一、阅读理解

1. Last year, my boyfriend suggested that I should run the London marathon(马拉松), and I laughed. He laughed too, but he laughed too long and too loud. That made me think. I realized that he didn't believe that I could do it. That made me angry, and determined, Now he knows that I

can!

Training wasn't easy, but I kept going. I didn't need special training but I did need to buy very good shoes. Each day, I went a little further. By the end of three months, I was running five days a week. Some- times in the evenings I ran 10 km; on Sunday mornings, I sometimes ran about 30 km. I used to come home, have a shower and eat my breakfast. I felt wonderful!

On the day of the race in London, I lined up with about 30,000 other runners. The faster runners were at the front, while slower runners like me were placed further back. In that way, the professional runners and club runners were not slowed down by the amateurs(业余爱好者).

At first, there were so many runners close together that we were almost falling over each other. We could only run very slowly but that was a good thing because it meant that we didn't rush off too quickly. Gradually the runners spread out and there was more space. There were thousands of people watching us along the route and they cheered and clapped everyone, even the slowest runner. It was wonderful!

For the first 10 km I felt very happy and my legs felt very comfortable. However, at 15 km I got a pain in my side and running became difficult, but I kept going and the pain disappeared. At the 30 km mark, I felt extremely tired, and wanted to stop, but I kept on going. I covered another 3 km and then I began to feel better again.

By the time I reached the 35 km mark, I knew I was going to get to the end of the course. Somehow that confidence made me feel lighter and faster and it seemed as if my legs flew over the last few kilometers. I passed hundreds of slower runners, some of whom had passed me earlier, and I felt wonderful! As I came round the last bend(弯道)and saw the finishing line, I could see three runners ahead of me. I raced past all of them to finish the race in just under four hours. The winner had completed the race in 2 hours and 10 minutes, but I didn't care! I had run 42 km and completed my first marathon!

2 I left home to support my sister in her efforts to present a music festival. She lives on the other side of the world, and I went to visit her, not wanting to leave and feeling like I was leaving home against my will. However, I wanted to show her my support because she is my only sister.

So I boarded the plane in mid-August, and hated the long flight. I arrived, tired and hungry. I had left my husband of 2 years, alone, in our old New Orleans house.

I was all set and ready to perform for my sister for the music festival on Sunday morning when I received a call from Chicago. The hurricane was predicted to hit our city, and many people had already evacuated, but my husband chose to stay behind. He could not get a call to me on the other side of the world, but he could call his cousin in Chicago. He gave his cousin a message for me, that he would be just fine, and not to worry.

As the day wore on, I finally took the stage in front of hundreds of Europeans, and I realized, thanks to CNN, that New Orleans was under water.

I performed, hoping that my husband would survive. And I performed perfectly. The audience stood and applauded. I left the stage and went straight to the TV. I saw the street sign near my home, of Humanity Street, but nothing below it, except water.

In the days that followed, I found out that my house, my car, my clothes, my furniture,

eve rything that I’d left behind was gone…but not my husband. He survived by riding on the rear bumper(后保险杠) of a VW bus, holding on to the overhead luggage rack, in the pouring rain, down the highway from New Orleans, half-way to Baton Rouge. The rest of the journey was a long walk, but he survived.

By the first week of September, I flew back to the Baton Rouge airport, and hugged my husband. Since then, our relationship has grown deeper; we have completely rebuilt our house, bought a new car, bought new furniture and new clothes and joined an inspirational, spirit-filled community.

3. Hail(冰雹) is solid precipitate(沉淀物) that forms within thunderstorms. Hailstones are sometimes found containing sand, leaves, nuts and insects. There are even reports of hail containing small turtles, baby crocodiles and frogs! All of them have been sucked into the storm by tornadoes and subsequently enveloped in ice through repeated updraft currents(上升气流).

Hailstones generally begin forming as seeds of small frozen raindrops or soft ice particles known as graupel (雪丸). If graupel falls through the cloud and gets into an updraft part of a thunderstorm, it mixes with water drops and ice particles that will freeze around it as it rises, like layers of an onion. These ice-stones are carried into the tops of the cloud, gaining mass as they rise. Somewhere up there, they become too heavy for the updraft to carry and so fall towards the ground. As they fall, the outside layer melts to a clear layer.

Larger hail can fall at a speed of over 100 mph, thus causing damage and injuries to almost anything. Pea to penny-sized hail can cause light damage to trees and vegetation and possibly cause minor injuries to people and animals. Tennis ball to baseball-sized hail is obviously damaging. It can cause severe damage to crops and produce life-threatening injuries to people and animals.

Deaths caused by hail are rare in the US with the last known fatality occurring in March 2000 in Lake Worth, Texas. A young man died from head injuries after being stuck by a softball-sized hailstone. Deaths and injuries are more common in other parts of the world where people live in poorly constructed buildings with little protection.

If caught in a hailstorm while driving, attempt to stop immediately or pull into a nearby safe place; otherwise, the effect of the hail will be maximized. Try to drive and park the vehicle in the direction of the hail so that it is hitting the front of the vehicle. Windscreens are generally strengthened and can withstand larger impacts than side and back windows. This will lessen any damage from flying glass to both people and equipment in the vehicle.

1.What makes some hail contain something unusual?

A.Air currents.

B.Strong storms.

C.Thunderstorms and tornadoes.

D.Tornadoes and updraft currents.

2.What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?

A.How hail comes into being.

B.What graupel is made up of.

C.What different layers of hail look like.

D.How graupel mixes with water and ice

3.What does the underlined word “fatality” in Paragraph 4 probably refer to?

A.Frightening event.

B.Unexpected damage.

C.Serious injury in a disaster.

D.Death resulting from a disaster.

4.What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?

A.To urge people to stay away from hailstorms.

B.To warn drivers of the potential dangers during hailstorms.

C.To offer guidance to drivers on how to prevent hail damage.

D.To advise people to purchase necessary protective equipment.

4. That woman carried a new blanket over her arm. Wordlessly, she gave it to me.

“Is it finished?” I asked.

She shook her head. “No. It is ready,” she replied. I handed her the money and took the blanket.

“It is beautiful, so skillfully woven (编织),” I said to my mother. “But what did she mean when she said it was not finished? How can it be ready if it is not finished?”

“I will tell you later,” my mother said, “but first I will take you to the Navajo village.”

We went down to the village. A group of young men were making sand pictures. We walked through the whole village, watching the different things the people were doing.

It was not until that evening that my mother finally explained the Navajo woman’s words.“Did you notice anything about the things the people were making?” my mother asked.

“What should I have noticed?” I looked at her and asked.

“Each thing the Navajo make has one smaller part that is not complete. The designs in their sand pictures are often not perfectly done, for example---- the line of the circle may not quite close. If you look carefully at your blanket, you will probably find a stitch (一针) missing.”

I took the blanket off, but it looked as perfect as any design could be. Then suddenly, I noticed that sure enough a stitch was missing!

“But why do the Navajo intentionally leave some tiny part unfinished?” I asked.

“They b elieve that when anything is completed or finished, it means the end has come----it will not be perfect until then. Then too, with a circle, they believe that they must leave a pathway for the bad spirits to run away and the good spirits to come in. So, often, they do not make the line close.”

1.The blanket the author received ____.

A.was poorly woven

B.made her think a lot

C.cost her a lot of money

D.was finished, but not ready.

2.Which of the following may the Navajo believe?
