V. Reading Comprehension:

Education in the United States is compulsory for children up to about the age of sixteen. Most young people stay in school longer than that . Most graduates continue their education at a college or university. Education for most young people in this country is free up to the time they graduate from high school. There are private schools, but most parents send their children to public schools, where students do not pay tuition. When young people go to college, however, they must pay tuition at a public university or a private university. University costs are going up a lot. Private universities have become very expensive because the government does not help the private schools.

Who pays? The parents of children in college may have to pay more, or often the students may have to find jobs. These students have to worry about assignments and grades and also about their jobs. If they work too much at their jobs, they may be absent from class or miss assignments or make too many errors on tests. They may even fail their courses and have to leave the university. For many students, the problem of getting an education is not a problem of homework and exams. They also have to make money to pay for tuition. And professors don't teach them how to do that!

It was not a good year. At harvest the crops did not bring as much as we had hoped. Yet even though times were hard, I couldn‘t wait any longer to ask, ―Daddy, may I have a violin of my own?‖Daddy‘s face looked sad. That night, and many following nights, I heard him pray, ―Lord, my daughter wants her own violin.‖

One evening we all sat around the table. I was doing my homework. Mother sewed, and Daddy wrote a letter to his friend, George Finkle, who was a fine violinist. As he wrote, Daddy read parts of his letter out loud to Mother. Weeks later I discovered he‘d written one line he didn‘t read aloud: ―Would you watch for a violin for my daughter? I can‘t pay much, but she enjoys music, and we‘d like her to have her own instrument.‖

At last the day arrived. I listened while Daddy made a phone call. He hung up and asked, ―Mary, do you want to go with me to visit Mr. Finkle?‖

―Sure,‖ I answered.

When we came to the fine, old house, a tall man, older than Daddy, opened the door. ―Come in! Mary, I‘ve been hearing things about you. Your daddy has arranged a big surprise for you!‖In the hall, he picked up a case, opened it, took out a violin, and he turned to Daddy. ―I found it in a pawnshop for seven dollars. It‘s a good violin. Mary should be able to make beautiful music with it.‖ Then he handed the violin to me. I noticed the tears in Daddy‘s eyes as I finally comprehended. It was mine! ―How beautiful!‖ I said barely breathing.

The day I carried my violin to school for my first lesson I was frantic. After class I practiced daily, feeling the warm wood fit under my chin like a part of my body.

Two years later, I graduated. I packed my cherished violin in its case and stepped into the grown-up world. More years passed. My violin made every move with us, and I carefully stored it away—briefly remembering how much I still loved it and promising myself to play it soon.

Leisure plays an important part in British life. There are four main reasons for this.

First of all, people spend less time working now than they used to, mostly due to the introduction of new technology in industry. The normal British working week is Monday to Friday, 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, although some people regularly work a few hours‘ overtime each week. Secondly, all working people get a minimum of two weeks‘paid holiday a year. In addition, there are six or more bank holidays a year when all banks and businesses are closed. In some cases the dates of these national holidays change from year to year and in different parts of Britain.

Another reason is that, thanks to modern medicine and higher living standards, people live longer now. This means that after retirement, people have quite a few years of leisure left. Nowadays a much higher proportion of the population is over sixty, but in this group there are more women than men.

Finally, fewer babies are born each year and the average family in Britain

has two children. This is one result of changing social attitudes. For example, many more married women now go out to work. The money they earn influences their leisure time. Even married women who do not go out to work have more time for interesting hobbies because most British homes have washing machines, vacuum cleaners and other labor-saving gadgets.

Nobody likes staying at home on a holiday if the weather is fine. Last August we decided to spend the day in the country. The only difficulty was that millions of other people had just the same idea. We moved out of the city slowly behind a long line of cars, but at last we came to a quiet country road and, after some time, stopped at a farm far from the town. We had brought plenty of food with us and we got it out of the car. Now everything was ready so we sat down near a path at the foot of a hill. It was quiet in the cool grass—until we heard bells ringing at the top of the hill. What we saw made us pick up our things and run back to our car as quickly as we could. There were about two hundred sheep coming towards us down the path!

Almost every family buys at least one copy of a newspaper every day. Some people subscribe to as many as two or three different newspapers. But why do people read newspaper?

Five years ago, news of important happenings?battles lost and won, kings or rules overthrown or killed?took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in faraway countries on the same day they happen.

Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories, and, of course, advertisements. There are all sorts of advertisements. The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space, but it is worth the money for news of their products goes into almost every home in the country. For those who produce newspapers, advertisements are also very important. Money earned from advertisement makes it possible for them to sell their newspapers at a low price and still make a profit.
