There is a place on our earth where hot water and steam come up under the ground. It is on a large island in the Pacific Ocean. The island is North Island in New Zealand.

The planet on which we live is a ball of very hot rock. It is a good thing for us that the

outside shell is cold. If it were not, no one could live here. The earth’s shell has cracks in it in some places. In New Zealand this shell seems to have more cracks than in other places on the earth. There are spots where the ground is so hot that it burns the bottom of your shoes. In some places, hot water shoots into the air from time to time. At other points, you can see steam coming up from pools of hot water. The people who live in these places make use of the heat that comes from inside the earth. Some of them cook in the hot pools. They put food into a basket and place it into the water. Washing clothes is done in much the same way.

Many people bring the hot water from below the earth into their homes. They do this by putting a pipe a hundred feet or more into the ground. In this way they get hot water and steam for cooking and washing, and for heating their homes.

Ever since humans have lived on the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language barrier (障碍), communication is completed through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists and the local people unable to make themselves understood by each other through speaking or writing have had to turn to this form of expressing. Many of these symbols of whole words are very lively and exact and can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot compare with them.

Body language sends ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either meaningfully or not.A wink (眨眼)can be a way of showing that the party is only joking. A nod means agreement, while shaking the head indicates disagreement.

Other forms of nonlinguistic(非语言的)language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code and smoking signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide and warn people.

All in all, while words are the most common form of communication, other systems and techniques also play the role of expressing human thoughts and feelings.

If you go into the forest with friends, stay with them. If you don’t, you may get lost. If you get lost, this is what you should do. Sit down and stay where you are. Don’t try to find your friends —let them find you. You can help them find you by staying in one place. There is another way to help your friends or other people to find you. You can shout or whistle (吹口哨) three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times again. Any signal given three times is a call for help.

Keep on shouting or whistling. Always three times altogether. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making a noise for fun. They will let you know that they have heard your signal. They will give you two shouts or two whistles. When a signal is given twice, it is an answer to a call for help. If you don’t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house with branches (树枝). Make yourself a bed

with leaves and grass.

When you need some water, you have to leave your little branch house to look for it. Don’t just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk in order to go back again easily. When you are lost, the most important thing to do is to stay in one place.

When I was in Scotland last year, I visited a special hydroelectric power station. It is inside a mountain. It rains a lot in the mountains of Scotland and there are huge lakes high up. The water falls down through large pipes to a generator(发电器)in the power station. The energy of the moving water turns the generator and this produces electricity. A big transformer(变压器)then increases the number of volts(伏特)to over 400,000. The electricity goes through cables to different parts of Scotland, England and Wales.

The inside of the power station was very clean because it doesn’t burn coal or gas. It was also very quiet. I was very surprised. It was just like being in a hospital, really.

I think hydroelectric power stations are much safer than nuclear power stations. They are also better for the earth than coal or gas power stations. Some countries like Sweden and the Netherlands have said they aren’t going to build any more nuclear power stations. They are going to try to make clean electricity using water or wind. I think we should do the same and spend more money in building hydroelectric power stations.

48. What can be the best title for the passage?

A. Future of Electricity

B. Dangers of Nuclear Power

C. Electricity in Scotland

D. Electricity from Water

49. We can learn that the underlined word “hydroelectric” means using _________.

A. the energy of the water to clean the air

B. water power to produce electricity

C. pipes to carry water

D. wind power to produce electricity

A. It looks like a hospital.

4. B 解析:why not do sth?

6. A 解析:look forward to期望,期盼。

8. B 解析:prevent… from…

hardly几乎不;mostly主要的,大部分的;already已经;at most 至多。

13. C 解析:本题考查的句型是would do sth rather than do sth,表示“宁愿做……

15. A 解析:What’s she like?

18. C 解析:倒数第二段最后一句话提到了最后一天要庆祝new year,所以这里应该是包括new year的,而不是“除了”,排除A、B和D,故选C。as well as表示“也,又”。

20. B解析:so … that …

21. B 解析:time for sth ……

be like中,like是介词,后面跟名词或动名词。as作为“像”讲时,是连词,用来连接句子;seem的结构是It seems to/that…,后面不能直接加名词。

34. C 解析:这里需要一个独立的成分,选项A,B和D不能单独使用,所以都可以排除掉;

35. B解析:这里出现的是not only … but (also) …

36. very hot rock

38. Cooking, washing clothes and heating their homes.

51.car 52. open 53. to 54. breath 55. showed

56.not 57. driving 58. situation/ scene 59. which 60. quietly
