Wherever she goes, Molly leaves her mark. Without saying a word, she speaks to people with her kind eyes. Even when she walks away, she leaves an impression. Molly's mark is a smile, stamped into the ground by the horseshoe at the bottom of her false leg.

A few years ago, Molly was badly attacked by a dog. The dog bit all four of Molly's legs and left large cuts in her face. Molly's owner, Kate Harris, took her to an animal hospital. Doctors there were able to save Molly's life, but soon one of her legs became very infected(感染病菌的).

At first, doctors thought Molly would have to be put to sleep. But Molly changed their minds. This pony, doctors noticed, shifted her weight, and rested her good leg from time to time. Doctors knew that Molly had amazing intelligence, and that she wanted to live.

Several doctors operated on Molly, and removed her infected leg. A false leg was made for her. The leg was a hollow cast with a pole at the bottom for balance. Doctors gave Molly a special horseshoe at the bottom of the leg. This horseshoe she had had a stamp of a smile face in it!

After the operation, Molly walked around on all four legs, as if nothing had ever happened to her! Now, with every step she takes, she stamps a smile in the dirt. But she leaves her mark in other ways, too.

Kate Harris took Molly to the false leg center. There were children there who, like Molly, had artificial arms or legs. They were amazed to see a pony with a false

leg. Molly made them smile and gave them hope. Soon, Molly began to visit schools, nursing homes, army bases and hospitals. A book was even written about Molly!

由文章第三段“This pony, doctors noticed, shifted her weight…”及倒数第三段的“Doctors gave Molly a special horseshoe at the bottom of

the leg.”

由第三段的“At first, doctors thought Molly would have to be put to sleep”可以看出:起初,医生认为Molly会毫无疑问地被以人道的方法结束生命。由此可以看出:C项“In the beginning, doctors had planned to end Molly's life.”正确。注意选项所说的“end Molly's life”对应原文的“Molly would have to be put to sleep”。

故选A。

Molly's mark is a smile, stamped into the ground by the horseshoe at the bottom of her false leg.

2.Sir Henry Stewart was certainly successful. I asked one day, soon after he’d retired to attend his garden, what it was like to have achieved all of one’s ambitions. He looked down at his roses, and went on watering them. Then he said, “The only value in achieving one’s ambitions is that you then realize that they are not worth achieving. ” Within a moment we were back to a safe discussion on the weather. That was two years ago.

I recall this incident, for yesterday, I was passing his house, and had drawn up my cart just outside his garden wall. I had pulled in from the road for no other reason than to let a bus pass me. As I set there filling my pipe, I suddenly heard

a shout of sheer joy come from the other side of the wall.

I looked over. There stood Sir Henry doing nothing less than a dance of pure unashamed delight. Even when he observed my puzzled face staring over the wall he did not seem embarrassed, but shouted to me to climb over.

“Come and see, Jan. Look! I have done it at last! I have done it at last!”

There he was , holding a small box of earth in his hand. I observed three tiny shoots out of it.

“And there were only three!” he said, his eye laughing to heaven.

“Three what?” I asked.

“Peach stones”, he replied. “I’ve always wanted to make peach stones grow, ever since I was a child, when I used to take them home after a party, or as a man after a banquet. And I used to plant them, and forget where I planted them. But now at last I have done it , and , what’s more, I had only three stones, and there they are, one, two, three shoots,” he counted.

And Sir Henry ran off, calling for his wife to come and see his achievement—the achievement of simplicity.

Last night’s meteor(流星) shower left many people in the community dissatisfied and demanding answers.According to Gabe Rothsclild, Emerald Valley’s mayor, people gathered in the suburbs of the city, carrying heavy telescopes, expecting to watch the brightly burning meteors passing through the sky. What they found instead was a sky so brightened by the city’s lights that it darkened the light of the meteors passing overhead.

Astronomers---scientists who study stars and planets----have been complaining

There is yet a population besides professional and amateur star observers that suffers even more from light pollution. They worry that exposure to light while sleeping can increase person’s chances of getting cancer.

Emerald Valley is only one community that is becoming aware of the negative effects of hight pollution. For years,Flagstaff,Arizona, has enforced lighting regulations in its city in order to assist astronomers at the Lowell Observatory.Similar efforts have been made worldwide, and a movement is underway to remind us to turn off lights when we are not using them,so that other creatures can share the night.

The mouse is a most effective device used by people to communicate with a computer.

The mouse is a most effective device used by people to communicate with a computer.

For most people, it’s almost impossible to operate a computer without a mouse, let alone surf the Internet. A well-chosen mouse is really handy, flexible and convenient in controlling the screen. With the functions of inserting, deleting, moving and copying, it enables us to edit test, browse web page and download what we want. It can even bring us a flood of music, movies and PC games. Just imagine, all this can be done with a cute mouse.

A convenient tool can certainly make our work easier, but it doesn’t always help in a positive way. Too much ready information on our fingertips leaves little room for knowledge pursuing. Too many ready answers make us less excited in finding truth. Relying too much on mouse clicking makes us lazier and less creative both mentally and physically.(153 words)

Dear Mike,

Thank you very much for your concern.______________________________________

Yours: Lihua

Dear Mike,

Thank you very much for your concern. I’m OK and so far no A H1N1 cases are reported in my school. However we are doing everything to safeguard ourselves from the disease. My school is thoroughly cleaned everyday. Windows are open to let in the fresh air. We are asked to stay away from crowds in the street and to wash our hands often both at school and at home. Our body temperatures are closely watched and any sign of fever will be dealt with immediately. The school canteen prepares more nutritious food to keep us strong and healthy. With all these measures I’m sure we can pull through this crisis safely.

Yours:

Lihua
