The world welcomes the new year! From New Zealand to New York, the world eagerly celebrated the New Year, hoping for a better future after a year of diseases, struggles and disasters.

The islands of Samoa mid Tokelau in the Pacific Ocean and places located near the International Date Line mark the dawn of the New Year. As celebrations spread westward, fireworks lit up the night sky in towns and cities around the world, as celebrators partied on the streets.

In some parts of the world, the New Year’s celebrations were, lets say, rather unusual. In many European countries as well as in Coney Island, New York, swimmers braved freezing water temperatures for a dip in the ocean or lake on January 1. In Rome, Italy, divers jumped off the 59-foot-high Cavour bridge into the Tiber River. Londoners rang in the New Year with a massive fireworks display with dozens of rockets lighting up the night sky. The Scots’ celebration of New Year is also called “Hogmanay”. A torchlight procession led by men dressed as Vikings kicks off four days of Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh, Scotland. The procession ends with the burning of a Viking long ship. Hogmanay is the Scottish word for the last day of the year. Street festivals are held on each day culminating in a fireworks display.

One of the clerks, Charlie, was alw ays wearing his glasses but he didn’t one day. I asked him about it a nd he said they’d been out of order and that he couldn’t afford a new pair. His family needed money. It was obvious that he was having a difficult time.

We wanted to help him, so we turned to our own eye doctor for assistance with a pla n. We had his secretary contact him, asking him to come in for an eye exam for free. We told the doctor to let him order whatever glasses he wanted and that we would pay for them. Although Charlie questioned what was going on, the doctor just told him that someone had offered the money for his new glasses. When we went in to pay the bill, the doctor told us he was so touched by our idea that he waived the exam fee and only charged us for half the price of the glasses!

(2016·无锡辅仁中学检测)English is a language particularly rich in idioms—those modes of expression peculiar to a language (or dialect) that frequently defy(蔑视) logical and grammatical rules. Without idioms English would lose much of its variety and humor both in speech and writing while using it properly. With idioms people will not only strengthen the ability to express all sorts of ideas but also the ability to appreciate culture, which then improves the linguistic ability. English idioms relate so closely to English culture that they are like a drop in the ocean of English culture and reflect the significance of English culture throughout history.

Customs are a kind of social phenomenon. They are not the product of individuals but that of the collective in the society, which are affected by politics, economy, religion, literary art and so on and then affect those things in reverse. English idioms are thus greatly influenced by English customs, which concern almost every respect of social life. As a special part of culture, language, especially idioms, inevitably reflects the customs of the nationality. There is no exception to English idioms.

In the old days the written language (novels, poems, plays and the Bible) was the source on which idioms were based. This was the case up until World War Ⅱ. After the war new mediums had appeared in English-speaking society, and there was a channel for the American way of life and the popular culture of the U.S. TV, movies and nowadays the interactive medium have changed the English language more to the American English direction.

How then does American English differ from British English in the use of idioms? There are no radical differences in actual use. The main differences are in the situations where idiomatic expressions are used. There have been many studies recently on this subject. American English adopts and creates new idioms at a much faster rate compared to British English. Also the idioms of American English origin seem to spread faster and further. After it has first been established in the U.S., an American idiom may soon be found in other variants (变体)and dialects of English. Nowadays new British idioms seem to stay on the British Isles and are rarely encountered in the U.S. British idioms are in fact more familiar to other Europeans or to the people of the British Commonwealth than to Americans, even though the language is same. The future of idiomatic expressions in the English language seems certain. They are more and more based on American English. This development will continue through new mediums like the Internet and interactive mediums. It is hard to say what this will do to idioms and what kind of new idioms are created. This will be an interesting development to follow, and by no means does it lessen the humor, variety and color of English language.

I was doing a weekend seminar (研讨会) at the Deerhurst Lodge, north of Toronto. On Friday night a tornado swept through a town north of us called Barrie, killing dozens of people and doing millions of dollars worth of damage. Sunday night, as I was coming home, I stopped the car when I got to Barrie. I got out on the side of the highway and looked around. It was a mess. Everywhere I looked there were smashed houses and cars turned upside dow n.

That same night Bob Templeton was driving down the same highway. He stopped to look at the disaster just as I had; only his thoughts were different than my ow n. Bob was the vice-president of Telemedia Communications, which owns a string of radio stations in Ontario and Quebec. He thought there must be something we could do for these people with the radio stations they had.

The following night I was doing another seminar in Toronto. Bob Templeton and Bob Johnson, another vice-president from Telemedia, came in and stood in the back of the room. They shared their conviction (信念) that there had to be something they could do for the people in Barrie.

After the seminar we went back to Bob’s office. He was now committed (坚定的) to the idea of helping the people who had been caught in the tornado.

The following Friday he called all the executives (执行委员会) at Telemedia into his office. At the top of a flip chart (海报) he wrote three 3s. He said to his executives, “How would you like to raise 3 million dollars 3 days from now in just 3 hours and give the money to the people in Barrie?”There was nothing but silence in the room.

Finally someone said, “Templeton, you’re crazy. There is no way we could do that.”

Bob said, “Wait a minute. I didn’t ask you if we could or even if we should. I just asked you if you’d like to.”

They all said, “Sure we’d like to.”He then drew a large ‘T’underneath the 333. On one side he wrote, “Why we can’t.”On the other side he wrote, “How we can.”

“I’m going to put a big X on the ‘Why we can’t’side. We’re not going to spend any time on the ideas of why we can’t. That’s of no value. On the other side we’re going to write down every idea that we can come up with on how we can. We’re not going to leave the room until we figure it out.” There was silence again.

Finally, someone said, “We could do a radio show across Canada.”

Bob said, “That’s a great idea, ”and wrote it dow n. Before he had it written, someone said, “You can’t do a radio show across Canada. We don’t have radio stations across Canada.”That was a pretty valid (有效的) objection. They only had stations in Ontario and Quebec.

Templeton replied, “That’s_why_we_can._That_stays.” But this was a real strong objection because radio stations are not very compatible (和谐相处的). They usually don’t work together. They are very cutthroat. They fight each other. To get them to work together would be virtually impossible according to the standard way of thinking.

All of a sudden someone said, “We could get Harvey Kirk and Lloyd Robertson, the biggest names in Canadian broadcasting, to anchor (主持) the show.”(That would be like getting Tom Brokaw and Sam Donaldson to anchor the show. They are anchors on national TV. They are not going to go on radio.) At that point, it was absolutely amazing how fast and furious the creative ideas began to flow.

That was on a Friday. The following Tuesday they had a radiothon (广播募捐). They had fifty radio stations all across the country that agreed to broadcast it. It didn’t matter who got the credit as long as the people in Barrie got the money. Harvey Kirk and Lloyd Robertson anchored the show

and they succeeded in raising three million dollars in three hours within three business days!

You see, you can do anything if you put your focus on how to do it rather than on why you can’t.

(2016·常州高三质检)“New normal” is a popular term referring to China’s current economy. It means the Chinese economy has entered a new phase that is different from the high-speed growth pattern exhibited in the past. It is a new trend that features more sustainable, mid-to-high-speed growth with higher efficiency and lower costs.

During the new normal state, the growth slowdown from a high rate of around 10 percent to now about 7 to 8 percent is unavoidable.

The economy will also undergo comprehensive and fundamental changes. The service industry will gradually become a backbone(中坚) of the national economy and consumption will be the main source of demand. Along with that process of restructuring, some industries will suffer from the problem of over-productivity. Meanwhile, some new growth points will spring up.

Meanwhile the Chinese economy will transform from the production investment-driven model into an innovation-driven model. The prolonged difficulties facing manufacturing(制造业) industries show China can no longer rely on low cost production factors, as the prices of labor, resources and land are rising. Technological innovation must become the main driving force.

Under the new normal state, the service sectors will provide more new jobs than the manufacturing industries. In 2012, the latter industry created about 980 jobs while creating 100 million yuan of gross domestic product. The service industry can make 1,200 new jobs. The rise of service sectors’proportion will increase GDP and create more jobs.

Authorities need to increase people’s income, especially the low-income group, who shows stronger buying power. The government will also have to cover all citizens with a basic social welfare net. Without a boost (提升) in income it would be difficult to boost consumption.

Before the“new normal”state, the Chinese economy overwhelmingly relied on investment and export. The changes of foreign demand and investment caused fluctuations(波动) in the economy. The periodic fluctuations will become milder under the new normal state in which the economy relies more on consumption. The stabilization of economic growth will also stabilize the price of goods. The consumer price index(CPI) only increased 2.6 percent in the past two years, and 2.3 percent in the first half of this year.

Innovation will become the most irreplaceable driving force for the restructuring of the Chinese economy. Growth quality and efficiency will be higher on the agenda of enterprises and the society as a whole.

In general, the new normal state can boost China to transform its growth model, overcome the “middle-income trap”,and maintain mid-and-high-speed growth for a considerably long time.

Chinese city bans Christmas celebrations in schools

In recent decades, celebrating Christmas has become trendy among young Chinese, who see the Christian festival as a merry time to shop, party and dine with their friends and significant others. Meanwhile, supporters of traditional Chinese culture have warned against cultural invasion since young people are more willing to celebrate Western festivals than Chinese traditional ones.

Therefore, schools of Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province banned Christmas celebrations this year, which is meant to guide schools in stressing the importance of China’s traditional festivals.

“No middle school, primary school or kindergarten may hold any Christmas-themed activity or celebration,”according to the notice issued by the city’s educational authority, adding that the rule should be enforced strictly.

The purpose of the Christmas ban is not to abandon all Western festivals, but to change the schools’ obsession(热衷于) with Western festivals at the expense of Chinese ones, said Zheng Shangzhong of the city’s educational bureau.“Schools have more of a responsibility to tell children the meaning of traditional festivals such as the Lantern Festival, Dragon Boat Festival and Lunar New Year, ”he said. He also worried that Chinese traditional festivals and culture were fading away as more Chinese accept and worship Western traditions.

One possible version:

With the growing popularity of Christmas celebrations among young people in China, schools of Wenzhou have banned Christmas celebrations of any form to stress the importance of traditional Chinese festivals.

From my perspective, there is no need to reject Christmas celebrations, as it is just a merry holiday when people get together and have fun with each other like our spring festival.

As for me and my friends, we are all fond of celebrating Christmas. We can express our love and gratitude to our beloved ones by calling or texting them with best wishes. Meanwhile, exchanging small gifts and giving wonderful performances in school can contribute to a harmonious atmosphere to relax ourselves from the stressful study as well as strengthen our friendship. More importantly, we have more opportunities to get to know various cultures and customs of foreign countries. To some extent, more cultural exchanges can be promoted and more cultural differences can be reduced as well.

Though it has become a trend for Chinese young people to observe Western festivals in various ways, we shouldn’t go too far or do something crazy about them but come to understand their real origins or meanings. In the meantime, as Chinese, we should stick to the culture of our nation and treasure our traditional festivals. Therefore, I advocate that we should know more about the significance of the traditional festivals and make it a law to celebrate them.

There are quite a few things that are not done, or that do not exist on the island —quite a few "No's". There is no pollution, for instance. No dogs are permitted in Reykjavik, the capital. There is no television on Thursdays or during the entire month of July, and only three hours of black-and-white TV the rest of the time. There is no hard liquor on Wednesdays and no beer at any time. There are no handguns; only one jail of thirty-five cells in the entire land —an admirable figure, even for a small country of 313,376 people. There is no army, air force or navy. There is no tipping for anything. There are no large stores open on Saturdays or Sundays. Since Iceland is situated just under the Arctic Circle, there is no darkness in summer and no daylight in winter. But thanks to Gulf Stream, the climate is rather mild, with temperatures ranging from 34 degrees Fahrenheit to 52 degrees in July. The rules on television, liquor, and guns are the result of governmental decision. But the absence of pollution is due in great part to the fact that Iceland gets its power from the enormous geyser(间歇泉and the thousands of hot springs that come out of the ground. They provide all the energy needed by the country. In fact, Iceland uses only 3 percent of all its available power. 2017高考英语阅读练习题3

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。 A Men have always believed that they are smarter than women. Now, a study has found that while this is certainly true, men also have to deal with the fact that they are also more stupid than the fairer sex. In the study, scientists measured the IQ of 2500 brothers and sisters and they found an uneven number of men not only in the top two percent, but also in the bottom two percent. The study's participants were tested on science, maths, English and mechanical abilities. Though there were twice as many men as women in the smartest group, there were also twice as many men among the dolts. The aggregate scores of men and women were similar. One of the study's authors, psychology professor Timothy Bates, said that the phenomenon may be because men have always been expected to be high achievers and women have been restricted to spend more time taking care of their home. "The female developmental program may be tilted more towards ensuring survival and the safety of the middle ground.," the Daily Mail quoted Professor Bates, of Edinburgh University, as saying. The research tallies with past results that men were more likely than women to receive first class University degrees or thirds and women secured the seconds. It has been said that men are more ready to take risk when it comes to academics. Women have always found to be steadier in their learning. A past study has shown that women are securing more firsts and seconds, while men are continuing to receive more thirds. The argument for the change is that the increase of coursework at the cost of exams favors women's steady approach. 1. The purpose of the passage is to tell us that ________. A. man are smarter then women B. man are more stupid the women C. a new fact about the IQ of men and women has been found D. men are more likely to receive first class university degrees 2. According to Timothy Bates, less women are in the smartest group because _________. A. they are born stupid B. they have to spend more time to tale care of their home than men C. they don’t like to take risk D. they are not expected to be high achievers 3. The underlined word tallies with in the eighth paragraph means________. A. agree with B. deal with C. go against D. go with 4. It can be inferred from the passage that______. A. Women are steadier in their learning. B. men are more ready to take risk in everything C. women are securing more firsts and seconds D. women are doing much better in academy 5. Which of the following questions has NOT been discussed in the passage? A. Why are men smarter than women?

训练4 议论文 A (2016·威海二模) It's Nice to be Home 1 I have been fortunate enough to make trips to many countries. They were wonderful adventures filled with new sights and experiences. And my wife and I have another trip in the planning stages. We're home now and have settled back into our daily routine of life. 2 I find that when I am at home, particularly for a while when we have just returned from a trip,I feel very comfortable.Perhaps it is because everything around me is familiar and the daily routine is so much the same I can move through it almost without thinking. 3 Perhaps it is because we can have meals at home instead of always being in restaurants, although it's nice to let someone else do the cooking, and because I can sleep in my own bed. There are times I think it would be nice to simply stop travelling and stay home and I'm sure I would be very comfortable if that were to happen. 4 Yet I guess I am probably a restless soul because I know that after I have been home for a while I will start to think about other places we might go and other things we want to see.We will travel again and we feel fortunate to be able to do so. 5 Still, one of the best things about travelling for me is coming home.I'm very comfortable here at home even if it is difficult to say exactly why. A.I like to travel very much. B.I enjoy local food while travelling. C.I like being home, for whatever reason. D.Perhaps it is because our friends are here. E.And I enjoy my daily life at home so much. F.We want to see as much of the world as we can.
