专题八、快乐成长

(2017·广西贵港)A.

What does a typical day look like for a high school student in the United States? Well everyone’s is very different. I can describe my normal day in high school for you.

Our school day usually went from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. However, some days I had cheerleading (啦啦队) practice or play practice at 6:30 am. If I had cheerleading practice I got ready at school, and if I had time, I ate breakfast at the school dining hall.

Then I would go towards my locker and my books for the first period. Each class went for about 50 minutes and we had 4 minutes to get to the next class. We studied everything from science to math and Spanish to PE.

I played the flute(长笛) in band, so one of my class periods was used for that. Lunchtime would be at 12:30 pm and then we had some time to hang out outside or by our lockers. At the end of the day there was a seminar (研讨会) period. It could be used for studying or meetings.

After school, I would cheer at a basketball game, be a lifeguard(救生员) at work or has speech practice. My family always tried to have dinner together at around 7 pm, but there was always time. I would finally start studying at around 8 or 9 pm.

So there you have it! That’s my typical day in high school.

Some parents are used to doing almost everything for their children. They see their older children as babies all the time! It can be a very common problem in China, because most parents only have one child in China. Dear Headmaster,

Lately our class has become worried about the environment at the back of the school and we would like to do something to make it more attractive. We have done some research and have come up with a plan. With the help of our parents, we can do most of the work ourselves, but we will need some money for plants and paint. I am writing to ask the school for permission to do this work and to ask if the school could donate $1,000 towards our project.

We would like to turn the empty land at the back of the school into a garden. We would plant trees, grass, flowers and make paths through the garden. It would also attract birds, insects and small animals which students could then study in science classes.

We would also like to paint the back wall of the school that faces the new garden. Some of our art classes could then paint a huge picture on it.

Lastly, we would like to paint all rubbish bins. At the moment they look old and the paint is coming off. If we paint them in bright, attractive colours, students might be more likely to use them. We think our plan would greatly improve the back of the school. We have already asked our parents and they have promise to donate one weekend of their time to help us complete the project.

We hope you will give us permission for this project and will be able to donate the $1,000 we need. When we have finished the work, we hope you will join us in a celebration morning tea so that the whole school can thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly (蝴蝶). The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis (蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn’t struggle (挣扎;奋斗)to leave the chry salis, it can’t fly! The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges of life bring out the best in young people and make them fly.

When people are young, meeting and overcoming challenges will make them strong and ready to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many big supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father’s death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.

Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some

parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock-climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.

A. wake up

B. give up

C. grow up

D. bring up

59. What is the writer trying to do in this passage?

A. Describe where a butterfly comes from.

Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally

about what to believe or what to do. According to a report on the

World Economic Forum(2016) , critical thinking, creativity, and

their practical application (n.应用) are widely accepted as the top

three skills that yooung people need to possess (v.拥有) in their

future career.

A good critical thinker usually takes the following steps before he dicides what to do. Whenever he needs to do something, he would, first of all, reason. He checks why he needs to do it and whether he really needs to do it. Then, analyze. He tries to find out what is really is and the best way to do it. After that, evaluate. He makes sure whether he is able to do it and how to do it well. Finally, he makes the decisi on and takes actions. Take the “Double 11” (a popular online shopping day in China) as an example. A few days before it, he check carefully what he needs and whether he really needs them, and makes a shopping list. He goes to the online shops to compare the quality and the prices of the things that he is going to buy. He compares the shops that sell these things. Then he checks whether he can afford them and in which shops he is going to buy them. Although it takes him some time to make the decisions, he would not regret after the shopping.

Then what would happen if he didn’t think critically before he made the decisions? After the crazy “Double 11”, there were usually a lot of complaints on the Internet. There were regrets about buying more things than they needed. There were complaints about the poor quality and the prices of the things they bought. There were also complaints because they received wrong things or simply received nothing. There were all kinds of regrets and complaints. Why so? They had not thought critically before they made the decisions.

Critical thinking helps you make wiser decisions. It helps you avoid wasting time, money and so on. Therefore, do look before you leap.

A. helps make better choices

B. will appear in the future

D. He checks how much money he has.

35. The underlined word “complaint” means that the people ______.

I remember the green coat in my fifth and sixth grades.

When I need a new jacket, my mother asked what kind I wanted. I described something like bikers wear. She listened long. I thought she understood for sure the kind I wanted.

The next day when I got home from school, I discovered , on my bed, a jacket which was not what I had expected. I went close t the jacket slowly, as if it were a stranger.

From the kitchen mother shouted that my jacket was in the closet. I rushed and pulled at the clothes in the closet, hoping the jacket on the bed wasn’t for me but my b rother. No luck. And so I went, in my jacket. So embarrassed, so hurt,I couldn’t even do my lessons the rest of the day. I received Cs on tests.

I blamed(指责) that jacket for those bad years. I blamed my mother for her bad taste and her cheap ways. It was a sad time for the heart. Anyway,I spent my sixth-grade year, looking forward to something good to happen to me.

I’m not the kind of mother who often brushes her daughter’s hair, and my daughter has never liked sitting quietly long enough for me to do it.

But today, I took a chair outside and let my daughter Kitty sit on it. She was sitting high with her eyes closed, skin still wet from the shower and her messy hair behind her back. I realized she was taking in ever touch from my hands. Today we would send Kitty away for a week of a summer camp. This was all my idea. She’s nearly 12, and I notice that I’m with my child nearly 24 hours a day. Living on the farm without neighbours, Kitty has become increasingly dependent (依赖的) on me.

After lunch, we drove to the camp place. After we got out of the car, we were introduced to the other children. Kitty followed me closely, holding my hand all the time. “I need you for a few more minutes.” she said to me, horror in her eyes.

I pulled away and walked up to a camp worker. “Excuse me.” I said loudly, “I’d like to introduce you to my daughter. Maybe you could help her meet a few of these kids.” He came over to talk to Kitty and I kissed on her face. Then we all disappeared before Kitty realized we had left.

On my way home, I felt a piece of my soul (灵魂) had been taken away from my body. I began to shake. Tears came down my face. When I arrived home, I calmed down and reminded myself why I chose this path. “I want Kitty to have a chance to find herself, out of my shadow (影子). My 14-year-old son, John, and I saw the coat at the same time in a second-hand clothing store. It stood out among big and old coats. It was so beautiful and had an unbelievable price, $28. I looked at my son and we both said nothing, but John’s eyes shone. Dark, woolen coats were popular with teenage boys, but new ones could cost several hundred dollars. This coat was even better. John tried it on and turned from side to side, eyeing himself in the mirror. It fit him so well.

John wore the coat to school the next day. After he came home, I asked, “Did the kids like your coat?”

“They love i t,” he said with a big grin.

Over the next few weeks, John changed. He was polite, less argumentative, more thoughtful, and much happier. “Good dinner, mom,”he would say every evening. Without a word of complaining, he would carry in wood for the stove. One day when I suggested that he might start on his homework before dinner, John, who always put things off, said, “You’re right. I guess I will.”When I mentioned this change to one of his teachers, she joked that the coat must have changed him.

John and I both know we should never judge a person by his clothes. But it is true that when wearing beautiful and suitable clothes, we may try to be better in thought, speech and behavior to match what is on the inside to what is on the outside.

A. The price of the coat was too high.

B. John liked the coat very much.

A. A wide smile.

B. A worried look.

A. Start at once.

B. Put off his homework.

C. Work hard on schoolwork.

49. Which of the following changes did NOT happen to John after he wore the coat?

A. He was willing to follow suggestions.

B. He often helped to do some housework.

C. He always worried about his study.

D. He said sweet words to make his mother happy.

50. What does the writer want to say through this passage?

A. What we wear could help what we are.

C. We should not judge people by their appearance.

D. It’s a good choice to try different things in our lives.
