Dad hurried to get home before dark so he could go for a run, but he had forgotten to wear his safety belt— a mistake 75% of the US population make every day. Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father," But, Dad, you can't be healthy if you're dead." The big question is why so many people drive cars without wearing safety belts.

There have been many misunderstandings about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars about forty years ago. The following are three of the most common.

Number One: Safety belts aren't needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour.

Truth: When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver will hit himself on the front window of the car with a hard force, it feels like diving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 meters.

Number Two: Safety belts "trap(困住)"people in cars. So if the cars are burning or sinking in water, it’s difficult for people to move.

Truth: Sorry, but studies show that if people are not wearing safety belts, they are easy to be knocked unconscious(昏迷). So they will have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to have a clear head to free free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them.

Number Three: It's best to be "thrown clear" of a serious accident.

Truth: Sorry again, but any accident serious enough to "throw you clear" is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater when people are "thrown clear."

Forty years ago few people were b rave enough to ask, ―What will people do with a computer in the home?‖ That’s because computers then were usually huge machines and mostly used by governments and businesses .But on March 5th in 1975, 32 men gathered to find answers to this question .It was the first meeting of the Homebrew Computer Club.

Everyone in the club shared the same hobby—fitting together computer parts .The members of Homebrew differed in their levels for skill and experience. Some worked for computer companies .Some had just graduated from high school, and some just loved playing with electronics .They were all excited about the possibilities of the personal computer. ____________After six months the group grew 100 members.

Meetings were held in a spirit of fun and discovery .The people in the group didn’t care about making money. They just wanted to share their ideas—and computers parts—freely. They hoped that their dream of making low cost home computers would come true for common people.

Without being prevented by the group’s fu n-loving nature, many members went on to achieve great things. One of the youngest, Bob Lash, went on to invent several electronic medical machines. Another member, John Draper, developed one of the first word–processing programs. Somewhat in the Homebrew crowd sat perhaps its most famous member, Steve Wozniak. The young engineer seldom spoke during meetings .But when he first shared his idea for the Apple I computer, everyone paid attention. This computer helped point the way toward the future of low-cost, personal computers. And, of course, it resulted in Wozniak forming a partnership with the talented Steve Jobs.

Although the Homebrew Computer Club stopped meeting in 1986, its influence lives on .Thanks to the Homebrew Computer Club, a great number of people today enjoy the convenience of personal computers.
