第二部分阅读理解

第一节阅读理解(共20 小题;每小题2 分,满分40 分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和D)中,选择最佳答案,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Don’t Ban Exams

While a new school term is about to begin, perhaps we should reconsider the matter of examinations. In July, two writers praised the cancellation of exams because they believe “test don't tell the whole story”.

As a teacher who has worked in four countries, I have had the experience that a student who earns good marks is generally a good student, and that a student's final mark in a subject is usually an average of the year's work.Of course there are exceptions, but they do not have the frequency that would give an unfair pictur e of a student’s ability.

The simple fact is that proper class work, diligent exam studies and good marks are almost certain indicators of a student's future performance. The opposite, almost certainly, incompetence.

There is no acceptable substitute for competition and examination of quality. How can teachers and future officials determine what a student has learned and remembered? Should we simply take the student's word for it? Any institution that “liberates” students from fair and formal exams is misguided if not ignorant. And surely the graduates of such institutions will lack trustworthiness, not to mention being rejected by foreign universities for post graduates or other studies. When all is said and done, I sense that a fear of failure and a fear of unpleasant comparison with others is at the bottom of most ban exam talk.Excellence and quality fear nothing. On the contrary, they seek competition.

31.What does the underlined word “cancellation” in the first paragraph mean ?

A.A decision to support something.

B.A plan to do something.

C.A decision to stop something from happening.

D.A decision that has already been arranged.

32.Which is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A.The writer has worked in four countries.

B.All the students are afraid of exams.

C.Diligent exam studies and good marks are almost certain indicators of a student’s future performance.

D.Any institution that “liberates” students from fair and formal exams is misguided if not ignorant.

33.Which is NOT right according to the passage?

A.Some people believe that test can't tell the whole story.

B.Nothing can take the place of exams.

C.All the students will get good marks in the exams.

D.Excellence and quality fear nothing.

34.The writer writes this passage to ______.

A.tell people that exams can't be cancelled B.blame the two writers

C.persuade the two writers D.tell a story

Susie May Isaacs, my great-grandmother, was a beautiful woman, both in person and in spirit. She was born in a boat in Western Oklahoma.During the eleven years I knew her I received the gifts of witnessing determination, courage, love and perseverance.Ma lost her leg when she was 83 due to poor circulation and was told she would be in a wheelchair the rest of her life. The doctors were astonished when she left the hospital using a cane and had named her new wooden leg “Peggy”.

In 1982 Ma had a heart attack and was diagnosed with heart failure.During the weeks she was in ICU(加护病房), the hospital did not allow children to visit.Ma became very upset and refused to eat until she was allowed to see her sixteen great-grandchildren.

Butterfly’s Wings

One day a small opening appeared on a cocoon(茧子)a man sat and watched for the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further. So the man decided to help the butterfly, he took a pair of scissors and cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon.

The butterfly then emerged easily.

But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled (皱缩的)wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings .It was never able to fly. What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Go d’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved

its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life.If God allowed us to go through our life without any obstacles, it would cripple (使跛)us.We would not be as strong as what we could have been.

I asked for strength,

And God gave me difficulties to make me strong.

I asked for wisdom,

And God gave me problems to solve.

I asked for courage,

And God gave me danger to overcome.

I asked for love,

And God gave me troubled people to help.
