A

My aunt died back in about 2003. She was eighty-four and so was my uncle. When she passed he felt miserable. They had been married for over 60 year s. After my aunt’s death, he attended his church more frequently and his mourning was nearly unbearable to witness. His only daughter lived clear across the country in the south so he had only himself to make a comfort.

My cousin talked him into selling the house that he and my aunt had built together about twenty-five years before. It was very hard to part with the home they built together. One day he called my cousin who was living in Texas and told her that he reconnected with a lady from a church that he and my aunt went to forty years previously. She played the piano

and his church was looking for new music. Her husband had died about seven years previously. He said he just wanted someone to go out to dinner with and spend time with. We were happy for them but had no idea how it would turn out. They were both almost eighty-seven years old.

They were like lovebirds and spent as much time together as they could. They both had one child each, she a son, he a daughter.

The conflict in their relationship came one day when they neither wanted to leave their respective churches. Before too long they realized that they did not want to be apart. They would find a new church together. They planned to marry. When he took her to a jewelry store and bought her a diamond, the employees were so impressed that they had a big write up in our own local paper, “The ‘Truth for Valentines’ Day. ” They prepared for their wedding. They moved the wedding date up because neither wanted to wait any longer to “be together”.

They got married in her house, where her first marriage took place. It was such a beautiful refreshing thing to see, two people who you would have thought had pretty much lived their lives, were beginning a new one together.

An article published recently in the scientific journal Nature is shedding new light on an important, but so far little has been appreciated, aspect of human evolution. In this article, Professors Dennis Bramble, and Daniel Lieberman suggest that the ability to run was a decisive factor in the development of our species. According to the two scientists, humans possess a number of anatomical(人体结构的)features that make them surprisingly good runners. “We are very conf ident that strong selection for running, which came at the expense of the historical ability to live in trees-was helpful in the origin of the modern human body form,” says Bramble, a biology professor at the University of Utah.

Traditional thinking up to now has been that the upright body form of modern humans has come about as a result of the ability to walk, and that running is simply a by-product of walking. Furthermore, humans have usually been regarded as poor runners compared to such animals as dogs, horses or antelopes. However, this is only true if we consider fast running over short distances. Even Olympic athlete can hardly run as fast as a horse can gallop, and can only keep up a top speed for fifteen seconds or so. Horses and antelopes, on the other hand, can run at top speed for several minutes, clearly outperforming us in this respect. But when it comes to long-distance running, humans do astonishingly well. They can maintain a steady pace for miles, and their overall speed compares favorably with that of horses or dogs.

Bramble and Lieberman examined twenty-six anatomical features found in humans. One of the most interesting of these is the nuchal ligament(颈背的韧带). When we run, it is this ligament that prevents our head from pitching back and forth or from side to side. Therefore, we are able to run with steady heads held high. The nuchal ligament is not found in any other surviving primates(灵长类动物), although the fossil(化石)record shows that Homo erectus, an early human species that walked upright, much as we do, also had one. Then there are our Achilles tendons(跟腱)at the backs of our legs, which have nothing to do with walking. When we run, these tendons behave like springs, helping to push us forward. Furthermore, we have low, wide shoulders, virtually disconnected from our skulls (the bony part of the head), another anatomical adaptation which allows us to run more efficiently.

But what evolutionary advantage is gained from being good long-distance runners? One

assumption is that this ability may have permitted early humans to obtain food more effectively. “What these features and fossil facts appear to be telling us is that running evolved in order for our direct ancestors to compete with other carnivores (animals that eat meat) for access to the p rotein needed to grow the big brains that we enjoy today.” says Lieberman.

1.We can learn from the passage that the human ability to run _______.

A. was only recently described in a scientific journal

B. played an important part in human evolution

C. was considered more natural than the ability to live in trees

D. contributed to the form of human language

2.According to the second paragraph, humans _______

A. are better runners than most other animals

B. are not good at running short distances

C. compare unfavorably with horses and dogs

D. are poor long-distance runners

3.It appears that the nuchal ligament _______.

A. enables us to run with steady heads

B. is found in modern primates only

C. prevents the head from being held high

D. is a unique feature of carnivores

4.The passage does NOT tell us that _______

A. early humans had an advantage in obtaining food thanks to the running ability

B. fossils help us better understand human evolution.

C. our Achilles tendons are an adaptation for running efficiently

D. big brains may have been evolved for running long-distance

It’s well-known that meditation(冥想) has many benefits, but do you know how to practice it for a beginner?

Set a proper scene

Find a space for meditation. It should be private and quiet.Make sure the temperature is comfortable.Sit on a cushion (垫子) if the floor is uncomfortable. You may play soft music if you like.

Feel your breath inflate (胀大) your lungs and push on your diaphragm (隔膜).Feel how sweet it is to inhale the fresh air.As you do this, your body will gradually begin to relax and all of your attention will be centered within your mind.

Return to real life

Once you feel fully centered in your mind, allow yourself to gradually drift back to real life.Move your fingers and toes and slowly wake your body up.Open your eyes and remain there for a few minutes until your senses come back, and then slowly stand up.Even if you can’t make it fully into your mind, you s till get some benefits from it.If you want to feel better, you just need to practice.Set about 10 minutes around the same time every day and repeat this exercise.

Mike Myers is a teacher at Chauncey Rose High School in Terre Haute, Indiana. Last year, he taught his students about the world’s rain forests. They learned that rain forests are important because the plants and animals of the rain forest give us food, wood, and medicine.

Destruction of the world’s rain forests is a serious problem.Unluckily, rain forests are disappearing at a rate of 80 acres per minute! As part of a class project, Mye rs’ students bought three acres of rain forest in Central America. They paid $25 per acre. The students hope that the land they bought will be protected and not destroyed. The students became so interested in rain forests that they decided to get a closer look at a real rain forest.

So last June, Myers and four of his students took a boat ride down a river. They saw alligators and crocodiles. In the middle of the week, a guide took Myers and his students into the rain forest. “The monkeys were not happy tha t we were in their forest. They broke small branches off the trees and threw them at us,” one of the students said, “It was a great learning experience for all of us,” said Myers.

Each student chose something specific about Costa Rica to study involving the plants, animals, food, and culture. During the last few days the group had time to do fun activities. They went whitewater rafting and horseback riding, and visited Costa Rica’s active volcano.

Myers hopes to make the trip every year with a different group of kids.

Award-winning novelist Jamaica Kincaid is talking with Time about her new book See Now Then.

Your new book, See Now Then, features a Caribbean writer whose husband is a composer and who lives in the Northe ast with two kids. Sounds like you. How autobiographical(自传的)is it?

36 But I wasn't thinking of myself. My own self, my own everyday life, is sort of very untidy and smelly and kind of annoying under close observation.

What do you mean, untidy and smelly?

I like to be in my pajamas(睡衣)all day. Sometimes I don't wash for days because I like to read and sit around. 37 I'm not fun to be with.

There's less in this book about slavery and race than in some of your previous work.

38

Race is not particularly interesting to me. Power is. Slavery interests me because it's against humanity and has not stopped. It's necessary to talk about that.

So it's not interesting to you that the most powerful man in America is black ?

Not really. As I say, race is not important to me. The first time I saw Barack Obama, he gave a wonderful speech. But what made me really like him is that his wife came out and she was darker than he is. 39

You went to the U.S. to be a maid. What do you think today when you see maids from the West Indies?

That they probably are not as lucky as I was. I've been extremely lucky my entire life. And I've never said no to any kindness. 40

A. I like to eat in bed.

B. I've always taken it and said thank you.

C. Are you still interested in those topics?

D. A lot of events in the book would seem to parallel my own life.

E. Has your husband read this seemingly autobiographical novel?

F. When you find someone you hate a lot, you should really look at it.

G. It's so rare to see a black man married to a woman who is darker than he is.

新高考英语时文阅读高三专版(含答案解析及全文翻译) A The life of FM-2030, a transhumanist (超人文主义者) who believed humans will be able to end natural death in the future using technology, is explored in a new documentary. The film, titled‘2030’, was released late last month and is available across multiple streaming platforms. It was made by British filmmaker Johnny Boston who interviewed a range of FM-2030’s acquaintances and scientific experts. Transhumanists believe humans can and should use emerging future technology to greatly enhance their natural abilities. These technologies could include robotics, AI, gene therapy preventing the ageing process. This could radically change what it means to be a member of our species. FM-2030 was born in Brussels in 1930 named Fereidoun M. Esfandiary. The son of an Iranian diplomat, he later changed his legal name to mark his belief that by 2030 we will be ageless and everyone will have an excellent chance to live forever. FM-2030 wrote a number of books around life extension and transhumanist topics, and is widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of the modern transhumanist movement. After his death in 2000, FM-2030’s body was placed in cryonic suspension in Arizona. Mr Boston commented: “I met FM-2030 and that was his legal name when I was about 11 or 12 years old. He’d come to London with his partner at the time and they stayed with us. This was in the early 80s when he had these really off the wall ideas that we were going to live on indefinitely and that there was going to be a much more progressive politics. He talked about we were going to communicate brain to brain. There was going to be a machine that you could put in various characteristics and it was going to print stuff.” Mr Boston went on to produce a number of videos outlining FM-2030’s ideas. He did a series of films called the future of democracy that came out of talks that FM had done. He said,“FM really talks about what the future holds in terms of how we govern ourselves. He thinks we’ve got to useAI.” 1. What will happen in the future according to transhumanists? A. Humans will die in a natural state. B. Humans’life span will remain limited. C. Humans will not need language any longer. D. Humans’abilities will be largely improved by technologies. 2. Why did Fereidoun M. Esfandiary change his name to FM-2030? A. Because his father forced him to do so. B. Because he didn’t like his former name at all. C. Because he wanted to flag his transhumanist faith.

Learning is anytime, anywhere with anyone。

A little bit every day makes perfect(点滴铸就完美)。

阅读理解(满分39分) A Food festivals around the world Stilton Cheese Rolling May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane(赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese. Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy(辛辣),but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you! La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts La Tomatina—the world's largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd. The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash! 1. In the Stilton cheese rolling competition, competitors on each team must________. A. wear various formal clothes B. roll a wooden cheese in their own lane C. kick or throw their cheese D. use a real cheese weighing about four kilos 2. Where is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival held? A. In New Mexico. B. In the Caribbean. C. In Australia. D. In China.

The multi-functional lobby makes a great entrance, though it's the restored ceiling, old not new, that really grabs the attention. The picture- lined restaurant is an equally successful space. The rooms are a bit like being inside a luxurious cigar box, with their wood-panelled walls and artful fur sofa covers that add a feeling of warmth. The Langham, London Marylebone, London, England An advert from the late 19th century declares that the Langham is situated in the "most healthy, convenient and fashionable position in London.
