Cyber-bullying

With the prevalence of social media and digital forums, cyber-bullying has become a serious social problem. Cyber-bullying can take place on social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, over digital devices like cell phones and computers. It includes behavior s like spreading lies and rumors to deliberately humiliate a targeted person, exerting language violence to victims, disclosing others’ privacy, etc.

Unlike the traditional bullying, this electronic bullying can remain anonymous, which makes it difficult for the offender to be caught or punished. Besides, the recent use of mobile applications and rise of smart-phones have yielded a more accessible form of cyber-bullying. As cyber-bullying is an intense form of psychological abuse, its victims usually suffer from depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. Some victims even drop out of school and experience suicidal tendencies.

Preventive actions should be taken against cyber-bullying. Firstly, campaigns should be designed to educate people about how they can play a role in ending cyber-bullying. Secondly, related legislation should be made to facilitate its control. Last but not the least, parents, teachers and victims can make joint efforts to find possible solutions or remedies. Together, we can help conquer cyber-bullying and end this silent pandemic.

Will physical money be replaced by digital money?

As is illustrated in the picture, a beggar is holding a begging bowl with a QR code on it, while a kind-hearted man is giving him money by scanning the QR code on the bowl.

The picture vividly mirrors the phenomenon that an increasing number of people move away from carrying around notes and coins in their pocket toward using their smart-phones or credit cards to make payments. Actually, heated discussions have been aroused about whether physical money will be taken over by digital money.

From my point of view, although physical money will still be around for a while, digital money will inevitably become the dominant means of payment for the following reasons. Digital money helps quicken checkout lines, reduce transaction costs, and let clerks focus on customer services instead of handling cash. Besides, human errors are minimized as there’s no need to calculate change. In addition, merchants can use smart technology to analyze customer spending habits to offer personalized shopping information. Due to the fact that digital payment is quicker, simpler and crucially, more secure than paying in cash, it is just a matter of time before physical money will be replaced by digital money.

This behaviour is typically “the worship of ashes”. In its essence, tomb worship should be an occasion to pay heartfelt tribute to the departed. Another example is the craze for Chinese traditional costumes. There is no use simply imitating the clothes, whose importance lies in understanding the background culture.

In my opinion the proper thing to do with traditions is to break with the outdated, superficial and destructive parts, and maintain the valuable and meaningful parts that can stand the test of time and are worth passing along.
