Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of satisfying hunger. We've all been there, finishing a whole bag of chips out of boredom or eating cookie after cookie while preparing for a big test. But when done a lot — especially without being realized —emotional eating can affect weight, health, and overall well-being.

Not many of us make the connection between eating and our feelings. But understanding what drives emotional eating can help people take steps to change it.

Some people think emotional eating is caused by negative feelings. Yes, people often turn to food when they're stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious, or bored. But emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine's Day or the celebration of a holiday feast.

Sometimes emotional eating is tied to major life events, like a death or a divorce. More often, though, it's the countless little daily stresses that cause someone to seek comfort or distraction (分神)in food.

Emotional eating habits can be learned: A child who is given candy after a big achievement may grow up using candy as a reward for a job well done. A kid who is given cookies as a way to stop crying may learn to link cookies with comfort.

It?s not easy to “unlearn”habits of emotional eating. But it?s possible. And it starts with an awareness of what?s going on.

Even when we understand what?s going on, many of us still need help breaking the cycle of emotional eating. It?s not easy. So don?t go it alone when you don?t have to.

Take advantage of expert help. Therapists(治疗专家) can help you deal with your feelings. Nutritionists can help you identify your eating habits and get you on track with a better diet. Fitness experts can get your body?s feel-good chemicals firing(被激起)through exercise instead of food.

56. Which of the following is NOT the reason that leads to emotional eating?

A. Daily stress.

B. Positive feelings.

C. Common diseases.

D. Negative feelings.

57.We can conclude from the passage that ______.

A.emotional eating is harmful to health

B. emotional eating makes people full of energy

C. it is necessary to have the habit of emotional eating

D. it is not difficult to give up the habit of emotional eating

B

At the deepest depths of the great mountain, in a huge labyrinth(迷宫)created by the great wizards, there lived the worst of monsters(怪物), Krathon. He had been put there after terrorizing (吓唬)the local population. It was a magic labyrinth with only one entrance and exit which changed its position every day.

But it so happened that there arrived in that land a man whose only wish was to rule over the King?s people. His name was Jafa, and on hearing of Kraton, he wanted to set it free to help him with his plans. So, Jafa traveled to the great mountain with all his slaves. The slaves were so afraid of Jafa that it didn?t take them long to find the entrance to the labyrinth. One of these slaves, a very wise man, found out how to know the location of the exit each day from outside, once Jafa was inside the mountain. “Only one more thing,”said the slave, “when you?re going to exit from the labyrinth, you should wait until it?s nighttime.”

Jafa entered the labyrinth and started calling for the monster in the darkness, explaining to the monster his plan. The monster shouted his agreement. After several days they found each other in the darkness. Following the system recommended by Jafa?s slave, they soon found the way out. On approaching it, bright sunlight played upon the exit. Jafa remembered his slave?s words and sat down to wait, but the beast, seeing itself free at last, ran out of the labyrinth. From inside, Jafa heard Kraton?s screams. And though he still remembered his slave?s words, he decided to go out to see what had happened.

As soon as it touched Jafa?s face, the sunlight and the light of a thousand mirrors that the wise slave had placed around the exit entered Jafa?s eyes. He became blind, as had happened to Kraton just moments earlier. And so, they had to remain there for ever in a life of darkness.

If you are sitting, please stand up. Move your legs. Touch your toes if you can. Do anything but sit. New research shows that if you cut down on the time you spend sitting, you might live longer. Sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years. Cutting television time to less than two hours a day can add one point four years to life.

The human body is designed to move. The fact is just the opposite. Modern lifestyles and office

jobs rarely give us the chance to move around. We sit while we?re eating; we sit in the car; we sit while we are watching TV. And most of us sit for many hours at work.Sitting is something we do all the time. On average, Americans sit for four and a half to five hours a day. But that does not make sitting good for us.

You may exercise often. That does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. We can?t throw away physical activity. It is extremely important. Eve if you exercise for 30 minutes a day, what goes on in the other 23 and a half hours a day is also very important.

Changes are coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A “standing desk”lets people stand while they work. Another new design is called the “treadmill desk”. It is an exercise machine that lets you walk slowly in one place. Even some U.S. schools begin to experiment with desks that are part bicycle to keep children moving.

Many companies may not buy a standing desk for everybody. However, they may get five standing desks or a treadmill desk for their employees and put them in a certain place where people can go for an hour a day to answer their emails or talk on the phone. Experts suggest some other activities: take a walk at lunchtime; walk to the offices and talk directly instead of emailing colleagues. All these activities may help you live longer.

61.Why should people stand up according to the new research?

A.They should touch their toes.

B. Standing more can cure some diseases.

C. They spend too much time watching TV.

D. Sitting less does people good and may help people live longer.

62. What can we learn about sitting?

A.Sitting is the best position for the body.

B. The more people sit, the better they will be.

C. People usually have to sit for a long time nowadays.

D. Americans sit longer every day than people in other countries.

63. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.Exercising.

B. Sitting.

C. Standing.

D. The walking hour.

64. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The “treadmill desk” is used by people to run.

B. The new design of desks can help people sit less.

C. It?s better for school students to use standing desks.

D. It?s necessary for companies to offer a sitting desk to every employees.

Some years ago, a small Korean baby arrived in the United states to join her new family. She was nine months old and weighed only 9.5 pounds. Well taken care of by her new parents, she grew up happily in her new home, but remained a very small size. Her new name was Edie.

One day when Edie was in the second grade, she ran home from school, crying. She was frightened. That day, three new girls came to her class. During the break, they picked the smallest girl in the class to work off their anger on her. They shouted at Edie, pushed her from one place to another and threatened to beat her up. Edie spent an hour in the headmaster?s office with the three girls and was told that the teachers would be watching. The three girls were giving a warning. Edie?s mother held Edie and comforted her. After speaking with the headmaster, Edie?s mother learned that the three girls had been troublemakers at other schools. They were being given one more chance at a new beginning.

“These girls must have been very hurt in their young lives to be so angry,” Edie?s mother told her. “Be kind to your enemies and pray(祈祷)for those who hurt you. Edie, let?s pray.”Then they

prayed for the girls and thought about a plan of an action.

A plan began to come into being. “I can?t go to school with you every day, so you?ll need to stay close to a teacher when you are at a break or in line to go into school,” said Edie?s mother. “If the girls start to pick on you, tell them …I?d really be your friend.? Are you brave enough to do that?”Edie?s mother asked. “ We are asked to be kind to our enemies. Let?s see what happens, okay?”The tiny girl looked at her mother with a smile and said, “Yes, I?ll have a try.”

Every morning, before Edie left for school, she and her mother prayed for her to be safe and brave, and for the girls to be friendly. Every day, the girls jumped into line behind Edie and called her names and tried to be rude to her.

Each time, Edie looked up at them and said, “I?d really like to be your friend.” She did have to look up at them since they were so much taller than her. The teachers kept an eye on what was going on, but did not need to do anything as the girls were not hurting her.

After about two weeks, Edie came home looking so discouraged. She told her mother that she didn?t think the plan was working. After they talked about it some more and prayed, she decide to keep trying and continue to faithfully tell them, “I?d really like to be your friend.”

One day the following week, Edie ran home as fast as she could and ran into the house, shouting happily, “Mom, Mom, guess what happened today? Just like I always did, I really like to be your friend,? and one of the girls said …Okay, Edie, we give up. We?ll be your friends.?”

A short time later, as the girls were trying to become her friends, Edie asked the teacher if she could sit at a desk with the girls in the classroom. She had noticed that they were behaving badly in class because they didn?t understand the lessons. Edie became their tutor and helped them with their lessons.

Towards the end of the school year, when Edie?s parents went to school for a parent-teacher meeting, the teacher told them, “Because of Edie?s kindness, those girls have completely changed and are productive members of the class.”She felt she had seen a miracle, and so did Edie?s parents.

How many people go through life never experiencing kindness? They don?t see it in strangers, and some don?t even find it in their own families.Without experiencing kindness , it is impossible for them show kindness to others. The result of this tragic lack(缺乏)is seen everywhere. The world would be different if everyone could be kind to others, especially the unlovely.

Everyone wants to go to college. At college, you are meant to do well in your courses. You have to set up a solid schedule. For example, if you have a course at 11 am and no classes afterward, then make sure you do that course?s assignments within the next two hours, so you will be available to enjoy the rest of the day. Make sure you keep the GPA (the average of a student?s marks over a period of time in the US education system) that is required. Make sure not to party excessively. College is far from playing. You are paying for an education and hopefully a successful future. Remember you have the rest of your life to enjoy the party. And what you should do is to study, study and party a bit. Balance it out.

College also consists of completing independent work. What I mean by that is your are expected to have the ability to do the laundry and clean your room. Make sure you keep to a certain schedule when it comes to doing the laundry and cleaning your space. And make sure you choose your less eventful day when only one or two courses are offered, and do your cleaning! Basically, you need to be well organized with everything. Considering you?re most likely to have other roommates, you should organize your belongings, because nobody wants to room with a messy and unorganized person.

In addition, make sure you develop friendships with right people. The right people are those who are good at finding ways of dealing with practical problems and can make you happy and provide you with good advice. It is extremely important that they don?t always want to party and they can balance their college life as well as you do. You want to receive reciprocal treatment, so why not have a positive friend around you?

Most of all, when you have your month vacations such Christmas vacation, ensure that you get all your tiring stress and frustration removed by relaxing. Treat yourself to a spa with friends and also take the opportunity to work.

Last but not least, getting money in college is somewhat a difficult task unless you have quite generous and well-off parents. Cherish your parents? company and care, for they missed you so much and, after all, they are paying for your education.

书面表达:

This term he radio club in our school plans to play music at break, which has led to a heated discussion.

Forty percent of the students are in favour of the plan. On the one hand, they believe playing music at break can bring joy to the students. On the other hand, listening to music can help relax our brains, which will prepare us for the lesson to come psychologically, thus making for efficient music.

The other students, on the contrary, are strongly opposed to ti. They argue that listening to music in such a short period of time is useless. What is worse, some students may still be absorbed in the music when the next lesson begins. It does certainly do great harm to their learning.

From my point of view, I completely agree with the latter. Listening to music may prevent us from concentrating on our learning. It?s pointless to develop the habit; after all, no music will be allowed during the examination.
