Years ago, a woman named Genevieve Piturro began doing volunteer work that wouldn't just change her life, but would also have a life-changing influence on lots of children throughout the country. And it all began with some kids' pajamas(睡衣).

Always being interested in reading, Genevieve focused her new volunteer work on sharing her love of books with children. She only had free time after work, so she decided to spend her evenings reading to kids in homeless shelters. Genevieve's story could have ended there, but what she noticed happening after those nighttime readings is what soon gave her a life-changing idea. Seeing those children climb into their beds without any pajamas to sleep in brought tears to Genevieve's eyes. “I said to one of the workers there, ‘Next time, can I brin g pajamas?’ And she said, ‘That would be great. Nobody thinks of that.’” Genevieve told Oprah during a 2007 “Oprah Show” interview.

For her next visit, Genevieve returned armed with 12 pairs of pajamas. Some kids in the shelter quietly asked, “What's the u se of them?” — but it soon became clear that Genevieve had found a special need that had to be filled. Her Pajama Program was born.

Over the next five years, Genevieve and her Pajama Program collected 85,000 pairs of pajamas for children in need. Then, dur ing her “Oprah Show” interview, Genevieve received a big surprise of her own: Oprah and the show producers asked the audience to bring as many pajamas as they could to donate(捐赠)to Genevieve's organization. That final count totaled 32,046 pairs. “Hours aft er the show, thousands of our children in shelters received boxes of pajamas and books, thanks to everyone who watched,” says Genevieve. Many cultures around the world have a grain that is not grown or even known outside its home area.

Now, an ancient grain from Ethiopia, teff, is appearing in America. Teff has been an important part of the Ethiopian diet for thousands of years. Like oats, rice and wheat, it is a cereal(谷类的)grass. Teff is known for its small grain. It is used mainly to make flour(面粉). Teff has a mild and earthy taste. Teff flour is the main thing for the well-known flatbread found in Ethiopian restaurants. Wayne Carlson learned about teff while doing public health work in Africa in the mid-1970s. In the late 70s, Wayne returned to the U.S., married and settled in southwest Idaho. Then he came up with an idea to grow teff in his home state.

Wayne and his wife Elisabeth are not farmers, nor do they want to be. So they convinced actual farmers in Idaho, Oregon and Nevada to grow teff for them. The Carlsons milled(碾磨)it themselves.

Until last year though, there was not a single Ethiopian restaurant in the entire state of Idaho to buy the milled flour. And that is how the business slowly grew for many years, serving the

Ethiopian and Eritrean community in the U.S..

Wayne says teff production has increased over the past decade in the U.S.. The grain has gone from 1,200 hectares in 2007 to more than 40,000 by 2014. He says most teff grown in the U.S. is fed to farm animals. In Idaho, however, more of the teff production is for human food. Teff contains lots of calcium(钙), iron, and fiber.

24.After settling in southwest Idaho, Wayne Carlson decided to ________.

A.become a farmer B.get married there

C.do public health work D.introduce teff to America

25.Why was the teff business not good in the beginning?

A.Teff has an earthy taste. B.The flour was very expensive.

C.Few places needed the milled flour. D.American people knew little about it. 26.The teff grown in the U.S. is mainly used to ________.

A.feed farm animals B.make human food

C.make calcium, iron and fiber D.serve the Ethiopian community

In a new move, doctors are using feature films in order to encourage their patients to talk more freely about their problems. Supporters of “film therapy(疗法)” say that discussing characters and plot lines from a proper film can help people to understand their feelings better.

One of those using the method is Bernie Wooder, a doctor from Elstree, who charges £45 for a one-hour “film therapy” session. He said, “I was treating a woman who had been badly let down in a relationship, and who was experiencing such strong feelings that it was difficult for her to speak about them. I told her that her situation reminded me of On the Waterfront, when Marlon Brando's character realizes his brother is dishonest and he feels a great sense of betrayal(背叛). My patient identified so easily with him that she started to cry. Watching and discussing the film unlocked all the feelings she had buried. Each time she watched and cried, she felt better.”

Mr Wooder admits that film therapy does not work for everyone, but says he has used it successfully with about a third of his clients. “Through the films' characters, plots and even music, it allows people to face their problems.” He said that Falling Down, in which Michael Douglas plays the part of an unemployed man who is so frustrated(沮丧的)that he uses violence, was an example of the dangerous implications of not letting anger go. “I used this film with a patient who was very upset because he was holding on to a lot of the anger he felt towards people who had frustrated him,” said Mr Wooder. “We talked about Michael Douglas's character and the disastrous path he takes, and my patient then realized that he needed to let go of his feelings more regularly so as not to erupt(爆发)like a time bomb.”

27.What can we learn about Bernie Wooder?

A.He used to be an actor. B.He likes to review different films.

C.He is good at sharing his feelings. D.He is in support of “film therapy”. 28.Why did the patient cry when she watched On the Waterfront?

A.She missed her brother. B.She was moved by the film.

C.She realized she had been cheated. D.She thought of her sufferings.

29.What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 mean?

A.income B.situation

C.outcome D.position

30.What does the text mainly tell us?

A.Film stars have problems too.

B.Films can help unlock feelings.

C.Watching films can help you relax.

D.The public should pay more attention to films.

I worked from the time when I was four and raised seven children, all of them college graduates. It seemed I'd done everything I'd ever wanted to do in my life, but I had one regret. I was born in 1898, the oldest of five kids. Papa couldn't spare me to go to school, so I worked in the fields with him till I was 21 years old.

Everywhere I went, I learned some hard lessons about what happens to a man who even can't read the alphabet. People cheat you out of wages. They sell you a ticket to one city, take your money and hand you a ticket to somewhere else.

By 1928, I'd been wandering for nine years. I met a woman named Elzenia. We fell in love, married and moved to Dallas, where I got work fixing roads for the city. When Amelia, the oldest of our seven childre n, first went to school, I took my wife aside. “Elzenia,” I said. “I don't want the kids to know I can't read or write.”

In 1938, one day my boss called me in. “George,” he said. “No one knows those machines like you do. I'd like to promote you.” But my thrill and surprise were cut short when he said, “Fill out this application and we'll get you a raise.” I couldn't admit the truth. I thanked him and walked out of his office. I did stay right where I was, until I turned 65 and my boss made me retire. But I didn't stop working. For the next 25 years, I lived a happy life, but it still seemed to me like something was missing.

A young fellow handed me a piece of paper. It's information about adult education classes. People can learn to read and write. Now I'm 98. I thought of my friends and neighbours and what they might think if they found out I couldn't read. After all these years, my secret would be out. But all my life I've wanted to read. It was high time for action.

Paragraph 1:

The young man drove me to a huge building and led me into a spacious classroom, which was

crowded with elderly people like me. Through chatting, I learned that they had all been longing to

read and write but never had the chance to go to school. As the bell rang, in came the teacher, a

woman well past forty. After a warm and brief greeting, we started our lesson. First we learned to

read the alphabet and though I made mistakes at times, no one laughed at me. Everyone helped

each other with open-hearted enjoyment.

Paragraph 2:

I'm still going to school. Though faced with the most challenging event of my life, I'm full of

courage and confidence. With the generous help of my teacher, friends and my children, I have

made huge progress in study. Now I'm never shy about admitting the truth that once I was not able

to read or write at all. Besides, I'm eager to encourage more elderly people to attend the adult

education classes, because it's never too late to learn.
