Before becoming a Special Olympics coach, she had limited knowledge on the topic of intellectual disabilities (智障), and had the mistaken impression that people with intellectual disabilities couldn’t do very much, let alone learn how to skate. When she accepted an invitation to attend the 2001 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Alaska, she said the athletes’ability took her breath away. “I couldn’t believe it. They were good! I couldn’t take my eyes off them.”When she got back home to China, Yao signed up to be a coach.

The athlete, her parents and I were jumping for joy. The athlete accomplished something she never thought she could do. As a coach, I never felt so proud of anyone in my life.”

She meets them at competitions. And if they live far away, Li chats with them online. ”Ma said that the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games were the best thing that happened to China. “Thanks to those Games, more people are paying attention to those with intellectual disabilities and want to do something to help them,” said Ma.

(2015·盐城三模)High-tech glasses developed at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis may help surgeons visualize cancer cells, which glow blue when viewed through the eyewear. Cancer cells are notoriously difficult to see, even under high-powered magnification. The glasses are designed to make it easier for surgeons to distinguish cancer cells from healthy cells, helping to ensure that no tumor cells are left behind during surgery.

“We’re in the early stages of this technology, and more development and testing will be done, but we’re certainly encouraged by the potential benefits to patients,” said breast surgeon Julie Margenthaler, MD, an associate professor of surgery at Washington University. “Imagine what it would mean if these glasses got rid of the need for follow-up surgery and the associated pain, inconvenience and anxiety.”

Current standard of care requires surgeons to remove the tumor and some neighboring tissue that may or may not include cancer cells. The samples are sent to a pathology(病理) lab and viewed under a microscope. If cancer cells are found in neighboring tissue, a second surgery is often recommende d to remove additional tissue that is also checked for the presence of cancer.

The glasses could reduce the need for additional surgical procedures and following stress on patients, as well as time and expense.

Margenthaler said about 20 to 25 percent of breast cancer patients who have lumps removed

require a second surgery because current technology doesn’t adequately show the extent of the disease during the first operation.“Our hope is that this new technology will reduce or ideally eliminate the need for a second surgery,” she said.

In a study published in the Journal of Biomedical Optics, researchers noted that tumors as small as 1 mm in diameter (the thickness of about 10 sheets of paper) could be detected.

Ryan Fields, MD, a Washington University assist ant professor of surgery and surgeon of Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center, plans to wear the glasses later this month when he operates to remove a melanoma from a patient. He said he welcomes the new technology, which theoretically could be used to visualize any type or cancer.

“A limitation of surgery is that it’s not always clear to the naked eye the distinction between normal tissue and cancerous tissue,” Fields said.“With the glasses developed by Samuel Achilefu, PhD, professor of Washington University, we can better identify the tissue that must be removed.”

5.The ultimate goal of developing the new technology is ________.

A.to distinguish cancer cells from healthy ones

B.to inspire hope for life in cancer patients

C.to make sure no cancer cell is left behind

D.to reduce the risk of cancer surgery

6.The underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to ________.

A.meet B.remove

C.feel D.resist

7.What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The glasses are developed by Ryan Fields and Samuel Achilefu.

B.The glasses glow blue when finding tissues including cancer cells.

C.Tumors as small as 1 cm in diameter could be detected by the glasses.

D.Much remains to be done before the technology can be widely used.

8.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Special glasses help surgeons“see” cancer

B.A new tech nology has been used in surgery

C.Patients will benefit from a new technology

D.Cancer is no longer a threat to people

根据第二段第一句中的“We’re in the early stages of this technology, and more development and testing will be done”可知,这一技术尚未得到广泛利用,因此它处于研究初期,需要进行更多的改进和测试工作,因此D项符合题意。故选D。

根据第一段第一句中的“High-tech glasses developed at Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis may help surgeons visualize cancer cells”并结合下文内容可知,文章介绍的是一种特别的眼镜,它可以帮助外科医生“看见”癌细胞,因此“Special glasses help surgeons’see’cancer”最适合作为最佳标题。故选A。

Travellers to developing countries should start with long-term basic health protection. This means vaccinations(疫苗接种) against polio, tetanus and hepatitis A. Other vaccinations will depend on where you are going, local conditions and your possible environment. Visitors to Yellow Fever areas such as West Africa should certainly be vaccinated against it. Check links for the latest news and don't forget your travel insurance. It's really worth the money. Water: In developing countries avoid drinking or even brushing your teeth with tap water. Drink bottled water and check that the cap is well sealed(封闭) when you buy it. Turning it upside down and watching for drops is one method of checking. If you can't buy it, purify it by boiling. Do not take ice in your drinks, unless it is frozen mineral water. Tea, coffee, and soft drinks are fine from the bacteria point of view, though not so fine from a thirst point of view. Don't share water bottles with other travellers unless you want to share their bacteria too. Water filters (过滤器) are OK in theory but can break easily and usually don't filter some serious bacteria, such as hepatitis A and E. Force yourself to drink clean water, lots of it, if you want to avoid headaches and tiredness from a thirst. Water requirements at home are 6 glasses per day, so increase that figure by at least 3 times in tropical environment. Food: Avoid ice cream from unhealthy sources, raw fish, salad and uncooked food — unless you can peel it yourself. Most cases of diseases come from unclean food, not unclean water. Eat where it's busy. This means that the food is good or cheap or safe to eat! 1.When you plan to travel to developing countries you should first ________. A.choose countries where you will feel it convenient to travel B.make a good preparation to avoid being harmed or injured C.consider taking as much healthy food and clean water as possible D.check links for the latest news and buy your travel insurance

Thomas had achieved fame as a poet in the 1930s and had spent World War Two in London writing propaganda(宣传) films. But by 1946, after the end of the war, he needed a regular income to support his wife Caitlin, and children Llewelyn and Aeronwy.Luckily he had a new admirer in the form of Margaret Taylor, wife of noted historian and broadcaster A.J.P. Taylor.Introduced as an “entertaining guest” by a mutual friend, he had succeeded in charming Mrs Taylor, who put the family up in a summerhouse in their garden in the grounds of Magdalen College(牛津大学莫德林学院).① Thomas had a love-hate relationship with Oxford, according to his biographer Andrew Lycett. His poetry may have brought him respect and celebrity in literary circles, but in Oxford he felt at odds with his surroundings.“His father, who had been a schoolmaster in Swansea, would have liked him to go to Oxford University,” Mr Lycett explains. “When he did actually get to Oxford he wasn’t actually at the university. It was a curious period. He was in this academic environment though he wasn’t a born academic himself. But he generally enjoyed himself because he got to know some of the professors there. He wasn’t popular among them, because they thought he was a bit of a wastrel(不务正业者), so he hung out in pubs and met students.”②Thomas also took paid jobs at the BBC, regularly travelling to London and became something of a celebrity through appearing on panel show.③ “He didn’t really endear(使受垂青) himself to Professor Taylor,”Mr Lycett says.“He_overstayed_his_welcome.The professor liked to have a barrel of beer in the house and Dylan would finish it off.He just took a dislike to him, partly because, reading between the lines, his wife rather fancied this young man.”Mark Davies, an Oxford historian, says Professor Taylor disliked the poet “intensely”.“He ended up being banished(驱逐) a safe distance away from his wife,” he adds. This banishment was in the picturesque village of South Leigh, nine miles out from the city, in a house set up for Thomas by Margaret, who continued to be his proud sponsor. However, it was here that his granddaughter Hannah Ellis believes Thomas found much of the inspiration for one of his most famous works, the radio drama Under Milk Wood.“South Leigh is hugely important because that was one of those villages where he met all the different characters and it helped him arouse his passion,” she says.“The play had been a seed from when he was about 20 and I think it was that village lifestyle and all the characters that helped. He liked sitting in the corner of the pub, watching all the drama going on.Also he had somewhere quiet to work and a home. For such a long time he hadn’t settled and it was a good period in his life.”④

One likely development will be a gradual change in the family unit;the other likely development will be a change in the proportion of the nation's workforce. The ministry warned that thefts and robberies inside or near banks rose rapidly, with the victims mostly women and elderly people...It advised people not to take large amount of cash while travelling, especially during the approaching Spring Festival season, which always witnesses a large number of crimes. Theft and robbery rose rapidly;women and elderly people were mostly targeted for;people were advised to avoid taking a large amount of cash. 3.

21.By boat is the only way to get here,which is_______we arrived. A.where B.when C.why D.how 【答案】D 【解析】考查名词性从句。 By boat is the only way to get here提示可知作方式状语,就不难选出正确答案。 22.Kids shouldn’t have access to violent films because they might_______the things they see. A.indicate B.investigate C.imitate D.innovate 【答案】C 【解析】考查动词词义辨析及语境理解。 A.indicate指示;B.investigate调查;C.imitate模仿;D.innovate改革。 23.Self-driving is an area_______China and the rest of the world are on the same starting line. A.that B.where C.which D.when 【答案】B 【解析】考查定语从句。

I was driving along a high road on my way to my daughter’s school.Over my road was another road which was built like a bridge for cars coming to the other way.I was hungry so I put the bag of apples in the seat beside me and started to eat one. Suddenly I saw the cars in front of me start to move from side to side. Then my car started to shake!I didn’t know what was happening.Perhaps something had gone wrong with my car.I drove a little more slowly and then I stopped the car and at the same moment the road fell onto the car in front of me. I found myself in the dark.I couldn’t move. The bottom parts of both of my legs and my feet were hurting badly and I couldn’t move them. All around me was quiet. But above me I could hear shouts and a lot of noise. Then I memorized (记起) what had happened.I had been in an earthquake. For about two hours nobody came.Luckily I could reach the bag of apples,so at least I had plenty to eat. Then I heard people climbing towards me.A team of people had come to see if anyone was under the broken road.I called out,“I’m here!” I heard a shout.Soon a stranger climbed to the side of the road near my car.“How are you doing?” he asked.
