A poor boy had to sell things door by door to pay for his schooling. One day he found that he only had one dime(一角钱)left, and he was hungry so he decided to beg(乞)for a meal at the next house.

However, he felt nervous when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. He looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe(欠) you?"

"You don't owe me anything," she answered, "Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness." He said, "Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart." As the boy left that house, he not only felt strongly moved(感动) , but also believed in people greatly. He was about to give up before this point.

Years later the woman was badly ill. The local doctors tried their best, but couldn't cure her. They finally sent her to a hospital in the big city. Dr Howard Kelly, now famous, was called in. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately(立刻) , dressed in his doctor's clothes, he went through the hospital hall into her room. He recognized(认出)her at once. He went back to his office and decided to do his best to save her life. From that day on, he gave special attention(关注) to her.

After some time, the woman was well enough. Dr Kelly asked the nurse to bring him the final bill(药费单).He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to the room.
