二、阅读理解(每题2分,共40分)

本部分共有四篇短文,每篇短文后面有四个阅读理解题,根据短文从A、B、C、D中选出最佳答案。

Passage 1

A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed of what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died.

The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, "Didn’t you hear us?" The frog explained to them that he was a little deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time.

This story teaches us two lessons:

1. There is power of life and death in the tongue. An encouraging word to someone who is down can lift them up and help them make it through the day.

2. A destructive word to someone who is down can be what it takes to kill him.

Be careful of what you say. Speak life to those who cross your path. The power of words is sometimes hard to understand because an encouraging word can go such a long way. Anyone can speak words that tend to rob another of the spirit to continue in difficult times. Special is the individual who will take the time to encourage another.

1.The expression “as good as” (in line2, paragraph 1) means ___D_______.

A. equally good

B. no better than

C. hardly

D. almost, practically

2.When other frogs told the two frogs there was no hope, the two frogs __B________.

A. gave up their efforts immediately

B. refused to notice them and tried their best to get out

C. were so afraid of the danger

D. made up their mind to stay in the pit quietly

3.One of the frogs fell down and died because _____C_____.

A.he was so tired.

B. he saw the other frogs unwilling to help him.

C.he noticed what the other frogs were saying and stopped struggling.

D.he didn’t trust himself.

4.Another frog managed to jump out of the pit because ______C____.

A. he didn’t believe what the other frogs had said

B. he was very strong physically

C. his ears were not good and he mistook their words for encouragement

D. the pit was not deep enough

5.Which of the following is TRUE?____A____

A. People should avoid saying destructive words to those who are in trouble.

B. The power of words lies in the beauty of language.

C. Words are just words and we don’t have to be careful with words.

D. An encouraging word may discourage others when they are in difficult times.

Passage 2

A couple, John and Mary, had two lovely children. John had just been asked to go on a business trip and would be gone for several days. Mary would go along too. They hired a reliable woman to care for the children and made the trip, returning home a little earlier than they had planned.

As they drove into their hometown, they noticed smoke, and they went off their usual route to see what it was. They found a home in flames. Mary said, "Well, it isn't our fire, let's go home."

But John drove closer and exclaimed, "That home belongs to Fred Jones who works at the plant. He wouldn't be off work yet, maybe there is something we could do." "It has nothing to do with us," protested Mary.

Still John drove up and stopped and they were both horror- stricken to see the whole house in flames. A woman on the lawn was screaming, "The children! Get the children!" John grabbed her by the shoulder saying, "Tell us where the children are!" "In the basement," sobbed the woman, "down the hall and to the left."

In spite of Mary's protests John bolted for the basement which was full of smoke and scorching hot. He found the door and two children. As he left he could hear some more whimpering(呜咽声). He delivered the two children into waiting arms and started back asking how many more children were down there. They told him two more and Mary grabbed his arm and screamed, "John! Don't go back! It's dangerous!"

But he ran into the smoke-filled hallway and into the room. At last he found both children. He felt that there was something strangely familiar about the little bodies clinging to him, and at last when they came out, he found that he had just rescued his own children.

The baby-sitter had left them at this home while she did some shopping...

16. John and Mary hired a woman to look after their children when ____B____.

Passage 3

I often find myself trying to explain the attraction traveling holds for me. Traveling, according to many people, is often uncomfortable and even, at least sometimes, dangerous. But one benefit of traveling is that it creates a perfect atmosphere for the observation of life, an environment that can lead to better understanding and enlightenment. Many wonderful people and places lie on the road ahead. The fact that there are obstacles as well only makes the journey more rewarding. My life and my memories will be improved after encountering these people a nd places. That’s a pretty big benefit!

Of course I could also enrich my life without traveling very far at all, but there is something about foreign lands that provides an additional fascination. I think most non-travelers are simply too distracted by things such as work, home, and friends to devote their full attention to observation of life. I'm more observant when I'm on the road and therefore, more alive. I talk to more people and listen to them carefully. I keenly notice everything about my strange new environment. I see a lot of humor that can compensate for(弥补) the misery(痛苦) of moving about.

21.Many people’s opinion about traveling is that ______D________.

A. it’s a good chance to enjoy the natural beauty.

B. it’s an eye-opening experience.

C. it’s too costly and it’s not worth the money.

D. it’s often not comfortable and sometimes not safe.

22.Which of the following is NOT TRUE?____C___

A. Traveling enables the author to observe life more easily.

B. Traveling enables the author to understand life better.

C. Traveling enables the author to know the importance of living in the same place.

D. Traveling enables the author to know many wonderful people and places

23.According to the author, ___A_______ can only make the journey more worthwhile.

A. obstacles

B. memories

C. additional fascination

D. benefit

24.According to the author, the problem with most non-travelers is that ______B________.

A. they live a busy life without having fun.

B. their attention centers so much on work, home and friends that they don’t observe life wholeheartedly.

C. they consider money-making the most important thing.

D. they can’t enrich their life because they don’t travel very far.

25.According to the author, _____B_____ can make up for the pain of going around.

A. new environment

B. humor

C. foreign lands

D. understanding

Passage 4

Today we examine what schools are doing to help students with learning disabilities. Public schools and colleges in the United States are required by law to provide help. Congress approved the Rehabilitation Act(助残法案) in 1973. This law requires schools to provide disabled students with opportunities equal to those for other students. A more recent law requires public schools to establish a program for each child found to have a disability. Schools must write, and follow, a statement called an I.E.P., an individualized education program. If not, parents may take legal action. States must provide special education services for free. Teachers with these skills are in great demand.

There are many ways to meet the needs of a student who has disabilities. One way is to give the student extra time to complete work. Teachers might also permit the student to take tests differently from others in class. For example, the teacher might let the student speak the answers. Or another person could write the answers that the student gives. Also, students who have trouble concentrating might wish to take tests in a room that is extra quiet. Some students might want others to take notes for them during class. Or they might want to listen to recordings of books instead of reading them.

Technology is one way to help. There are computer programs, for example, designed for the needs of people with learning disabilities.

There are some schools in the United States that teach only students with learning disabilities. One is Landmark College in the northeastern state of Vermont. Students attend for up to three years. It prepares them to continue their education at other colleges. Classes at Landmark College are small. Students have their own learning plan, and a special teacher to help them study.

26.The Rehabilitation Act requires schools to _____B_________.

A. be more patient with disabled students

B. provide disabled students with opportunities equal to those for other students

C. establish a program for each child found to have a disability

D. permit disabled students to take tests differently from others in class

27.According to a more recent law, _________B_____, parents can take legal action.

A. if schools cannot provide good teachers

B. if schools fail to write and follow I.E.P.

C. if schools impose too much burden on students

D. if schools fail to satisfy parents’ needs

28.What is NOT mentioned in the article?______C_____

A. States must provide special education services without asking students for money.

B. Teachers with skills to help disabled students are needed badly.

C. Teachers might prevent the student from taking tests differently from others in class.

D. One way to meet disabled students’ need is to give the student s extra time to complete work.

29. If the disabled students have trouble concentrating and wish to take tests in a room that is extra quiet, a teacher should _______A_______.

A. say yes

B. say No

C. say sorry

D. encourage them to give up.

30.Which of the following is TRUE?_________B_____

Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. 0 On a rainy day, you will see many streams of muddy(多泥的)water running down the slopes(斜坡)of a hill. The water is muddy because it washes away soil from the hill slopes. Sometimes soil is blown away by strong winds. When the soil is carried away by water or wind, we say that the land is eroded(侵蚀). This is known as soil erosion. Plants cannot grow on eroded land. There is not enough soil on eroded land to give them the things they need. Plants need water and salts from the soil. We can do a number of things to stop soil erosion. This is called soil conservation(保护). One way of soil conservation on flat, open ground is to grow small plants such as grasses. Their roots hold the soil tightly together. Another way is to plant trees around an open field. Thus soil erosion by strong winds cannot take place. Rows of trees act as a very big wall. Soil erosion on slopes can be stopped by cutting "steps" called terraces(梯田). Water carrying soil cannot run straight down the slope now. It has to run down the terraces. This slows down the flow(流速)of the water. Most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces. There are some other ways for soil conservation. 1 On a rainy day the water running down the slopes of a hill is muddy because______ . (A)there are no terraces on the slopes (B)there are no small plants on the slopes (C)it washes away soil from the slopes
