's worth metioning that you give us a

fantastic speech with an impressive beginning, ending or the free talk. Furthermore,

you are enthusiastic throughout the speech. You made good eye contact with the

audience and used appropriate body language in the speech. .You made your speech

more wonderful and more perfect with your body language. You looked cool!

We all know a language is a means and the purpose is communication. What really matters is the courage to come and participate in the

contest. I should learn from all of you. However, there are still some problems and

much room for improvement. I am going to put forward some suggestions on how to

do better in the future.

Have you thought about this question: When you prepare a speech, there is something

more important than language. What is it? It is idea. Ideas come before the language.

If you don?t know what to say, if you have no ideas, what is the use of the language?

So, you must think, and think again and decide what you want to say and then

organize your ideas. One point I want to emphasize is that you should have your own

approach, your own original ideas. If you only borrow things from others or copy

things from some ready materials or textbooks, your speech is bound to fail. In this

contest we hear some expressions again and again. Then, we know you have been

borrowing things from the same source. To quote from one of the topics for

impromptu speech: “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” This is a

quotation from Einstein. If we want the world to move forward, we need imagination,

and we need creativity.

When you prepare your impromptu speech, the most important

thing is to be clear about the topic you have chosen. If you miss the point, however

fluent and expressive you are, you get a poor mark. For example, there is a topic: To

err is human; to forgive is divine. When you choose this topic, you should know it

means everybody makes mistakes, but if you are able to forgive other people?s

mistakes, then you are a better being. The emphasis is the second half. If you only talk

about how to do your best to correct your mistakes, you miss the point. I feel this part

is the most difficult part of the contest. You have to be quick for you don?t have much

time to prepare; you have to be knowledgeable for you must understand the meaning

of the topic properly.

So, you must have realized the contest has become more demanding,. You need to have something more creative. And next year, you would be

expected to be at a new and higher stage.

I am sure everyone would like to join with me in saying that the Organizing Committee has chosen a very good theme for the prepared speech, that is, “Does one plus one equal two?” which is very thought provoking and leaves plenty of room for your imagination. As I said at the very beginning, we have been enjoying the contest thoroughly and tremendously because, the 92 contestants approached the theme from different perspectives, well researched, with good thoughts as well as interesting ideas. And we are very pleased to see, most of you delivered your speech with good pronunciation, clear articulation, with good eye contact and a proper manner. You have also demonstrated your remarkable analytical ability. But there is one thing I would like to mention. With a little bit more sense of humor, you might have entertained your audience more。

One thing that impresses us most is that some of you are very fluent speakers of English. But one point that I?d like to make is, fluency doesn?t mean haste. Some of you spoke very fast, or too fast, that the speaker himself got carried away; but the audience got lost. We?ve also noticed some

small pronunciation problems, such as, we heard some contestants say, /tek'n?l?d?/, /'en?d?/, instead of /tek'n?l?d?I/, /'en?d?I/ for “technology” and “energy”. And we heard some say

/'t?aIn?r/, /'k?:n?r/, instead of /'t?aIn?/, /'k?:n?/. I haven?t got time to check with my American friends yet if they would identify that with the American accent. I very much doubt it。

Compared with the prepared speech, generally speaking, your performance was somewhat weaker in your impromptu speech. It?s not surprising, because that is a very tough and challenging task and you are only given 15 minutes to get yourself prepared to talk about a given topic. I must say all those topics for the impromptu speech are very well-designed, though some of them are more straightforward, while others do need a bit more hard thinking。

Quite a number of you were given quotations. S o, when you face those quotations, I?m afraid you have to interpret it and to get the message of it first. And then you put your understanding and your arguments into a logical order and deliver it to inform or to persuade the audience。

Here I would like to pick up two of them to help drive my point home. Look at this one, which is a quotation from Alvin Toffler. It reads, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn。” Wh at does it mean? What message does the writer intend to get across? I wonder if you have heard of this phrase —“lifelong learning”. Have you? Please put up your hand if you have. Oh, that?s good. Then you have the basic knowledge to interpret this quotation. Why 21st century? Because in this century, the world is changing fast. One?s learning no longer ends up with the completion of one?s schooling time, and one?s learning should go on throughout one?s whole life. One of the aims of education in college should be to make the students learn how to learn. And then when you step into this fast changing world, you?ll be able to carry on learning to face and adapt to the

ever-lasting changes. You will know how to learn to catch up, to update and to enrich yourself. Therefore, if you didn?t have this knowledge, if you didn?t know this new concept in education, it would be difficult for you to interpret “learn, unlearn, and relearn” from the quotation。

And let?s look at the other one. “We reached the Moon and co me back, but we find it troublesome to cross our own street and meet our neighbors。” So what message does the writer want to convey here? Why are the Moon and the street and neighbors mentioned here? What?s the connection? Isn?t it something about establis hing human relations, and about advocating communication between people? We reached the Moon, having covered such a long distance, however, it is so difficult for us to reach, to contact, to talk, to communicate with our neighbors just across the road. Her e “street” could also refer to the boundary between two countries. However, this message wasn?t reflected in your performance。

I just want to comment on those two examples, because I believe, if you accumulate more knowledge of life and keep an eye on wh at?s going on beyond your campus, you will be able to understand, to get the message from those quotations。

Now I would like to make a suggestion. I think all the contestants here today should give your coach a big hug and say a large “Thank you!” for all the support and guidance they?ve given you and all the way they?ve accompanied you up to this stage. You can do it now, or you can do it when you are alone with your coach, but you must do it. We should learn to appreciate. In this case, appreciate all t he efforts your coach has made to help you, to lead you to today?s success。

As judges and question masters, it is a great pleasure for us to be engaged with this great event. Being here for three days has also made us reflect on our English language teaching and also reflect on education as a whole。

And I?m sure when you came here to Beijing, to the semi-final, you came with passion, with enthusiasm and determination. I hope, when you leave this event, you would go back being a more confident individual, and being a more knowledgeable person after your answering all those quizzes and questions, which are also very well-designed。

And I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all the contestants the best of luck and great success in your future。

通常我们往往就忽略了其实还需要提出常识考虑下的一些不同观点(address some of the opposing views that would also seem logical),逐一进行解析和反驳(analyze and refute them one-by-one),以加深听众对我们见解的认同和印象。 1。我们演讲当中需要与听众叙述某种主要现象的,那么可以考虑提出一些其他次要现象,并说明为何它们会排在次要位置,以此来突出、强调咱们主要内容的作用: -You may have noticed that there are other factors that may have contributed to this trend... 。。 -As many of you have already probably guessed, there are other ways to look at this problem... 。。 -I can't deny that there are also at least three other things to consider besides the main point I've just outlined... 。。 -Other related factors to ponder would include... 。。 -And on this same note, we would need to look at some other examples... 。。 -Let's take a moment and look at some other likely solutions... 。。 *and I'm going to go over them with you one-by-one. We will see why they are trivial in that they have little to no effect on the overall outcome. 比如在谈到婚恋概念时(concepts about marriage and love),我们希望强调婚前同居的利害对比(comparison and contrast between the pros and cons about cohabitation),可以将两方相关因素作个直接比较:-Many of you may think that cohabitation is good because it'll allow you to practice marriage before you sign the papers, but I'm here to tell you... 。。 -You may think that this is less than beneficial, but it could very well be the opposite... 。。 -When you look at...you think...and I'm here to point out to you that you can succeed better by... 。。 -Pros, on one hand you have...cons, on the other hand, you're worried that...

They were escaping blazing forest fires of epic proportions. It was the largest evacuation in Saskatchewan history. Thousands of people were on the move, all of them in uncertain circumstances, not knowinghow quickly they would return home. For a few young women, these circumstances had an added dimension of uncertainty. Theywere in the late stages of pregnancy. These young women were living as displaced persons far from home, without the supplies theyhad gathered for their new baby. Thankfully, for all concerned, healthy babies were delivered in hospitals close by with medicalstaff to give assistance. We are privileged to live in a province where people come together. That can be difficult whenstress levels are high. And so I salute the evacuees, and the firefighters, and the troops, and the Red Cross, and thelocal officials, the mayors and chiefs. Those who shared money, food and supplies, those who prayed for an ending to this situation. All rose to the occasion. Two thousand years ago, a public official named Caesar Augustus issued a decree that all peopleneeded to be accounted for. It affected the entire Roman world. Everyone needed to beregistered. Many people were on the move, with primitive travel arrangements, not

还有一句话,不仅对想对我自己说,也想对每一个在努力的人说:the life we want, there is noshortcut.

In the past three decades, I've given more than 1,200 presentations to upward of a million people. Many say the ability to speak before large crowds is innate, but I'm not sure that's true. I didn't do much public speaking in the first 20 years of my life. Our school didn't encourage students to speak in front of crowds, so I graduated from high school and started university thinking I didn't possess the tools to connect with large audiences. Like so many other things in life —including business acumen —speaking skills can betaught, enhanced, and perfected. Poor lines of communication or a bad presentation can lead to lost opportunities. Conversely, great public speaking skills can land you a new job or client, motivate your team, and even turn a bad situation around.

Hello again, ladies and gentlemen! Nowadays, we live in a technology-driven society. On the one hand, technology helps us a lot. Like today, our contest uses all kinds of modern technology to help facilitate the process. On the other hand, however, we human beings have the tendency to be addicted to modern technology. No one knows this better than those “hi-tech” parents. And they are actually sending their children to “non-hi–tech” schools. I think the main concerns behind this decision are the following t wo: First, “hi-tech” parents want their children to return to the real human world; and second, they want their children to return to nature. For the first concern: return to the real human world. Well, when the little boy was so focused on the computer screen, he is actually isolated from the real human world around him. But if we take the computer away from him and let him interact with his peers and play with his peers, he can actually learn how to gain emotional control of his own emotion, and he can have a better understanding of other people’s needs and rights. And that is what we called “EQ”, which is a very important element if you want success in life. For children to get back to real world, there is another element involved: that is nature. Well, it is true that a child can appreciate a picture of rose from a computer screen, but he will not be able to touch its petal; he will not be able to smell its fragrance. Without a computer, we actually give the child a chance to go back to nature. He can feel the coldness of the running water; he can hear the birds sing; he can hold a flake of snow in the palm of his little hands. Nature is not only the source of joy, it is, actually, more importantly, the source of imagination and inspiration for creativity. For example, the invention of airplane, it’s actually the result of observation of birds in nature. In conclusion, if I were one of those “hi-tech” parents, I will make the same choice for my child, because after all, modern technology is just a tool. It is our human mind that is responsible for all the creation and all the imagination that we have in this world. Well, Shakespeare never knew how to use a computer in his entire life, but he still wrote the beautiful plays in our world;
