Still seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college.

King’s Art Centre

A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibitio n of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend sees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists.

You could attend a class teaching you how to ‘learn from the masters’ or get more creative with paint – free of charge.

The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee. The Botanic Garden

The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University.

The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.

Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals.

The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes i n the lake. A snake called ‘Hissing Sid’ is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.

Byron’s Pool

Many stories surround Lord Byron’s t ime as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of “mess and drunkenness”. However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I’m not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his rooms.

He spent a great deal of time walking in the village. It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, wh ich is now known as Byron’s Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don’t trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf ,a famous writer,—over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool.

1.The main idea of the passage is __________.

A. interesting stories of Lord. Byron

B. an approach to becoming creative in art

C. the colorful life in the countryside

D. some places for weekend break

2.If you are a wildlife enthusiast, you’d better go to__________.

B. the Botanic Garden

When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation .

I suggested that they should stay at ‘bed and breakfast’houses, because this kind

of place gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories “We didn’t stay at bed and breakfast houses,” they said, “because we found most families were away o n holiday.”

I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought ‘VACANCIES’ meant ‘holidays’, because the Spanish word for ‘holidays’ is ‘vacaciones’. So they did not go to house where t he sign outside said ‘VACANCLES’, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said ‘NO VACANCLES’, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels! We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word ‘DIVERSION’ means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you mus t take a different road. When my friends saw the word ‘DIVERSION’ on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hold.

English people have proble ms too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said “Thank you” in French.

I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise, the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that “Thank you” in French means “No, thank you.”

5. My Spanish friends wanted advice about ______.

A. learning English

B. finding places to stay in England

C. driving their car on English roads

D. going to England by car

6. ‘NO VACANCIES’ in English means ______.

A. no free rooms

B. free rooms

C. not away on holiday

D. holidays

7. When someone offered me more coffee and I said “Thank you” in French, I ______.

A didn’t really want any more coffee B. wanted them to take the coffee pot away

C. really wanted some more coffee

D. wanted to express my politeness

8. I was surprised when the coffee pot was taken away because I ______.

A. hadn’t finished drinking my coffee

B. was expecting another cup of coffee

C. meant that I didn’t want any more

D. was never misunderstood

A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off(打盹)—if it is milked from a cow at night.

Res earchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin, which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.

The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.

Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less an xious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.

Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.

While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.

Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.

Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

9. According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk_______.

A. were more anxious

B. woke up later

C. were less active

D. started sleep more easily

10. Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text?

A. It’s been tested on mice for ten times.

B. It’s used in sleeping drugs.

C. It can make people more energetic.

D. It exists in milk in great amount.

11. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Milk Drinking and Health

B. An Experiment on Mice

C. Fat, Sugar and Health

D. Night Milk and Sleep

D

Parents have to do much less for their children today than they used to do,and home has become much less of a workshop. Clothes can be bought ready made; washing can go to the laundry; food can be bought, cooked, canned or preserved; bread is baked and delivered by the baker; milk arrives on the doorstep; meats can be had at the restaurant, the worker’s canteen, and the school dining-room.

It is unusual now for father to pursue his trade or other employment at home, and his children rarely,if ever, see him at his place of work. Nowadays boys are seldom t rained to follow their father’s occupation, and in many towns they have a fairly wide choice of employmen t and so do girls. The young wage-earner often earns good money, and soon acquires a feeling of economic independence. In textile (纺织物) areas it has long been customary for mothers to go out to work, but this practice has become so widespread that the working mother is now a not unusual factor in a child’s home life, the number of married women in employment having more than doubled in the last twenty-five years. With mother earning and his older children drawing substantial wages, father is seldom the dominant(占主导的) figure that he still was at the beginning of the century. When mother works, economic advantages increasing, but children lose something of grea t value if mother’s employment prevents her from being home to greet them when they return from school.

12. The writer mentions home as workshop in the past because______.

A. fathers often pursue employment at home

B. parents had to make food and necessity by themselves

C. many families produce goods at home for sale

D. both fathers and mothers in most families are workers

13. The chief reason that boys are seldom trained to follow their father’s

occupation is that ____.

A. children rarely see their fathers at their place of work

B. fathers do not like to pursue employment at home

C. there is a wide choice of employment for children

D. children also like to have jobs and earn money outside

14. What makes father no longer the only dominant person in a family?

A. Mother’s and children’s earning enable them not just to depend on father for life.

B. There are many choices of employment for mothers and children nowadays.

C. Father does much less for his children and earn much less today than he used to.

D. The number of married women in employment has increased greatly now.

15. What is the writer’s attitude towards the change at home ?

A. Unacceptable.

B. Worried.

C. Unconcerned.

D. Interested.

As is known to all, with t he improvement of people’s living standards, cars have become a popular means of transport, bringing great convenience to our life. However, they have also caused some problems such as air pollution and traffic jams.

How can we solve the pro blems then ? As far as I’m concerned, bicycles are a good solution. For one thing, bicycles don’t need any petrol and they are energy-saving. For another, bicycles are environmentally friendly be cause they won’t give off waste gas. What’s more, riding bicycle s is a good way for us to exercise and it is beneficial to our health.

Therefore, let’s take the responsibility to build up a low-carbon city by riding bicycles. Come on and join us!

But I quickly found myself facing the same roadblocks that had caused me to quit before: I was confused with college-level algebra and a heavy workload of reading and writing assignment. Moreover, I was unsure of my career direction. I was ready to drop out again. Then a smartly-dressed woman walked confidently to the front of my English composition class. “Look at you! Look at each and every one of you,” she said. “You’re here to change your lives for the better. And you’re going to make it!” I can’t remember the rest of the speech, but it changed the course of my college career and my life. Mrs. Smith didn’t know me from any of the other 40 faces in her classroom, but I felt she speaking directly to me. Having trouble keeping up with the workload? Break it down into small pieces, and set up a schedule that suits you. If college algebra is too difficult, drop back to introductory college math. As for English composit ion, she gave us writing assignments we could relate to. “Go for the best, kid. You’re worth it,” she’d say. I graduated from that college and went on to get my bachelor’s degrees. Today, as a college instructor, each fall when I stand in front of a new class, I think of Mrs. Smith and how much teachers can affect their students. She couldn’t have known it when she gave that pep talk, but she made a huge difference in my life. 4. Why did the author want to quit school again? A. He wanted to return to hid former job. B.
