Friend is better than fortune. Friend is worse than poison in some cases. The two sentences above are opposite and seem to be unreasonable but they can be explained as follows: the first refers to all good friends who drive us towards good while the second all bad ones who lead us to wrong ways.

My ideal friend is of course a good friend whose goodness is shown below---- he has no bad likings, such as smoking and drinking. He lives in frugality(节俭). He studies hard so as not to waste his golden time. At home he honors his parents and loves his brothers; at school he respects

his teachers and shares feelings of his classmates. He treats those truly who are true to him. In a word, he has all the good characters better than mine. I can follow him as a model. With his help, I am free from all difficulties.

Indeed, if I have such a person as my friend, I shall never fear difficulty and I shall never know the existence of the word “ failure”.

Many cities around the world today are heavily polluted. Careless methods of production and lack of consumer demand for environmentally friendly products have contributed to the pollution problem. One result is that millions of tons of glass, paper, plastic, and metal containers are produced, and these are difficult to get rid of.

However, today, more and more consumers are choosing “green” and demanding that the products they buy should be safe for the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions like these: “Will this shampoo damage the environment?” “Can this metal container be reused or can it only be used once?”

A recent study showed that two out of five adults now consider the environmental safety of a product before they buy it. This means that companies must now change the way they make and sell their products to make sure that they are “green”, that is, friendly to the environment.

Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some supermarket products carry labels to show that the product is green. Some companies have made the manufacturing(生产)of clean and safe products their main selling point and emphasize it in their advertising.

The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how they do business. No longer will the public accept the old attitude of “Buy it, use it, throw it away, and forget it”. The public pressu re is on, and gradually business is cleaning up its act.

65. It is clear from the text that the driving force(动力)behind green products is____.

Wen Jiabao arrived in Singapore yesterday for an official visit to the country. It is the first visit by a Chinese Premier to Singapore in eight years. In the arrival statement, Wen said he is looking forward to the meeting with Singapore on ways to deepen East Asian cooperation between two nations so as to contribute to the building of a peaceful, harmonious relationship.

Premier Wen Jiabao and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong agreed to jointly develop an environmentally-friendly city in Northeastern China. The city will be a model for sustainable development, a Singaporen government statement said. The “Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city”will be developed by a joint venture formed by Chinese and Singaporen compani es. “This eco-city, to be built in Tianjin, will become another highlight in our relations,” Wen said after signing an agreement with Lee, who agreed, “On the Singapore side, on all levels, we’ll give this project our full support.”

The two sides will share expertise and experiences in urban planning, environmental protection, energy conservation, recycling, use of renewable resources and wastewater reuse. China’s economic planning agency issued a set of guidelines earlier this month welcoming foreign investment in environmentally-friendly areas such as recycling, “clean” industries and environmental protection.

Bilateral(双边的)relations between China and Singapore have seen big progress even though the two countries established diplomatic ties only 17 years ago, Wen said during his talks with Lee.

With your workload growing, you may be telling yourself a vacation is one luxury you can’t afford. But the truth is that you can’t afford not to take one. A vacation allows you the opportunity

to recharge your physical and emotional batteries, disconnect from everyday concerns and return to work rested and refreshed. Some facts have proved employees are more productive after a vacation than before one. Here are some tips for you to plan your vacation to make sure that your time away from the office is worry free.

Time is right. A Robert Half survey shows that July and August are the most favorable months for employees to take a break because these months offer ideal beach weather and many businesses slow down during this time. When planning your vacation, remember to take into account(考虑)any activity that your department will be focused on during that time. For instance, if a big task is planned for the summer, you may consider postponing your trip until the fall.

Ask others for assistance. Ask trust ed colleagues to handle your projects while you’re away. Your supervisor can help you determine who is the most qualified for a particular task.

Let your contacts know. Give colleagues and customers you frequently work with a few weeks’ notice before yo u start off. This will give them enough time to plan for your absence. Conduct a technical review. Before you leave, make sure there is plenty of room in your e-mail inbox so you don’t exceed(超越)your storage limit while you’re out of the office, which might prevent you from sending messages when you return. Also make sure pas swords won’t expire(期满)while you are away.

In short, taking vacation is necessary and beneficial for your job. But you must plan your vacation properly in order to be work free and worry free on holiday.

He knew that cholera would never b e controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera ki lled people. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. H e immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle f rom the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed d own. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deat hs that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away f rom Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it deliver ed to her house every day. 高二英语必修五unit1语法总结

Unit 1 语法重点 一、动词不定式 不定式可以用来做主语、表语、定语、状语、宾语、独立成分,表示比较具体的意义。 (1)做主语 ①动词不定式短语 To master a foreign language is no easy job. To see this film is to waste time. To solve this problem is out of the question ②为平衡整个句子,避免头重脚轻,常用it做形式主语,而将真正主语不定式放后 面,用于这种形式是一些特定的结构。例如: 1)谓语部分是系表结构,表语是某些形容词或名词。例如: It is foolish to do in this way. It sounds reasonable to do it this way. 2)某些动词做谓语时。例如: It took much time to do this. It makes us excited to think about that. (2) 做表语 表示打算、计划、命令和要求,用于appear, seem, happen等系动词后面 Such questions are to be avoided. What he said proved to be true. He seems to be ill. (3) 做定语 做定语时不定式一般紧跟其所修饰名词或代词后面。例如: He was the first one to come this morning. He didn’t have the chance to go to school in the past. 如果不定式是不及物动词时,应注意其相应介词的搭配。例如: He has nothing to worry about. She is a very nice person to work with. (4) 作状语 不定式作状语可以表示目的、原因和结果。 ①表目的常用in order to, so as to,等结构但so as to只能放在主句之后。 Check your homework so as to avoid mistakes. She goes home (in order) to see her grandmother every week. ②表结果常用only to do, enough to do, too…to do等句型,不定式短语作结果状语具有 “意料之外”之意。 He is too excited to speak anything. I hurried to his house, only to find him out. ③原因 She seemed surprised to see us. He is sorry for what he did to think of his past. -不定式作方式状语时,通常采用as if 或 as though + to 的结构,其意为“好像要……”。 He raised his hand as if to hit me. She took out a pen and a piece of paper as though to write something. (5) 做宾语
