IV. Reading Comprehension

Passage 1

Emotional maturity means knowing that another person cannot fill up the hole in your heart. That is your responsibility. You need to love and affirm yourself day-by-day, moment-by-moment. That is the spiritual challenge of your life and everybody’s life. Without your love for yourself, nothing works. No amount of love from your partner is enough. The search for love from other people is like the alcoholic’s search for happiness in a bottle. The more he drinks, the less satisfied he

We are all addicted to falling in love. But after we’ve “fallen” a few times and broken our emotional bones, we hopefully wise up a bit. We know that the high of falling in love is not going to last. We know that sooner or later we will have to get real with each other. That is the difference between romance and partnership. Romance is an attempt to keep the addiction going. It has a very short half-life. Partnership is the dance of two ordinary people learning to live together day by day. It is a very challenging school that we enroll in. It is sometimes a lot more work than play. And it certainly requires a lot more psychological adjustment than years of therapy! We don’t just graduate from this school in a year or two. It takes many years, perhaps even a lifetime, for us to master the curriculum. Your partners are imperfect human beings, just like you. They were not the “wrong” partners any more than you were. Probably, they reflected your own level of realism and emotional maturity. That’s usually the way it works. So don’t waste your time thinking you simply made some bad choices. The only bad choice you made was forgetting who has the full time job loving you. I know that you know who this is !

We keep remembering that they are not perfect, nor we are. Love is not a game of perfection. It is a game of overwhelming imperfection. The amazing thing is that

love survives all of our mistaken attempts to control our partners and our

IV. Reading Comprehension

Passage One

Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war? War is an ancient institution which has existed for at least six thousand years. It was always bad and usually foolish, but in the past the human race managed to live with it. Modern ingenuity (创造力) has changed this. Either Man will abolish war, or war will abolish Man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the most serious danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons, maybe for long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done until we have succeeded in abolishing war. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not as contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in killing people, but by arbitration (调解)in accordance with agreed principles of law. It is not easy to change very old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.

There are those who say that the adoption of this or that ideology would prevent war. I believe this to be a big error. All ideologies are based on dogmatic (教条式的) statements which are, at best, doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Their adherents believe in them fanatically (狂热地) that they are willing to go to war in support of them.

The movement of world opinion during the past few years has been very largely such as we can welcome. It has become a commonplace (老生长谈) that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course very difficult problems remain in the world, but the spirit in which they are being approached is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that negotiations should reach agreements even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important

conflict nowadays is not between different countries, but between Man and the atom bomb.

The human nose is an underrated tool. Humans are often thought to be insensitive smellers compared with animals, but this is largely because, (1) ____ animals, we stand upright. This means that our noses are (2) ______ to perceiving those smells which float through the air, missing the majority of smells which stick to (3) ______. In fact, though, we are extremely sensitive to smells, even if we do not generally realize it. Our noses are capable of (4) ______ human smells even when these are diluted to far below one part in one million.

Strangely, some people find that they can smell one type of flower but not another, whereas others are sensitive to the smells of both flowers. This may be because some people do not have the genes necessary to generate (5) ____ smell receptors in the nose. These receptors are the cells which sense smells and send (6) ____ to the brain. However, it has been found that even people insensitive to a certain smell at first can suddenly become sensitive to it when exposed to it often enough.

The explanation for insensitivity to smell seems to be that the brain finds it (7)

_____ to keep all smell receptors working all the time but can (8) ____ new receptors if necessary. This may also explain why we are not usually sensitive to our own smells--we simply do not need to be. We are not (9) _____ of the usual smell of our own house, but we notice new smells when we visit someone else’s. The brain finds it best to keep smell receptors available for unfamiliar and (10) _____ signals such as the smell of smoke, which might indicate the danger of fire.

IV. Reading Comprehension

Passage 1

Sleep is part of a person’s daily activity cycle. There are several different stages of sleep, and they too occur in cycles. If you are an average sleeper, your sleep cycle is as follows. When you first drift off into slumber, your eyes will roll about a bit, your temperature will drop slightly, your muscles will relax, and your breathing will be slow and become quite regular. Your brain waves slow down a bit too, with the alpha rhythm of rather fast waves predominating for the first few minutes. This is called stage 1 sleep. For the next half hour or so, as you relax more and more, you will drift down through stage 2 and stage 3 sleep. The lower your stage of sleep, the slower your brain waves will be. Then about 40 to 60 minutes after you lose consciousness you will have reached the deepest sleep of all. Your brain waves will show the large slow waves that are known as the delta rhythm. This is stage 4 sleep.

You do not remain at this deep fourth stage all night long, but instead about 80 minutes after you fall into slumber, your brain activity level will increase again slightly. The delta rhythm will disappear, to be replaced by the activity pattern of brain waves. Your eyes will begin to dart around under your closed eyelids (眼皮) as if you were looking at something occurring in front of you. This period of rapid eye movement lasts for some 8 to 15 minutes and is called REM sleep. It is during REM sleep period, your body will soon relax again, your breathing will grow slow and regular once more, and you will slip gently back from stage 1 to stage 4 sleep —only to rise once again to the surface of near consciousness some 80 minutes later.

1. The stages of sleep take on ____.

A) an irregular aspect. B) a regular aspect

C) a punctual aspect D) a similar aspect

2. Stage 4 sleep lasts ____.

A) about 80 minutes B) about 40-60 minutes

C) about 30 minutes D) about 20-40 minutes

3. The brain waves are the slowest during ____.

A) stage 1 B) stage 2 and stage 3 C) stage 4 D) REM sleep

4. In the second paragraph the word “dart” means ____.

A) glare B) move rapidly or suddenly C) stop moving D) gaze

5. One of the features of REM sleep is that ____.

A) there are large slow waves, though rapid for the first few minutes

B) you have the deepest sleep

C) there are no brain waves

综合英语3试卷解析

综合英语3期末试卷 得分_________ Part Ⅰ Reading Comprehension Passage A Since Insight exposed the U.S. Postal Service’s program “Under the Eagle’s Eye”, the eyes of many privacy advocates have focused like a laser on the agency. “Warning! The post office c ould report YOU as a drug dealer or terrorist,” reads a press release from the Libertarian Party. Until the Postal Service drops its orders to postal clerks to report certain legal financial transactions as “suspicious activity”, the Libertarian Party and others are urging consumers to purchase money orders, wire transfers and cash cards elsewhere. But now Insight has learned that it’s not just purchases of these financial instruments that the post office reports as suspicious. In a training video obtained by Insight, after a jewelry store owner hands a postal clerk $50,000 cash to put on his postage meter, the clerk is told to report this as suspicious transaction. Even though it may be perfectly legal, using this much cash is “strange”, the video says. “If putting a lot of money on your postage meter is a sign of criminal activity, I’m afraid we’re going to have to have a little talk with our own office manager,” says George Getz, spokesman for the Libertarian Party, which uses a postage meter to send mass mailings. “It seems unbelievable. Do you launder money 32 cents at a time? That’s crazy.” According to the Postal Service, even transactions of a few thousand dollars in cash should arouse suspicion. But privacy advocates say it is normal, for instance, for restaurant or store owners who want to send out promotional mailings to go to the post office and put the cash receipts for that day on their postage meters. “Under the Eagle’s Eye” does not apply to purchases of stamps and “philatelic” it ems. But why, then, does the program apply to postage on meters, which is merely “electronic stamps”, asks Rick Merritt, director of Postal Watch. 1) Insight is most probably ________.
