P art two Reading and Comprehension (40 points)

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each of the passages is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices

marked A, B, C and D. choose the best and mark your answer on the

ANSWER SHEET with a single line throw the center.

Passage one

As world population becomes denser, we will feel greater pressure from the expanding number of people. Some experts argue that we are approaching the limit of the number of people the earth can support adequately, and they feel we should turn to compulsory birth control. Other authorities feel that if birth control is imposed on the population, the future of mankind would be seriously jeopardized (危害). They think that very intelligent people would be more likely to have fewer children and this would bring about a lowering of the general level of intelligence in the population as a whole. However, some critics see a fallacy in this argument. In addition to genetics, they say, intelligence depends on an adequate diet, a good home environment, parental attention, and education--- all of which are increasing in the world as the general population becomes more affluent.

16. Some people think birth control is _____.

A. too strict

B. not a workable idea

C. dangerous

D. only for religious people

17. Critics say intelligence is based on _____ .

A. a good home environment

B. adequate

C. genetics

D. all of the above

18. The word “fallacy” probably means ____.

A. False idea

B. Different idea

C. Unique idea

D. Dangerous idea

19. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. The whole world is faced with the problem of increasing population.

B. Some scientists argued that birth control can affect the level of intelligence

C. Genetics is one of the main factors to intelligence

D. Food, family attention and education have nothing to do with intelligence

20. What is this passage mainly about?

A. Birth control

B. How to develop intelligence

C. Population and intelligence

D. The importance of genetics

Passage two

It is all very well to blame traffic jams, the cost of petrol and the quick pace of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming terrible. You might tolerate the rude and in considerate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered drivers is the exception to the rule. Perhaps we need a campaign calling for “Be Kind to Other Drivers”, otherwise, it may get completely out of hand.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed and good-tempered of the driver to resist the temptation to revenge when

treated rudely. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards relieving the tension of driving. A friendly nod or wave in response to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of goodwill. Tolerance is absolutely necessary in modern traffic condition. But such politeness is very rare today. Many drivers nowa days don’t even seem to recognize politeness when they see it.

A veteran driver, whose manners are faultless, told me that it would help if motorist learn to drive correctly into traffic streams without causing the total blockages 拥堵that may give rise to bad temper. Unfortunately, modern motorists can’t even learn to drive, let alone be well-mannered on the road. Years ago the experts warned us that the car-ownership explosion would demand a lot more

give-and-take平等互让from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

21. According to the passage, troubles on the road are mainly caused by ______.

A. people’s attitude towards driver

B. the rhythm of modern life

C. traffic condition

D. the behavior of the driver

22. The sentence “You might tolerate the rude and in considerate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered drivers is the exception to the rule.” Implies that

____.

A. our society is unjust to well-mannered driver.

B. rude drivers can be met only occasionally

C. nowadays impolite drivers constitute the majority of motorists

D. the well-mannered motorists cannot tolerate the rude driver.

23. By “good sense” (para 2.) the writer means ______.

A. the driver’s prompt response to difficult conditions

B. the driver’s ability to understand and react politely

C. the driver’s tolerance of bad road conditions

D. the driver’s acknowledge of traffic regulations

24. Experts have long pointed out that in the face of car-ownership explosion, _____.

A. drivers should be ready to yield to one another.

B. road users should make more sacrifices

C. drivers will suffer a great loss if they pay no respect to others

D. drivers should have more communication among others

25. In the writer’s opinion, ______.

A. drivers should apply road politeness properly

B. strict traffic regulations are badly needed

C. rude and inconsiderate drivers should be punished

D. drivers should try their best to avoid traffic jams

Passage three

What do we mean by a satisfactory standard of living? Obviously, it must include the basic necessities of life such as food, clothing and shelter. To get these necessities on regular basis, a person must have a reliable income. But we have other needs which would probably also be included as basic, such as health and education facilities.

We may think of all these as our needs. Yet most of us would be far from satisfied if we had nothing more than these which are supplied for us. We all enjoy extra income to spend on things like books, sports or hobbies. Sometimes we save some of this extra income to pay for future expense of this type on holidays. So we must add our wants to our basic needs. Our standards of living is the degree, to which these needs and wants are satisfied.

But as time goes on, what we think of as our basic needs changes. Twenty years ago a television would have been a luxury, and still is in some countries now. Even now we cannot say it is a need in the same sense as food, clothing and shelter. Yet if most of the people of a country have one, it comes to be accepted as a need. It is possible therefore to have food, clothing and shelter and still be poor by the standard of our own country.

26. What we need in life is divided into ______ according to this article

A. the basic necessities and luxury

B. many kinds of need such as food, clothing and houses

C. four groups the basic necessities, luxury, reliable income and future expense

D. the basic necessities and reliable income

27. A person who gets the basic necessities must ____ according to the writer.

A. have a reliable income

B. learn how to please his manager

C. finish his work ahead the time

D. get a good education

28. We all enjoy ____________.

A. having only reliable income

B. having reliable income and extra income

C. having nothing more than food and clothing

D. having nothing more than reliable income

29. With time going on, ______.

A. a luxury may change into a need which most people want to get

B. the basic needs are getting smaller and smaller

C. a luxury and the basic needs can be exchanged

D. the basic needs can be changed into a luxury

30. If most people of a country have a television, we _______.

A. can say the television is a need in the same sense as food and clothing and shelter

B. can say the television must be in the basic necessities

C. can not say the television is the basic necessities

D. can say every family must have one

Passage four

They are in a dream world where things often appear to be more romantic and beautiful than in real life.

The biggest “dream factories” are in Hollywood, the capital of the film industry. Each year, Hollywood studios make hundreds of movies that are shown all over the world. American movies are popular because they tell stories and are well-made. They provide the public with heroes who do things the average person would like to do but often can not. your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the

center.

Nonviolent resistance is not a method for coward; it does resist. If one uses this method because he is afraid or merely because he lacked the 76 of violence, he is not truly nonviolent. This is why Gandhi often said that if cowardice is the only alternative to violence, it is better to fight. He made this 77 conscious of the fact that there is always another alternative: no individual or group need submit 78 any wrong, nor need they use 79 to right that wrong; there is the way of nonviolent resistance. It is not a method of passivity. The phrase “passive resistance ” often gives the 80 impression that this is a sort of “do-nothing-method” in which the resister quietly and 81 accept evil. But nothing is further from the truth. For the nonviolent resister is passive in the sense 82 he is not physically aggressive toward the 83 , his mind and emotion are always active, constantly seeking to persuade his opponent that he is wrong. The method is passive 84 but strongly active spiritually. It is not passive non-resistance to evil; it is 85 nonviolent resistance to evil.

Passage one

On November 19, 1953, Abraham Lincoln went to Gettysburg in Pennsylvania to speak at the National Soldiers Cemetery. The Civil War was still going on. There was much criticism of President Lincoln at the time. He was not at all popular. He had been invited to speak at Gettysburg only out of politeness. The principal was to be Edward Everett, a famous statesman and speaker of the day. Everett was a handsome man and very popular everywhere.

It is said that Lincoln prepared his speech on the train while going to Gettysburg. Late that night, alone in his hotel room and tired out, he again worked briefly on the speech. The next day, Everett spoke first. He spoke for an hour and 57 minutes. His speech was a perfect example of the rich oratory of the day. Then Lincoln rose. The crowd of 15,000 people at first paid little attention to him. He spoke for only 9 minutes. At the end there was little applause. Lincoln turned to a friend and remarked, “I have failed again.” On the way back to Washington, he said sadly, “the speech was a flat failure, and the people are disappointed.”

Some newspapers at first criticized the speech. But little by little as people read the speech they began to understand better. They began to appreciate its simplicity and its deep meaning. It was a speech which only Abraham Lincoln could have made.

Passage two

We all know that it is possible for ordinary people to make their homes on the equator, although often they may feel uncomfortably hot there. Millions do it. But as for the North Pole—we know that it is not only a dangerously cold place, but that people like you and I would find it quite impossible to live there.

At present time only the scientists and explores can do so, and they use special instrument. Men have been traveling across and around the equators on wheels, on their feet or in ships for thousands of years; but only a few men, with great difficulty and in very recent time, have ever crossed the ice to the North Pole. So it may surprise you to learn that, when traveling by air, it is really safer to fly over the North Pole than over the equator. Of course, it is not true about landings in the polar region, but the weather, if we are flying at a height of 5,000 meters above the Pole is a delight. At 4,000 meters and move above the earth you can always be sure that you will not see a cloud in the sky as your eyes can reach. In the tropics, on the other hand, you are not certain to keep clear of bad weather even at such height such as 18,000 or 20,000 meters.

Aero planes can’t climb as high or as quickly in cold air as in warm. Nor can clouds. In practice, this is an advantage to the aero plane, which is already at a good height when it reaches the polar region and so does not to climb, while at the same time cold air keeps the clouds down low.

Passage four

In some ways, the U.S. has made great progress in fire prevention. It has been four decades since more than 100 Americans died in a fire.

But even with such success, the U.S. still has one of the worst fire death rates in the world. Safety experts say the problem is neither money nor technology, but the indifference of country that just will not take fires seriously enough.

American fire department are some of the world’s fasted and best-equipped. They have to be because the US has twice Japan’s population, and 40 times as many fires. It spends far less on preventing fires than on fighting them. And American fire-safety lessons are aimed almost entirely at children, who die in disproportionately large numbers in fires but who, contrary to popular myth, start very few of them.

Experts say that the fatal error is an attitude that fires are not really anyone’s fault. That is not so in other countries, where both public education and the law treat fires as either a personal failing or a crime. Japan has many wood houses; of the estimated 48
